A new mineral species, guangyuanite, ideally Pb3Cl3(Se4+O3)(OH), was discovered from the El Dragón mine, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosí Department, Bolivia. It occurs as equant crystals. Associated minerals are Co-bearing krut'aite–penroseite, chalcomenite, schmiederite, olsacherite, phosgenite, anglesite, cerussite and franksousaite. Guangyuanite is pale yellow–brown in transmitted light, transparent with white streak and vitreous lustre. It is brittle and has a Mohs hardness of ~3. No parting or cleavage was observed. The calculated density is 7.63 g/cm3. An electron microprobe analysis yielded an empirical formula [based on 7 (O + Cl) atoms per formula unit] of Pb3.02Cl3.01(Se4+0.99O3)(OH), which can be simplified to Pb3Cl3(Se4+O3)(OH).

Guangyuanite is isostructural with synthetic Pb3Br3(Se4+O3)(OH). It is orthorhombic, with space group Pnma and unit-cell parameters a = 11.0003(5), b = 10.6460(5), c = 7.7902 Å, V = 912.31(6) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal structure of guangyuanite contains two symmetrically-distinct Pb (Pb1 and Pb2) cations, with Pb1 coordinated by eight anions (4O + 4Cl) and Pb2 only by six anions (3O + 3Cl), forming a marked lopsided coordination typical of Pb2+ with a stereochemically active 6s2 lone electron pair. The Se4+ cation forms a typical [Se4+O3] trigonal pyramid. The crystal structure of guangyuanite can be described as consisting of layers of edge-sharing [Pb1O4Cl4] polyhedra parallel to (100). These layers are linked together by sharing polyhedral corners (Cl atoms), as well as [Pb2O3Cl3] and [Se4+O3] groups. Chemically, guangyuanite is one of six lead chloride selenite minerals reported thus far and closely related to orlandiite Pb3Cl4(Se4+O3)⋅H2O.

A new mineral species, mikenewite (IMA2022-102), ideally Mn2+(S4+O3)⋅3H2O, has been discovered from the San Judas Chimney, Ojuela mine, Mapimí, Durango, Mexico. It occurs as spheres of platy crystals. Associated minerals include goethite, cryptomelane, adamite and lotharmeyerite. Mikenewite is yellowish in transmitted light, transparent with a white streak and vitreous lustre. It is brittle and has a Mohs hardness of 2½–3. Cleavage is perfect on {101}. The measured and calculated densities are 2.48(5) and 2.467 g/cm3, respectively. Optically, mikenewite is biaxial (+), with α = 1.606(5), β = 1.614(5), γ = 1.627(1) (white light), 2V(meas.) = 69(3)° and 2V(calc.) = 77°. An electron microprobe analysis yielded an empirical formula (based on 6 O apfu) of (Mn0.86Zn0.12Fe0.04Ca0.02)Σ1.04(S0.98O3)⋅3H2O, which can be simplified to (Mn,Zn,Fe)(SO3)⋅3H2O.

Mikenewite is the natural analogue of synthetic α-Mn2+(S4+O3)⋅3H2O, as well as the Mn-analogue of albertiniite, Fe2+(S4+O3)⋅3H2O. It is monoclinic, with space group P21/n and unit-cell parameters a = 6.6390(3), b = 8.8895(4), c = 8.7900(4) Å, β = 96.095(2)°, V = 515.83(4) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal structure of mikenewite is characterised by each Mn atom coordinated octahedrally by six O atoms, three from different sulfite O atoms and three from H2O molecules. Each S4+O3 group is bonded to three Mn atoms, resulting in a sheet parallel to (101) with the sheet composition of Mn2+(S4+O3)⋅3H2O. Such sheets, stacked along [10$\bar{1}$], are joined together by hydrogen bonds, accounting for the perfect cleavage of the mineral. Mikenewite is dimorphous with orthorhombic Pnma gravegliaite, as albertiniite is with fleisstalite. Its discovery from the Ojuela mine, which is particularly rich in Zn, implies the possibility of finding Zn-bearing sulfites there as well.

A new mineral species, bernardevansite (IMA2022-057), ideally Al2(Se4+O3)3⋅6H2O, has been discovered from the El Dragón mine, Potosí Department, Bolivia. It occurs as aggregates or spheres of radiating bladed crystals on a matrix consisting of Co-bearing krut'aite–penroseite. Associated minerals are Co-bearing krut'aite–penroseite, chalcomenite and ‘clinochalcomenite’. Bernardevansite is colourless in transmitted light, transparent with white streak and vitreous lustre. It is brittle and has a Mohs hardness of 2½–3. Cleavage is not observed. The measured and calculated densities are 2.93(5) and 2.997 g/cm3, respectively. Optically, bernardevansite is biaxial (+), with α = 1.642(5), β = 1.686(5) and γ = 1.74(1) (white light). An electron microprobe analysis yielded an empirical formula (based on 15 O apfu) (Al1.26Fe3+0.82)Σ2.08(Se0.98O3)3⋅6H2O, which can be simplified to (Al,Fe3+)2(SeO3)3⋅6H2O.

Bernardevansite is the Al-analogue of mandarinoite, Fe3+2(SeO3)3⋅6H2O or dimorphous with P$\bar{6}$2c alfredopetrovite. It is monoclinic, with space group P21/c and unit-cell parameters a = 16.5016(5), b = 7.7703(2), c = 9.8524(3) Å, β = 98.258(3)°, V = 1250.21(6) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal structure of bernardevansite consists of a corner-sharing framework of M3+O6 (M = Al and Fe) octahedra and Se4+O3 trigonal pyramids, leaving large voids occupied by the H2O groups. There are two unique M3+ positions: M1 is octahedrally coordinated by (4O + 2H2O) and M2 by (5O + H2O). The structure refinement indicates that Al preferentially occupies M1 (= 0.692Al + 0.308Fe) over M2 (= 0.516Al + 0.484Fe). The substitution of the majority of Fe in mandarinoite by Al results in a significant reduction in its unit-cell volume from 1313.4 Å3 to 1250.21(6) Å3 for bernardevansite. The discovery of bernardevansite begs the question whether the Fe3+ end-member, Fe3+2(SeO3)3⋅6H2O, has two polymorphs as well, one with P21/c symmetry, as for mandarinoite and the other P$\bar{6}$2c, as for alfredopetrovite.

A new beryllophosphate mineral species, loomisite (IMA2022-003), ideally Ba[Be2P2O8]⋅H2O, was found from the Big Chief mine near Keystone, Pennington County, South Dakota, USA. It occurs as divergent sprays of very thin bladed crystals with a tapered termination. Individual crystals are found up to 0.80 × 0.06 × 0.03 mm. Associated minerals include dondoellite, earlshannonite, mitridatite, rockbridgeite, jahnsite-(CaMnFe) and quartz. No twinning or parting is observed macroscopically. Loomisite is murky white in transmitted light, transparent with white streak and silky to vitreous lustre. It is brittle and has a Mohs hardness of 3½–4, with perfect cleavage on {100} and {$\bar{1}$10}. The measured and calculated densities are 3.46(5) and 3.512 g/cm3, respectively. Optically, loomisite is biaxial (+), with α = 1.579(5), β = 1.591(5), γ = 1.606(5) (white light), 2V (meas.) = 82(2)° and 2V (calc.) = 85°. It is non-pleochroic under polarised light, with a very weak (r > v) dispersion. The mineral is insoluble in water or hydrochloric acid. An electron microprobe analysis, along with the BeO content measured with an ICP-MS, yields an empirical formula (based on 9 O apfu) (Ba0.96Ca0.06)Σ1.02[(Be1.96Fe0.06)Σ2.02P1.99O8]⋅H2O, which can be simplified to (Ba,Ca)[(Be,Fe)2P2O8]⋅H2O.

Loomisite is monoclinic, with space group Pn and unit-cell parameters a = 7.6292(18), b = 9.429(2), c = 4.7621(11) Å, β = 91.272(5)°, V= 342.47(14) Å3 and Z = 2. Its crystal structure is characterised by a framework of corner-sharing PO4 and BeO4 tetrahedra. The framework can be considered as built from the stacking of sheets consisting of 4- and 8-membered rings (4.82 nets) along [001] or hexagonal layers (63 nets) along [010]. The extra-framework Ba2+ and H2O are situated in the channels formed by the 8-membered rings. Topologically, loomisite represents the first natural example with the zeolite ABW-type framework, which is adopted by over 100 synthetic compounds with different chemical compositions.

A new mineral species, franksousaite (IMA2021-096), ideally PbCu(Se6+O4)(OH)2, has been found from the El Dragón mine, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosí Department, Bolivia. It occurs as short prismatic crystals included in colourless anglesite. Associated minerals are Co-bearing krut'aite–penroseite, chalcomenite, schmiederite, olsacherite, phosgenite, anglesite and cerussite. Franksousaite is blue in transmitted light, transparent with very pale blue streak and has a vitreous lustre. It is brittle and has a Mohs hardness of 2–2½. Cleavage is perfect on {100}. The calculated density is 5.64 g/cm3. An electron microprobe analysis yielded an empirical formula (based on 6 O apfu) of Pb1.02Cu0.98[(Se0.84S0.17)Σ1.01O4)](OH)2, which is simplified to PbCu[(Se,S)O4)](OH)2.

Franksousaite is the Se6+ analogue of linarite, PbCu(SO4)(OH)2. It is monoclinic, with space group P21/m and unit-cell parameters a = 9.8208(3), b = 5.7340(2), c = 4.74980(10) Å, β = 102.683(2)°, V = 260.947(13) Å3 and Z = 2. The crystal structure of franksousaite consists of Jahn-Teller-distorted Cu2+O6 square bipyramids, which form chains along b by sharing trans edges across their square planes. The chains are decorated by SeO4 tetrahedra and linked to one another by hydrogen bonds to form layers parallel to (100). These layers are bound together by double layers of PbO8 and SeO4 polyhedra. The PbO8 polyhedron exhibits one-sided coordination typical of Pb2+ with a stereochemically active 6s2 lone-electron-pair. The major structural difference between franksousaite and linarite lies in the <Se–O> vs. <S–O> bond distances (1.615 vs. 1.482 Å), accounting for the larger unit-cell volume for franksousaite. A comparison of Raman spectra for the four minerals in the linarite group (linarite, franksousaite, munakataite and schmiederite) reveals the obvious differences among them, especially in the range from 700 to 1000 cm–1, indicative of the presence or absence of (Se4+O3)2–, (Se6+O4)2–, and/or (SO4)2– groups.

Ferrofettelite, ideally [Ag6As2S7][Ag10FeAs2S8], is a new mineral (IMA2021-094) from the Glasberg quarry, Nieder-Beerbach, Odenwald, south-western Germany. It occurs as anhedral to subhedral flakes and grains up to 80 μm, associated with proustite and xanthoconite, on arsenolite, calcite and prehnite. Ferrofettelite is opaque with a metallic lustre and possesses a dark reddish-grey streak. It is brittle with an uneven fracture; the Vickers microhardness (VHN20) is 122 kg/mm2 (range 111–131). The calculated density is 5.74 g/cm3 (on the basis of the empirical formula). In plane-polarised reflected light, ferrofettelite is greyish white. Between crossed polars it is weakly anisotropic with red internal reflections. Electron-microprobe analyses give the chemical formula Ag16.04(Fe0.55Hg0.40Cu0.02)Σ0.97(As3.94Sb0.03)Σ3.97S15.02 on the basis of total atoms = 36.

Ferrofettelite is monoclinic, space group C2, with a = 26.011(2), b = 15.048(1), c = 15.513(1) Å, β = 90.40(1)° and V = 6071.9(7) Å3 for Z = 8. The six strongest Bragg peaks in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern (d, Å (I, %) (hkl) are: 3.18 (50) ($\bar{8}$01), 3.104 (100) (005), 3.004 (60) ($\bar{8}$02), 2.755 (40) ($\bar{4}$43), 2.501 (30) ($\bar{4}$44) and 1.880 (30) ($\overline {12}$40). The crystal structure can be described as the alternation of two kinds of layers along the c-axis: layer A with general composition [Ag6As2S7]2– and layer B with a general composition of [Ag10FeAs2S8]2+. In the structure, the Ag atoms adopt various coordinations extending from quasi linear to quasi tetrahedral, the AsS3 groups form pyramids as are typically observed in sulfosalts, and mixed (Fe,Hg) links two sulfur atoms in a linear coordination. Ferrofettelite is the first reported inorganic phase showing a linear coordination for Fe2+. The high-temperature behaviour of ferrofettelite was studied up to 410 K and compared to that of fettelite.

A new phyllosilicate mineral, lipuite (IMA2014-085), has been discovered from the N'Chwaning III mine, Kalahari Manganese Fields, Northern Cape Province, Republic of South Africa. It occurs as platy, tabular, or granular crystals and veined agglomerate in association with Mn-bearing sugilite, taniajacoite, pectolite, richterite, norrishite and namansilite. Lipuite is dark red–brown with vitreous lustre, red streak, an estimated Mohs hardness of 5 and the measured density is 2.83(3) g/cm3. It is biaxial (+) and characterised by bright red to dark red colour in thin section with measured refractive indices in white light: α = 1.635(1), β = 1.653(1), γ = 1.670(1) and 2V = 86(2)°. The Raman spectra of lipuite are composed of over 21 bands at 109, 146, 162, 183, 206, 244, 288, 342, 362, 455, 496, 520, 552, 613, 669, 886, 930, 971, 1097, 3487 and 3540 cm–1. The empirical formula from microprobe analyses is (based on total number of cations = 27.5 and structural refinement): K1.12Na8.16(Mn4.77Fe0.07)Σ4.84Mg0.44[Si11.97O30(OH)4](PO4)0.94O2(OH)2·4H2O. The idealised formula is: KNa8Mn3+5Mg0.5[Si12O30(OH)4](PO4)O2(OH)2·4H2O.

Lipuite is orthorhombic, space group Pnnm, a = 9.080(3), b = 12.222(3), c = 17.093(5) Å, V = 1897.0(9) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest powder X-ray diffraction peaks [d, Å (I) (hkl)] are: 9.965(40)(011), 2.938(33)(310), 2.895(100)(311), 2.777(38)(224), 2.713(53)(320), 2.483(32)(126), 2.086(35)(046) and 1.534(40)(446). The crystal structure of lipuite is characterised by sheets of SiO4 tetrahedra that are linked together along [010] by K+, Na+, Mn3+, Mg2+ and P5+ cations, as well as hydrogen bonds. These tetrahedral sheets consist of 14-membered rings of SiO4 tetrahedra that zigzag along [100]. The two independent Mn3+ cations are both octahedrally coordinated. They form five-membered, edge-shared octahedral clusters between the SiO4 tetrahedral sheets. Lipuite represents a rather unique structure type and its silicate tetrahedral sheets can be considered a derivative of the silicate sheets in mica.

A new mineral species, fluorlamprophyllite (IMA2013-102), ideally Na3(SrNa)Ti3(Si2O7)2O2F2, has been found in the Poços de Caldas alkaline massif, Morro do Serrote, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Alternatively, the idealized chemical formula could be written as (SrNa)[(Na3Ti)F2][Ti2(Si2O7)2O2], setting the large interlayer cations before the cations of the layer. Fluorlamprophyllite is the F-analogue of lamprophyllite. It is associated with aegirine, analcime, natrolite, nepheline and microcline. Fluorlamprophyllite crystals are brownish-orange and bladed. The mineral is transparent with a pale yellow streak and an adamantine lustre. It is brittle and has a Mohs hardness of ~3; cleavage is perfect on {100} and no parting was observed. The calculated density is 3.484 g/cm3. Optically, fluorlamprophyllite is biaxial (+), with α = 1.735(7), β = 1.749(7) and γ = 1.775(9) and 2Vmeas = 72(3)°. An electron microprobe analysis produced an average composition (wt.%) (9 points) of Na2O 10.63(30), K2O 0.47(3), SiO2 30.51(13), SrO 18.30(24), MgO 0.81(17), Al2O3 0.23(2), CaO 1.11(7), MnO 5.03(38), TiO2 27.41(87), Fe2O3 2.45(37), F 2.86(23), plus H2O 1.00 (added to bring the total close to 100%), –O = F –1.20, with the total = 98.61%. The elements Nb and Ba were sought, but contents were below microprobe detection limits. The resultant chemical formula was calculated on the basis of 18 (O + F) atoms per formula unit. The addition of 1.00 wt.% H2O brought [F+(OH)] = 2 pfu, yielding (Na2.63Sr1.35Mn0.54Ca0.15Mg0.15K0.08)Σ4.90(Ti2.63Fe0.24Al0.04)Σ2.91Si3.89O16[F1.15(OH)0.85]Σ2.00. The mineral is monoclinic, with space group C2/m and unit-cell parameters a = 19.255(2), b = 7.0715(7), c = 5.3807(6) Å, β = 96.794(2)° and V = 727.5(1) Å3. The structure is a layered silicate inasmuch as the O atoms are arranged in well-defined, though not necessarily close-packed layers.

Parisite-(La) (IMA2016-031), ideally CaLa2(CO3)3F2, occurs in a hydrothermal vein crosscutting a metarhyolite of the Rio dos Remédios Group, at the Mula mine, Tapera village, Novo Horizonte county, Bahia, Brazil, associated with hematite, rutile, almeidaite, fluocerite-(Ce), brockite, monazite-(La), rhabdophane-(La) and bastnäsite-(La). Parisite-(La) occurs as residual nuclei (up to 5 mm) in steep doubly-terminated pseudo-hexagonal pyramidal crystals (up to 8.2 cm). Parisite-(La) is transparent, yellow-green to white, with a white streak and displays a vitreous (when yellow-green) to dull (when white) lustre. Cleavage is distinct on pseudo-{001}; fracture is laminated, conchoidal, or uneven. The Mohs hardness is 4 to 5, and it is brittle. Calculated density is 4.273 g cm−3. Parisite-(La) is pseudo-uniaxial (+), ω = 1.670(2) and ε = 1.782(5) (589 nm). The empirical formula normalized on the basis of 11 (O + F) atoms per formula unit (apfu) is Ca0.98(La0.83Nd0.51Ce0.37Pr0.16Sm0.04Y0.03)Σ1.94C3.03O8.91F2.09. The IR spectrum confirms the absence of OH groups. Single-crystal X-ray studies gave the following results: monoclinic (pseudo-trigonal), space group: C2, Cm, or C2/m, a = 12.356(1) Å, b = 7.1368(7) Å, c = 28.299(3) Å, β = 98.342(4)°, V = 2469.1(4) Å3 and Z = 12. Parisite-(La) is the La-dominant analogue of parisite-(Ce).

Marshallsussmanite (IMA2013-067) is a new pyroxenoid mineral from the Wessels mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Marshallsussmanite has ideal formula NaCaMnSi3O8(OH) and triclinic P$\bar{1}$ symmetry. Marshallsussmanite forms vitreous pink bladed crystals to 2.1 cm. The mineral shows perfect cleavage on both {100} and {001}. The chemical composition from electron microprobe (average of 20 analyses) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer analysis (average of three analyses) is Li2O 0.43, Na2O 8.06, MgO 0.08, CaO 15.33, MnO 21.79, SiO2 51.71; totalling 97.40 wt.%. The empirical formula, normalized to 3 Si and assuming 1 H apfu is Li0.100Na0.906Ca0.953Mg0.007Mn1.071Si3O8(OH). Unit-cell parameters from single crystal X-ray diffraction are a = 7.7854(4), b = 6.9374(4), c = 6.8516(3) Å, α = 90.683(3)°, β = 94.330(3)°, γ = 102.856(3)°, V = 359.59(3) Å3; Z = 2. The crystal structure refinement converged with Robs = 0.0248 and site occupancy refinement gives crystal chemistry [Na0.948Li0.052][Ca0.793Mn0.207] [Mn0.937Ca0.063]Si3O8(OH). Marshallsussmanite is a single chain silicate with a repeat interval of three tetrahedra (i.e. dreier chain). Marshallsussmanite is a member of the pectolite group of pyroxenoids, which also includes barrydawsonite-(Y), cascandite, pectolite, serandite and tanohataite. Parallel silicate chains form layers, intercalated with well-ordered cation layers. Calcium and Mn both exhibit octahedral coordination, while Na has four bonded interactions in a coordination sphere (radius 3 Å) of seven separate O atoms. Procrystal electron density and bond valence modelling results are compared. The mineral has an unusually strong hydrogen bond with O4⋅⋅⋅O3 separation of 2.458(2) Å. Unlike pectolite and serandite, O4 in marshallsussmanite acts as an H-bond donor and O3 is an H-bond acceptor. Cation ordering in pyroxenoids has a substantial impact on the H position and corresponding H-bonding schemata.

Natropalermoite, ideally Na2SrAl4(PO4)4(OH)4, the Na-analogue of palermoite, is a new mineral from the Palermo No. 1 mine, Groton, New Hampshire, USA. Associated minerals are palermoite, eosphorite and quartz. Natropalermoite crystal sare prismatic with striations parallel to the direction of elongation (the a axis) up to 200 μm × 50 μm × 45 μm in size. The mineral is colourless, transparent with a white streak and vitreous lustre and is visually indistinguishable from palermoite. It is brittle with subconchoidal fracture and has a Mohs hardness of 5.5. Cleavage is perfect on {001}, fair on {100} and no parting was observed. The calculated density is 3.502 g cm–3. Natropalermoite is biaxial (–), α = 1.624(1), β = 1.641(1), γ = 1.643(1) (589nm), 2Vmeas = 43(4)°, 2Vcalc = 38°. An electron microprobe analysis yielded an empirical formula (based on 20 O apfu) of (Na1.69Li0.31)∑2.00(Sr0.95Mg0.04Ca0.02Ba0.01)∑1.02(Al3.82Mn0.03Fe0.03)∑3.88(P1.01O4)4(OH)4.

Natropalermoite is orthorhombic, space group Imcb, a = 11.4849(6), b = 16.2490(7), c = 7.2927(4) Å, V = 1360.95(17) Å3, Z = 4. Natropalermoite is isotypic with palermoite, but substitution of the larger Na for Li results in substantial increase of the b cell parameter. Four of the seven Na–O distances are longer than their equivalents in palermoite, resulting in a more regular 7-fold coordination polyhedron about Na. The eight strongest peaks in the calculated X-ray powder diffraction are [dcalc(Å),Irel%, (hkl)]: [3.128, 100, (321)], [4.907, 68, (121)], [3.327, 48, (022)], [4.689, 45, (220)], [3.078, 45, (202)], [2.453, 38, (242)], [2.636, 35, (411)], [2.174, 35, (422)].

Background: The extent to which care home residents with severe dementia show awareness is influenced by the extent to which the environment provides opportunities for engagement and by the way in which care staff interact with them. We aimed to establish whether training care staff to observe and identify signs of awareness in residents with severe dementia resulted in improved quality of life for residents.

Methods: In this pilot cluster randomized trial, care staff in four homes (n = 32) received training and supervision and carried out structured observations of residents using the AwareCare measure (n = 32) over an eight-week period, while staff in four control homes (n = 33) had no training with regard to their residents (n = 33) and no contact with the research team. The primary outcome was resident quality of life. Secondary outcomes were resident well-being, behavior and cognition, staff attitudes and well-being, and care practices in the home.

Results: Following intervention, residents in the intervention group had significantly better quality of life as rated by family members than those in the control group, but care staff ratings of quality of life did not differ. There were no other significant between-group differences. Staff participating in the intervention identified benefits in terms of their understanding of residents’ needs.

Conclusions: Staff were able to use the observational measure effectively and relatives of residents in the intervention homes perceived an improvement in their quality of life.
