Fast as Potoroo: Radio continuum detection of a bow-shock pulsar wind nebula powered by pulsar J1638–4713

We report the discovery of a bow-shock pulsar wind nebula (PWN), named Potoroo, and the detection of a young pulsar J1638$-$4713 that powers the nebula. We present a radio continuum study of the PWN based on 20-cm observations obtained from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and MeerKAT. PSR J1638$-$4713 was identified using Parkes radio telescope observations at frequencies above 3 GHz. The pulsar has the second-highest dispersion measure of all known radio pulsars (1 553 pc cm$^{-3}$), a spin period of 65.74 ms and a spin-down luminosity of $\dot{E}=6.1\times10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The PWN has a cometary morphology and one of the greatest projected lengths among all the observed pulsar radio tails, measuring over 21 pc for an assumed distance of 10 kpc. The remarkably long tail and atypically steep radio spectral index are attributed to the interplay of a supernova reverse shock and the PWN. The originating supernova remnant is not known so far. We estimated the pulsar kick velocity to be in the range of 1 000–2 000 km s$^{-1}$ for ages between 23 and 10 kyr. The X-ray counterpart found in Chandra data, CXOU J163802.6$-$471358, shows the same tail morphology as the radio source but is shorter by a factor of 10. The peak of the X-ray emission is offset from the peak of the radio total intensity (Stokes $\rm I$) emission by approximately 4.7$^{\prime\prime}$, but coincides well with circularly polarised (Stokes $\rm V$) emission. No infrared counterpart was found.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by stereotypies or repetitive behaviors and impairments in social behavior and socio-communicative skills. One hallmark phenotype of ASD is poor joint attention skills compared to neurotypical controls. In addition, individuals with ASD have lower scores on several of the Big 5 personality dimensions, including Extraversion. Here, we examine these traits in a nonhuman primate model (chimpanzees; Pan troglodytes) to further understand the relationship between personality and joint attention skills, as well as the genetic and neural systems that contribute to these phenotypes. We used archival data including receptive joint attention (RJA) performance, personality based on caretaker ratings, and magnetic resonance images from 189 chimpanzees. We found that, like humans, chimpanzees who performed worse on the RJA task had lower Extraversion scores. We also found that joint attention skills and several personality dimensions, including Extraversion, were significantly heritable. There was also a borderline significant genetic correlation between RJA and Extraversion. A conjunction analysis examining gray matter volume showed that there were five main brain regions associated with both higher levels of Extraversion and social cognition. These regions included the right posterior middle and superior temporal gyrus, bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, left inferior frontal sulcus, and left superior frontal sulcus, all regions within the social brain network. Altogether, these findings provide further evidence that chimpanzees serve as an excellent model for understanding the mechanisms underlying social impairment related to ASD. Future research should further examine the relationship between social cognition, personality, genetics, and neuroanatomy and function in nonhuman primate models.

Summary
The seminal work on mirror self-recognition, theory of mind, and ape-language abilities beginning in the 1960s has stimulated a recent, significant body research on the cognitive abilities of animals. Because of their greater genetic, morphological, and neuroanatomical similarities with humans, research on cognition in nonhuman primates has held a particular fascination from scientific and public perspective. In this chapter, we present a summary of recent studies by our research group on the general intelligence of chimpanzees. We further present data on (1) the contribution of genetic and non-genetic factors in explaining individual variation in cognitive performance in the chimpanzees and (2) phenotypic, genetic, and environmental associations found between chimpanzee cognition and neuroanatomical organization. We end by discussing limitations in the study of cognition and emphasize the need to include individual as well as grouped data in the reporting of results. We also offer some suggestions for future research that would provide new insight into the evolution of human unique cognitive abilities.

Summary
Primates engage in a variety of complex social behaviors. Broadly speaking, these social behaviors can range from agonistic to affiliative depending on the context of a given interaction and a variety of other factors such as the sex, age, familiarity, and rank of individuals. Social interactions of any kind – whether cooperative or “prosocial,” as they is often termed, or conflict- and aggression-based, often termed “antisocial” – are based on the individual’s personality and cognitive traits and are manifest in their communication and behaviors directed toward others. (Chapter 5 discusses the problems associated with this terminology.) In other words, similar to humans, within different primate groups there are individual differences in the frequency of behaviors that reflect the range of social behaviors that are expressed during social interactions. Understanding how or why this cluster of traits varies among individuals is therefore important for understanding social interactions. It is now clear that one source of individual variation in both competitive and cooperative behavior is genes. Two of the most widely studied are genes that regulate the receptor distribution of oxytocin (OXTR) and vasopressin (AVPRA, AVPR1B and AVPR2). (See Box 7.1 for an overview of terminology and concepts associated with genetic variation.)

Ackermann et al. mention the “acquisition of species-atypical sounds” in apes without any discussion. In our commentary, we demonstrate that these atypical sounds in chimpanzees not only include laryngeal sounds, but also have a major significance regarding the origins of language, if we consider looking at their context of use, their social properties, their relations with gestures, their lateralization, and their neurofunctional correlates as well.

Henrich et al. convincingly caution against the overgeneralization of findings from particular human populations, but fail to apply their own compelling reasoning to our nearest living relatives, the great apes. Here we argue that rearing history is every bit as important for understanding cognition in other species as it is in humans.

The target article by Corballis presents an interesting and novel theoretical perspective on the evolution of language, speech, and handedness. There are two specific aspects of the article that will be addressed in this commentary: (a) the link between Broca's area and gestural communication in chimpanzees, and (b) the issue of population-level handedness in great apes, notably chimpanzees.

Introduction
In the past 12 years, there has been a resurgence of interest in the topic of laterality in non-human species (Bradshaw and Rogers, 1993). The resurgence of interest in this topic in a host of scientific disciplines was to some extent spurred by the review article written by MacNeilage, Studdert-Kennedy and Lindblom (1987) that called into question the prevailing view that population-level hemispheric specialization was all but absent in non-human species save songbirds (see Nottebohm, 1977; Warren, 1980). The theory proposed by MacNeilage, Studdert-Kennedy and Lindblom (1987) met with considerable criticism (see commentaries on the original article) but nonetheless resulted in a subsequent plethora of studies on laterality in non-human species, notably non-human primates (for reviews, see Fagot and Vauclair, 1991; Bradshaw and Rogers, 1993; Ward and Hopkins, 1993; Hopkins, 1996; McGrew and Marchant, 1997). The overwhelming focus of these studies was on hand preference and the determination of whether or not population-level biases were evident for specific kinds of sensory or motor tasks. Parallel to studies on hand preference but in substantially lower numbers were studies that focused on sensory or perceptual asymmetries (see Morris et al., 1993). As with studies of hand preference, the focus of these studies was largely the determination of population-level biases for specific tasks and the similarity in findings relative to humans. The purpose of the current chapter is to review studies that have examined perceptual asymmetries in non-human primates.
Determination of management and topographic influences on the balance between resident and ‘Grasslands Huia’ white clover (Trifolium repens) in an upland pasture using isozyme analysis

An investigation was made during 1988 to test the hypothesis that ‘Grasslands Huia’ white clover (Trifolium repens L.) could be eliminated under close sheep grazing. The effects of grazing management, topography and fertilizer on the contribution of Huia plants to the white clover population in an 85 ha experimental upland pasture ecosystem in the southern North Island, New Zealand (lat. 40° 20′ S, long. 175° 50′ E, 125–350 m altitude) were quantified 11 years after oversowing. Replicated sampling sites (108 in total) were located on nine combinations of slope and aspect within grazing management treatments comprising rotational grazing with cattle (RC), rotational grazing with sheep (RS) and continuous grazing with sheep (CS), with high and low fertilizer treatments in each case. White clover occurrence, leaf area, phosphoglucoisomerase-2 (PGI-2) allele frequencies and the proportion of Grasslands Huia plants in the white clover population were determined at each site. White clover frequency was lower on steeper slopes. Aspect, slope and grazing management affected area of individual clover leaves. The proportion of Huia plants in the white clover population averaged 54·9, 49·0 and 33·6% for RC, RS and CS, respectively (P < 0·039, 5 D.F.). Fertilizer and topography did not affect the proportion of Huia. It was concluded that although Huia did persist after 11 years of close sheep grazing, its contribution to the total white clover population was unsatisfactory in some cases, and use of better adapted cultivars is suggested.

Summary
Bonobos are the only species of great ape for which there are no data concerning self-recognition. Although there is little evidence reported for self-recognition in New or Old World monkeys (see Anderson, 1984; Boccia, SAAH23; Thompson & Boatright-Horowitz, SAAH22), mirror image stimulation (MIS) has been established to elicit behaviors indicative of visual selfrecognition in humans, chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas (see Gallup, 1987; Lewis & Brooks-Gunn, 1979, for reviews; Miles, SAAH16; Patterson & Cohn, SAAH17). In an effort to determine to what extent, if any, visual selfrecognition exists in bonobos, a study was conducted at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center main station and at the Yerkes field station.
Bonobos have until recently been classified as pygmy chimpanzees, but closer examination has revealed significant differences between what are now recognized as two distinct species of the genus Pan (see reviews by Susman, 1984; de Waal, 1991). Bonobos are physically smaller, walk bipedally more often (Doran, 1992), and exist in larger and more sexually active social groups than do “common” chimpanzees (Kano, 1982). Bonobos also exist in smaller ranges and total numbers in the wild than do chimpanzees, and so their exposure to and interaction with humans has been limited. Less than fifty bonobos are currently in captivity in the United States. The language-trained bonobos Matata and her son Kanzi (see Savage-Rumbaugh, 1986) have been observed by the authors to engage in mirror-aided grooming of their teeth and heads; yet until now, no controlled studies have been conducted on selfawareness in bonobos.
