Continual low-level exposure of sheep to the helminth Teladorsagia circumcincta elicits a temporary protective immunity, where factors in the immune abomasal mucosa prevent penetration of infective larvae, but which is essentially lost within 6 weeks of cessation of parasite challenge. Here, a proteomic approach was used to identify proteins that are differentially regulated in immune compared to naïve sheep, as potential key mediators of immunity. Six naïve sheep and 12 sheep trickle-infected with T. circumcincta were treated with anthelmintic, and the naïve (control) and 6 immune sheep were killed 7 days later. The remaining 6 sheep (immune waning) were killed 42 days after anthelmintic treatment. Abomasal tissue samples were subjected to 2D-gel electrophoresis and densitometric analysis. Selected spots (n=73) were identified by peptide mass fingerprinting and confirmatory Western blotting was carried out for 10 proteins. Spots selectively up-regulated in immune versus control, but not immune waning versus control sheep, included galectin-15 and thioredoxin, which were confirmed by Western blotting. In immune sheep, serum albumin was significantly down-regulated and albumin proteolytic cleavage fragments were increased compared to controls. Unexpectedly, albumin mRNA was relatively highly expressed in control mucosa, down-regulated in immune, and was immunolocalized to mucus-producing epithelial cells. Thus we have identified differential expression of a number of proteins following T. circumcincta trickle infection that may play a role in host protection and inhibition of parasite establishment.

Benevolent, long-term care can threaten older adults' sense of autonomy in a residential home environment. Increasing reliance on a hotel style of living has been seen to erode social identity, life satisfaction and even survival or lifespan. Drawing on evidence from both gerontological and social psychological literature, this paper examines the links between the empowerment of residents and their subsequent quality of life in the context of a move into a new care facility in a medium-sized town in South-West England. A longitudinal experiment was conducted during which 27 residents on one floor of a new facility were involved in decisions surrounding its décor, while those on another floor were not. The residents' attitudes and behaviour were monitored at three points over five months (four weeks pre-move, four weeks post-move, and four months post-move). Consistent with the social identity literature, members of the empowered group reported increased identification with staff and fellow residents in the new home, displayed enhanced citizenship, reported improved wellbeing, and made more use of the communal space. Moreover the staff found the empowered residents to be more engaged with their environment and the people around them, to be generally happier and to have better health. These patterns were observed one month after the move and remained four months later. Some implications for theory and practice are discussed.

The discovery that dopants, such as Ti, cause NaAlH4 to reversibly desorb H2 at mild conditions has spurred a great deal of research into complex metal hydrides. However, no complex hydride meets the targets for automotive hydrogen storage. Our approach is to accelerate the rate of discovery of improved hydrides and dopants through the combination of Virtual High Throughput Screening (VHTS) and Combinatorial Synthesis and Screening (CSS). Our CSS methods will allow us to screen thousands of samples in a year. These samples will be prepared by ball milling mixtures of hydrides and dopants similar to the established method of preparing Ti doped NaAlH4. VHTS exploits a molecular mechanics method to screen a thousand phases in a month. The combination of combinatorial methods and VHTS will help us discover the most promising complex hydrides for hydrogen storage. We will show the results of our medium throughput CSS and VHTS as applied to the NaAlH4–LiAlH4 – Mg(AlH4)2 mixed alanate compositions.

Back and neck pain is an established occupational disease for many professions. No previous studies have shown the association of back and neck pain with ENT surgery. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of neck and back pain in ENT consultants in the United Kingdom and which sub-specialities were most at risk. A national survey from 325 ENT consultants in the UK revealed that 72 per cent had either back pain or neck pain or even both. Of those with pain 53 per cent attributed their symptoms directly to ENT surgery. Highest figures were received from otologists, related to microscope work and prolonged sitting. The importance of these findings has demonstrated the lack of awareness and adequate training to prevent long-term disability in ENT surgeons.
