Background: Brain tumors present unique challenges to patient and family quality of life (QOL). Cognitive dysfunction is common and functionally limiting, with no established treatments. These studies evaluate feasibility and preliminary efficacy of behavioral interventions developed for neuro-oncology patients. Study 1: A randomized controlled trial (N=25 primary brain tumor patients) compared an adapted version of Goal Management Training (GMT, a neuroscience-based integration of mindfulness and strategy training) and a newly-designed supportive psychoeducational intervention (Brain Health Program, BHP) to standard of care. Each intervention comprised 8 individual sessions and at-home practice between sessions. GMT patients’ executive functions improved immediately (p=.077, d=1.13), with maintenance at 4-month follow-up (p=.046, d=1.09). Both intervention groups reported improvements in everyday cognitive functioning immediately (p=.049; d’s GMT=0.43, BHP=0.79) and at follow-up (p=.001; d’s GMT=0.22, BHP=1.01). BHP patients also reported improved mood (p’s=.026 & .012, d’s=0.61 & 0.62). Study 2: Following a needs assessment about cognitive concerns and QOL in brain metastases patients (N=109) and caregivers (N=31), we developed a novel, brief (3 sessions + homework) Cognitive Support Program to provide education and strategy-training in key areas of concern: executive functions, memory, and communication. Options include caregiver co-training, and in-person or web-based delivery. Preliminary data from a pilot trial in progress demonstrate objective and subjective improvements. Conclusions: Cognitive rehabilitation may be a feasible and effective option for primary or metastatic brain tumor patients, addressing a need that is largely unmet in standard cancer care. Further development and larger trials appear warranted, with capacity for remote delivery recommended.

Predictors of long-term (13 year) outcome of schizophrenia are reported for a representative cohort of ‘treated incidence’ patients ascertained on their first contact with Nottingham psychiatric services between 1978–80. An initial (baseline) model including previously reported predictors of 2-year outcome (age, gender, ever married, acuteness of onset) and length of untreated illness was used to predict a range of outcome measures covering the domains of disability, psychopathology, hospitalization, employment, social activity, and global outcome. This model demonstrated significant prognostic ability across all non-hospitalization outcomes under both ICD-10 and ICD-9 diagnoses of schizophrenia, but was attenuated under broad (ICD-9 and CATEGO S, P or O) and restrictive (S+) diagnostic classifications. Female gender predicted more favourable outcome under all diagnostic classifications except S+. In an extended analysis, the addition of initial 2-year course type substantially increased the prognostic ability of the model under all diagnostic classifications and enabled over 30% of the variance in global ratings of disability and symptoms to be predicted. In this extended model female gender predicted more favourable outcome over and above the effect of course type, across most domains under ICD-10, and for disability and psychopathology under other diagnostic classifications. The inclusion of measures of psychopathology at the time of first assessment, pre-morbid functioning, and duration of index admission conferred only marginal additional predictive ability for respective outcomes in the domains of psychopathology, social activity, employment and hospitalization. Hospitalization during the past year was the most difficult outcome to predict under any model suggesting that resource utilization represents the ‘administrative outcome’ of schizophrenia and serves as a poor proxy for broader concerns in the era of community care. These data demonstrate that key demographic variables and the mode of onset influence the long-term course of schizophrenia, but that early course type is a particularly strong predictor.

Some fast food restaurants have introduced a trade embargo on beef sold through livestock markets on the grounds that welfare standards associated with live auction markets are worse than standards associated with direct sale to abattoirs. The current study examined the handling difficulties and welfare standards at 24 UK cattle and calf markets, and comparisons were made according to class of animal (mainly store or finished) and according to throughput of the market, <100 livestock units (LSU) per week, 100–300 LSU per week and >300 LSU per week. Handling problems examined included refusal to move, balking, slips, falls, impacts, inappropriate handling such as excessive use of a stick, hazardous jumping and confusion while loading onto vehicles. The most common difficulties were impacts, slips and falls during grading and when putting cattle up to the sale ring. Slipping was also common in finished cattle while they were in the ring, and they were prone to impacts when returning to a holding pen. Refusing to load onto vehicles after the sale was common in both finished and store cattle. Calves were prone to going down on their knees when moving onto the tailboards of vehicles. Of the markets, 0·47 had potential bruising or impact points in the grading facilities and 0·67 of the markets did not have a way of ensuring that legs did not get trapped between gates and gateposts if cattle attempted to jump out of a holding pen. In most other respects the prevalence of weaknesses in the facilities and problems during handling was low.

The current study examined the handling difficulties and welfare standards at 24 UK livestock markets. Comparisons were made according to class of animal (store, fat, breeding animals, etc.) and throughput of the market: <100 livestock units (LU) per week, 100–300 LU per week and >300 LU per week. Handling problems examined included refusal to move, balking, slips, falls, impacts, isolation leading to apparent distress, confusion while loading onto vehicles and inappropriate handling such as wool pulling. The overall prevalence of each handling problem was low (usually <0·05 of the sheep). The most common difficulties were impacts, slips and falls when grading fat lambs, and confusion or refusal to load onto the vehicles after the sale in ewes. Store lambs were generally easier to handle than fat lambs. They were less prone to refusing to move, balking, impacts, slips and falls. In fat lambs, slips and falls during grading were more common at small markets, while at larger markets there were more impacts, slips and falls during selling. Confusion during loading onto vehicles after the sale was more common in breeding ewes and rams, and at small markets. Projections in the corridors that were considered to be potential bruising or impact points were found in 0·33 of the markets and 0·71 did not have a way of ensuring that legs could not get trapped between gates and gateposts if sheep attempted to jump out of a holding pen. In most other respects the prevalence of problems with the facilities and during handling was low and it was concluded that a trade embargo on selling fat lambs in markets might not be justified.
Determining optimum planting dates for pearl millet for two contrasting environments using a modelling approach

Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L) R. Br.] is an important cereal crop in Niger, West Africa and a potential crop for the United States of America (USA). Only a few studies have been conducted in either country to identify the optimum planting dates for high and stable yields, in part because planting date experiments are resource-intensive. Crop simulation models can be an alternative research tool for determining optimum planting dates and other management practices. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the performance of the Cropping System Simulation Model (CSM)–CERES-Millet model for two contrasting environments, including Mead, Nebraska, USA and Kollo, Niger, West Africa and to use the model for determining the optimum planting dates for these two environments. Field experiments were conducted in both environments to study the impact of nitrogen fertilizer on grain yield of three varieties in Kollo and three hybrids in Mead and their associated growth and development characteristics. The CSM–CERES-Millet model was able to accurately simulate growth, development and yield for millet grown in these two contrasting environments and under different management practices that included several genotypes and different nitrogen fertilizer application rates. For Kollo, the optimum planting date to obtain the maximum yield was between 13 and 23 May for variety Heini Kirei, while for the other varieties the planting dates were between 23 May and 2 June. For Mead, the planting date analysis showed that the highest simulated yield was obtained, on average, between 19 and 29 June for hybrid 59022A×89-083 and 1361M×6Rm. Further studies should focus on evaluation and application of the millet model for other agroclimatic regions where pearl millet is an important crop.

BOOMERanG has recently resolved structures on the last scattering surface at redshift ˜ 1100 with high signal to noise ratio. We review the technical advances which made this possible, and we focus on the current results for maps and power spectra, with special attention to the determination of the total mass-energy density in the Universe and of other cosmological parameters.

We report the discovery, using FORS1 at the ESO-VLT and ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, of magnetic fields and chemical peculiarities in the Herbig Ae/Be stars HD 72106 and HD 101412. These stars may well represent pre-main sequence progenitors of the magnetic Ap/Bp stars. At the same time, we fail to confirm claims by Hubrig et al. (2004) of the presence of magnetic fields in the Herbig Ae star HD 139614.

In the 1998-99 flight, BOOMERanG has produced maps of ∼4% of the sky at high Galactic latitudes, at frequencies of 90, 150, 240 and 410 GHz, with resolution ≳ 10'. The faint structure of the Cosmic Microwave Background at horizon and sub-horizon scales is evident in these maps. These maps compare well to the maps recently obtained at lower frequencies by the WMAP experiment. Here we compare the amplitude and morphology of the structures observed in the two sets of maps. We also outline the polarization sensitive version of BOOMERanG, which was flown early this year to measure the linear polarization of the microwave sky at 150, 240 and 350 GHz.

Extraction of Grain Boundary Energies from Triple Junction Geometry

Measurement of the geometry of triple junctions between grain boundaries in polycrystalline materials is used to generate large sets of dihedral angles from which maps of the grain boundary energy are extracted. A preliminary analysis has been performed for samples of magnesia and aluminum based on a three-parameter description of grain boundaries. An extended form of orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) was used to measure both triple junction geometry via image analysis in the SEM and local grain orientation via electron back scatter diffraction. Serial sectioning with registry of both in-plane images and successive sections characterizes triple junction tangents from which true dihedral angles are calculated. If there is local equilibrium at each triple junction, we may apply Herring's relation. By limiting grain boundary character to a (three parameter) specification of misorientation for the preliminary analysis, we can neglect the torque terms and apply the sine law to the three boundaries. This provides two independent relations per triple junction between grain boundary energies and dihedral angles. By discretizing the misorientation and employing multiscale statistical analysis on large data sets, (relative) grain boundary energy as a function of boundary character can be extracted from triple junction geometry. The results are discussed with respect to current understanding of grain boundary structure based on their crystallography. The results suggest that a three parameter characterization of grain boundaries (lattice disorientation) is not an adequate description of boundary character. A full analysis including torque terms and a five parameter boundary description is under development.
TT ARI–94: A Study of 1.6…60 Minute Variability

We report photometric results from 44 runs at 11 observatories during the international campaign ‘TT Ari–94’. No coherent oscillations in the frequency range 10… 900 cycle d−1 are found. The highest peaks in the power spectrum cover the wide range of 28… 139 cycle d−1. Variations occur at a few preferred time-scales rather than at one cycle length, with a possible secular decrease. In the frequency range 90… 900 cycle d−1 the power spectrum obeys a power law with slope γ ranging from 0.8 to 2.6 for different runs.
TT Ari is one of the brightest cataclysmic variables and remains one of the most interesting objects of this class. It exhibits a variety of phenomena observed at time-scales from seconds to months. A recent detailed photometric study of this object and a bibliographical overview may be found in Tremko et al. (1996). Tremko et al. (1992, 1993, 1994) discuss aspects of the TT Ari–88 campaign. Our campaign TT Ari–94 was unprecedented, as the observations were longitude-dispersed, from Japan through Turkmenia, to Europe and the American continent. Moreover, our optical data on October 7 partially overlap with the HST observations obtained by Home & Welsh (1995, private communication). The numerical results of observations obtained during these nights are shown in Table 1.

We present mechanical measurements of the frequency-dependent linear viscoelastic storage and loss moduli, G′(ω) and G″(ω), and the yield stress, τy, and yield strain, γy, for calf thymus DNA (13 kbp) over a range of mitotically relevant concentrations from CDNA = 1 to 10 mg/ml. For large CDNA, we find a dominant plateau elasticity, G′p, at high ω. As ω decreases, G′ falls until it is equal to G′ at the crossover frequency, ωc, below which G″ dominates. We measure G′p ∼ CDNA2.25 and ωc ∼ CDNA−2.4, consistent with scaling exponents for classical polymer solutions. The mechanical |G*(ω)| agree well with those measured using a new microrheological technique based on video tracking microscopy of thermally-driven fluorescent colloidal spheres and a frequency-dependent Stokes-Einstein equation. We have developed this technique to probe how enzymes, typically available in small quantities, can affect the rheology of the DNA. Using it, we report preliminary measurements of a higher ωc for a DNA network in which the ATP-powered enzyme Topoisomerase II transiently cuts and rebinds the DNA, thereby relaxing entanglements.

Using resistor-capacitor networks, sources of experimental artifacts in impedance spectroscopy were investigated, such sources include machine limitations, rig/cabling contributions at high frequencies, and artifacts due to high impedance reference electrodes and their geometrical placement. In the instance of electrode placement, computer simulations with a pixel-based model were in agreement with the experimental observations. Remedies for these artifacts such as rig shielding/grounding, geometrical adjustments, and null corrections are also discussed.
