The Hecke algebra of a Hecke pair (G, H) is studied using the Schlichting completion (Ḡ, ), which is a Hecke pair whose Hecke algebra is isomorphic to and which is topologized so that is a compact open subgroup of Ḡ. In particular, the representation theory and C*-completions of are addressed in terms of the projection using both Fell's and Rieffel's imprimitivity theorems and the identity . An extended analysis of the case where H is contained in a normal subgroup of G (and in particular the case where G is a semi-direct product) is carried out, and several specific examples are analysed using this approach.

A result is presented giving conditions on a set of open discs in the complex plane that ensure that a transcendental meromorphic function with Nevanlinna deficient poles omits at most one finite value outside the set of discs. This improves a previous result of Langley, and goes some way towards closing a gap between Langley's result and a theorem of Toppila in which the omitted values considered may include ∞

In this paper we prove that sub-Gaussian estimates of heat kernels of regular Dirichlet forms are equivalent to the regularity of measures, two-sided bounds of effective resistances and the locality of semigroups, on strongly recurrent compact metric spaces. Upper bounds of effective resistances imply the compact embedding theorem for domains of Dirichlet forms, and give rise to the existence of Green functions with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions. Green functions play an important role in our analysis. Our emphasis in this paper is on the analytic aspects of deriving two-sided sub-Gaussian bounds of heat kernels. We also give the probabilistic interpretation for each of the main analytic steps.

We show how to construct a topological groupoid directly from an inverse semigroup and prove that it is isomorphic to the universal groupoid introduced by Paterson. We then turn to a certain reduction of this groupoid. In the case of inverse semigroups arising from graphs (respectively, tilings), we prove that this reduction is the graph groupoid introduced by Kumjian \et (respectively, the tiling groupoid of Kellendonk). We also study the open invariant sets in the unit space of this reduction in terms of certain order ideals of the underlying inverse semigroup. This can be used to investigate the ideal structure of the associated reduced $C^\ast$-algebra.

An interesting result of Ivanov implies that a non-aspherical relative presentation that defines a torsion-free group would provide a potential counterexample to the Kaplansky zero-divisor conjecture. In this point of view, we prove the asphericity of the length-6 relative presentation $\langle H,x: xh_1xh_2xh_3xh_4xh_5xh_6\rangle$, provided that each coefficient is torsion free.

This paper is devoted to the Dirichlet problem for quasilinear elliptic hemivariational inequalities at resonance as well as at non-resonance. Using Clarke's notion of the generalized gradient and the property of the first eigenfunction, we also build a Landesman–Lazer theory in the non-smooth framework of quasilinear elliptic hemivariational inequalities.

In this paper the spectral properties of the abstract Klein–Gordon equation are studied. The main tool is an indefinite inner product known as the charge inner product. Under certain assumptions on the potential V, two operators are associated with the Klein–Gordon equation and studied in Krein spaces generated by the charge inner product. It is shown that the operators are self-adjoint and definitizable in these Krein spaces. As a consequence, they possess spectral functions with singularities, their essential spectra are real with a gap around 0 and their non-real spectra consist of finitely many eigenvalues of finite algebraic multiplicity which are symmetric to the real axis. One of these operators generates a strongly continuous group of unitary operators in the Krein space; the other one gives rise to two bounded semi-groups. Finally, the results are applied to the Klein–Gordon equation in ℝn.

We study biminimal immersions: that is, immersions which are critical points of the bienergy for normal variations with fixed energy. We give a geometrical description of the Euler–Lagrange equation associated with biminimal immersions for both biminimal curves in a Riemannian manifold, with particular attention given to the case of curves in a space form, and isometric immersions of codimension 1 in a Riemannian manifold, in particular for surfaces of a three-dimensional manifold. We describe two methods of constructing families of biminimal surfaces using both Riemannian and horizontally homothetic submersions.

We study the spectrum of periodic Jacobi matrices. We concentrate on the case of slowly oscillating diagonal terms and study the behaviour of the zeros of the associated orthogonal polynomials in the spectral gap. We find precise estimates for the distance from single eigenvalues of truncated matrices in the spectral gap to the diagonal entries of the matrix. We include a brief numerical example to show the exactness of our estimates.

Let $(M,g)$ be a manifold of bounded geometry with metric $g$. We consider a Schrödinger-type differential expression $H=\Delta_M+V$, where $\Delta_M$ is the scalar Laplacian on $M$ and $V$ is a non-negative locally integrable function on $M$. We give a sufficient condition for $H$ to have an $m$-accretive realization in the space $L^1(M)$.špace{-4pt}

We investigate in this paper the topological stability of pairs (ω, X), where ω is a germ of an integrable 1-form and X is a germ of a vector field tangent to the foliation determined by ω.

We construct and examine an operator space $X$, isometric to $\ell_2$, such that every completely bounded map from its subspace $Y$ into $X$ is a compact perturbation of a linear combination of multiples of a shift of given multiplicity and their adjoints. Moreover, every completely bounded map on $X$ is a Hilbert–Schmidt perturbation of such a linear combination.

It is proved that the Bloch norm of an arbitrary $C^1$-function defined on the unit ball $\mathbb{B}_n\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is equal to

For $a\in(0,\tfrac12]$ and $r\in(0,1)$, let $\mu_a(r)$ be the so-called generalized Grötzsch function which appears in Ramanujan's generalized modular equations. In this paper, several sharp inequalities for $\mu_a(r)$ are obtained and a conjecture on $\mu_a(r)$, which was presented by Qiu and Vuorinen in 1999, is proved.

If G is a finite solvable group and p is a prime, then the normalizer of a Sylow p-subgroup has a normal Sylow 2-subgroup if and only if all non-trivial irreducible real 2-Brauer characters of G have degree divisible by p.

For $0\ltp\le1$, let $h^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ denote the local Hardy space. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a Fourier integral operator defined by the oscillatory integral

where $\phi$ is a $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ non-degenerate real phase function, and $b$ is a symbol of order $\mu$ and type $(\rho,1-\rho)$, $\sfrac12\lt\rho\le1$, vanishing for $x$ outside a compact set of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We show that when $p\le1$ and $\mu\le-(n-1)(1/p-1/2)$ then $\mathcal{F}$ initially defined on Schwartz functions in $h^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ extends to a bounded operator $\mathcal{F}:h^p(\mathbb{R}^n)\rightarrow h^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$. The range of $p$ and $\mu$ is sharp. This result extends to the local Hardy spaces the seminal result of Seeger \et for the $L^p$ spaces. As immediate applications we prove the boundedness of smooth Radon transforms on hypersurfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature on the local Hardy spaces.

Finally, we prove a local version for the boundedness of Fourier integral operators on local Hardy spaces on smooth Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry.

In this paper, we deal with the non-negative solutions of a degenerate parabolic system with nonlinear coupled boundary conditions and non-negative non-trivial compactly supported initial data. The critical Fujita exponents are given and the blow-up rates of the non-global solution are obtained.

In this paper we explore the possibility of defining $p$-local finite groups in terms of transfer properties of their classifying spaces. More precisely, we consider the question, posed by Haynes Miller, of whether an equivalent theory can be obtained by studying triples $(f,t,X)$, where $X$ is a $p$-complete, nilpotent space with a finite fundamental group, $f:BS\to X$ is a map from the classifying space of a finite $p$-group, and $t$ is a stable retraction of $f$ satisfying Frobenius reciprocity at the level of stable homotopy. We refer to $t$ as a retractive transfer of $f$ and to $(f,t,X)$ as a retractive transfer triple over $S$.

In the case where $S$ is elementary abelian, we answer this question in the affirmative by showing that a retractive transfer triple $(f,t,X)$ over $S$ does indeed induce a $p$-local finite group over $S$ with $X$ as its classifying space.

Using previous results obtained by the author, we show that the converse is true for general finite $p$-groups. That is, for a $p$-local finite group $(S,\mathcal{F},\mathcal{L})$, the natural inclusion $\theta:BS\to X$ has a retractive transfer $t$, making $(\theta,t,|\mathcal{L}|^{\wedge}_p)$ a retractive transfer triple over $S$. This also requires a proof, obtained jointly with Ran Levi, that $|\mathcal{L}|^{\wedge}_p$ is a nilpotent space, which is of independent interest.

This paper is an attempt to understand a phenomenon of maximal operators associated with bases of three-dimensional rectangles of dimensions $(t,1/t,s)$ within a framework of more general Soria bases. The Jessen–Marcinkiewicz–Zygmund Theorem implies that the maximal operator associated with a Soria basis continuously maps $L\log^2L$ into $L^{1,\infty}$. We give a simple geometric condition that guarantees that the $L\log^2L$ class cannot be enlarged. The proof develops the author's methods applied previously in the two-dimensional case and is related to theorems of Córdoba, Soria and Fefferman and Pipher.
