The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Objectives:
The lack of radiation knowledge among the general public continues to be a challenge for building communities prepared for radiological emergencies. This study applied a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to the results of an expert survey to identify priority risk reduction messages and challenges to increasing community radiological emergency preparedness.
Methods:Professionals with expertise in radiological emergency preparedness, state/local health and emergency management officials, and journalists/journalism academics were surveyed following a purposive sampling methodology. An MCDA was used to weight criteria of importance in a radiological emergency, and the weighted criteria were applied to topics such as sheltering-in-place, decontamination, and use of potassium iodide. Results were reviewed by respondent group and in aggregate.
Results:Sheltering-in-place and evacuation plans were identified as the most important risk reduction measures to communicate to the public. Possible communication challenges during a radiological emergency included access to accurate information; low levels of public trust; public knowledge about radiation; and communications infrastructure failures.
Conclusions:Future assessments for community readiness for a radiological emergency should include questions about sheltering-in-place and evacuation plans to inform risk communication.

Chloris spp. are warm-season grasses that outcompete crops for scarce resources throughout Australia. In Queensland, mild winters and increased adoption of conservation tillage practices have led to an increase of this warm-season grass family in winter crops. The objective of this study is to understand whether droplet size (nozzle type) effects herbicide efficacy of summer perennial grasses, as previous research found no effect of droplet size (nozzle type) on herbicide efficacy of winter annual grasses. A study to compare droplet-size (nozzle type) effects on control of windmillgrass and its domesticated relative, rhodesgrass, was conducted at the University of Queensland in Gatton, QLD, Australia. Results showed little difference in dry weight reductions for windmillgrass or rhodesgrass across droplet size (nozzle type). Paraquat applications with the TTI nozzle resulted in significantly lower dry weight reductions compared with other droplet-size sprays (nozzle types) for rhodesgrass. Glyphosate, imazamox plus imazapyr, and clodinafop resulted in commercially acceptable control for both species, regardless of the droplet size (nozzle type) selected, indicating droplet size (nozzle type) has relatively little impact on the efficacy of these herbicides. Proper nozzle selection can result in control of Chloris spp., a hard to control weed species, while reducing the occurrence of spray drift to nearby sensitive areas.

The existence of a stream of tidally stripped stars from the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy demonstrates that the Milky Way is still in the process of accreting mass. More recently, an extensive stream of stars has been uncovered in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), revealing that it too is cannibalising a small companion. This paper reports the recent observations of this stream, determining its spatial and kinematic properties, and tracing its three-dimensional structure, as well as describing future observations and what we may learn about the Andromeda galaxy from this giant tidal stream.

Objective:
We present the first reported case in the English language literature of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the right tonsil in a young, pregnant woman, and we report a management strategy for this enigmatic entity.
Case report:A 28-year-old, pregnant woman presented with a 10-day history of odynophagia despite a course of antibiotics. Examination revealed a grade II, erythematous right tonsil with ulceration on the upper pole. A biopsy was arranged, and initial evaluation was suggestive of spindle cell carcinoma. However, this diagnosis was reviewed after immunohistochemical staining confirmed an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour. Subsequent complete excision was undertaken using CO2 laser.
Conclusion:Clinically, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the tonsil is known to be locally aggressive and can present in a manner not dissimilar to a high grade carcinoma of the tonsil. As a result, the recommended treatment is complete local excision with careful follow up.

1. Two herds of cows were divided into two groups for winter feeding. One group was given the usual ration of hay, roots and “concentrates”, the other was fed on a similar diet in which part of the hay and concentrates was replaced by artificially dried grass.
2. The carotene content of the butterfat in the control group fell steadily from 0·8 mg. per 100 g. of fat to about 0·2 mg. between October and March. That of the group to which dried grass was given did not fall below 0·5 mg. per 100 g. of fat.
3. The milks from the two groups were employed in a nutritional investigation on the boys of two institutions. During a “fore-period” from July until the end of September, the boys received the ordinary milk of the herd as part of their diet. They were then divided into two groups which, during the experimental period from October until March received the “winter” or the dried grass “summer” milk respectively. Then followed an “after-period” during which all the boys received the mixed milk of the herds, then out at pasture. The composition of the basal diet of the boys at these institutions was known. Boys attending an elementary school in the vicinity of one institution were also investigated in a similar experiment but no details of their home diet were obtained.
4. Excluding children whose records were incomplete there were 159 in the group on “winter” milk, and 163 in that receiving “summer” milk.
5. Periodically records of height, weight, and chest measurement were made. All the boys were under medical supervision.
6. Statistical examination of the results fails to show that the artificially produced “summer” milk exerted a beneficial effect detectable by the improvement in growth or general condition of health.
7. The most probable explanation is that the basal diets of the two institutions were already adequate in respect to carotene and vitamin A.
8. The variations exhibited by the records of the groups provide another example of the very great difficulty of eliminating or adequately controlling sources of error in a big-scale nutrition experiment of this type.

The glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI) protein-membrane anchors are ubiquitous among the eukaryotes. However, while mammalian cells typically express in the order of 100 thousand copies of GPI-anchor per cell, the parasitic protozoa, particularly the kinetoplastids, express up to 10–20 million copies of GPI-anchor and/or GPI-related glycolipids per cell. Thus GPI-family members dominate the cell surface molecular architecture of these organisms. In several cases, GPI-anchored proteins, such as the variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) of the African trypanosomes, or GPI-related glycolipids, such as the lipophosphoglycan (LPG) of the Leishmania, are known to be essential for parasite survival and infectivity. The highly elevated levels and specialised nature of GPI metabolism in the kinetoplastid parasites suggest that the GPI biosynthetic pathways might be good targets for the development of chemotherapeutic agents. This article introduces the range of GPI structures found in protozoan parasites, and their mammalian hosts, and discusses some aspects of GPI biosynthesis.

The treatment of cereal straws with dilute NaOH solutions has been developed in this country as a means of increasing the supply of digestible carbohydraten food for cattle. Watson (1941) has dealt with the principles of the treatment and has given a brief outline of the process, and it is not proposed to discuss the process or developmental work here. It is sufficient to say that the recommended standard process consists of soaking chopped cereal straw in 10 times its weight of 1·2–1·5 % NaOH solution for periods up to 22 hr., removing the soaked material from the liquor and washing free of NaOH.

Comparative digestibility trials have been carried out on hays top-dressed with nitrogenous fertilizers 8–13 days before cutting and on similar hays which were not top-dressed.
The top-dressing resulted in an increase of 2·0% crude protein and 1·2% true protein.
The digestibility of the protein was significantly higher in the top-dressed hays and no other constituents were affected.
The protein equivalents in hay dry matter were increased from 4·4 to 6·0% by the top-dressing.

An account is given of experimental work carried out at Jealott's Hill on bloat.
Bloat was produced in dairy cows and sheep by dosing with lucerne juice. Sheep proved convenient test animals and were used in most of the tests described.
Parenteral and intravenous administration of the flavone quercetin, which inhibits the activity of smooth muscle, did not cause bloat even in the presence of cyanide. It is unlikely that flavones are concerned in bloat.
Fractionation of bloat-provoking lucerne juice showed that activity was retained after (a) precipitation of chloroplastic material, and (b) passage of clear juice through an anion or cation exchange resin. This suggests that the bloat-provoking factor is non-ionic and not adsorbed on resins—properties shown by saponinis.
Dosing sheep with lucerne saponins, four other saponins, egg albumin and a synthetic foaming compound failed to produce bloat.
Two household detergents and a number of surface-active agents did not relieve bloat, but foam-breaking compounds were very effective.
A synthetic inorganic saliva and cow's saliva did not prevent bloat in sheep and from the single test made with cow's saliva it is not possible to say if it increased the severity of bloat.
It is concluded that the formation of a stable foam is a major factor in lucerne bloat and that food constituents, other than saponins, and the physical condition of the rumen ingesta probably influence the stability of the foam.

Seventeen samples of pasture collected from May to December, 1929, have been analysed for mineral constituents.
1. The results show that drought conditions seriously affect the mineral composition of pastures.
2. The calcium content showed a slight fall during the months of drought, and a more marked fall in the months of heavy rain from October to December.
3. The phosphorus content fell during the drought period and rose rapidly at the end of the year.

The pollination requirements of the white lupin cultivar Vladimir were investigated in a glasshouse. Five treatments were compared in which the flowers of each plant were (i) left to autopollinate, (ii) shaken, (iii) tripped, (iv) self pollinated or (v) cross pollinated. Pollination treatments had no effect on the numbers of flowers, pods or seeds or weight of seed produced by the plants but did slightly shorten the duration of flowering, the effect being greatest when flowers were tripped or cross pollinated and least when they were shaken or self pollinated.
The proportion of flowers that developed into pods differed with raceme, with secondaries producing more than tertiaries > primaries > quaternaries; the number of seeds per pod differed in the same order, but mean single-seed weight decreased on successive racemes. However, pollination treatments had no effect on the distribution of flowers, pods or seeds on the plant.
This crop species is clearly highly self fertile and self pollinating and likely to yield well without insect pollination.

Kale silage was made in five large silos and the losses of dry matter and kale constituents determined.
The losses of dry matter averaged 33%, of N-free extract 41% and of crude protein 34%.
The percentage losses are higher than with wellmade grass silage, but, nevertheless, the yields of silage (and animal nutrients) per acre compare very favourably with those of other crops, including grass.
Inclusion of straw in kale silage did not reduce losses of dry matter; it merely reduced slightly the quantity of water lost.

A series of experiments designed to measure the losses in dry matter and nutrients in different types of silage are described. These extend over a period of 4 years. The ordinary or low-temperature process (maximum temperature 80–100° F.) is described either with or without added molasses or whey solutions, and is compared with processes in which solutions of mineral acids are added. The A.I.V. process of Virtanen, in which the acidity of the mass is reduced rapidly to pH. 3·0–4·0 by the addition of a mineral acid solution, is considered in detail.
