Viking Age burial mounds are usually interpreted with reference to their exterior dimensions, the funerary treatment of the deceased and the artefacts placed within them. The process of constructing these mounds, however, may also have played an important role in funerary traditions. Investigations at the Gokstad mound in Norway demonstrate that the building of this mound—in terms of its phases and material expressions—formed an integral part of the overall burial rite. The complex construction sequence contained references to both the physical and mythical landscapes, revealing the potential of the study of burial mound construction at other sites in Viking Age Scandinavia and beyond.

The use of apotropaic practices, that is, of magic to protect against evil, is sometimes included in archaeological interpretations on the basis of similarities between archaeological objects and objects used in historically documented or present-day apotropaic practices. The present article attempts to develop the archaeological study of apotropaism by focussing on apotropaic ritual, in addition to apotropaic devices. The case study is a burial in ad 834 of a high-ranking Viking Age woman in the Norwegian Oseberg ship grave. Drawing on cognitive magic ritual theory, the study focuses on identifying both a repeated ritual core and a counter-intuitive, magic element in the series of actions that led to the deposition of five elaborately carved wooden animal heads in the burial, each combined with a rattling device probably related to horse driving. The study demonstrates that apotropaism provides a viable explanation for this rather puzzling aspect of the burial. In a wider perspective it emphasizes the importance of the contextual, in addition to the functional, interpretation of objects in graves. It also suggests that the use of animal figures and animal style in Viking Age artwork may have been more intimately connected with apotropaic beliefs than previously suggested.

An expected-utility model and a chance-constrained linear programming model were used to analyze four marketing strategies and seven crop insurance alternatives for cotton marketing in Georgia. The results suggest that existing marketing tools and insurance alternatives can be used to reduce cotton producers' revenue risk. The optimal level of yield and price insurance coverage depends on an individual producer's risk aversion.
The plundering of the ship graves from Oseberg and Gokstad: an example of power politics?

Not the least of the unusual revelations that have come from the wonderfully preserved ninth-century Norwegian ship burials at Oseberg and Gokstad, is the fact that both had been later broken into—by interlopers who defaced the ship, damaged the grave goods and pulled out and dispersed the bones of the deceased. These ‘mound-breakers’ helpfully left spades and stretchers in place, and through the application of some highly ingenious dendrochronology our authors have been able to date the break-ins with some precision. Mound-breaking, it seems, took place during the domination of Norway by Harald Bluetooth in the tenth century as part of an extensive campaign which included subduing local monuments as well as converting Scandinavians to Christianity. The old mounds retained such power in the landscape that it was worth desecrating them and disinterring their occupants a century after their burial.

Evidence suggests that frailer older patients benefit from a continuum of care rather than the admit/discharge model of our health system. This study examined patient outcomes after discharge from a geriatric day hospital (GDH) to determine what proportion continues to do well, what proportion declines, how the two groups differ, and if factors predictive of deterioration can be identified. Using telephone survey and Goal Attainment Scaling methodologies, the goals of 151 patients discharged from a GDH between 6 and 18 months previously were examined to determine whether GDH achievements were maintained or lost. All but 5 patients improved between GDH admission and discharge; after discharge, 39 per cent deteriorated. The need for more support in the community was predictive of deterioration, probably reflecting patient frailty. Number of medical diagnoses or medications were not predictive. Frailer older patients tend not to maintain goals achieved in a GDH after discharge and may benefit from ongoing maintenance.

Summary
AS for many other parts of Europe, the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries were for Denmark a time characterised by internal and external wars. Thanks to its geography, and to the geography of the North Sea and Baltic area in general, seafaring always held an important position in the economics and politics of the country. Ships were needed to tie together the various parts of the country and when wars were fought, naval operations were mandatory. At the same time, Denmark during the eleventh to fourteenth centuries, thanks to its fertile lands and short distances to large north European urban centres, became much more influenced by continental social, economic and political developments than the likewise markedly maritime Scandinavian countries Norway and Sweden. It is therefore of interest to know whether the Danish situation, combining a Scandinavian maritime society with continentally coloured economic and social development, led to the early creation of structures that might foretell the formation of permanent navies like those known from the sixteenth century on.
In investigating this question it has to be admitted that neither the archaeological nor the literary sources provide ample information on maritime warfare and we have to extrapolate from scarce source material when we want to discuss high medieval naval organisation in Denmark. It is possible to attack at least three questions concerning the general issue because of the existence of relevant sources.

We have been looking into the possibility to subtract out the continuum contribution in spectral line databases from the ungridded visibilities. It turns out that our simple method offers quite interesting possibilities in a lot of practical cases. In this contribution we show how and why this method works. Details of this work can be found in van Langevelde and Cotton (1990). We have tried to compare the results of this method with the mote conventional ways of subtracting the continuum. This comparison has to be done with simulations of which we show some results.
