This article explores crossovers from Eastern philosophy and spirituality to contemporary science and medicine in the West. My interest is not so much in specific lines of historical transmission, as in the channels through which they flow. In particular, my argument is that different ontologies – visions of how the world is – either facilitate or block such exchanges. As an example, think about physics. The ontology of mainstream physics is a modern, dualist one, inasmuch as physical thought revolves around a material world from which anything human is absent, and the human leftovers fall to the humanities and social sciences. This ontology, more or less by definition, blocks any resonance with Eastern ideas or practices, and, accordingly, they are almost entirely absent from the history of physics, except, importantly, in lines of work on the foundations of physics, especially quantum mechanics. If one meditates on the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, for instance, boundaries between the observer and the observed start to unravel, the dualist ontology erodes, and there, indeed, one finds all sorts of resonances with the East, as elaborated in an endless list of books that includes, for example, The Tao of Physics and The Dancing Wu Li Masters. That is my basic idea: resonances with the East spring forth in Western science whenever modern dualism starts to fray around the edges. But this essay is not about physics, and I turn now to the post-war history of cybernetics in Britain and its rather different non-modern ontology.

The degradation mechanism of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) was investigated with steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. Our study reveals that the degradation is associated with the decreasing quantum efficiency of the CdSe/ZnS QDs in the devices. Two mechanisms that cause the efficiency reduction were verified in the experiments: i.e., thermal instability and luminescence quenching.

Summary
Introduction
The Medical Protection Society (MPS) is a provider of professional indemnity and advice to doctors, dentists and health professionals around the world. It is a mutual, not-for-profit organisation that offers its members (who number more than 265 000) help with legal and ethical problems that arise from their professional practice. These include clinical negligence claims, complaints, medical council inquiries, legal and ethical dilemmas, disciplinary procedures, inquests and fatal-accident inquiries.
The MPS medico-legal advisers manage a substantial and varied caseload. The telephone advisory service fields more than 18 000 calls a year. This places the MPS and the other medical defence organisations (MDOs) in a unique position, as they are able to hear directly from practising clinicians how they are affected by allegations and subsequent investigations.
Scope
The doctor–patient relationship requires boundaries to function effectively. These same boundaries may at times be crossed, broken or perceived to be crossed or broken, often leading to the breakdown of the relationship. The General Medical Council (GMC) comments:
Trust is a critical component in the doctor–patient partnership: patients must be able to trust doctors with their lives and health. In most successful doctor– patient relationships a professional boundary exists between doctor and patient. If this boundary is breached, this can undermine the patient's trust in their doctor, as well as the public's trust in the medical profession. (GMC, 2006).
Just as there are many different types of boundary, so there are as many ways for doctors to find themselves on the wrong side. Such transgressions can have significant consequences for the immediate therapeutic relationship and for the doctor's working life in general. The threat to the wider public confidence in the profession has resulted in regulatory bodies taking boundary infringements extremely seriously.
It is sexual boundaries that are thought of most often. Doctors who commit sexual crimes against their patients clearly raise concerns about public confidence in the profession and attract extensive media attention, but there are many more common transgressions, for instance treating a family member or taking part in an apparently consensual sexual relationship with a patient.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Halphen studied a remarkable sequence of higher-order linear equations with doubly periodic coefficients, generalizations of a certain Lamé equation, having the property that quotients of solutions are single valued. Here we consider further generalizations where, instead of the Weierstrass ℘-function, the coefficients depend on the first Painlevé transcendent. Using these equations, we obtain new higher-order systems of nonlinear equations having the Painlevé property. We also give new results on the interpretation of the Painlevé tests with regard to the representations of solutions, general and particular, afforded by various branches, and to understanding the corresponding pattern of compatibility conditions.

video observation of oral gastric eversion in a free-living caribbean reef shark (carcharhinus perezi) shows voluntary gastric eversion followed by retraction not only occurs, but is extremely rapid (lasting ∼0.3 s). eversion may occur by stomach relaxation–oesophageal contraction coupled with increased abdominal pressures to enable prolapse, and retraction by a mechanism analogous to suction feeding. this behaviour provides a ‘cleansing’ function for removing indigestible food particles, parasites or mucus from the stomach lining. sharks, and possibly other animals with similar gut morphologies, may use this technique to help maintain a healthy alimentary tract.
