Simple extended constant capacitance surface complexation models have been developed to represent the adsorption of polyaromatic dyes (9-aminoacridine, 3,6-diaminoacridine, azure A and safranin O) to kaolinite, and the competitive adsorption of the dyes with Cd. The formulation of the models was based on data from recent publications, including quantitative adsorption measurements over a range of conditions (varying pH and concentration), acid-base titrations and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic data. In the models the dye molecules adsorb as aggregates of three or four, forming outer-sphere complexes with sites on the silica face of kaolinite. Both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions are implicated in the adsorption processes. Despite their simplicity, the models fit a wide range of experimental data, thereby supporting the underlying hypothesis that the flat, hydrophobic, but slightly charged silica faces of kaolinite facilitate the aggregation and adsorption of the flat, aromatic, cationic dye molecules.

The strong adsorption to kaolinite of four polyaromatic, cationic dyes (9-aminoacridine, 3,6-diaminoacridine, azure A and safranin O), which adsorb much less to alumina or silica, was investigated by means of acid-base titrations, measurements of adsorption at varying pH and dye concentration, and by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The four dyes adsorb to kaolinite to similar extents, with little change over the pH range 3–10, but at higher pH (above the pKas of the dyes) the adsorption of 9-aminoacridine and 3,6-diaminoacridine decreases, that of azure A increases, and that of safranin O stays approximately constant. Although the dyes adsorb to kaolinite much more strongly than metal ions do, titration and spectroscopic data show that there is only limited chemical interaction between the adsorbed dyes and the kaolinite surface. The results indicate that electrostatic interaction between the dye molecules and the kaolinite surface is necessary for adsorption, but that hydrophobic interactions also contribute. It is proposed that the relatively hydrophobic silica faces of kaolinite, which carry low-density permanent negative charge, facilitate aggregation and adsorption of the positively charged, flat, aromatic dye molecules.

The competitive adsorption to kaolinite between Cd(II) and four polyaromatic dyes (9-aminoacridine, 3,6-diaminoacridine, azure A and safranin O) was studied in 5 mM KNO3 at 25°C. Under these conditions, Cd adsorbs to the silica face of kaolinite between about pH 4 and 6.5, but at higher pH, adsorbed Cd is progressively relocated to the crystal edges. In the presence of dye, less Cd adsorbed to kaolinite below pH 7. If sufficient dye was added to saturate the kaolinite surface, Cd adsorption was totally suppressed up to ∼pH 6. At higher pH, Cd followed the characteristic pattern for edge adsorption. In separate experiments 9-aminoacridine and azure A displaced pre-adsorbed Cd from kaolinite. The displacement curves were initially linear, with one Cd ion being displaced for every 13 dye molecules adsorbed at pH 5.5, and one Cd ion for every 35 dye molecules at pH 7.5. The interpretation of these results is that the dyes bind to kaolinite much more strongly than Cd(II) does, but only to the silica face.

The transmission rate of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) to gloves or gowns of healthcare personnel (HCP) caring for MRSA patients in a non–intensive care unit setting was 5.4%. Contamination rates were higher among HCP performing direct patient care and when patients had detectable MRSA on their body. These findings may inform risk-based contact precautions.

We studied the association between chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) concentration on skin and resistant bacterial bioburden. CHG was almost always detected on the skin, and detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus on skin sites was infrequent. However, we found no correlation between CHG concentration and bacterial bioburden.

Objective
To determine which healthcare worker (HCW) roles and patient care activities are associated with acquisition of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) on HCW gloves or gowns after patient care, as a surrogate for transmission to other patients.
DesignProspective cohort study.
SettingMedical and surgical intensive care units at a tertiary-care academic institution.
ParticipantsVRE-colonized patients on Contact Precautions and their HCWs.
MethodsOverall, 94 VRE-colonized patients and 469 HCW–patient interactions were observed. Research staff recorded patient care activities and cultured HCW gloves and gowns for VRE before doffing and exiting patient room.
ResultsVRE were isolated from 71 of 469 HCWs’ gloves or gowns (15%) following patient care. Occupational/physical therapists, patient care technicians, nurses, and physicians were more likely than environmental services workers and other HCWs to have contaminated gloves or gowns. Compared to touching the environment alone, the odds ratio (OR) for VRE contamination associated with touching both the patient (or objects in the immediate vicinity of the patient) and environment was 2.78 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.99–0.77) and the OR associated with touching only the patient (or objects in the immediate vicinity) was 3.65 (95% CI, 1.17–11.41). Independent risk factors for transmission of VRE to HCWs were touching the patient’s skin (OR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.15–4.13) and transferring the patient into or out of bed (OR, 2.66; 95% CI, 1.15–6.43).
ConclusionPatient contact is a major risk factor for HCW contamination and subsequent transmission. Interventions should prioritize contact precautions and hand hygiene for HCWs whose activities involve touching the patient.

The Full-sky Astrometric Mapping Explorer (FAME) is designed to perform an all-sky, astrometric survey with unprecedented accuracy. It will create a rigid astrometric catalog of 4 × 107 stars with 5 < mV < 15. For bright stars, 5 < mV < 9, FAME will determine positions and parallaxes accurate to < 50 μas, with proper motion errors < 50 μas/yr. For fainter stars, 9 < mV < 15, FAME will determine positions and parallaxes accurate to < 500 μas, with proper motion errors < 500 μas/yr. It will also collect photometric data on these 4 × 107 stars in four Sloan Digital Sky Survey colors. NASA selected FAME to be one of five MIDEX missions funded for a concept study. In October 1999, NASA selected FAME for launch in 2004 as the MIDEX-4 mission in its Explorer program.

The effect of the diffusion of monatomic hydrogen into InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells has been investigated using photoluminescence (PL) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS). The structures were grown by molecular beam epitaxy and hydrogenated with a remote plasma. For In0.2Ga0.8AlxGA1-xAs quantum wells, hydrogenation significant increases the integrated PL intensity from bound excitons at 77 K. The enhancement of the PL is ascribed to removal of nonradiative recombination centers by hydrogen passivation of defects either at the heterojunction interface or within the epilayers. This PL enhancement (and defect passivation) increases as the Al concentration in the AlGaAs layers increases from 0 to 33 at%. A 50% increase of PL intensity is observed for InGaAs/GaAs. For 33 at%, the increase is a factor of 9. We also diffused deuterium into these InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells. The enhancement of the PL by deuteration was similar to that by hydrogenation. The isotopie substitution permits the determination of the depth distribution of deuterium in the multilayered structure by SIMS. SIMS results support the conclusion that more defects are passivated in the higher Al concentration samples.

The effect of hydrogenation on DX centers was evaluated for both Si- and Se-doped AlxGa1-xAs (x=0.26 and 0.23). MBE-grown AIGaAs:Si and MOCVD-grown AIGaAs:Se epilayers were hydrogenated with either monatomic hydrogen or deuterium from a remote plasma at 250°C for 1h. The passivation and subsequent reactivation kinetics were studied with C-V and DLTS techniques. Reactivation was investigated in the space-charge layer of Schottky diodes under different bias conditions. While the Group VI and Group IV deep donors respond similarly to passivation, they display significantly different reactivation kinetics, with thermal dissociation energies of 1.5 eV and 1.2 eV for Se-H and Si-H, respectively. These values are close to the energies previously determined for reactivation of the Si and Se shallow donors in both AIGaAs and GaAs. Therefore, they are not significantly dependent on the Al concentration (x < 0.30) even for donors residing on the As sublattice. Our results are consistent with the Chang-Chadi model of DX centers.

Hydrogen passivation and thermal reactivation of Si donors and Be acceptors were investigated in In0.52Al0.48As grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The semiconducting alloy was passivated by exposure to monatomic hydrogen or deuterium from a remote microwave plasma. The passivation was achieved by exposing the samples to monatomic hydrogen at temperatures between 200 and 250 °C for 1h. The electrical activity of the dopants was monitored by spreading resistance and C-V measurements. The samples were homogeneously doped to concentrations of 1.5×1016 or 6×1017 Si / cm3 and 6×1017 Be / cm3. Both dopants were passivated by more than two orders of magnitude through the epitaxial layers. An additional annealing step (440°C, 5 min) resulted in a complete reactivation of the passivated dopants. In addition to the electrical measurements, secondary ion mass spectroscopy showed that for both the Be- and the Si-doped layers the hydrogen profiles were essentially identical to the dopant profiles throughout the epilayers. This behaviour suggests that hydrogen migration is a dopant-trapping-limited process in n-and p-type In0.52Al0.48As.
