The discovery of a unique organic deposit in a dry cave on the Colorado Plateau, southern Utah, permits the first comparison of the physical characteristics and the diet of the dung of the extinct mammoths from the arid Southwest, North America, with that of mammoths from Siberia and northern China, the only other known locations of such remains. The deposit buried beneath sand and rockfall is composed primarily of mammoth dung, estimated at over 300 m3. Radiocarbon dates on dung boluses indicate that the mammoths frequented the cave between approximately 14,700 and 11,000 yr B.P. (the range of ages at 2σ). The desiccated boluses, measuring approximately 230 × 170 × 85 mm, are nearly identical in size to dung from extant elephants. The largest contents in the dung are stalks measuring 60 × 4.5 mm. Grasses and sedges dominated the diet, although woody species were commonly eaten.

Burrows of the lysorophid amphibian Brachydectes elongatus occur in deposits interpreted as ephemeral ponds within the Lower Permian Speiser Shale of eastern Kansas. The burrows of B. elongatus have been previously recorded in the Lower Permian strata of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, but have not been described in detail and an ichnotaxonomic designation has not been provided. Torridorefugium eskridgensis new ichnogenus and ichnospecies show two types of burrow architecture distinguished by width-to-length ratios. Type I burrows are elongate, elliptical tubes 4–32 cm long and 2–7 cm wide. Type II burrows are short, elliptical tubes 1.5–3.5 cm long and 2.5–5 cm wide. Both Type I and II burrows may contain coiled skeletons of B. elongatus. Torridorefugium eskridgensis occur in clusters of up to 45 burrows with maximum concentrations of 20/m2.
The type specimens of Torridorefugium eskridgensis occur in a 40–cm-thick lens of calcareous mudstone that fills a 100–m-long paleodepression within a well-developed paleosol. The burrow clusters are capped by surfaces with evidence of subaerial exposure, and overlain by nonburrowed, massive mudstone containing the fossils of the charophyte Stomachara, the ostracodes Carbonita and Paraparchites, fish, amphibians, and reptiles. This succession suggests that lysorophids burrowed in response to episodic, perhaps seasonal, droughts on the Permian midcontinental coastal plain. Permian lysorophid burrowing behavior is analogous to that of the extant aestivating amphibians Amphiuma sp. and Siren intermedia that inhabit ephemeral rivers and ponds of the southeastern United States.

Leptarctus is a poorly known fossil carnivore that ranges through the Miocene of North America and Inner Mongolia, China (Lim, 1996; Zhai, 1964). Though it has been one of the least studied carnivores, more than 20 localities in North America have produced Leptarctus (Lim, 1999). The characters diagnosing Leptarctus as a mustelid include absence of M2, absence of a notch between the blades of the upper carnassial, and a reduced dentition with loss of PI and pi. Though Leptarctus is a mustelid, the teeth bear many similarities to those of procyonids, Procyon lotor and Nasua nasua and stand as a remarkable example of dental convergence (Leidy, 1856; Lim, 1999). Unlike other mustelids, Leptarctus has prominent double sagittal crests, heavy zygomatic arches, a prominent occipital crest, a well-developed hypocone on P4, labially curved upper canines, grooved lower canines, raccoon-like mandibles, elongated metatarsals, and unique bony projections on the tympanic bullae (Lim, 1999).

Summary
Introduction
Oil and fuel spills are among the most extensive and environmentally damaging pollution problems in cold regions and are recognized as potential threats to human and ecosystem health. It is generally thought that spills are more damaging in cold regions, and that ecosystem recovery is slower than in warmer climates (AMAP 1998; Det Norske Veritas 2003). Slow natural attenuation rates mean that petroleum concentrations remain high for many years, and site managers are therefore often forced to select among a range of more active remediation options, each of which involves a trade-off between cost and treatment time (Figure 11). The acceptable treatment timeline is usually dictated by financial circumstance, perceived risks, regulatory pressure, or transfer of land ownership.
In situations where remediation and site closure are not urgent, natural attenuation is often considered an option. However, for many cold region sites, contaminants rapidly migrate off-site (Gore et al. 1999; Snape et al. 2006a). In seasonally frozen ground, especially in wetlands, a pulse of contamination is often released with each summer thaw (AMAP 1998; Snape et al. 2002). In these circumstances natural attenuation is likely not a satisfactory option. Simply excavating contaminants and removing them for off-site treatment may not be viable either, because the costs are often prohibitive and the environmental consequences of bulk extraction can equal or exceed the damage caused by the initial spill (Filler et al. 2006; Riser-Roberts 1998).

Summary
The structure of the plant community has profound effects on rates of tooth wear in herbivorous mammals. Tooth abrasion results from three factors. The first, and in many cases the most important, is tooth-to-tooth wear. Functionally, tooth-to-tooth wear seems to produce and maintain sharp edges. The other two factors involve the abrasiveness of the diet. As a natural by-product of certain metabolic processes, plants precipitate opaline silica within their tissues as phytoliths (plant stones). During the life of a plant, phytoliths become progressively larger and more abundant in certain leaves and stems, but phytoliths are not as important components in plant reproductive parts or in the early growth of foliage (Piperno, 1988). If an animal eats mainly new growth, the abrasive effects of phytoliths on dentition can be largely avoided, but phytoliths can be significant contributors to tooth wear in species that concentrate on grazing (Piperno, 1988). More tooth wear results from the consumption of plant parts that are covered with dust (Janis, 1988), which naturally results when there are exposed land surfaces and is especially common in arid regions. In fact, the increase in seasonal aridity during the late Cenozoic may have been a major contributor to increased hypsodonty in Tertiary mammals. The abundance of dust on the surfaces of plants also depends on how close the plant parts are to the ground surface. Grasses not only incorporate large quantities of biogenic opal but also grow close to the surface, and hence grazing is an especially abrasive activity.

The 12 Mile Creek site in western Kansas was the first site yielding a fluted projectile point to be excavated in North America by scientific personnel. The Bison from this kill site were used in forming the original concept of B. occidentalis. A new study of the site including radiocarbon dates and a pollen analysis suggests the kill took place in a pine parkland about 10,300 years ago. The artifact from this site reported by Williston seems to be a Clovis projectile point.

Summary
Historical perspective
According to Fisher (1967), the first described avian paleospecies was Larus toliapicus (Konig 1825). Thus, the story of fossil birds barely exceeds 150 years, and the 100 years of the American Ornithologists' Union include nearly two-thirds of this. During most of this time, a major burden for paleornithologists has been a lack of comparative skeletons of recent birds. We are now beginning to solve this problem, and modern collections exist with thousands of skeletons covering about two-thirds of the world's species.
The other major problem is the incompleteness of most avian fossils. Fragmentary materials rarely contribute to improving avian systematics and thus limit the impact of paleornithology. The few studies that have used excellent specimens (Marsh 1880; Wellnhofer 1974; Harrison and Walker 1976a; Martin and Tate 1976; Olson 1977), illustrate how much more convincing conclusions are when based on more than one skeletal element. Such studies are possible for less than 10% of the total fossil record of birds, and studies of distribution, both geographic and temporal, must rely on less complete specimens.
Fisher (1967) summarized the distribution of fossil birds and estimated the early avian diversification. Shufeldt and Lambrecht were among the first to estimate the diversity of past avifaunas. Shufeldt realized knowing the osteology of Recent birds was fundamental to understanding fossil ones, and he made numerous osteological contributions (Shufeldt 1909).
