A comparative crystallochemical study was performed on natural and synthetic hydrotalcite-like compounds with similar compositions. The nature of the brucite-like sheet stacking was addressed by means of powder X-ray diffraction. From the resulting electron diffraction patterns it was possible to establish the order-disorder of the cations in the brucite-like sheet. The results show that a natural sample from Snarum is an intergrowth of hydrotalcite (3R1 polytype) and manasseite (2H1 polytype) at a ratio of 77:23 (wt.%). An aluminian serpentine is associated with the hydrotalcite and manasseite minerals. The structure of a synthetic sample, Mg:Al = 2:1, was determined as space group . For a few crystals in this sample, the octahedral cation distribution is compatible with the observed supercell (a = a′ √3). A second synthetic sample showed the presence of stacking faults and was described as a random layer sequence of two polytypes (3R and 2H).

This study was designed to elucidate the biological variation in expression of many metabolites due to environment, genotype, or both, and to investigate the potential utility of metabolomics to supplement compositional analysis for the design of a new resilient cultivar of Brassica napus that can be steady in phytochemicals in different regions in France. Eight rapeseed varieties, grown in eight regions of France, were compared using a non-targeted metabolomics approach. The statistical analysis highlighted the distance and closeness between the samples in terms of both genotypes and geographical regions. A major environmental impact was observed on the polar metabolome, with different trends, depending on the varieties. Some varieties were very sensitive to the environment, while others were quite resilient. The identified secondary metabolites were mapped into the KEGG pathway database to reveal the most sensitive target proteins susceptible to environmental influences. A glucosyl-transferase encoded by the UGT84A1 gene involved in the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid was identified. This protein could be rate limiting/promoting in this pathway depending on environmental conditions. The metabolomics approach used in this study demonstrated its efficiency to characterize the environmental influence on various cultivars of Brassica napus seeds and may help identify targets for crop improvement.

This research aims to characterize the mineralogical and crystal-chemical purity of two samples of natural talc (BTT6, BTT7) from the occurrence ‘Ecole1’ in the deposit of Minzanzala, southwest Gabon. X-ray diffraction and modal-composition calculations demonstrated the presence of quartz and Al–Fe-bearing phases (kaolinite and/or chlorite and/or Al–Fe oxyhydroxides) as accessory minerals in both ores. In contrast, the chemical and spectroscopic characterization of the talc component revealed remarkable chemical purity expressed by very low Fe contents. According to these results, the talc of Minzanzala might be used as a filler in a wide range of industrial applications, such as in cosmetics, paints, polymers or ceramics.

The last interglacial, commonly understood as an interval with climate as warm or warmer than today, is represented by marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e, which is a proxy record of low global ice volume and high sea level. It is arbitrarily dated to begin at approximately 130,000 yr B.P. and end at 116,000 yr B.P. with the onset of the early glacial unit MIS 5d. The age of the stage is determined by correlation to uranium–thorium dates of raised coral reefs. The most detailed proxy record of interglacial climate is found in the Vostok ice core where the temperature reached current levels 132,000 yr ago and continued rising for another two millennia. Approximately 127,000 yr ago the Eemian mixed forests were established in Europe. They developed through a characteristic succession of tree species, probably surviving well into the early glacial stage in southern parts of Europe. After ca. 115,000 yr ago, open vegetation replaced forests in northwestern Europe and the proportion of conifers increased significantly farther south. Air temperature at Vostok dropped sharply. Pulses of cold water affected the northern North Atlantic already in late MIS 5e, but the central North Atlantic remained warm throughout most of MIS 5d. Model results show that the sea surface in the eastern tropical Pacific warmed when the ice grew and sea level dropped. The essentially interglacial conditions in southwestern Europe remained unaffected by ice buildup until late MIS 5d when the forests disappeared abruptly and cold water invaded the central North Atlantic ca. 107,000 yr ago.

Summary
Introduction
Understanding mammalian tooth crown morphological changes during evolution constitutes a crucial area of investigation common to both palaeontology and developmental biology (Osborn, 1907; Hershkovitz, 1962; Hunter and Jernvall, 1994; Jernvall, 2000; Kangas et al., 2004; Kavanagh et al., 2007; Charles et al., 2009a,b; Harjunmaa et al., 2012). During the past two decades, relationships between tooth morphology, diet and mastication have been deciphered through topographic analyses of the crown surface (e.g. Reed, 1997; Jernvall and Selänne, 1999; Evans et al., 2007; Lazzari et al., 2008a,b; Boyer et al., 2010;Wilson et al., 2012). Such an approach allowed the investigation of several well-documented primate, rodent and multituberculate lineages showing drastic modifications of dental morphology.
Including about one third of modern mammalian biodiversity, present in all the main continental landmasses except Antarctica and New Zealand, the superfamily Muroidea (rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, voles … sensu Musser and Carleton, 2005) displays a huge diversity of cheek teeth in terms of cusp arrangement and crown elevation, that can be associated with different masticatory modes and diets (Butler 1980, 1985; Lazzari et al., 2008b, 2011; Coillot et al., 2013). It has also a very rich fossil record, and a now well-established phylogeny concerning extant species (Jansa and Weksler, 2004; Steppan et al., 2004; Jansa et al., 2009; Fabre et al., 2012).
For these reasons, Muroidea are exceptional in providing many examples that can be used to study the modalities and mechanisms of molar crown diversification not only because the fossil record of many muroid subfamilies is well-documented but because there are many cases of parallel and convergent evolutions of dental morphologies. Such convergences involve the recurrent emergences of supplementary cusps, but also hypsodonty, lophodonty (formation of crests) or formation of prismatic crowns. These convergences alter the phylogenetic signal carried by the teeth and greatly complicate morphological cladistic studies (De Bruijn et al., 1996).
Consolidating Rural School Districts: Potential Savings and Effects on Student Achievement

One frequently proposed policy is to consolidate rural school districts in order to save money by obtaining economies of size. The effects of school district size on both expenditures and standardized test scores are estimated for Oklahoma. Results indicate that economies of scale with respect to expenditures per student exist up to an average daily membership (ADM) of 965 students, but that as school districts become larger, tests scores decline. Even if savings in school district administration from consolidation are spent on instruction, state average test scores would decrease slightly. Thus, school district consolidation can reduce costs, but it will also reduce student learning.

Interactions between ants and non-myrmecochorous diaspores occur frequently on the forest floor and the results of these interactions (e.g. diaspore cleaning or removal) will often depend on the morpho-chemical characteristics of the diaspores. We conducted two different experiments with seven plant species in the north-eastern Atlantic forest, Brazil. To evaluate whether ant interactions decrease diaspore persistence time on the forest floor, we established sample stations by placing five diaspores of each species spaced every 10 m along a transect and monitored ant interactions over a 24-h period. We also compared diaspore removal by ants and vertebrates through a paired experiment. We monitored removal of the seven plant species in treatments where ants were excluded and treatments where vertebrates were excluded. We recorded 332 ant–diaspore interactions, most resulting in ants cleaning diaspores in situ. Persistence of diaspores on the forest floor varied greatly among studied species and was less than 50% for three species. Ants also removed more diaspores than did vertebrates. Number of diaspores removed by ants was greater for small diaspores and with high lipid concentration. Ant–diaspore interactions may not always exert a positive influence on plant recruitment for diaspores with poor nutrient concentration. Consequently, ants may play a disproportionately important role as secondary dispersers in tropical forests.
Dietary supplementation with fish gelatine modifies nutrient intake and leads to sex-dependent responses in TAG and C-reactive protein levels of insulin-resistant subjects

Previous studies have shown that fish protein, as well as marine n-3 PUFA, may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk profile. The objectives of this study were to investigate the combined effects of fish gelatine (FG) and n-3 PUFA supplementation on (1) energy intake and body weight, (2) lipid profile and (3) inflammatory and CVD markers in free-living insulin-resistant males and females. Subjects were asked to consume, in a crossover study design with two experimental periods of 8 weeks each, an n-3 PUFA supplement and n-3 PUFA supplement plus FG (n-3 PUFA + FG). n-3 PUFA + FG led to an increase in protein intake and a decrease in carbohydrate intake compared with n-3 PUFA (P < 0·02) in males and females. Sex–treatment interactions were observed for TAG (P = 0·03) and highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) (P = 0·001) levels. In females, n-3 PUFA reduced plasma TAG by 8 % and n-3 PUFA + FG by 23 %, whereas in males, n-3 PUFA reduced plasma TAG by 25 % and n-3 PUFA + FG by 11 %. n-3 PUFA increased serum hsCRP by 13 % and n-3 PUFA + FG strongly reduced hsCRP by 40 % in males, whereas in females, n-3 PUFA reduced serum hsCRP by 6 % and n-3 PUFA + FG increased hsCRP by 20 %. In conclusion, supplementation with FG may enhance the lipid-lowering effect of marine n-3 PUFA in females and beneficially counteract the effect of n-3 PUFA on serum hsCRP in males. Further studies are needed to identify the sex-dependent mechanisms responsible for the divergent effects of FG on TAG and hsCRP levels in females and males, respectively.
Risk of congenital heart defects is influenced by genetic variation in folate metabolism

Genetic disturbances in folate metabolism may increase risk for congenital heart defects. We examined the association of heart defects with four polymorphisms in folate-related genes (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) c.677C > T, MTHFR c.1298A > C, methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) c.66A > G, and reduced folate carrier (SLC19A1) c.80A > G) in a case–control study of children (156 patients, 69 controls) and mothers of children with heart defects (181 patients, 65 controls), born before folic acid fortification. MTRR c.66A > G in children modified odds ratios for overall heart defects, specifically ventricular septal defect and aortic valve stenosis (p-value below 0.05). The 66GG and AG genotypes were associated with decreased odds ratios for heart defects (0.42, 95% confidence interval (0.18–0.97) and 0.39 (0.18–0.84), respectively). This overall association was driven by decreased risk for ventricular septal defect for 66GG and AG (odds ratio 0.32 (0.11–0.91) and 0.25 (0.09–0.65)) and decreased odds ratio for aortic valve stenosis for 66AG (0.27 (0.09–0.79)). The association of ventricular septal defect and 66AG remained significant after correction for multiple testing (p = 0.0044, multiple testing threshold p = 0.0125). Maternal MTHFR 1298AC genotype was associated with increased odds ratio for aortic valve stenosis (2.90 (1.22–6.86), p = 0.0157), but this association did not meet the higher multiple testing threshold. No association between MTHFR c.677C > T or SLC19A1 c.80A > G and heart defect risk was found. The influence of folate-related polymorphisms may be specific to certain types of heart defects; larger cohorts of mothers and children with distinct sub-classes are required to adequately address risk.

Background.
The strength of the association between intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired nosocomial infections (NIs) and mortality might differ according to the methodological approach taken.
Objective.TO assess the association between ICU-acquired NIs and mortality using the concept of population-attributable fraction (PAF) for patient deaths caused by ICU-acquired NIs in a large cohort of critically ill patients.
Setting.Eleven ICUs of a French university hospital.
Design.We analyzed surveillance data on ICU-acquired NIs collected prospectively during the period from 1995 through 2003. The primary outcome was mortality from ICU-acquired NI stratified by site of infection. A matched-pair, case-control study was performed. Each patient who died before ICU discharge was defined as a case patient, and each patient who survived to ICU discharge was denned as a control patient. The PAF was calculated after adjustment for confounders by use of conditional logistic regression analysis.
Results.Among 8,068 ICU patients, a total of 1,725 deceased patients were successfully matched with 1,725 control Patients. The adjusted PAF due to ICU-acquired NI for patients who died before ICU discharge was 14.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 14.4%—14.8%). Stratified by the type of infection, the PAF was 6.1% (95% CI, 5.7%–6.5%) for pulmonary infection, 3.2% (95% CI, 2.8%–3.5%) for central venous catheter infection, 1.7% (95% CI, 0.9%–2.5%) for bloodstream infection, and 0.0% (95% CI, –0.4% to 0.4%) for urinary tract infection.
Conclusions.ICU-acquired NI had an important effect on mortality. However, the statistical association between ICU-acquired NI and mortality tended to be less pronounced in findings based on the PAF than in study findings based on estimates of relative risk. Therefore, the choice of methods does matter when the burden of NI needs to be assessed.
The MAESFLO Device: A Complete Microfluidic Control System

In spite of considerable efforts, flow control in micro-channels remains a challenge owing to the very small ratio of channel/supply-system volumes, as well as the induction of spurious flows by extremely small pressure or geometry changes. We present here a robust and complete system for flow control in complex microchannel network that both monitors and controls all the flow relevant parameters, that is to say flow rate and pressure. Based on a dynamic control of reservoir pressures at the end of each channel and external thermal flow-sensors, all the parameters are measured with a precision down to 25 μBar and 2nL/min. Thanks to adaptative feed back control loop, the MAESFLO can control either the flow rate or the pressure with high stability over long period whatever the microsystem characteristics. Compared to classic pumps, a significant increase of stability has been reached as no mechanical parts are involved. Indeed the flow rate is pulse free and is stable down to 0.1% of the full scale. Besides, pressure control enables to achieve short response time (less than hundreds of millisec). The MAESFLO is thus a unique system to control flow in complex network architecture and can be considered as an alternative to integrated micro-valves using only external equipments. Indeed, the MAESFLO can stop the flow to nearly zero in one or several branches of a complex microfluidic network while keeping other flows constant. Sequential manipulation of liquids in a definite part of a micro-device is thus possible without expensive and time consuming fabrication processes. It can be particularly useful when dealing with washing steps in the case of biological assay for example. Controlling flow with short response time along with high precision is also a key issue in microfluidic. By combining pressure actuation with flowrate monitoring, short response time are achievable keeping a high precision flow rate. It can be particularly useful for droplet generation and size control, droplet on demand generation, long time living cell perfusion and drug injection… In this work we will present the benefit to control and monitor both pressure and flow rate with the MAESFLO. A lot of information can be extracted from these simple parameters, as hydraulic resistance, monophasic and biphasic apparent viscosity, the volume and the position of a trapped air bubble and many more. The proof of concept of stop flow control will also be shown with experimental results stressing the advantages of the “virtual micro-valve”.
Nearshore dynamics of nutrients and chlorophyll during Mediterranean-type flash-floods

A year-long study in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer (France) assessed the inputs from the local intermittent Baillaury River and the stimulation of nearshore phytoplankton blooms. During flash-floods, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate and dissolved organic carbon concentrations in the river were neither correlated to the river discharge nor to the season. Silicate was correlated to the river discharge. The particulate organic matter load was diluted in a mineral matrix (3–4%) but had a high nutritional quality at the beginning of the flash-flood. The offshore response to the single major flow event (October 2005) was monitored daily during two weeks at 350 m (8 m water depth) and 1.4 km from the river mouth (long-term monitoring station, 27 m water depth). The flash-flood signal was partly hidden at the shallowest site by swell resuspension of bottom sediments. At the deepest station, three phases were identified: (1) at the beginning of flow, river dissolved inputs dilute conservatively leading to increased dissolved inorganic nitrogen and silicate concentrations and decreased seawater salinity, (2) during the main turbid pulse, phosphate is released and (3) after the water column cleared, diatom photosynthesis occurred at 3 m below the water surface, leading seven days after the flow peak discharge to a high of 2 µg L−1 of chlorophyll a, which vanished three days later. The nutrients and salinity recovered their pre-flow values at that time. This dynamics of nutrients and chlorophyll during a flash-flood event is consistent with long-term monitoring data.
Surface Bio-functionalization of boron doped diamond

Biotin was grafted onto boron doped nanocrystaline diamond electrode through a four-step-chemical process. First step of grafting was electro-chemical reduction of p-4,nitro diazonium salts. The grafting was characterized using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and fluorescence analysis. XPS analysis and curve fitting procedure lead to the identification of different bond states of carbon present in the grafted film and highlights difference of coverage rate between samples. AFM highlights the non-mononuclear aspect of the diazonium electrografting. Fluorescence measurements with avidin recognition prove the efficient of the grafting.
Effects of two fermentable carbohydrates (inulin and resistant starch) and their combination on calcium and magnesium balance in rats

Resistant starch and inulin are complex carbohydrates that are fermented by the microflora and known to increase colonic absorption of minerals in animals. The fermentation of these substrates in the large bowel to short-chain fatty acids is the main reason for this increase in mineral absorption. The purpose of the present study was to examine the potential synergistic effect of a combination of these two fermentable carbohydrates. For this purpose, thirty-two adult male Wistar rats weighing 200 g were used in the present study. The rats were distributed into four groups, and fed for 21 d a fibre-free basal purified diet or diet containing 100 g inulin, or 150 g resistant starch (raw potato starch)/kg diet or a blend of 50 g inulin and 75 g resistant starch/kg diet. After an adaptation period of 14 d, the rats were then transferred to metabolic cages and dietary intake, faeces and urine were monitored for 5 d. The animals were then anaesthetized and caecal Ca and Mg absorption were measured. Finally, the rats were killed and blood, caecum and tissues were sampled. Ca and Mg levels were assessed in diets, faeces, urine, caecum and plasma by atomic absorption spectrometry. Our results confirmed that inulin and resistant starch ingestion led to considerable caecal fermentation in the three experimental groups compared with the control group diet. Moreover, both carbohydrates significantly increased the intestinal absorption and balance of Ca and Mg, without altering the plasma level of these two minerals. Interestingly, the combination of the studied carbohydrates increased significantly (P<0·05) the caecal soluble Ca and Mg concentrations, the apparent intestinal absorption and balance of Ca, and non-significantly the plasma Mg level. In conclusion, a combination of different carbohydrates showed synergistic effects on intestinal Ca absorption and balance in rats. Further studies with other types of carbohydrate combinations should be carried out to extend these findings.
