The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) has been a leader in weed science research covering topics ranging from the development and use of integrated weed management (IWM) tactics to basic mechanistic studies, including biotic resistance of desirable plant communities and herbicide resistance. ARS weed scientists have worked in agricultural and natural ecosystems, including agronomic and horticultural crops, pastures, forests, wild lands, aquatic habitats, wetlands, and riparian areas. Through strong partnerships with academia, state agencies, private industry, and numerous federal programs, ARS weed scientists have made contributions to discoveries in the newest fields of robotics and genetics, as well as the traditional and fundamental subjects of weed–crop competition and physiology and integration of weed control tactics and practices. Weed science at ARS is often overshadowed by other research topics; thus, few are aware of the long history of ARS weed science and its important contributions. This review is the result of a symposium held at the Weed Science Society of America’s 62nd Annual Meeting in 2022 that included 10 separate presentations in a virtual Weed Science Webinar Series. The overarching themes of management tactics (IWM, biological control, and automation), basic mechanisms (competition, invasive plant genetics, and herbicide resistance), and ecosystem impacts (invasive plant spread, climate change, conservation, and restoration) represent core ARS weed science research that is dynamic and efficacious and has been a significant component of the agency’s national and international efforts. This review highlights current studies and future directions that exemplify the science and collaborative relationships both within and outside ARS. Given the constraints of weeds and invasive plants on all aspects of food, feed, and fiber systems, there is an acknowledged need to face new challenges, including agriculture and natural resources sustainability, economic resilience and reliability, and societal health and well-being.
Early life adversity predicts an accelerated cellular aging phenotype through early timing of puberty

Background
The current study examined if early adversity was associated with accelerated biological aging, and if effects were mediated by the timing of puberty.
MethodsIn early mid-life, 187 Black and 198 White (Mage = 39.4, s.d.age = 1.2) women reported on early abuse and age at first menstruation (menarche). Women provided saliva and blood to assess epigenetic aging, telomere length, and C-reactive protein. Using structural equation modeling, we created a latent variable of biological aging using epigenetic aging, telomere length, and C-reactive protein as indicators, and a latent variable of early abuse using indicators of abuse/threat events before age 13, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. We estimated the indirect effects of early abuse and of race on accelerated aging through age at menarche. Race was used as a proxy for adversity in the form of systemic racism.
ResultsThere was an indirect effect of early adversity on accelerated aging through age at menarche (b = 0.19, 95% CI 0.03–0.44), in that women who experienced more adversity were younger at menarche, which was associated with greater accelerated aging. There was also an indirect effect of race on accelerated aging through age at menarche (b = 0.25, 95% CI 0.04–0.52), in that Black women were younger at menarche, which led to greater accelerated aging.
ConclusionsEarly abuse and being Black in the USA may both induce a phenotype of accelerated aging. Early adversity may begin to accelerate aging during childhood, in the form of early pubertal timing.

Introduction
Adolescents have to cope with several challenges and restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with many of those incongruent with the typical developmental tasks of adolescent age. Some adolescent might be particularly vulnerable in this situation.
ObjectivesThis study aimed: 1) to collect data on the mental health and quality of life of adolescents during/after the pandemic; 2. to improve adolescents’ mental health by providing an online prevention program that addresses their actual needs; 3. to accelerate the development of culturally adapted prevention programs by involving an international team, and 4. to contribute to adequate preparation for any similar situation in the future.
MethodsParticipants aged 11-18 years and their parents/caregivers were recruited online. Data has been collected regularly in a follow-up study by Inventar zur Erfassung der Lebensqualitat and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The baseline data collection was in March 2020 at first restrictions of the COVID pandemic in Europe
ResultsIn the baseline data 428 adolescents (29.7% boys;70.3% girls) were included. Adolescents reported significantly lower quality of life during the pandemic (F (1,557) = 29.11; p <0.001; R2 = 0.048). There was no significant difference in quality of life according to whether the adolescents live in a household with their siblings ( F (2, 356) = 0.785 p = 0.457; η2 = 0.004), and whether the adolescents have symptoms of hyperactivity (ß = 0.105; p = 0.295).
ConclusionsPrevention based on the results of this study is expected to contribute to maintaining adolescents’ mental health during and after the COVID pandemic.

Archaeological excavations unearthed three burial mounds between 1983 and 1986 at Fehérvárcsurgó (Hungary). Based on the archaeological determination the site was dated to the Early Iron Age. A complex wooden architecture was observed in the largest tumulus containing inner and outer beam constructions separated by stone blocks. Dendrochronological and radiocarbon (14C) analyses were performed on conserved logs (n=5) to constrain the felling date of the timber, identified as oak, and the construction period of the tumuli. The four longest ringwidth series were synchronized providing a 153-yr-long floating chronology. Five blocks were removed from the cross sections and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C analysis was performed on the separated α-cellulose. A wiggle-matching procedure was employed as the 14C ages were in agreement with their relative position in the tree-ring sequence and concurred with the expected archaeological period. The calibrated age range of the last extant ring is 747–707 cal BC (95.4%). The earliest possible felling date of the trees used in the construction was between 735 and 695 BC considering the missing sapwood. This is the first 14C dated tree-ring width chronology from the Early Iron Age in Hungary providing a valuable reference for dendroarchaeological studies along the eastern border of the Hallstatt Culture.

Background.
Compulsory admission procedures of patients with mental disorders vary between countries in Europe. The Ethics Committee of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) launched a survey on involuntary admission procedures of patients with mental disorders in 40 countries to gather information from all National Psychiatric Associations that are members of the EPA to develop recommendations for improving involuntary admission processes and promote voluntary care.
Methods.The survey focused on legislation of involuntary admissions and key actors involved in the admission procedure as well as most common reasons for involuntary admissions.
Results.We analyzed the survey categorical data in themes, which highlight that both medical and legal actors are involved in involuntary admission procedures.
Conclusions.We conclude that legal reasons for compulsory admission should be reworded in order to remove stigmatization of the patient, that raising awareness about involuntary admission procedures and patient rights with both patients and family advocacy groups is paramount, that communication about procedures should be widely available in lay-language for the general population, and that training sessions and guidance should be available for legal and medical practitioners. Finally, people working in the field need to be constantly aware about the ethical challenges surrounding compulsory admissions.

Introduction:
There is a marked overlap between the neuronal pathways involved in sleep/wake regulation and depression. Both the structure and the organization of sleep are altered in depressed patients; they enter the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep earlier, the amount of REM is increased and also the non-REM sleep is reduced in the first sleep cycle.
Serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants (SSRIs) exert their therapeutic effect on the serotonergic system, which has a central role in the modulation of mood and vigilance.
Aims:The aim of this study was to investigate the acute and long-term effect of the SSRI escitalopram on REM sleep in rats.
Methods:The effect of a single (10 mg/kg i.p.) and chronically administered (10 mg/kg/day, released by an osmotic mini pump for 21-day-long) escitalopram was studied in male Wistar rats. Electroencephalogram, electromyogram and motility were recorded for three hours starting at light onset.
Results:The acutely administered escitalopram significantly reduced the time spent in REM sleep in the first three hours, compared to control. However, this REM-reducing effect was abolished after chronic administration.
Conclusion:There was a clear difference in the effect of escitalopram on REM sleep following acute and chronic administration, providing evidence for the adaptive changes of serotonin receptors, which take several weeks to evolve, and considered to have a role in the development of therapeutic effect of SSRIs in the treatment of depression. Background: Secondary neurotransmitter deficiencies have been reported in several reviews. Our primary aim was to assess the relationship among epilepsy, antiseizure medications, and specific neurotransmitter abnormalities. We also evaluated movement disorders and brain abnormalities via magnetic resonance imaging scans in patients with secondary neurotransmitter defects. Methods: This is a retrospective case series of 376 patients who underwent neurotransmitter analysis at BC Children’s Hospital between 2009 and 2013, for a variety of neurological presentations. The biochemical genetics laboratory database was interrogated for results of cerebrospinal fluid neurotransmitter analyses. Clinical data for patients with abnormal results were collected from the hospital charts. Statistical analysis included one-way analysis of variance, chi-square, and a two-way contingency table. Results: Abnormal neurotransmitter values were identified in 67 (17.8%) patients, two (0.53%) of which were attributable to a congenital neurotransmitter disorder and 11 (16.9%) secondary to other genetic diagnoses. Of 64 patients with secondary abnormal neurotransmitter values, 38 (59%) presented with epilepsy and 20 (31%) with movement disorders. A combination of epilepsy and movement disorder was less frequent. Discussion: Acknowledging the limitations of this retrospective chart review, we conclude that, in our cohort, in addition to patients with movement disorders, a considerable number of patients with epilepsy and epileptic encephalopathy also showed secondary neurotransmitter mono-amine abnormalities. There is no clear relation, however, between clinical phenotype and type of neurotransmitter affected. In addition, no association was identified between the type of antiseizure medications and affected neurotransmitter type. We outline the need for prospective studies to further enrich our understanding of the relation between epilepsy and neurotransmitters with a focus on improving treatments and patient outcomes.

Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a debilitating disorder (1). Based on neuromotor impairments it is divided to spastic, dyskinetic and ataxic types (2). Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEMs), monogenic and chromosomal disorders mimic CP (3). We aimed to identify causal genetic variants in patients with atypical dyskinetic CP in whom known IEMs were ruled out. Timely diagnosis is essential for proper management, especially in conditions that mimic CP and are treatable. Methods: We enrolled 23 patients with unexplained atypical dyskinetic CP, for whole exome sequencing. Variants were filtered against public and in-house databases to identify variants predicted as damaging (in silico tools and ACMG criteria). We applied a virtual gene panel of known and suspected CP and movement disorder genes and investigated each sample. Results: The participants presented with symptoms including: spasticity, dystonia, choera-athetosis, ataxia and cognitive delays. We identified 23 diagnoses: 13 dominant,6 recessive and 4 X-linked. 12 patients had movement disorders. In 4, the diagnoses enabled targeted treatment (neurotransmitter supplements in Unverricht Lundborg diseases (CSTB) and PAK3 deficiency, deep brain stimulation in GNAO1 deficiency, medical diet in Glutaric Aciduria (GCDH). Conclusions: Whole Exome Sequencing contributes to establishing diagnosis in patients with atypical dyskinetic CP resulting in precision medicine and improved health outcomes.

The environmental monitoring of waste heaps, sludge reservoirs is an important task. The Pb(Po) accumulation of tobacco has been known for long. Knowing familiar with the accumulation capability can be suitable for bio-monitoring the tailing ponds of the remedied uranium mine, as isotopes may be bound on the skin surfaces or may be absorbed via the roots.
Our research investigates the Pb(Po)-210 concentration values of tobacco plants grown for experimental purposes in the remedied uranium-mine area. During the work the Pb(Po)-210 concentration values of 73 tobacco and soil samples, grown between 2002-2009 were determined using a semi-conductor (PIPS) detector alpha-spectrometer. The source for measurement was prepared using spontaneous deposition process following the combined acidic leaching using Po-209 tracers. Based on the results it can be stated that the Pb(Po)-210 activity concentration values of tobacco and soil samples altered between 2.12 ± 0.8 – 1866 ± 98 mBq/g. Processing the measurement data of the previous years it was apparent that with the changes of the Pb(Po) concentration values of the soil samples the activity concentration values of the tobacco samples also changed proportionally. Therefore, later the migration of radioisotopes disengaged from the tailings dump can also be traced.
Ellipsometric characterization of thin nanocomposite films with tunable refractive index for biochemical sensors

Creating optical quality thin films with a high refractive index is increasingly important for waveguide sensor applications. In this study, we present optical models to measure the layer thickness, vertical and lateral homogeneity, the refractive index and the extinction coefficients of the polymer films with nanocrystal inclusions using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The optical properties can be determined in a broad wavelength range from 190 to 1700 nm. The sensitivity of spectroscopic ellipsometry allows a detailed characterization of the nanostructure of the layer, i.e. the surface roughness down to the nm scale, the interface properties, the optical density profile within the layer, and any other optical parameters that can be modeled in a proper and consistent way. In case of larger than about 50 nm particles even the particle size can be determined from the onset of depolarization due to light scattering. Besides the refractive index, the extinction coefficient, being a critical parameter for waveguiding layers, was also determined in a broad wavelength range. Using the above information from the ellipsometric models the preparation conditions can be identified. A range of samples were investigated including doctor bladed films using TiO2 nanoparticles.

In August 2003, an outbreak of scombroid fish poisoning occurred at a retreat centre in California, USA. In a retrospective cohort study, 42 (75%) of the 56 dinner attendees who ate escolar fish (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum) met the case definition. Individuals who ate at least 2 oz of fish were 1·5 times more likely to develop symptoms than those who ate less (relative risk 1·5, 95% confidence interval 0·9–2·6), and to develop more symptoms (median 7 vs. 3 symptoms, P=0·03). Patients who took medicine had a longer duration of symptoms than those who did not (median 4 vs. 1·5 h, P=0·05), and experienced a greater number of symptoms (median 8 vs. 3 symptoms, P=0·0002). Samples of fish contained markedly elevated histamine levels (from 2000 to 3800 ppm). This is one of the largest reported outbreaks of scombroid fish poisoning in the United States and was associated with a rare vehicle for scombroid fish poisoning, escolar.
The Effect of Xe Ion Beam Treatment on the Interaction Between Gold and GaAs

The effect of the defective nature of the substrate on the alloying behaviour of Xe implanted Au(55 ran)/n-GaAs system was studied using cross sectional transmission electron microscopy.
Low dose Xe implantation (700 keV, 1*1014 ions/cm2) caused the formation of about SO nm thick polycrystalline region of GaAs beneath the gold layer. Annealing the implanted sample at 450°C gold diffused through the polycrystalline GaAs region and formed large pits of Au(Ga) solid solution in the defective area of GaAs having stacking faults and twins. The formation of a regrown GaAs covering layer was observed on the top of the reacted metallization simultaneously.
High dose implantation of Xe++ ions resulted in the formation of amorphous GaAs layer with a thickness of about 750 nm. Twinned regions of GaAs were observed at the amorphous - crystalline GaAs interface by high resolution electron microscopy. Ion beam caused phase transition was observed in this sample. The amorphous GaAs region recrystallized to single crystalline GaAs due to annealing at 400°C.

The electrical and interface parameters of epitaxial orthorombic, textured orthorombic, polycrystalline orthorombic, and polycrystalline hexagonal structures with different initial thickness of the evaporated Gd layer are compared. The Schottky barrier height, the ideality factor, the series resistance, the breakdown voltage, the relative interfacial layer thickness, the energy distribution spectra of interface states, and the equilibrium interface charge have been evaluated from the current-voltage and capacitance-voltage measurements. The obtained results indicate that the initial thickness of the Gd layer influences much more stronger the obtained parameters through the perfection of the epitaxial layer than the crystal structure.
