Effects of a 28% N solution containing urea and ammonium nitrate (28% UAN) and a nonionic surfactant on efficacy, uptake, and translocation of chlorimuron ethyl ester in soybean and broadleaf weeds were investigated. Chlorimuron applied postemergence at 8.8 and 13 g ai/ha with either nonionic surfactant at 0.25% (v/v), 28% UAN at 9.4 L/ha, or nonionic surfactant plus 28% UAN controlled weeds better than without additives. Chlorimuron with nonionic surfactant and with 28% UAN controlled weeds similarly but with 28% UAN injured soybeans least. Chlorimuron with nonionic surfactant plus 28% UAN controlled velvetleaf best but injured soybeans most. Less than 2% of applied 14C-chlorimuron was absorbed in velvetleaf 84 h after treatment (HAT) when no additive was present, but adding nonionic surfactant, 28% UAN, and nonionic surfactant plus 28% UAN resulted in 21, 9, and 32% uptake, respectively, 84 HAT. Nonionic surfactant plus 28% UAN also increased translocation (primarily acropetal) of the 14C. Adding 28% UAN increased 14C-chlorimuron uptake in velvetleaf grown at low fertility but had no effect under high fertility.

The effects of formulation on clomazone volatilization and transport through soil were studied. After 22 days of leaching under unsaturated flow in 49-cm long intact soil cores, greater clomazone movement was observed in Plainfield sand than in Cisne silt loam or Drummer silty clay loam soils. Soil clomazone concentrations resulting in injury to oats occurred throughout Plainfield soil cores but were restricted to the upper 14 cm of Cisne and Drummer soils. In addition, clomazone was detected in the leachate from Plainfield soil only. In a similar study with Plainfield sand cores, clomazone was less mobile than atrazine; encapsulation of the herbicides in starch granules did not affect clomazone movement but greatly decreased atrazine movement from the soil surface. Similarly, starch encapsulation did not affect bioavailability of clomazone but did reduce bioavailability of atrazine. In a laboratory study with continual air flow, volatilization of clomazone applied to the soil surface was reduced by encapsulation in starch and starch/clay granules. Clomazone volatilization was not affected by soil water content within a range of 33 to 1500 kPa water tension. Following soil saturation with water, clomazone volatilization from both liquid and granular formulations increased. Granule size appeared to have a greater impact than granule composition on clomazone volatilization.

Field studies using area-of-influence techniques were conducted in 1987 and 1988 to evaluate soybean growth and yield, and to predict soybean yield losses from photographs of jimsonweed and common cocklebur canopies. Differences in weed competitiveness within the 100-cm area of influence were induced by dates of soybean planting, locations, weed species, and years. Soybean yield losses within the first 20-cm interval from weeds correlated well with yield of all soybean plants within 100 cm of weeds (r2 = 0.86). Soybean growth responses as a function of distance from weeds were best described by complex polynomials, but simple linear functions, based on a data point from soybean plants nearest a weed and from the average of plants 60 to 100 cm from a weed, closely approximately actual yield losses (r2 = 0.96). Soybean yield losses were highly correlated (r2 = 0.84) with leaf area of weeds as viewed from directly above the weed-crop canopy. Weed canopy diameter, measured from overhead photographs 8 weeks after soybean emergence, also correlated well with soybean yield losses (r2= 0.82), but correlation with actual weed leaf area was not significant (r2 = 0.31).

Five biotypes of common cocklebur that were not controlled with acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides were tested in greenhouse and laboratory studies to determine the magnitude of resistance and cross-resistance to four ALS-inhibiting herbicides. In vivo inhibition of ALS was also evaluated. Based on phytotoxicity, all five ALS-resistant biotypes of common cocklebur were > 390 times more resistant than the susceptible biotype to imazethapyr. However, only four of these biotypes were also resistant to another imidazolinone, imazaquin. Two biotypes were cross-resistant to the sulfonylurea, chlorimuron, and the triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilide, NAF-75. One biotype demonstrated intermediate susceptibility to imazaquin, chlorimuron, and NAF-75. In all cases, the resistance exhibited at the whole plant level was associated with an insensitive ALS.

Season-long interference of shattercane, giant foxtail, common cocklebur, and common lambsquarters in corn was evaluated in the field at weed densities from 0.4 to 13.1 plants or clumps/m of corn row during 1985, 1986, and 1987. Corn seed yields decreased linearly with increases in the density of clumps of 2 to 3 shattercane plants and 5 to 8 giant foxtail plants, reaching 22% yield loss at 6.6 shattercane clumps/m of row and 18% yield loss at 13.1 giant foxtail clumps/m of row. Increases in common cocklebur density caused corn yields to decrease curvilinearly in 1985 with a maximum predicted yield loss of 27% occurring at a density of 4.7 common cocklebur plants/m of row. In 1986 and 1987, yields decreased linearly as common cocklebur density increased to 6.6 plants/m of row, where a 10% yield loss was observed. Common lambsquarters reduced corn yields only in 1985. In this year, yields decreased curvilinearly with increasing weed density, resulting in a maximum yield loss of 12% at 4.9 common lambsquarters plants/m of row. Corn yields averaged 11600 kg/ha when grown without weed interference in these experiments.

Common cocklebur root and shoot interferences were investigated as factors causing soybean yield reductions in the field. Significant decreases in soybean yield resulted from common cocklebur shoot interference when the two were grown together with the common cocklebur roots confined in plastic bags. Soybean yield decreased further when common cocklebur roots were not confined, but this decrease resulted, in part, from increased common cocklebur shoot growth. Wire mesh cylinders of varying diameters, placed in gaps in the soybean rows and designed to spatially restrict soybean shoot growth, reduced yield more than did gaps alone. When similar cylinders lined with black plastic were placed next to the soybean rows to restrict both within-canopy light and space for soybean shoot growth, soybean yield was reduced most (44%) with concomitant changes in stem height, stem diameter, lodging, and branches, nodes, and pods/plant. Interference of common cocklebur with soybeans resulted primarily from shoot interference, and competition for light within the soybean canopy implicated as the major factor causing the soybean yield reduction.

Applications of both terbufos and nicosulfuron can result in a synergistic interaction that injures corn. Field studies were conducted at two Illinois locations in 1991 to determine the effect of insecticide formulation and application method on the serverity of this interaction. Terbufos, applied to the soil at planting, interacted with nicosulfuron applied postemergence to injure corn and reduce grain yield. In-furrow-applied terbufos caused a more injurious interaction to corn than terbufos placed in a surface band; the 15G formulation was more injurious than the 20CR formulation. Simulated rainfall timing experiments were conducted in 1992 and 1993 by treating corn with terbufos 15G and terbufos 20CR and applying rainfall (3.8 cm) 1, 7, or 14 d before nicosulfuron application. No visual injury or yield reductions were noted in corn treated with nicosulfuron alone. Terbufos 15G caused greater corn injury than did terbufos 20CR at each rainfall timing when sprayed with nicosulfuron. Corn injury and subsequent grain yield that can result from the interaction between nicosulfuron and terbufos was greater when simulated rainfall occurred 1 and 7 d before nicosulfuron application than when rainfall occurred 14 d before application.

Photosynthesis and growth responses to irradiance level during growth were compared in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. ‘Century’) and three broadleaf weeds to determine if these responses were associated with differences in shade tolerance among species. In response to reduced irradiance during growth, leaf thickness of all species decreased, while chlorophyll content per unit leaf volume and photosynthetic rate per unit leaf volume, measured at low irradiance, increased. Soybean and common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L. #3 XANST) also exhibited a decrease in soluble proteins on a leaf volume basis under reduced irradiance, and common cocklebur further exhibited a decrease in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPcase) protein per unit leaf volume. Decreased irradiance during growth did not alter the content of RuBPcase or other soluble proteins per unit leaf volume in jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L. # DATST) or velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic. # ABUTH). The superior shade tolerance of common cocklebur compared to the other species was attributed in part to the levels of RuBPcase and other photosynthetic proteins in leaves developed at low irradiance.

Normal field applications of both terbufos and nicosulfuron can cause decreased corn tolerance to nicosulfuron because terbufos inhibits nicosulfuron metabolism. In greenhouse studies, applications of 2,4-D at 0.07, 0.14, and 0.28 kg/ha with nicosulfuron reduced terbufos induced foliar injury by more than 50%. Plants treated with nicosulfuron, terbufos, and 2,4-D had significantly higher shoot dry weights than those treated with nicosulfuron and terbufos. When 2,4-D was applied sooner than 24 h before nicosulfuron application or later than 24 h after nicosulfuron application, it did not prevent the interaction. Uptake of 14C-nicosulfuron was increased by the presence of terbufos but was unaffected by 2,4-D. Translocation of 14C-nicosulfuron was low with the highest amounts occurring in the nicosulfuron plus terbufos treatment. Terbufos reduced metabolism of nicosulfuron at 4 and 24 h after treatment compared to plants without terbufos. Metabolism of nicosulfuron in plants treated with terbufos was increased by 2,4-D to a rate equivalent to that in plants not treated with terbufos.

Common cocklebur, jimsonweed, and velvetleaf were grown with soybeans in the field to determine how soybean interference affects weed canopy architecture. Common cocklebur had more leaves within the soybean canopy than jimsonweed or velvetleaf. At the end of the season, common cocklebur leaf area was distributed evenly below and above the top of the soybean canopy, while nearly all the jimsonweed and velvetleaf leaf area was above the soybean canopy. Common cocklebur exhibited more shade tolerance than jimsonweed or velvetleaf by also maintaining leaves in the shade within the soybean canopy. Differences among these weeds in leaf distribution within the soybean canopy were not related to differences in abscission of the lower leaves but to a differential response of lower axillary buds to soybean shading. Growth from lower axillary buds in jimsonweed and velvetleaf was strongly inhibited by soybean interference, but interference had little effect on lower axillary bud growth in common cocklebur. Axillary bud growth in the lower canopies of both common cocklebur and soybeans, and their similarity in height, caused these plants to compete for the same aboveground niche. However, common cocklebur had more extensive axillary growth along the lower stem than soybeans, which may allow it to compete for resources in this niche more aggressively than soybeans. Velvetleaf and jimsonweed did not share the same aboveground niche with soybeans due to the placement of their leaves above rather than within the soybean canopy. The lower branching characteristics and apparent shade tolerance of common cocklebur may be important factors in the superior competitive ability with soybeans compared to jimsonweed and velvetleaf.

Field studies were conducted in 1994 and 1995 at Dekalb and Urbana, IL, to evaluate preemergence broadleaf weed control and crop tolerance in imidazolinone resistant (IR) and susceptible (non-IR) corn using atrazine, imazethapyr, AC 263,222, CGA-152005, MON 12000 with and without MON 13900 (a safener), and flumetsulam + clopyralid. When sufficient rainfall occurred within 28 d of application to insure herbicide absorption, the IR corn variety was more tolerant than the susceptible variety to imazethapyr, AC 263,222, CGA-152005 at 40 and 80 g/ha, and MON 12000 with and without MON 13900. Overall crop tolerance of IR corn was equal to that of corn treated with atrazine for all herbicide treatments except CGA-152005, which injured IR corn. Control of velvetleaf, common lambsquarters, Pennsylvania smartweed, tall morningglory, and jimsonweed for all herbicide treatments was equal or superior to that of atrazine at 1.7 kg/ha. However, control of common cocklebur was significantly greater with atrazine compared to imazethapyr and the low rate of CGA-152005.

A common waterhemp biotype that was not controlled by triazine or acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides was isolated from a field in Bond County, IL, in the fall of 1996. Greenhouse and laboratory experiments determined resistance to atrazine and three ALS-inhibiting herbicides in this biotype. Based on whole-plant response, the Bond County common waterhemp biotype required over 1,000 times more imazethapyr relative to a susceptible biotype to reduce growth 50%. Cross-resistance to thifensulfuron, a sulfonylurea, and flumetsulam, a triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilide, was also detected. Based on in vivo enzyme assays, ALS in the Bond County common waterhemp biotype was 20-, > 8-, and 68-fold less sensitive than ALS in the susceptible biotype to imazethapyr, thifensulfuron, and flumetsulam, respectively. Whole-plant efficacy trials also indicated that the Bond County common waterhemp biotype required more than 20 kg ha−1 of atrazine to inhibit growth 50%. Chlorophyll fluorescence assays revealed that 100 nM atrazine inhibited photosynthesis in the susceptible biotype, whereas 10 M did not affect photosynthesis in the resistant biotype. Regions of the genes encoding ALS and D1 proteins were sequenced to determine the molecular basis for the resistances. Triazine resistance was conferred by a glycine for serine substitution at residue 264 of the D1 protein, while ALS resistance was conferred by a leucine for tryptophan substitution at residue 569 of ALS.

A survey determined the views of individuals in seven groups comprising the weed science community in the corn belt (primarily in Illinois) for importance of 8 environmental and 14 crop production issues and 16 weed species in setting weed science research priorities for the next 3 to 5 yr. The survey also considered if funding of research to solve these environmental and production issues should be from the private or public sector. Velvetleaf, foxtail species, and common lambsquarters were considered the top three weed species by all respondents, and each of these weeds was among the five most important weeds within each of the seven survey groups. Improving ground and surface water quality were the foremost environmental issues for all respondents, but soybean growers listed herbicide carryover as their top environmental concern. Reducing herbicide residues in food and developing sustainable practices were given low preference by all groups. Sustainable growers rated reducing herbicide carryover and minimizing applicator exposure as their lowest priorities. Among all respondents, the top three production issues were improved weed control in conservation tillage, more economical weed control, and improved integrated control strategies. Studying the biology/life cycles of weeds was the third highest production priority of University and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) weed scientists, but was the last choice when averaged over the aggregate survey group. Developing strategies for resistant weeds and herbicide-resistant crops were chemical dealers top two priorities. Industry representatives gave the former subject their highest rating and the latter their lowest rating. Crop consultants seemed to want decision aids, as they chose assessing weed loss/thresholds and developing weed control/economic models among their top three production issues. Both corn and soybean growers desired more economical weed control as a first choice, while sustainable growers wanted improved cultural control strategies. Corn and soybean growers ranked developing new herbicides among their top three choices, but this issue was the lowest choice of the sustainable growers. University, USDA, and industrial weed scientists suggested that their own organizations conduct the research on their highest priorities issues.

Effects of ammonium and methylammonium on foliar uptake of 14C-thifensulfuron, in the presence of 0.2% nonionic surfactant by vol, into velvetleaf were investigated. Total 14C uptake into velvetleaf 24 h after treatment was only 15% without addition of nitrogen, but addition of 0.32 M NH4Cl, urea ammonium nitrate, or CH3NH2·HCl increased total 14C uptake to 31, 38, or 59%, respectively. Total 14C uptake 24 h after treatment was increased 3- and 4-fold by addition of 0.08 and 0.16 M CH3NH2·HCl, respectively, but was not increased further by greater CH3NH2·HCl concentrations. Although the increase in 14C uptake was followed by an increase in total 14C translocated, the relative amount of 14C translocated (expressed as a percentage of total 14C uptake) was not affected by nitrogen additives. Enhancement of uptake of 14C-thifensulfuron by CH3NH2·HCl was partially reversed by addition of 0.16 M CaCl2 to the application solution.

We present a germination and emergence model that can be used as a sub-model in an individual-based model of population dynamics. Seed germination and seedling elongation rates were measured in petri dishes in the laboratory for ivyleaf morningglory, velvetleaf, corn, and soybean seeds, as functions of temperature and water potential. The analysis yielded a set of indices: the germination temperature index (GTI), the germination water index (GWI), the emergence temperature index (ETI), and the emergence water index (EWI). The seed populations were divided into 100 discrete cohorts, with each cohort (i), having its own germination rate (GR) as the product of a reference rate and the germination indices, or GRi = GRiREF × GTI × GWI. After germination, the emergence rate (ER) was the product of a reference rate and emergence indices, or ERi = ERREF × ETI × EWI. The model was tested against the timing of emergence in the field for seeds planted 1, 2, 4, and 8 cm deep in natural or rain-excluded environments. The predictions were more accurate for all depths combined than for any particular depth.

Ammonium fertilizers, petroleum oil concentrate, and nonionic surfactant were evaluated as postemergence spray additives to improve giant foxtail and volunteer corn control by 28 g ai ha−1 of the ethyl ester of quizalofop or 56 g ha−1 sethoxydim. Additions of 0.25% by vol nonionic surfactant or 2.5% petroleum oil concentrate improved grass control, but additions of 10% urea ammonium nitrate (28-0-0), 10% ammonium polyphosphate (10-34-0), or 0.1M ammonium sulfate (21-0-0-24S) did not consistently affect grass control. In laboratory studies with corn, greatest 14C absorption from leaf-applied 14C-quizalofop (8 h after treatment) was found with additions of petroleum oil concentrate (80% absorbed) or nonionic surfactant (18% absorbed), while less absorption was observed with treatments containing either no additive, urea ammonium nitrate, ammonium polyphosphate, or ammonium sulfate (8 to 13% absorbed). Surface tension and droplet size of spray solutions were affected primarily by additions of nonionic surfactant, petroleum oil concentrate, and the formulated herbicides. Solution density, solute potential, pH, and buffering capacity were primarily affected by fertilizer additions.

A four-year experiment was conducted near Urbana, IL to evaluate the effect of a rye cover crop on weed control, soybean yield and soil moisture. Soybeans were planted into either a rye mulch or corn stubble (with and without spring tillage). Giant foxtail, velvetleaf, smooth pigweed and common lambsquarters control in the rye mulch plots was generally greater than 90% and better than the corn residue treatments five weeks after planting. Weed control was generally better, except for lambsquarters, in the corn residue without spring tillage plots compared to the spring-tilled plots. Herbicides improved weed control in the corn residue plots but not in the no-till rye treatment, due to the excellent control by the rye mulch. Soil water content was lowest during June under the late-killed (killed at planting) rye during dry periods due to water depletion caused by the growing rye. During wet periods the rye mulch resulted in a wetter soil profile compared to the corn residue treatments. Soybean yields were reduced in late-killed rye compared to early-killed rye (killed 2 wk prior to planting) due to soybean stand reductions in the late killed rye. Yields in early-killed rye and spring-tilled treatments were similar to or better than soybeans planted in corn residue without spring tillage.

A method was developed and tested for in vivo assay of acetolactate synthase (ALS). The method used foliar application of 1,1-cyclopropanedicarboxylic acid (CPCA) to inhibit ketol-acid reductoisomerase, the enzyme immediately following ALS in biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids, thereby causing accumulation of acetolactate. Since the amount of acetolactate accumulation is a function of carbon flux through ALS, quantification of acetolactate accumulation determined ALS activity. Accumulation of acetolactate in soybean leaves resulted from CPCA rates as low as 15 g/ha and occurred within 1.5 h. Accumulation rates in soybean leaflets declined with leaf age from 84 μg/h/g tissue at 3 d to 17 μg/h/g tissue at 7 d. Foliar application of CPCA also caused acetolactate accumulation in corn, grain sorghum, velvetleaf, common cocklebur, and smooth pigweed. The ability of the in vivo assay to quantify the reduction in ALS activity following applications of ALS-inhibiting herbicides was validated by comparing ALS activity following thifensulfuron application to ‘Williams 82’ soybean, which has a sulfonylurea-sensitive ALS, and ‘Asgrow 3200’ soybean, which has a sulfonylurea-insensitive ALS. Thifensulfuron reduced ALS activity in Williams 82 soybean to 0, 0.8, 3.3, and 15.6% of the CPCA control at 6, 12, 24, and 48 HAT, but ALS activity in Asgrow 3200 soybean was reduced only to 34, 40, 57, and 88% of the CPCA control.

Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effect of soil organic matter on the synergistic interaction between nicosulfuron, a sulfonylurea herbicide, and the insecticide terbufos in corn. Terbufos was applied infurrow at planting to soils containing 1, 3, and 5% organic matter and nicosulfuron was applied POST to corn at the three-leaf growth stage. The combination of terbufos and nicosulfuron reduced corn fresh weight 75, 45, and 41 % in soils containing 1, 3, and 5% organic matter, respectively. Terbufos increased [14C]nicosulfuron uptake into corn grown in both 1 and 5% organic matter soils. Terbufos decreased epicuticular leaf wax deposition on corn leaves by 35 and 18% in 1 and 5% organic matter soils, respectively. [14C]Nicosulfuron was completely metabolized after 24 h in the absence of terbufos. In the presence of terbufos, 19 and 11% of intact [14C]nicosulfuron remained 24 h after treatment while 11 and 6% remained after 48 h in the 1 and 5% organic matter soils, respectively. In vivo acetolactate synthase activity was reduced to 3 and 20% of control by nicosulfuron at 24 h and to 6 and 38% of control at 48 h, respectively, in the 1 and 5% organic matter soils that contained terbufos. These experiments indicated that soil organic matter is an important factor in determining the level of injury expected from the synergistic interaction between nicosulfuron and terbufos in corn.

Volunteer corn (Zea mays L. # ZEAMX) is a troublesome weed in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] grown in the Corn Belt. Field studies were conducted in 1983 and 1984 at Champaign, IL, to determine the soybean growth and yield parameters affected by volunteer corn interference. Soybean yield was inversely and linearly related to volunteer corn clump density, with yield losses reaching 25% at 5380 clumps/ha (10 plants/clump). Volunteer corn clumps of 1, 4, 7, and 10 plants reduced soybean yields by 6, 16, 21, and 22%, respectively, at a density of 5380 clumps/ha. Treatments of either the butyl ester of fluazifop {(±)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy] propanoic acid} or glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] were applied at various dates between 2 and 12 weeks after soybean emergence (WAE) to a volunteer corn infestation of 5380 clumps/ha (10 plants/clump). Volunteer corn caused soybean yield losses of 2, 6, 12, 19, and 27% when herbicides were applied at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 WAE, respectively. Volunteer corn interference reduced soybean seed yield, plant dry weight, pod number, seed number, leaf fresh weight, and leaf area index, within 40 cm of a clump of 10 volunteer corn plants. A clump of 10 volunteer corn plants reduced soybean pod number/plant within a radius of 86 cm.
