Impaired glucose tolerance in first-episode drug-naïve patients with schizophrenia: relationships with clinical phenotypes and cognitive deficits

Background
Schizophrenia patients have a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) than normals. We examined the relationship between IGT and clinical phenotypes or cognitive deficits in first-episode, drug-naïve (FEDN) Han Chinese patients with schizophrenia.
MethodA total of 175 in-patients were compared with 31 healthy controls on anthropometric measures and fasting plasma levels of glucose, insulin and lipids. They were also compared using a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Neurocognitive functioning was assessed using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Patient psychopathology was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).
ResultsOf the patients, 24.5% had IGT compared with none of the controls, and they also had significantly higher levels of fasting blood glucose and 2-h glucose after an oral glucose load, and were more insulin resistant. Compared with those patients with normal glucose tolerance, the IGT patients were older, had a later age of onset, higher waist or hip circumference and body mass index, higher levels of low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides and higher insulin resistance. Furthermore, IGT patients had higher PANSS total and negative symptom subscale scores, but no greater cognitive impairment except on the emotional intelligence index of the MCCB.
ConclusionsIGT occurs with greater frequency in FEDN schizophrenia, and shows association with demographic and anthropometric parameters, as well as with clinical symptoms but minimally with cognitive impairment during the early course of the disorder.

The high Al content AlGaN epilayers have been obtained by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), and the optical property has been investigated by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Longitudinal-optic (LO) phonon mode has been studied by Raman scattering. Further analysis shows that the edge dislocation is an important factor influencing optical quality of AlGaN epilayers, and it also shows that the correlation between the A1 (LO) polar modes and the edge dislocation is intensive, which may be expected to become a characterization method of the related crystal defects.
Collimation of laser-driven energetic protons in a capillary

Energetic divergent proton beams can be generated in the interaction of ultra-intense laser pulses with solid-density foil targets via target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA). In this paper, a scheme using a capillary to reduce the proton beam divergence is proposed. By two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, it is shown that strong transverse electric and magnetic fields rapidly grow at the inner surface of the capillary when the laser-driven hot electrons propagate through the target and into the capillary. The spontaneous magnetic field collimates the electron flow, and the ions dragged from the capillary wall by hot electrons neutralize the negative charge and thus restrain the transverse extension of the sheath field set up by electrons. The proton beam divergence, which is mainly determined by the accelerating sheath field, is therefore reduced by the transverse limitation of the sheath field in the capillary.

Antioxidant efficacy of curcuminoids from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) powder in broiler chickens fed diets containing aflatoxin B1

A 3-week-feeding study (1–21 d post-hatch) was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of total curcuminoids (TCMN), as an antioxidant, to ameliorate the adverse effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in broiler chickens. Turmeric powder (Curcuma longa L.) that contained 2·55 % TCMN was used as a source of TCMN. Six cage replicates of five chicks each were assigned to each of six dietary treatments, which included: basal diet; basal diet supplemented with 444 mg/kg TCMN; basal diet supplemented with 1·0 mg/kg AFB1; basal diet supplemented with 74 mg/kg TCMN and 1·0 mg/kg AFB1; basal diet supplemented with 222 mg/kg TCMN and 1·0 mg/kg AFB1; basal diet supplemented with 444 mg/kg TCMN and 1·0 mg/kg AFB1. The addition of 74 and 222 mg/kg TCMN to the AFB1 diet significantly (P < 0·05) improved weight gain and feed efficiency. Increase (P < 0·05) in relative liver weight in birds fed AFB1 was significantly reduced (P < 0·05) with the addition of 74, 222 and 444 mg/kg TCMN to the AFB1 diet. The inclusion of 222 mg/kg TCMN ameliorated the adverse effects of AFB1 on serum chemistry in terms of total protein, albumin and γ-glutamyl transferase activity. The decreased antioxidant functions due to AFB1 were also alleviated by the inclusion of 222 mg/kg TCMN. It is concluded that the addition of 222 mg/kg TCMN to the 1·0 mg/kg AFB1 diet demonstrated maximum antioxidant activity against AFB1.

Performance of an improved shock absorber designed for absorbing and isolating the oil test pipe vibration is researched in this paper. 3D finite element model is established for the analysis of the shock absorber system accurately by the FEA software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. Numerical simulations show that the effect of the shock absorber can be greatly improved by optimizing the plastic material parameter. In the practice petroleum well test, the new designed shock absorber showed good shock absorption effect and no damage on the detecting instruments was observed even after ten times loading.

One performance and one ileal apparent digestibility (IAD) trial were conducted to investigate the performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal disaccharidase activity of weaner/grower pigs given diets containing Chinese stored brown rice (CSBR) extruded and with exogenous enzyme supplements. In experiment 1, 96 crossbred (Duroc X Landrace X Large White) piglets weaned at 24 days of age were randomly divided into four groups according to a 2 X 2 factorial design. The animals were given four diets: (1) CSBR without enzyme supplementation, (2) CSBR supplemented with 625 mg a-amylase (2509 enzyme activity units) and 200 mg glucoamylase per kg (20018 enzyme activity units) per kg diet, (3) a normal temperature extruded CSBR (NTECSBR) without enzyme supplementation, and (4) NTECSBR supplemented with 625 mg a-amylase (2508 enzyme activity units) and 200 mg glucoamylase (20010 enzyme activity units) per kg diet. Growth, food consumption and specific activity of disaccharides in sections of the digestive tract were measured. In experiment 2, six male grower pigs with a mean initial body weight 21 kg, fitted with a simple ‘T’ cannula at the terminal ileum were used in a 6X6 Latin-square design. In addition to CSBR and NTECSBR diets with and without enzymes, a low temperature extruded diet LTECSBR with and without enzymes (as for other diets) was introduced. IAD of nutrients was measured. Extrusion resulted in a poorer (P < 0.05) food/gain for weaned pigs. Extrusion and enzyme supplementation had no influence (P > 0.05) on average daily food intake and average daily gain. Extrusion tended to improve (P = 0.075) IAD of starch but IAD of energy, dry matter, crude protein and amino acids were not influenced (P > 0.05). Enzyme supplementation had no effect on IAD of amino acids (P > 0.05), except for increasing IAD of lysine, threonine and isoleucine (P < 0.05). Extrusion and enzyme supplementation resulted in a higher (P < 0.05) maltase activity in the duodenum at day 14 of the trial. However, extrusion decreased (P < 0.05) the activity of maltase, isomaltase, sucrase and lactase in the jejunum at day 28. Enzyme supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the activities of maltase, isomaltase, trehalase and lactase in the jejunum at day 28. There was a positive extrusion X enzyme interaction (P < 0.05) for the activity of maltase and trehalase in the duodenum at day 14; a negative interaction was observed for the activity of lactase, maltase, isomaltase and trehalase in the jejunum at day 28. The results suggest that neither extrusion nor enzyme supplementation are necessary for CSBR to be used in pig diets.
Microstructures and Photoluminescence in Nanocrystalline Barium Titanate

Barium titanate ultrafine particles are prepared by hydrothermal method at low temperature. Their phase structures and photoluminescence (PL) properties are examined by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The critical size of the cubic-tetragonal phase transition is about 48 nm and the lattice parameter ratio c/a equals 1.003. Strong photoluminescence is observed with central frequency located at 695 nm. The spectral behaviors at different annealing times and temperatures are studied. We attribute them to the semiconducting hexagonal phase embeded in the nanophase cubic BaTiO3to form trap centers and cause PL process.
Reliability of Submicron Mosfet's with Deposited Gate Oxides under F-N Injection and Hot-Carrier Stress

In this paper, submicron nMOSFET's with thin LPCVD gate oxides deposited using chemical reaction of dichlorosilane and nitrous oxide at 800 °C were evaluated. Fowler-Nordheim injection was performed to compare the resistance to electron trapping and interface-state generation of these LPCVD oxides to that of the thermally grown oxides at 850 °C. It was found that with an 850 °C 20-minute post-deposition nitrogen anneal, the LPCVD oxides exhibit comparable immunity to electron trapping as the thermal oxides. Transistor characteristics such as Δgm/gm, ΔID/ID revealed to be similar for both oxides, but there was an order of magnitude higher ΔVt detected for the LPCVD oxide films (with/without anneal) than the thermal oxides. The mechanism responsible for the hot-carrier induced device degradation was also characterized in this study. It was found that the major source of hot-carrier damage was electron trapping for the thermal oxides and the N2 - annealed LPCVD oxides; while for the as-deposited LPCVD oxides, both electron trapping and interface-state generation contributed to device degradation.
