Betelgeusia brezinai new species (Radiasteridae, Paxillosida, Asteroidea) is described from diversely fossiliferous Upper Cretaceous methane seep deposits of South Dakota. Asteroids are rare at modern chemosynthetic settings, although a hydrothermal vent occurrence is known, and two possible fossil methane seep occurrences have been reported. The Radiasteridae is important to the interpretation of crown-group asteroid phylogeny. Two extant genera are assigned to the family: Radiaster is known from relatively few but geographically widely dispersed largely deeper-water settings, and Gephyreaster is uncommon over a range of depths in the North Pacific Ocean. Jurassic and Cretaceous radiasterids have been described from geographically widely separated localities. In morphological-based phylogenetic analyses, the Radiasteridae has been assigned to the order Paxillosida, and Gephyreaster is similarly placed in a molecular evaluation; Radiaster has not yet been treated in a molecular study. In molecular treatment, an approximately traditional Paxillosida is a sister taxon to a significant part of the traditional Valvatida. Comparative morphology of Mesozoic and extant asteroids enables a hypothesis for a stemward, Mesozoic paxillosidan.

Impairments of attention and executive functions are common sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The anterior cingulate is implicated in conflict-related task performance, such as the Stroop, and is susceptible to TBI-related injury due to its frontal location and proximity to the rough surface of the falx cerebri. We investigated the relationship between cingulate cortex volume and performance on tasks of selective attention and cognitive flexibility (single-trial Stroop and Auditory Consonant Trigrams [ACT]). Participants consisted of 12 adults with severe TBI and 18 controls. T1-weighted volumetric MRI data were analyzed using automated cortical reconstruction, segmentation, parcellation, and volume measurement. Cortical volume reductions were prominent bilaterally in frontal, temporal, and inferior parietal regions. Specific regional reduction of the cingulate cortex was observed only for cortical volume of right caudal anterior cingulate (cACC). The TBI group performed significantly worse than control participants on the Stroop and ACT tasks. Findings suggest that atrophy of the right cACC may contribute to reduced performance on executive function tasks, such as the Stroop and ACT, although this is likely but one node of an extensive brain network involved in these cognitive processes. Summary
Executive Summary
Analysis in Chapter 12 shows that a radical transformation of the fossil energy landscape is feasible for simultaneously meeting the multiple sustainability goals of wider access to modern energy carriers, reduced air pollution health risks, enhanced energy security, and major greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions.
Fossil fuels will dominate energy use for decades to come. Two findings apply to developing and industrialized countries alike. First, fossil fuels must be used judiciously – by designing energy systems for which the quality of energy supply is well matched to the quality of energy service required, and by exploiting other opportunities for realizing high efficiencies. Second, continued use of coal and other fossil fuels in a carbon-constrained world requires that carbon capture and storage (CCS) becomes a major carbon mitigation activity.
Since developing and industrialized countries have different energy priorities, strategies for fossil energy development will be different between these regions in the short term, but must converge in the long term. The focus in developing countries should be on increasing access to modern and clean energy carriers, building new manufacturing and energy infrastructures that anticipate the evolution to low carbon energy systems, and exploiting the rapid growth in these infrastructures to facilitate introduction of the advanced energy technologies needed to meet sustainability goals. Rapidly growing economies are good theaters for innovation. In industrialized countries, where energy infrastructures are largely already in place, a high priority should be overhauling existing coal power plant sites to add additional capabilities (such as coproduction of power and fuels) and CCS.

The Catalina Real-time Transient Survey (CRTS) currently covers 33,000 deg2 of the sky in search of transient astrophysical events, with time base-lines ranging from 10 minutes to ~7 years. Data provided by the Catalina Sky Survey provide an unequalled base-line against which > 4,000 unique optical transient events have been discovered and openly published in real-time. Here we highlight some of the discoveries of CRTS.

Asymmetry of waking electroencephalography (EEG) alpha power in frontal regions has been correlated with waking emotional reactivity and the emotional content of dream reports. Little is known regarding alpha asymmetry during sleep. The present study was performed to compare alpha power and alpha power asymmetry in various brain regions across states of sleep and wakefulness. Waking and sleep EEG were recorded in a group of patients undergoing polysomnographic evaluation for possible sleep disorders. Alpha EEG asymmetry in frontal and temporal regions was significantly correlated in waking versus sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. These results suggest that patterns of frontal alpha asymmetry are stable across sleep and waking and may be related to emotional reactivity during dreaming. During sleep, alpha power was highest during slow-wave sleep and lowest during REM sleep. Implications of these data for understanding the functional significance of alpha power during waking and sleeping are considered.

The composition and antibiotic sensitivity pattern of bacteria recovered from the hands of nurses and physicians in two service units of a major teaching hospital were compared with those found in a control population. Significant differences in the composition of bacteria were found in dermatology and oncology unit personnel. Staphylococcus aureus was recovered from 31% of dermatology nurses and 37% of dermatology physicians compared with 20% of oncology nurses, 15% of oncology physicians, and 17% of controls. Oncology personnel had a significantly higher carriage of gramnegative bacteria, yeasts, and multiple antibiotic-resistant, aerobic coryneforms (group JK bacteria). Both dermatology and oncology nursing personnel were colonized by organisms resistant to multiple antibiotics. Methicillin resistance was found in 26% and 66% of the staphylococci recovered from dermatology and oncology nurses respectively. Flora from physicians on the two units had sensitivity patterns similar to controls.

The surface reflectivity of ion implanted silicon is a function of the entire past history of the material, including the nature of the implanted species and the implant dose. It is influenced by interference effects, arising from discontinuities in index of refraction at the surface and at the boundary between damaged and undamaged material. The reflectivity may be either higher or lower than that of the unimplanted silicon. As the crystalline silicon regrows from below, the reflectivity changes because of variable constructive or destructive interference. This paper describes monitoring of the surface reflectivity during continuous laser annealing. The beam from a continuous argon ion laser is scanned in a raster pattern over the silicon surface. The surface reflectivity for a HeNe laser beam is monitored as a function of time during crystalline regrowth. The reflectivity contains an oscillatory component which arises because of changes in interference due to the decreasing thickness of the noncrystalline layer. The oscillatory behavior produces a signature characteristic of the annealing. The reflectivity monitoring technique is useful for investigating the influence of parameters such as the spatial profile of the laser beam and the implantation dose on the annealing characteristics. The results are correlated with measurements of the depth profile of the implanted ions, as revealed by anodic oxidation and stripping.
