Summary
A common theme internationally is that uncertainty has been caused by all the discussion and debate about the meaning of international human rights principles, and how laws and procedures should be applied in ways consistent with them. That uncertainty is to the detriment of prompt and effective care and treatment, and is largely unnecessary. The discussion and debate can be esoterically distant not only from practical realities, but from what international human rights instruments actually say and were intended to say, as opposed to the varying views that have been expressed as to what they could or should have said.

Horse racing is a unique weight-making sport which requires jockeys to maintain a chronically low body weight throughout an extended racing season. These athletes typically eat one main meal per day when racing and often depend on racecourses for food provision. To date, racecourse catering provision to jockeys in Ireland has not been assessed. The aims of this study were to evaluate food provision at racecourses in Ireland, assess jockeys’ satisfaction with current food provision and to explore key stakeholders’ perceptions of current food provision. An audit tool was used to evaluate current food provision at 25 of the 26 Irish racecourses. The audit was scored out of 44.5 points and each racecourse was categorised as < 50% ‘Requires nutritional guidance from a dietitian/sports nutritionist’, 50–60% ‘Bronze’, 61–75% ‘Silver’, 76–90% ‘Gold’, > 90% ‘Platinum’. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with jockeys (n = 125), racecourse managers (n = 2), racecourse catering managers (n = 2), and race day caterers (n = 1) to establish their perspectives on current food provision. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS and qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. Audit scores ranged from 14.5–27.5. Based on their current food provision, nine racecourses were identified as ‘Requiring nutritional guidance from a dietitian/sports nutritionist’, 13 were categorized as ‘Bronze’ and two as ‘Silver’. Grade 3 racecourses achieved significantly lower audit scores than Grade 1 and 2 racecourses. Jockeys’ satisfaction ratings were positively associated with audit score. The main themes identified by jockeys included hot food, autonomy over food choices, and greater variety of foods. The main themes identified by managerial and catering staff were categorised under two domains, including perceptions of and factors influencing current provision, and barriers to and facilitators for improved provision. Support from a dietitian/sports nutritionist was identified in 22 of the 25 racecourses to improve food provision to support the needs of modern-day jockeys. Recommendations include development of minimum standards for weigh room food provision and basic training for catering staff on healthy, appetizing foods that are conducive to making weight. Guidelines endorsed by the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board (IHRB), Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) and the Irish Jockeys Association (IJA) should be developed and food provision at racecourses should be audited regularly. Achievable racecourse-specific interventions should be implemented to improve the provision of food and nutrient delivery to this athlete population.

We evaluate the variability in basal friction for Kronebreen, Svalbard, a fast-flowing tidewater glacier. We invert 3 years (2013–15) of surface velocities at high temporal resolution (generally 11 days), to estimate the changing basal properties of the glacier. Our results suggest that sliding behaviour of Kronebreen within a year is primarily influenced by changes in water input patterns during the meltwater season and basal friction is highly variable from a year to another. At present, models usually employ parameterisations to encompass the complex physics of glacier sliding by mathematically simulate their net effect. For such ice masses with strong seasonal variations of surface melt, the spatio-temporal patterns of basal friction imply that it is neither possible nor appropriate to use a parameterisation for bed friction that is fixed in space and/or time, at least in a timescale of a few years. Basal sliding may not only be governed by local processes such as basal topography or summer melt, but also be mediated by factors that vary over a larger distance and over a longer time period such as subglacial hydrology organisation, ice-thickness changes or calving front geometry.

The woylie Bettongia penicillata is categorized as Critically Endangered, having declined by c. 90% between 1999 and 2006. The decline continues and the cause is not fully understood. Within a decline diagnosis framework we characterized the nature of the decline and identified potential causes, with a focus on the species’ largest populations, located in south-west Western Australia. We described the spatio-temporal pattern of the decline, and several attributes that are common across sites. We categorized the potential causes of the decline as resources, predators, disease and direct human interference. Based on the available evidence the leading hypothesis is that disease may be making woylies more vulnerable to predation but this remains to be tested. No substantial recoveries have been sustained to date, and one of the three remaining indigenous populations now appears to be extinct. Therefore, verifying the factors causing the decline and those limiting recovery is becoming increasingly urgent. Active adaptive management can be used to test putative agents, such as introduced predators. Insurance populations and ecological monitoring should also be included in an integrated conservation and management strategy for the species.

Seeking new forms of expression in computer music, a small number of laptop composers are braving the challenges of coding music on the fly. Not content to submit meekly to the rigid interfaces of performance software like Ableton Live or Reason, they work with programming languages, building their own custom software, tweaking or writing the programs themselves as they perform. Often this activity takes place within some established language for computer music like SuperCollider, but there is no reason to stop errant minds pursuing their innovations in general scripting languages like Perl. This paper presents an introduction to the field of live coding, of real-time scripting during laptop music performance, and the improvisatory power and risks involved. We look at two test cases, the command-line music of slub utilising, amongst a grab-bag of technologies, Perl and REALbasic, and Julian Rohrhuber's Just In Time library for SuperCollider. We try to give a flavour of an exciting but hazardous world at the forefront of live laptop performance.

Summary
Introduction
Brandes and Wetter (1959) first showed that potato virus Y together with 13 other viruses had filamentous flexuous virions about 750 nm in length, some of which were serologically related to one another. They proposed that these viruses formed a natural group, and this was subsequently named the potyvirus group by Harrison et al. (1971).
Large numbers of viruses have been added to the group, and it now contains at least 200 distinct species, or more than a fifth of all known plant viruses. It is the largest and most rapidly growing of the 50 or so families (or groups) of viruses that infect plants and is now named the Potyviridae comprising, at present, three genera, the potyviruses, rymoviruses and bymoviruses (Ward & Shukla, 1991; Barnett, 1992).
Poty viruses are found in all climatic zones, especially the tropics (Hollings & Brunt, 1981). They cause diseases in almost all crop plants and in many uncultivated species; in 1974 they were reported to infect 1112 plant species of 369 genera in 53 families (Edwardson, 1974), and that list too has grown. Their economic impact was also highlighted in a recent survey of important viruses with filamentous virions as 73% of those named were potyviruses (Milne, 1988). Thus it is important to try to understand how the potyviruses have evolved because it might give clues as to why they are such successful viruses.
Most potyviruses belong to the genus Potyvirus, and are transmitted in nature by aphids and through seeds of infected plants. These two properties, together with the diversity of crops they infect, assure the continuous presence of potyviruses in nature throughout the year (Hollings & Brunt, 1981).
