Summary
This chapter situates the sixteenth-century drive to define ’Englishness’ through literature within a broader European context, charting the widespread efforts to reify ’national character’ through the production of standardised grammars for vernaculars and assertions of their peculiar grace. After surveying early modern thought on the relationship between language, nation and empire, the chapter discusses the particular strategy adopted by English writers (centrally Puttenham and Sidney) to establish the very peripheral barbarousness of the English tongue as a proof of its distinction, before pointing at the close towards the emerging role of empire in underpinning notions of Englishness.

Summary
In the summer of 1568, perhaps even as the Eglantine Table was making its way north from a London workshop to Derbyshire, George Turberville of Dorset was accompanying an embassy to Russia to promote the interests of the Muscovy Company. On his return he wrote to a friend in verse about the pervasiveness of board games in Russia, even among the serfs. ‘Because thou lovest to play friend Parker’, Turberville wrote, it might be of interest to know that in Muscovy
The common game is chesse, almost the simplest will
Both give a checke and eke a mate, by practise comes their skill.
Againe they dice as fast, the poorest rogues of all
Will sit them downe in open field, and there to gaming fall.
The alien environment in which Turberville finds himself serves only to emphasise the pervasive, indeed global, presence of gaming tables, evidence of a deep human compulsion to become captivated by boards, frames and grids, even in an environment, like a Russian field, most uncongenial to them.
Within the bounds of the friezes of the Eglantine Table, a profusion of interests are represented: in plant life, in godly and secular music, both vocal and instrumental, in the art of writing and in musical notation, in short-lived games of chance and in lines of inheritance stretching back to time immemorial. The teeming surface of the Table reveals the richness and variety of country-house life in the sixteenth century; it is a virtuosic attempt to fit, within a limited frame, the manifold occupations of an accomplished mind which, in the spirit of Renaissance humanism, desires to make itself universal: farsi universale. Whatever else the Eglantine Table might be, it is a witness to the compulsion, noted by Turberville in Russia, to turn from the complex and chaotic world towards schematic reductions of the same – a compulsion that can be traced through the tabular terminology used to describe these practices. Represented in the Eglantine marquetry are not only chess, backgammon and dicing tables (also known by the native form boards), but also music represented on the grids of tablature and the fretted fingerboards of the stringed instruments themselves.

Background
There is a growing interest in using cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) with people who have Asperger syndrome and comorbid mental health problems.
AimsTo examine whether modified group CBT for clinically significant anxiety in an Asperger syndrome population is feasible and likely to be efficacious.
MethodUsing a randomised assessor-blind trial, 52 individuals with Asperger syndrome were randomised into a treatment arm or a waiting-list control arm. After 24 weeks, those in the waiting-list control arm received treatment, while those initially randomised to treatment were followed up for 24 weeks.
ResultsThe conversion rate for this trial was high (1.6:1), while attrition was 13%. After 24 weeks, there was no significant difference between those randomised to the treatment arm compared with those randomised to the waiting-list control arm on the primary outcome measure, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety.
ConclusionsTrials of psychological therapies with this population are feasible. Larger definitive trials are now needed.

This volume provides the first transnational overview of the relationship between translation and the book trade in early modern Europe. Following an introduction to the theories and practices of translation in early modern Europe, and to the role played by translated books in driving and defining the trade in printed books, each chapter focuses on a different aspect of translated-book history - language learning, audience, printing, marketing, and censorship - across several national traditions. This study touches on a wide range of early modern figures who played myriad roles in the book world; many of them also performed these roles in different countries and languages. Topics treated include printers' sensitivity to audience demand; paratextual and typographical techniques for manipulating perception of translated texts; theories of readership that travelled across borders; and the complex interactions between foreign-language teachers, teaching manuals, immigration, diplomacy, and exile.

This article concerns application of cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy to volcanic quartz and its utility in assessing variation in trace quantities of Ti within individual crystals. CL spectroscopy provides useful details of intragrain compositional variability and structure but generally limited quantitative information on element abundances. Microbeam analysis can provide such information but is time-consuming and costly, particularly if large numbers of analyses are required. To maximize advantages of both approaches, natural and synthetic quartz crystals were studied using high-resolution hyperspectral CL imaging (1.2–5.0 eV range) combined with analysis via laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Spectral intensities can be deconvolved into three principal contributions (1.93, 2.19, and 2.72 eV), for which intensity of the latter peak was found to correlate directly with Ti concentration. Quantitative maps of Ti variation can be produced by calibration of the CL spectral data against relatively few analytical points. Such maps provide useful information concerning intragrain zoning or heterogeneity of Ti contents with the sensitivity of LA-ICPMS analysis and spatial resolution of electron microprobe analysis.
