Leprocaulon inexpectatum is described here as a new lichen species and the fourth member of the genus known from Europe. It is characterized by the crustose-granulose, blue-grey to bluish green thallus composed of ±discrete, soredia-like granules c. 45–70 μm in diameter, and the production of usnic acid and zeorin. Based on ITS rDNA, the lichen is closely related to the saxicolous American species L. beechingii. The new species is reported here from numerous localities in north-western Italy. It occurs on the bark of oaks, chestnut, and black locust in open deciduous forests, often in floodplain ecosystems. Our investigation of its photobiont identity using ITS, 18S and rbcL demonstrated that its symbiotic partner represents an undescribed species within the genus Symbiochloris (Trebouxiophyceae). We provide an identification key to sterile crustose sorediate lichens containing usnic acid and zeorin found in Europe.

The manna lichens, a group of vagrant species with subfruticose and subfoliose thalli in the genus Circinaria Link, have received attention for millennia. Here, a new manna lichen species, Circinaria nimisii sp. nov. (Megasporaceae), is described and illustrated. This vagrant lichen is found on Mount Olympus in Greece and is the fourth known manna lichen in Europe. The new taxon is characterized by its subfruticose, densely-branched thallus with a muddy, earthy colour, whitish pseudocyphellae on tips of branches, mature apothecia distinctly adnate to stipitate, and paraplectenchymatous cortex tissue. Molecular sequence data from the standard barcoding marker (nrITS) also corroborate the distinction of this species from closely related congeners. Finally, Agrestia zerovii, previously known only from its type locality in Ukraine, is proposed as a new synonym of Circinaria hispida.

Based on density functional theory, we recently suggested that metastable α-WB2 is a promising candidate combining very high hardness with high toughness. These calculations further suggested that the addition of Tantalum supports the crystallization of α-structured W1−xTaxB2−z, with only minor reduction in toughness. Thus, various Ta containing WB2-based coatings have been synthesized using physical vapor deposition. With increasing Ta content, the hardness increases from ~41 GPa (WB2) to ~45 GPa (W0.74Ta0.26B2). In situ micromechanical cantilever bending tests exhibit fracture toughness KIC values of 3.7 to 3.0 MPa√m for increasing Ta content (single-phased up to 26 at.% Ta).

The genus Rinodina (Physciaceae), with approximately 300 species, has been subject to few phylogenetic studies. Consequently taxonomic hypotheses in Rinodina are largely reliant on phenotypic data, while hypotheses incorporating DNA dependent methods remain to be tested. Here we investigate Rinodina degeliana/R. subparieta and the Rinodina mniaraea group, which previously have not been subjected to comprehensive molecular and phenotypic studies. We conducted detailed morphological, anatomical, chemical, molecular phylogenetic and species delimitation studies including 24 newly sequenced specimens. We propose that Rinodina degeliana and R. subparieta are conspecific and that chemical morphs within the R. mniaraea group should be recognized as distinct species. We also propose the placement of the recently described genus Oxnerella in Physciaceae.

The crustose lichen genus Mycoblastus in the Northern Hemisphere includes eight recognized species sharing large, simple ascospores produced 1–2 per ascus in strongly pigmented biatorine apothecia. The monophyly of Mycoblastus and the relationship of its various species to Tephromelataceae have never been studied in detail. Data from ITS rDNA and the genes coding for translation elongation factor 1-α and DNA replication licensing factor mini-chromosome maintenance complex 7 support the distinctness of Mycoblastus s. str. from the core of the Tephromelataceae, but recover M. fucatus and an undescribed Asian species as strongly supported within the latter group. We propose accommodating these two species in a new genus, Violella, which is characterized by its brownish inner ascospore walls, Fucatus-violet hymenial pigment granules and secondary chemistry, and discuss the position of Violella relative to Calvitimela and Tephromela. We describe the new species Violella wangii T. Sprib. & Goffinet to accommodate a new species with roccellic acid from Bhutan, China, India and the Russian Far East. We also exclude Mycoblastus indicus Awasthi & Agarwal from the genus Mycoblastus and propose for it the new combination Malmidea indica (Awasthi & Agarwal) Hafellner & T. Sprib.

To test the phylogenetic position of phenotypically peculiar species in the Physciaceae we generated 47 new sequences (26 of nrITS region and 21 of mtSSU rDNA) from 19 crustose taxa of Physciaceae mainly from the genus Rinodina. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the Buellia and Physcia groups. The analysis revealed a considerable variability of characters traditionally used for classification, especially in the delimitation of the genera Buellia and Rinodina. While ascus types agree well with the distinction of the Buellia and Physcia groups, none of the other traditional characters, including excipulum type and ascospore thickening, were consistent within subclades of the Physcia group. We suggest that both excipulum type and ascospore characters are rather dynamic in the evolution of Rinodina species and only appear consistent in morphologically more complex foliose and fruticose groups, which are characterized by thallus characters not present in the crustose groups. Two recent taxonomic changes are supported by molecular characters: Endohyalina insularis (syn. ‘Rinodina’ insularis) and Rinodina lindingeri (syn. ‘Buellia’ lindingeri). In addition Rinodina parvula (syn. ‘Buellia’ parvula) is reinstated. New records for Endohyalina brandii, E. diederichii, E. insularis and Rinodina albana are presented.

Rinodina brasiliensis, a corticolous isidiate species with large Pachysporaria-type ascospores is described from south-eastern Brazil. The new species is closely related to R. dolichospora and to R. guianensis.Rinodina confinis is a synonym of R. dolichospora. Notes on the taxonomy, morphology, anatomy, chemistry and distribution of these three taxa are given. Descriptions and iconography are provided. A key to species is also included.

Ab-initio calculations using the Vienna ab-initio simulation package (VASP) were performed for a high Nb bearing γ TiAl based alloy with a composition of Ti-46at.%Al-9at.%Nb in order to evaluate the effect of Nb on the crystal structure. The calculations revealed that upon doping with Nb the resulting structure can have Ti and Nb atoms on Al-sites, which leads to a reduction of the c/a ratio of the tetragonal γ TiAl cell to ~1.In contrast, the c/a ratio is increased, compared to the binary phase, if the Nb atoms occupy solely Ti sites and if Ti antisite defects (i.e. Ti on the Al sublattice) are formed. The relaxed structure models were used to perform high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) image simulations. The results showed that the positions of the Nb atoms should be detectable by these high spatial resolution methods, although it might be easier by HAADF-STEM investigations due to the stronger dependence of the signal on the atomic number Z.

Transition metal nitride-based, wear-resistant hard coatings on cutting tools and other substrates often lack distinct colorations allowing product differentiation and self-lubricating properties. In the present work, the possibility of achieving these objectives for sputtered coatings based on the purple-red Al2Au phase within the Al-Au system was investigated. Coatings were characterized with respect to morphology, chemical and phase composition, hardness, optical, oxidation and tribological properties. Al2Au-containing coatings were deposited with dense, fine-grained structures yielding a hardness of 4 GPa and pink coloration. The coatings were stable up to about 850°C, where the onset of oxidation occurs. Low friction coefficients against alumina were achieved between 500 and 700°C. The concept of applying Al2Au-containing coatings as a colored self-lubricating layer on top of a hard coated cemented carbide tool warrants further investigations.

Three species of the Buellia epigaea-group, Buellia dijiana Trinkaus, Buellia georgei Trinkaus, Mayrhofer & Elix, and Buellia lobata Trinkaus & Elix, are described as new from Australia. The taxonomy, morphology, anatomy, chemistry, biogeography, and ecology of the three taxa are discussed. Characters which distinguish these species from the corresponding taxa in the northern hemisphere include secondary compounds (presence of xanthones) and filiform conidia. An extended key is provided for the whole Buellia epigaea group as well as other terricolous species of the genus.

The identity of photobionts from 20 species of the Physciaceae from different habitats and geographical regions has been determined by ITS rDNA sequence comparisons in order to estimate the diversity of photobionts within that lichen group, to detect patterns of specificity of mycobionts towards their photobionts and as a part of an ongoing study to investigate possible parallel cladogenesis of both symbionts. Algal-specific PCR primers have been used to determine the ITS rDNA sequences from DNA extractions of dried lichens that were up to 5 years old. Direct comparisons and phylogenetic analyses allowed the assignment of Physciaceae photobionts to four distinct clades in the photobiont ITS rDNA phylogeny. The results indicate a diversity within the genus Trebouxia Puymaly and Physciaceae photobionts that is higher than expected on the basis morphology alone. Physciaceae photobionts belonged to 12 different ITS lineages of which nine could unambiguously be assigned to six morphospecies of Trebouxia. The identity of the remaining three sequences was not clarified; they may represent new species. Specificity at the generic level was low as a whole range of photobiont species were found within a genus of Physciaceae and different ranges were detected. The photobionts of Physcia (Schreb.) Michaux were closely related and represented one morphospecies of Trebouxia, whereas the algal partners of Buellia De Not and Rinodina (Ach.) Gray were in distant lineages of the ITS phylogeny and from several Trebouxia morphospecies. Photobiont variation within a genus of Physciaceae may be due to phylogeny, geographical distance or because photobionts from neighbouring lichens were taken (“algal sharing“). At the species level Physciaceae mycobionts seem to be rather selective and contained photobionts that were very closely related within one morphospecies of Trebouxia.

Caloplaca erecta Arup & H. Mayrhofer is described here as new to science. It belongs to a group of dwarf-fruticose species, but cannot be accommodated within any of the known species of that group. It forms dense cushions of erect lobes on siliceous rocks, and is known only from Mt. Maungatua. This is the second dwarf-fruticose species of Caloplaca in the Australasian area, in addition to C. cribosa.

The morphology, anatomy, chemistry, habitat and distribution of eight southern-Huropean sorediate, blastidiate or isidiate species of the genus Rinodina are treated. One species, R. nimisii, from Corsica and Sardinia, is new to science. Rinodina erysiphaea, R. sorediata and R. sipmanii are synonyms of R. colobinoides. A key is provided. Other known sorediate, blastidiate or isidiate species arc briefly discussed.
