The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Field studies were conducted at 35 sites throughout the north-central United States in 1998 and 1999 to determine the effect of postemergence glyphosate application timing on weed control and grain yield in glyphosate-resistant corn. Glyphosate was applied at various timings based on the height of the most dominant weed species. Weed control and corn grain yields were considerably more variable when glyphosate was applied only once. The most effective and consistent season-long annual grass and broadleaf weed control occurred when a single glyphosate application was delayed until weeds were 15 cm or taller. Two glyphosate applications provided more consistent weed control when weeds were 10 cm tall or less and higher corn grain yields when weeds were 5 cm tall or less, compared with a single application. Weed control averaged at least 94 and 97% across all sites in 1998 and 1999, respectively, with two glyphosate applications but was occasionally less than 70% because of late emergence of annual grass and Amaranthus spp. or reduced control of Ipomoea spp. With a single application of glyphosate, corn grain yield was most often reduced when the application was delayed until weeds were 23 cm or taller. Averaged across all sites in 1998 and 1999, corn grain yields from a single glyphosate application at the 5-, 10-, 15-, 23-, and 30-cm timings were 93, 94, 93, 91, and 79% of the weed-free control, respectively. There was a significant effect of herbicide treatment on corn grain yield in 23 of the 35 sites when weed reinfestation was prevented with a second glyphosate application. When weed reinfestation was prevented, corn grain yield at the 5-, 10-, and 15-cm application timings was 101, 97, and 93% of the weed-free control, respectively, averaged across all sites. Results of this study suggested that the optimum timing for initial glyphosate application to avoid corn grain yield loss was when weeds were less than 10 cm in height, no more than 23 d after corn planting, and when corn growth was not more advanced than the V4 stage.

The successful diagnosis, surgical planning, and long-term care of children with transposition of the great arteries require high-quality cardiac imaging with echocardiography. Echocardiography must identify the relevant anatomic variants of transposition of the great arteries, such as of ventricular septal defects and aortic arch anomalies. Methodical and detailed imaging of the coronary arteries is particularly important, as translocation of the coronary arteries is a critical component of the arterial switch procedure. Familiarity with the potential coronary artery variants and the ideal imaging planes is essential for an echocardiographer. Knowledge of both the early and late complications following the arterial switch procedure is essential to optimise post-operative echocardiography. These complications can include residual lesions leading to haemodynamic compromise or progressive late phenomena, such as aortic root dilatation and aortic insufficiency. Echocardiography will continue to be the cornerstone to the lifelong management of transposition of the great arteries, and improvements in technology and increased familiarity with modalities such as stress echocardiography will enhance the role of advanced imaging even further.

There is a collection of rare congenital cardiac defects that can produce significant haemodynamic embarrassment. Owing to their rarity, these lesions may be overlooked or mistaken for other more common congenital cardiac defects. Using careful segmental echocardiographic techniques, such as multiple planes of imaging and inferential Doppler findings, it is possible to identify these lesions and thus plan surgical management. Some of the lesions of importance reviewed include the aortopulmonary window, the aorto-ventricular tunnels, the aorto-atrial tunnels, and aneurysm of the sinuses of Valsalva. Some conditions such as the aortopulmonary window and aneurysm of the sinuses of Valsalva often occur in the setting of other congenital cardiac lesions. At times, the presence of coexisting lesions may mask some of the characteristic features of these defects. With prompt identification, all of these rare conditions are amenable to complete surgical repair. Newer modalities such as three-dimensional echocardiography can further enhance surgical planning.

It has long been known that the most complex combinations of cardiac malformations are those found in the setting of the so-called “splenic syndromes”.1 Many aspects of these syndromes have been controversial over recent years, not least the presence or absence of features of isomerism within the heart.2,3 Recent experience with genetic manipulation of mice, nonetheless, has now shown that it is possible to generate unequivocal evidence of cardiac isomerism, particularly in those animals which show features of right isomerism when the genes responsible for morphologically leftness are knocked out.4 Furthermore, when the crucial philosophical principle known as the “morphological method”5 is applied to the hearts of patients known to have visceral heterotaxy, it is equally clear that patients falling within these groups, when judged on the extent of the pectinate muscles relative to the atrioventricular junctions, exhibit isomerism of either the morphologically right or left atrial appendages.3

The relationship between MRI findings (i.e., subcortical hyperintensities; SH, whole brain volume) and the cognitive dysfunction of vascular dementia (VaD) was examined. Participants included 24 persons that met NINDS-AIREN criteria for VaD (MMSE = 19.9 ± 4.2) and underwent comprehensive neuropsychological assessment and MRI brain imaging. The volume of subcortical hyperintensities (SH) was strongly associated with executive–psychomotor performance, but not with performance across other cognitive domains or global cognitive functional level. Conversely, WBV was strongly associated with global cognitive functioning and performance across most cognitive domains (memory, language, visual integration), but not with executive–psychomotor functioning. The failure of SH to account for either the global dementia evident in these VaD patients or impairments across most cognitive domains suggests that deep subcortical white matter disease may only indirectly contribute to the global cognitive dysfunction of VaD. That WBV emerged as a stronger correlate of dementia raises further questions regarding the cerebral mechanisms that contribute to the development of VaD. (JINS, 2002, 8, 743–752.)

Summary
Introduction
Advances in landscape ecology, ecosystem management, geographic information systems, and remote sensing have led us from the stand, to the landscape, and to broader scales in natural resources planning and management. As science and management have expanded to these scales, they frequently encompass multi-ownership landscapes. The management and scientific challenges posed by multi-ownership landscapes are especially complex. Species and ecosystems do not recognize legal boundaries between ownerships (Forman, 1995; Landres et al., 1998), and the landscape dynamics of individual ownerships is controlled by a complex of economic, social, political, and biophysical forces. The aggregate ecological conditions of landscapes are controlled by the spatial pattern and dynamics of individual owners and ecological interactions among those ownerships. Solutions to problems of conservation policy and practices for multi-ownership landscapes do not lie in isolated owner-by-owner planning and management. Broader scale approaches are needed. Work in multi-ownership landscapes also reveals the need for increased integration among ecological and social sciences. In most contemporary landscapes, the dominant disturbance regimes are directly or indirectly controlled by human activities. In this chapter we will present a case study to demonstrate the importance of taking a multi-ownership view of landscapes and describe an approach we are developing to assess the effects of different forest management policies on ecological components of a province (i.e., subregion) in coastal Oregon.
Overview of multi-ownership landscape assessments and management
Interest in conservation planning, policy, and management in multi-ownership landscapes is increasing rapidly (Kreutzwiser and Wright, 1990; Davis and Liu, 1991; Keiter and Boyce, 1991; O'Connell and Noss, 1992; Schonewald-Cox et al., 1992; Turner et al., 1996; Wear et al., 1996; Maltamo et al., 1997; Landres et al., 1998).

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Acute liver failure (ALF) results in failure of the body to sustain vital metabolic functions such as energy production, protein synthesis, and detoxification–excretion of metabolic by products. In addition, experimental evidence suggests that plasma from patients with ALF is cytotoxic (Seda et al. 1984a), possibly as the result of cytokine and free radical release from the necrotic liver (Nagaki et al. 1991). This combination of decreased metabolic reserve and increased levels of cytotoxic compounds determines the severity of the clinical syndrome which follows.
Development of liver support has been ongoing for at least 30 years, and has included techniques such as hemodialysis, blood and plasma exchange, xenogeneic and allogeneic liver perfusion, and blood “purification” with charcoal and ion exchange resins (Sussman and Kelly, 1995a and Chapters 18 to 21). Despite a number of promising preliminary reports with various techniques, the results of clinical studies in man have been disappointing, that is, no mode of treatment appears to improve survival after ALF. Although non-biological systems such as charcoal hemo-perfusion are capable of reducing levels of ammonia (Schechter et al. 1984), “middle molecules” (Opolon 1979) and other putative deleterious compounds (Seda 1984b; Nagaki et al. 1991), these systems do not provide the requisite metabolic support to sustain a patient with ALF until regeneration of the native liver can occur.
Extracorporeal perfusion of a whole liver theoretically provides a complete form of organ replacement.

Several previous studies have reported that cognitive/behavioural treatments have been relatively ineffective for chronic, drug-resistant depressed patients. In the present report, six chronic, drug-resistant depressed patients were treated with an integrated program consisting of cognitive/behavioural treatment, pharmacotherapy, and short term hospitalization. The obtained improvement rates were substantially better than previous studies. Potential explanations for these findings are discussed.
