Objective:
Code-switching is when bilingual individuals alternate between two languages in the same conversation. Some studies find that code-switching frequency is associated with executive functioning, while others do not. Individual attitudes towards bilingual language use and code-switching may explain the inconsistency in the literature. For instance, greater positive attitudes towards code-switching may be associated with more likelihood to engage in that practice and thus strengthen the cognitive benefit in executive function. Additionally, code-switching between English and Spanish has been stigmatized in the U.S., therefore it is unclear what sociocultural factors may predict positive attitudes. In this study, we assessed Latinx bilinguals’ attitudes on code-switching and investigated their relationship with code-switching frequency, sociodemographic and linguistic factors, and executive functioning.
Participants and Methods:Participants were 525 community-dwelling English-Spanish bilingual Latinx adults from the Offspring study (Mage= 55.38 (10.42); Meducation= 12.62 (3.34); 71% women; 41% tested in English, 75% immigrant). A language history questionnaire assessed for bilingualism and code-switching frequency. Participants completed 7 questions on code-switching attitudes on a 7-point Likert scale ranging from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree (e.g., “switching between languages in a conversation is an important part of my identity”), that were summed for a total score with higher scores indicating more positive attitudes. Executive functioning was assessed with the NIH Toolbox Cognition battery, verbal fluencies, and the digit span test. Sociodemographic and linguistic factors included age, sex, education, immigrant status, parental years of education, English and Spanish proficiency (average score on self-reported ratings on speaking, reading, writing, and understanding), and testing language. General linear models evaluated the association of code-switching attitudes on executive function, after adjusting for relevant covariates.
Results:Positive code-switching attitudes were correlated with greater code-switching, r(499)=.33, p<.001. Younger age r(499)=-.11, being born in the US t(493)=-2.05, greater English proficiency r(497)=.15, and English dominance t(499)=2.22, were associated with more positive code-switching attitudes (all p’s <.05). Sex, education, parental years of education, and Spanish proficiency were not associated with code-switching attitudes. Overall models of attitudes with executive function indicated that positive code-switching attitudes were associated with worse visual working memory (b = -0.08, t(169) = -2.75, 95% CI [0.14, -0.02]) after adjusting for age, sex, education, immigration status, parental years of education and testing language. Code-switching attitudes were not significantly associated with other executive function measures.
Conclusions:Among a community-based sample of bilingual middle-aged Latinx adults, positive attitudes towards code-switching were associated with greater likelihood of code-switching in conversations, higher English proficiency, being US born, younger age, and English language dominance but negatively associated with visual working memory. These findings indicate that code-switching attitudes are influenced by sociodemographic and linguistic factors. Additionally, the negative association between code-switching attitudes and visual working memory provides support for previous studies showing code-switching as a disadvantage to cognition. Results of this study suggest that detailed characterization of sociocultural factors and aspects of bilingualism can provide further clarity in determining if there is a potential bilingual cognitive advantage. Future research should examine the relationship of code-switching with other aspects of bilingualism (e.g., age of acquisition).
5 Association of Discrimination to Cognition Among US-Born and Immigrant Latinx

Objective:
Neuropsychology is in a nascent stage of understanding the mechanisms that link social forces, psychosocial experiences, and brain health. Discrimination is associated with lower quality of life, higher stress, and worse physical health outcomes in Latinx, but contradictory findings in prior research complicate our understanding of its relationship to cognition. These contradictory results may be explained by heterogeneity within the broad category of Latinx, a cultural identity that requires more nuanced conceptualization. Immigration status is a primary social identifier for Latinx people that carries significant stigma. However, prior research found enculturation promotes better physical and mental health outcomes in immigrants compared to their US-born counterparts, which may protect immigrant Latinx from the cognitive costs of discrimination. The current study hypothesized that the effect of discrimination on cognition will be stronger in US-born Latinx compared to immigrant Latinx.
Participants and Methods:We partnered with 1,023 neurologically healthy, community dwelling Latinx adults (M age=56.1(±10.7); M education=12.5(±3.7); 69% women) in a prospective cohort study in NYC investigating risks factors for Alzheimer’s disease. Immigration status was determined by self-report of birthplace. Measures of attention, language, and memory were administered by bilingual examiners in the participants’ self-selected preferred language of English (n = 388) or Spanish (n=635). Discrimination, measured with the Everyday Discrimination Scale and Major Experiences of Discrimination Scale, was chronicity coded to weigh experiences of discrimination according to yearly chronicity. Linear regression models were employed for US-born and immigrant participants to assess the relationship between both discrimination measures and each cognitive measure.
Results:Compared to US-born Latinx (n = 224), immigrant Latinx (n = 799; primarily from the Dominican Republic) were older, had fewer years of school, had lower income, and were much more likely to have chosen to be assessed in Spanish. Immigrants reported experiencing significantly fewer everyday and major experiences of discrimination than nonimmigrants. In unadjusted models, discrimination did not predict cognitive performance among US-born Latinx. Among immigrant Latinx, more major experiences of discrimination across the lifetime predicted better phonemic (F(2,362) = 4.167, p<0.05, R2=0.017) and semantic fluency (F(2,362) = 3.304, p<0.05, R2=0.013) but was not associated with measures of attention or memory.
Conclusions:Discrimination is an important life stressor for Latinx people living in the US, particularly when its impact is summed across intersectional identities. The current study is among the first to explore the potential cognitive impact of discrimination within a group of Latinx adults. The described relationship between discrimination and language performance in this cohort may be confounded by the language in which cognitive tests were administered. Future studies should consider how discrimination measures may be limited in their ability to accurately capture the experiences of US-born and immigrant Latinx groups and expand the measurement of cognition to additional domains.
Mandatory reporting legislation in Canada: improving systems for patient safety?

Patient safety is a complex systems issue. In this study, we used a scoping review of peer-reviewed literature and a case study of provincial and territorial legislation in Canada to explore the influence of mandatory reporting legislation on patient safety outcomes in hospital settings. We drew from a conceptual model that examines the components of mandatory reporting legislation that must be in place as a part of a systems governance approach to patient safety and used this model to frame our results. Our results suggest that mandatory reporting legislation across Canada is generally designed to gather information about – rather than respond to and prevent – patient safety incidents. Overall, we found limited evidence of impact of mandatory reporting legislation on patient safety outcomes. Although legislation is one lever among many to improve patient safety outcomes, there are nonetheless several considerations for patient safety legislation to assist in broader system improvement efforts in Canada and elsewhere. Legislative frameworks may be enhanced by strengthening learning systems, accountability mechanisms and patient safety culture.
Development of a novel 3D immersive visualisation tool for manual image matching

Aim:
The novel Volumetric Image Matching Environment for Radiotherapy (VIMER) was developed to allow users to view both computed tomography (CT) and cone-beam CT (CBCT) datasets within the same 3D model in virtual reality (VR) space. Stereoscopic visualisation of both datasets combined with custom slicing tools and complete freedom in motion enables alternative inspection and matching of the datasets for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT).
Material and methods:A qualitative study was conducted to explore the challenges and benefits of VIMER with respect to image registration. Following training and use of the software, an interview session was conducted with a sample group of six university staff members with clinical experience in image matching.
Results:User discomfort and frustration stemmed from unfamiliarity with the drastically different input tools and matching interface. As the primary advantage, the users reported match inspection efficiency when presented with the 3D volumetric renderings of the planning and secondary CBCT datasets.
Findings:This study provided initial evidence for the achievable benefits and limitations to consider when implementing a 3D voxel-based dataset comparison VR tool including a need for extensive training and the minimal interruption to IGRT workflow. Key advantages include efficient 3D anatomical interpretation and the capability for volumetric matching.

Oregon's Fort Rock Cave is iconic in respect to both the archaeology of the northern Great Basin and the history of debate about when the Great Basin was colonized. In 1938, Luther Cressman recovered dozens of sagebrush bark sandals from beneath Mt. Mazama ash that were later radiocarbon dated to between 10,500 and 9350 cal B.P. In 1970, Stephen Bedwell reported finding lithic tools associated with a date of more than 15,000 cal B.P., a date dismissed as unreasonably old by most researchers. Now, with evidence of a nearly 15,000-year-old occupation at the nearby Paisley Five Mile Point Caves, we returned to Fort Rock Cave to evaluate the validity of Bedwell's claim, assess the stratigraphic integrity of remaining deposits, and determine the potential for future work at the site. Here, we report the results of additional fieldwork at Fort Rock Cave undertaken in 2015 and 2016, which supports the early Holocene occupation, but does not confirm a pre–10,500 cal B.P. human presence.

Since the mid-19th century, western Oregon's Willamette Valley has been a source of remains from a wide variety of extinct megafauna. Few of these have been previously described or dated, but new chronologic and isotopic analyses in conjunction with updated evaluations of stratigraphic context provide substantial new information on the species present, timing of losses, and paleoenvironmental conditions. Using subfossil material from the northern valley, we use AMS radiocarbon dating, stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) analyses, and taxonomic dietary specialization and habitat preferences to reconstruct environments and to develop a local chronology of events that we then compare with continental and regional archaeological and paleoenvironmental data. Analysis of twelve bone specimens demonstrates the presence of bison, mammoth, horse, sloth, and mastodon from ~ 15,000–13,000 cal yr BP. The latest ages coincide with changing regional climate corresponding to the onset of the Younger Dryas. It is suggested that cooling conditions led to increased forest cover, and along with river aggradation, reduced the area of preferred habitat for the larger bodied herbivores, which contributed to the demise of local megafauna. Archaeological evidence for megafauna–human interactions in the Pacific Northwest is scarce, limiting our ability to address the human role in causing extinction.
Relationship Between Depressive Symptoms and Cognition in Older, Non-demented African Americans

Knowledge of the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognition in older adults has primarily come from studies of clinically depressed, functionally impaired or cognitively impaired individuals, and in predominately White samples. Limited minority representation in depression research exposes the need to examine these associations in more ethnic/racially diverse populations. We sought to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognition in a sample of non-demented older African Americans recruited from surrounding U.S. cities of New York, Greensboro, Miami, and Nashville (N=944). Depressive symptoms were evaluated with the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Cognition was evaluated with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Test scores were summarized into attention, executive function, memory, language, and processing speed composites. Controlling for age, education, reading level, and sex, African American older adults who endorsed more symptoms obtained significantly lower scores on measures of memory, language, processing speed, and executive functioning. Further investigation of the causal pathway underlying this association, as well as potential mediators of the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive test performance among older African Americans, such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, may offer potential avenues for intervention. Effects of Stereotype Threat, Perceived Discrimination, and Examiner Race on Neuropsychological Performance: Simple as Black and White?

The purpose of the current study was to examine the predictive roles of stereotype threat and perceived discrimination and the mediating role of examiner-examinee racial discordance on neuropsychological performance in a non-clinical sample of African American and Caucasian individuals. Ninety-two African American (n = 45) and Caucasian (n = 47) adults were randomly assigned to either a stereotype threat or non-threat condition. Within each condition, participants were randomly assigned to either a same race or different race examiner. All participants underwent neuropsychological testing and completed a measure of perceived discrimination. African Americans in the stereotype threat condition performed significantly worse on global NP (Mz = −.30, 95% confidence interval [CI] [−0.07, −0.67] than African Americans in the non-threat condition (Mz = 0.09, CI [0.15, 0.33]. African Americans who reported high levels of perceived discrimination performed significantly worse on memory tests when tested by an examiner of a different race, Mz = −1.19, 95% CI [−1.78, −.54], than African Americans who were tested by an examiner of the same race, Mz = 0.24, 95% CI [−0.24, 0.72]. The current study underscores the importance of considering the role of contextual variables in neuropsychological performance, as these variables may obscure the validity of results among certain racial/ethnic groups. Efforts to demonstrate the feasibility of a gamma-ray laser scored major advances in 1987. Culminating with the successes in optically pumping the first of the 29 actual candidate isomers, priority issues were brought into better focus by the lessons learned from a wealth of new results. Perceptions were advanced so greatly that we must reassess the critical issues for 1988. Only the bottom line remains the same. A gamma-ray laser is feasible if the right combination of energy levels occurs in some real material. The likelihood of this favorable arrangement has been markedly increased by the experimental results to date.

Affordable, high quality SiC wafers are very desirable for a variety of new technologies including GaN based lighting, RF, and high-power electronics based on wide band gap materials. At Litton Airtron we have a major effort in the growth and characterization of SiC. We will present data on 35, 50 and 75-mm diameter crystals. We are growing both n-type, semiinsulating 4H, 6H, and 15R material. A variety of characterization techniques are being used at Litton Airtron to determine wafer quality. These include Raman microscopy, digital wafer photography, and crossed polarizer images. Raman spectroscopy is an excellent probe of polytype and carrier concentration for n-type materials; in addition it can be done at room temperature and is sufficiently fast that it can be used in an industrial environment. The use of digital photography allows for the collection of images that can be quantitatively analyzed and archived.

We have obtained new optical spectra of the radio galaxy 3C 129 and the giant galaxy close to it. From these spectra we deduce a relative radial velocity of 710 km s−1 between the two galaxies. Using the orbit calculations of Byrd & Valtonen (1978) and the new observations we obtain a new value, 3.3 × 1014M⊙, for the mass of the system.

Observations that polyribosomes are localized near dendritic spines and beneath synapses has led to a hypothesis of synapse-specific gene expression in which local synthesis would provide a mechanism to influence synaptic structure and strength (l).The active transport of specific mRNAs into dendrites and spines may be a regulated mechanism to target synaptic and regulatory proteins to postsynaptic locations and influence synaptic activity. RNA granules labeled with the vital dye, SYT014, were observed to localize into developing neurites in response to the neurotrophin, NT-3 (2). Neurotrophins have been shown to enhance synaptic activity by a process which requires new protein synthesis (3). The identity and source of newly synthesized proteins which are required to enhance synaptic strength in response to NT-3 are unknown. CaMKIIαRNA localization into dendrites has been shown to occur during long term potentiation (4).

Monilinia fructigena secretes one molecular form of endo-polygalacturonase (PG) in apple fruits infected by it. This PG, purified from culture filtrate to homogeneity, had an Mr of ca 33000 (SDS electrophoresis) and a pI value of ca 9·75. It had little or no effect on the structural integrity of potato tuber tissues, nor on the viability of apple callus cells in suspension. Modification of the lysine units of the purified enzyme by pyridoxal phosphate resulted in ca 50% decrease in PG activity. PG thus modified appeared to bind to an apple fibre preparation less than did PG not treated with pyridoxal phosphate. Lysine residues may thus be involved in subsites binding this PG to carboxyl groups in the polygalacturonate.
