Biofuel crops such as napiergrass possess traits characteristic of invasive plant species, raising concern that biofuels might escape cultivation and invade surrounding agricultural and natural areas. Napiergrass biofuel types are being developed to have reduced invasion risk, but these might be cultivated in areas where naturalized populations of this species are already present. The successful management of napiergrass biofuel plantations will therefore require techniques to monitor for escaped biofuels as distinguished from existing naturalized populations. Here we used 20 microsatellite DNA markers developed for pearl millet to genotype 16 entries of napiergrass, including naturalized populations and accessions selected for biofuel traits. Use of the markers showed a clear genetic separation between the biofuel types and naturalized entries and revealed naturalized populations undergoing genetic isolation by distance. These findings demonstrated the utility of microsatellite marker transfer in the development of an important tool for managing the invasion risk of a potential biofuel crop.

Aims and method
Using a retrospective observational approach, we aimed to discern whether there was a difference in metabolic parameters between psychiatric and general practice populations in the same locality. Second, we aimed to establish differences in metabolic parameters of patients taking olanzapine, clozapine or aripiprazole.
ResultsPatients with psychiatric illness had a body mass index (BMI) comparable to that of the general practice population (28.7 v. 29.7 kg/m2), but blood glucose was significantly lower in the general practice population (4.8 v. 6.1 mmol/L). Olanzapine was associated with the lowest BMI (26.1 kg/m2) and aripiprazole the highest (32.2 kg/m2), with no difference in blood glucose between antipsychotics.
Clinical implicationsAwareness of environmental factors and how they affect individuals is important and medications are not the only cause of metabolic effects. There may be a channelling bias present, meaning practitioners are cognisant of potential metabolic effects prior to prescribing. Overall monitoring of physical health is important regardless of potential cause.

Cross-sectional echocardiography has made a major contribution to the preoperative evaluation of the patient with an atrioventricular septal defect,1−5 such that in many instances this modality has been the sole imaging technique used to formulate a medical or surgical plan6. With the advent of Doppler echocardiography additional hemodynamic information is now available, which enables the cardiologist and surgeon to evaluate the site and magnitude of associated atrioventricular valvar regurgitation, and obtain an accurate measurement of pulmonary arterial pressure along with an assessment of outflow tract obstruction, if present.

Transplantation of cell suspensions containing olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) has been reported to remyelinate demyelinated axons in the spinal cord with a Schwann cell (SC)-like pattern of myelination. However, questions have been raised recently as to whether OECs can form SC-like myelin. To address this issue we prepared SCs and OECs from transgenic rats in which a marker gene, human placental alkaline phosphatase (hPAP), is linked to the ubiquitously active promoter of the R26 gene. SCs were prepared from the sciatic nerve and OECs from the outer nerve-fiber layer of the olfactory bulb. Positive S100 and p75 immunostaining indicated that >95% of cells in culture displayed either SC or OEC phenotypes. Suspensions of either SCs or OECs were transplanted into an X-irradiation/ethidium bromide demyelinating lesion in the spinal cord. We observed extensive SC-like remyelination following either SC or OEC transplantation 3 weeks after injection of the cells. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) chromagen reaction product was associated clearly with the myelin-forming cells. Thus, cell suspensions that are enriched in either SCs or OECs result in peripheral-like myelin when transplanted in vivo.

Experiments have been performed to study the co-rotating wing-tip vortex pair produced by a pair of rectangular wings in a split-wing configuration. Detailed measurements made in cross-sections upstream and downstream of merger reveal, for the first time, the complex turbulence structure of this flow. The vortices spiral around each other and merge some 20 chordlengths downstream of the wings. As merger is approached the vortices lose their axisymmetry – their cores develop lopsided tangential velocity fields and the mean vorticity field is convected into filaments. The cores also become part of a single turbulence structure dominated by a braid of high turbulence levels that links them together. The braid, which quite closely resembles the structure formed between adjacent spanwise eddies of transitional mixing layers, grows in intensity with downstream distance and extends into the vortex cores. Unlike a single tip vortex, the unmerged cores appear turbulent.
The merging of the vortices wraps the cores and the flow structure that surrounds them into a large turbulent region with an intricate double spiral structure. This structure then relaxes to a closely axisymmetric state. The merged core appears stable and develops a structure similar to the laminar core of a vortex shed from a single wing. However, the turbulent region formed around the vortex core during the merger process is much larger and more axisymmetric than that found around a single wing-tip vortex.
