This editorial considers the value and nature of academic psychiatry by asking what defines the specialty and psychiatrists as academics. We frame academic psychiatry as a way of thinking that benefits clinical services and discuss how to inspire the next generation of academics.

There are many structural problems facing the UK at present, from a weakened National Health Service to deeply ingrained inequality. These challenges extend through society to clinical practice and have an impact on current mental health research, which was in a perilous state even before the coronavirus pandemic hit. In this editorial, a group of psychiatric researchers who currently sit on the Academic Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and represent the breadth of research in mental health from across the UK discuss the challenges faced in academic mental health research. They reflect on the need for additional investment in the specialty and ask whether this is a turning point for the future of mental health research.

This article proposes a new literary history of British Asia that examines its earliest communities and cultural institutions in translocal and regional registers. Combining translocalism and regionalism redefines Anglo‐Indian writing as constituted by multisited forces, only one of which is the reciprocal exchange between Britain and its colonies that has been the prevailing emphasis of literary criticism about empire. I focus on the eighteenth century's overlooked military men and lowlevel colonial administrators who wrote newspaper verse, travel poetry, and plays. I place their compositions in an institutional chronicle defined by the “cultural company‐state,” the British East India Company, which patronized and censored Anglo- India's multilingual reading publics. In the process of arguing for Anglo‐Indian literature as a local and regional creation, I consider the how the terms British and anglophone should function in literary studies of colonialism organized not by hybridity or creolization but by geographic relations of distinction. The priority given to the development of research skills during doctrinal legal education often neglects the importance of equipping PhD students with the pedagogical skills necessary to fulfill their important educational role as academics. Thus, in many instances there is a significant gap in the requisite skill base that PhD students acquire when they complete their doctrinal education. This paper outlines a first step that has been taken to address this deficiency in postgraduate legal education in Ireland. The PhD community of the University College Dublin (UCD) School of Law convened an internal Syllabus Design Workshop in April 2010 in order to provide doctrinal students with an opportunity to design a university module and to explore the issues which arise in undertaking such an exercise. The first part of this paper outlines how the workshop was conceived and convened, and provides an account of the considerations that each student had to take into account in the design of a syllabus. From here, we address the content of the workshop and reflect upon some of the important issues which were raised. Finally, we offer a number of recommendations in relation to the development of doctrinal students as future educators. By highlighting the importance of uniting research and teaching, it is hoped that this paper will contribute to postgraduate legal education in Ireland, and also internationally.

We present a method for calculating the hydrodynamic interactions between particles in the kinetic (or transition regime), characterized by non-negligible particle Knudsen numbers. Such particles are often present in aerosol systems. The method is based on our extended Kirkwood–Riseman theory (Corson et al., Phys. Rev. E, vol. 95 (1), 2017c, 013103), which accounts for interactions between spheres using the velocity field around a translating sphere as a function of Knudsen number. Results for the two-sphere problem at small Knudsen numbers are in good agreement with those obtained using Felderhof’s interaction actions for mixed slip-stick boundary conditions, which are accurate to order $r^{-7}$ (Felderhof, Physica A, vol. 89 (2), 1977, pp. 373–384). The strength of the interactions decreases with increasing Knudsen number. Results for two fractal aggregates demonstrate that one can apply a point force approach for interactions between particles in the transition regime; the interaction tensor is similar to the Oseen tensor for continuum flow. Using this point force approach, we present an analysis for the settling of an unbounded cloud of particles. Our analysis shows that for sufficiently high volume fractions and cloud radii, the cloud behaves as a gas droplet in continuum flow even when the individual particles are small relative to the mean free path of the gas. The method presented here can be applied in a Brownian dynamics simulation analogous to Stokesian dynamics to study the behaviour of a dense aerosol system.

Milk was collected from three spring-calving herds, on different daily herbage allowances (DHA) of perennial rye-grass (16, 20 or 24 kg dry matter (DM)/cow for a 17 week period. On five occasions, at weekly intervals in the middle of the period, the three different milks were converted into low-moisture part-skim Mozzarella cheese. Increasing the DHA resulted in significant increases in the concentrations of protein in the cheesemilk (P<0·05) and cheese whey (P<0·02). The moisture-adjusted cheese yield increased significantly (P<0·01) on raising the DHA from 16 to 24 kg grass DM/cow. DHA had no significant effects on any of the gross compositional values of the cheese (although moisture and fat-in-DM levels tended to decrease and increase respectively with increasing DHA). The hardness of the uncooked cheese and functionality of cooked cheese (i.e. melt time, flowability, stretch and viscosity) were not significantly influenced by DHA over the 115 d ripening period at 4°C.
