The purpose of this study was to explore musicians’ approaches to performance during practice and identify the factors that underpinned their approaches. We hypothesised that musicians would be able to recall their focus, knowledge and thoughts of their own repertoire during music performance and that such data would reveal musicians’ cognitive behaviours during the performance. By analysing musicians’ retrospective verbal protocols, we found that musicians used four main reasoning processes – study, static analysis, intuition and performer’s analysis – in their approach to music performance. The findings show that musicians utilise multiple cognitive behaviours for music performance. The implications for instrumental music teaching are discussed.
Effect of pain control in suspected acute appendicitis on the diagnostic accuracy of surgical residents

Objective
To determine the influence of early pain relief for patients with suspected appendicitis on the diagnostic performance of surgical residents.
MethodsA prospective randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted for patients with suspected appendicitis. The patients were randomized to receive placebo (normal saline intravenous [IV]) infusions over 5 minutes or the study drug (morphine 5 mg IV). All of the clinical evaluations by surgical residents were performed 30 minutes after administration of the study drug or placebo. After obtaining the clinical probability of appendicitis, as determined by the surgical residents, abdominal computed tomography was performed. The primary objective was to compare the influence of IV morphine on the ability of surgical residents to diagnose appendicitis.
ResultsA total of 213 patients with suspected appendicitis were enrolled. Of these patients, 107 patients received morphine, and 106 patients received placebo saline. The negative appendectomy percentages in each group were similar (3.8% in the placebo group and 3.2% in the pain control group, p=0.62). The perforation rates in each group were also similar (18.9% in the placebo group and 14.3% in the pain control group, p=0.75). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that the overall diagnostic accuracy in each group was similar (the area under the curve of the placebo group and the pain control group was 0.63 v. 0.61, respectively, p=0.81).
ConclusionsEarly pain control in patients with suspected appendicitis does not affect the diagnostic performance of surgical residents.
Extraction of Quantitative Parameters for Describing the Microstructure of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Digital quantification of a two-dimensional structure was applied to a GDC(Gd2O3-doped CeO2)/LSM(La0.85Sr0.15MnO3) composite cathode employed for solid oxide fuel cells. With the aid of high-resolution imaging capability based on secondary and backscattered electron images, two-dimensional electron micrographs were converted to digital binary files using an image processing tool combined with the line intercept method. Statistical analysis combined with a metallurgical tool was employed to determine microstructural factors, i.e., volume fraction, size distribution, and interconnectivity. The current work reports the quantification of the two-dimensional structural images of GDC/LSM composites applicable to solid oxide fuel cells, with the aim of obtaining the volume fraction, size distribution, and interconnectivity as functions of composite composition. The volume fractions of the solid constituent phases exhibit compositional dependence in cathodes; however, LSM interconnectivity increases gradually as a function of LSM composition, whereas that of GDC decreases significantly at 50 wt% LSM.

We report the demonstration of low power phase change memory (PCM) by forming thin self-assembled SiOx nanostructures between Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) and a TiN heater layer utilizing a block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly technology. The reset current was decreased about three-fold as fill factor, which is the occupying area fraction of self-assembled SiOx nanostructures on a TiN heater layer, increased to 75.3%. The electro-thermal simulation shows the better heat efficiency due to the nano-patterned insulating oxide.
Distribution of benthic diatoms in Korean rivers and streams in relation to environmental variables

The diatoms are an ecologically important group of algae that have been extensively studied by ecologists and taxonomists. However, the large-scale patterns of diatom distribution and the factors underlying this distribution are largely unknown. The aims of this study were to identify the large-scale spatial patterns of benthic diatom assemblages in Korean streams and rivers, and to assess the importance of numerous environmental factors on diatom distribution. We classified 720 study sites based on diatom flora. Benthic diatoms, water chemistry, altitude, and riparian land cover and use were characterized by multivariate analyses, Monte Carlo permutation tests, and indicator species analysis. In total, we identified 531 diatom taxa. Diatom assemblages were mostly dominated by species of the genera Achnanthes, Navicula, Nitzschia, Cocconeis, Fragilaria (Synedra included), Cymbella, Gomphonema, and Melosira. Cluster analysis partitioned all 720 sites into eight groups based on diatom species composition. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that altitude, land cover and use, current velocity, electrical conductivity, and nutrient levels explained a significant amount of the variation in the composition of assemblages of benthic diatoms. At the national scale, a downstream ecological gradient was apparent, from fast-flowing, mostly oligotrophic highland streams to slow-flowing, mostly eutrophic lowland rivers. Our data suggest that spatial factors explain some of the variation in diatom distribution. The present investigation of the spatial patterns of benthic diatoms, the ecological determinants of diatom occurrence, and the identification of diatom indicator species contributes to development of a program for assessing the biological integrity of lotic ecosystems in Korea.

Under prolonged electron-beam exposure, perovskite-structured SrTiO3:Pr,Al,Ga (STO) phosphor can be easily reduced due to oxygen loss. In particular, it is well known that dissociative H2O molecules are well adsorbed on reduced STO surfaces. The hydroxyl species produced by such dissociative adsorption of H2O strongly decompose organic compounds chemisorbed on the surface from vacuum ambient used in display devices into carbon species due to the photocatalytic properties of STO. Consequently, it is very likely that this mechanism attributes to the larger amounts of carbon adsorption by electron-stimulated chemical reactions on the STO phosphor surface than other phosphors.
Nanoscale continuous In2O3 coating on phosphor particles for improved low-voltage cathodoluminescent properties

A nanoscale continuous coating of In2O3 on phosphors for low-voltage display applications is proposed in which the electrical conductivity of phosphor screen plays a major role. The effect of In2O3 coating by the sol-gel method on the cathodoluminescence (CL) of ZnGa2O4:Mn phosphors improves the intensity of low-voltage CL noticeably compared with that of In2O3 mixing. It is understood that electrically conductive channels are formed by a much smaller amount of In2O3 addition than that of In2O3 mixing. Especially, based on transmission electron microscopy analysis, the formation of uniform nanoscale continuous In2O3 layers on the phosphor surface was confirmed. Also, the structural and CL characterizations presented in this paper clearly demonstrate that the nanoscale encapsulation of In2O3 layers on phosphors served as protective layers retarding the CL degradation introduced by the low-energy electron irradiation, which is critically important for the development of low-voltage display applications.

A new structure of triode type field emission displays based on single-walled carbon nanotube emitters is demonstrated. In this structure, gate electrodes are situated under cathode electrodes with an in-between insulating layer, so called under-gate type triode. Electron emission from the carbon nanotube emitters is modulated by changing gate voltages. A threshold voltage is approximately 70 V at the anode bias of 275 V.

We have grown vertically aligned carbon nanotubes on a large area of Co-Ni codeposited Si substrates by thermal chemical vapor deposition using C2H2 gas. The carbon nanotubes grown by the thermal chemical vapor deposition are multi-wall structure, and the wall surface of nanotubes is covered with defective graphite sheets or carbonaceous particles. The carbon nanotubes range from 50 to 120 nm in diameter and about 130 μm in length at 950 °C. Steric hindrance between nanotubes at an initial stage of the growth forces nanotubes to align vertically. The turn-on voltage was about 0.8 V/μm with a current density of 0.1 μA/cm2 and emission current reveals the Fowler-Nordheim mode.

Color phosphors have been deposited on indium-tin glasses by utilizing an electrophoretic process for the application to prototype 4-inch full color FED devices. The deposition suspension is prepared with color phosphors of l-3um size, isopropanol, charger and binder. Various parameters, such as deposition time and applied voltages, are systematically performed to this end. As a result, each phosphor exhibited uniform thickness of about 6–10um over the whole plate. Electrical properties of the deposited phosphors are investigated and compared both in the vacuum chamber and in fully-sealed 4” FED conditions. In addition, they are extensively characterized by the SEM and 3-dimentional analysis. Experimental results confirm that the phosphor quality in real FED devices is significantly affected by deposition conditions.
