Subfossil lemur discoveries from the Beanka Protected Area in western Madagascar

A new fossil site in a previously unexplored part of western Madagascar (the Beanka Protected Area) has yielded remains of many recently extinct vertebrates, including giant lemurs (Babakotia radofilai, Palaeopropithecus kelyus, Pachylemur sp., and Archaeolemur edwardsi), carnivores (Cryptoprocta spelea), the aardvark-like Plesiorycteropus sp., and giant ground cuckoos (Coua). Many of these represent considerable range extensions. Extant species that were extirpated from the region (e.g., Prolemur simus) are also present. Calibrated radiocarbon ages for 10 bones from extinct primates span the last three millennia. The largely undisturbed taphonomy of bone deposits supports the interpretation that many specimens fell in from a rock ledge above the entrance. Some primates and other mammals may have been prey items of avian predators, but human predation is also evident. Strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) suggest that fossils were local to the area. Pottery sherds and bones of extinct and extant vertebrates with cut and chop marks indicate human activity in previous centuries. Scarcity of charcoal and human artifacts suggests only occasional visitation to the site by humans. The fossil assemblage from this site is unusual in that, while it contains many sloth lemurs, it lacks ratites, hippopotami, and crocodiles typical of nearly all other Holocene subfossil sites on Madagascar.

Summary
Periodic axisymmetric vortex breakdown in a cylinder with a rotating end wall
When the fluid inside a completely filled cylinder is set in motion by the rotation of the bottom end wall, steady and unsteady axisymmetric vortex breakdown is possible. The onset of unsteadiness is via a Hopf bifurcation.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the flow inside the cylinder where marker particles have been released from an elliptic ring concentric with the axis of symmetry near the top end wall. This periodic flow corresponds to a Reynolds number Re=2765 and cylinder aspect ratio H/R=2.5. Neighboring particles have been grouped to define a sheet of marker fluid and the local transparency of the sheet has been made proportional to its local stretching. The resultant dye sheet takes on an asymmetric shape, even though the flow is axisymmetric, due to the unsteadiness and the asymmetric release of marker particles.When the release is symmetric, as in Fig. 2, the dye sheet is also symmetric. These two figures are snapshots of the dye sheet after three periods of the oscillation (a period is approximately 36.3 rotations of the end wall). Figure 3 is a cross section of the dye sheet in Fig. 2 after 26 periods of the oscillation. Here only the marker particles are shown. They are colored according to their time of release, the oldest being blue, through green and yellow, and the most recently released being red. Comparison with Escudier's experiment shows very close agreement.
The particle equations of motion correspond to a Hamiltonian dynamical system and an appropriate.

Patients with schizophrenia have Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) deficits, which are commonly interpreted as reflecting frontal cortex-based executive dysfunction. One means of assessing the refractoriness of frontal-executive impairment is to utilize a training or modification strategy to improve WCST performance. In this study, 73 patients with schizophrenia were assigned to 1 of 2 groups. Group 1 received the standard WCST instructions for 64 cards (Condition 1). For the second 64-card deck, the patients were asked to verbalize the reason that they placed the card where they did after each sort (Condition 2). Group 2 received this modified instruction 1st (Condition 1) and then the standard instructions for the second deck (Condition 2). A group of normal comparison participants was also tested using standard instructions alone. Group 2 committed significantly fewer perseverative responses than did Group 1. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between Group 2 (Condition 1) and the normal participants. Group 1's performance improved when patients were exposed to the modified instructions (Condition 2). Additionally, poor premorbid factors and disorganized symptoms were associated with decreased benefit from the modified instructions across both groups. Cumulatively, these data suggest that a simple instruction may enhance executive function and impact WCST performance in patients with schizophrenia. (JINS, 2001, 7, 344–352.)
Raman Analysis Of AlxGa1-xN Films

Raman analysis of the E2 mode of AlxGal-xN in the composition range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 is presented. The lineshape was observed to exhibit a significant asymmetry and broadening toward the high energy range. The spatial correlation model is discussed, and is shown to account for the lineshape. The model calculations also indicate the lack of a long-range order in the CVD (chemical vapor deposition) alloys. These results were confirmed by X-ray scattering: the relative intensity of the superlattice line was found to be negligible. The line broadening of the E2 mode was found to exhibit a maximum at a composition x∼0.5 indicative of a random disordered alloy system. The stress state of the alloys was found to be tensile and was attributed to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients of the SiC substrate and the film.
Undoped and doped GaN thin films deposited on high-temperature monocrystalline AlN buffer layers on vicinal and on-axis α(6H)–SiC(0001) substrates via organometallic vapor phase epitaxy

Monocrystalline GaN(0001) thin films have been grown at 950 °C on high-temperature, ≈ 100 nm thick, monocrystalline AlN(0001) buffer layers predeposited at 1100 °C on α(6H)−SiC(0001)Si substrates via OMVPE in a cold-wall, vertical, pancake-style reactor. These films were free of low-angle grain boundaries and the associated oriented domain microstructure. The PL spectra of the GaN films deposited on both vicinal and on-axis substrates revealed strong bound excitonic emission with a FWHM value of 4 meV. The near band-edge emission from films on the vicinal substrates was shifted slightly to a lower energy, indicative of films containing residual tensile stresses. A peak attributed to free excitonic emission was also clearly observed in the on-axis spectrum. Undoped films were too resistive for accurate Hall-effect measurements. Controlled n-type, Si-doping in GaN was achieved for net carrier concentrations ranging from approximately 1 × 1017 cm−3 to 1 × 1020 cm−3. Mg-doped, p-type GaN was achieved with nA−nD ≈ 3 × 1017 cm−3, ρ ≈ 7 Ω · cm, and μ ≈ 3 cm2/V · s. Double-crystal x-ray rocking curve measurements for simultaneously deposited 1.4 μm GaN films revealed FWHM values of 58 and 151 arcsec for deposition on on-axis and off-axis 6H−SiC(0001)Si substrates, respectively. The corresponding FWHM values for the AlN buffer layers were approximately 200 and 400 arcsec, respectively.
