Objective:
The process of metacognitive monitoring refers to one’s ability to incorporate rapid in-the-moment self-assessments of their cognitive performance. An area of interest within this literature concerns metacognitive accuracy (MA), or the extent to which an individual can discern when their own judgments are incorrect/correct. Much of the work in this area has either focused on school-aged samples or clinical samples, with findings of impairment in metacognitive processes associated with traumatic brain injury, Schizophrenia, cerebrovascular accidents, and Alzheimer’s disease. Notably, decreased working memory and executive functioning are frequently reported in samples with low MA, suggesting a possible reliance on basic cognitive resources in the facilitation of metacognitive processes. Thus, the goal of this investigation was to elucidate potential relationships between individual domains of cognition and higher-order MA. We hypothesized that performance on measures of working memory and executive function would be positively associated with measures of MA.
Participants and Methods:Data from 87 undergraduate students who volunteered in research for class credit were used. All participants completed a computerized metamemory task where six lists of 12 words each paired with varying point values were first presented to the participants. After each list, participants were instructed to score as many points as possible by recalling words they could remember. After a brief delay, participants completed a recognition task using the words presented earlier and provided a retrospective confidence judgement (RCJ) following each item. A metric for MA, meta d', was calculated using signal-detection theory analysis from the reported RCJs and recognition task performance. Participants also completed neuropsychological tests of attention (Trails A), working memory (WM; Backward Digits), executive function (EF; Trails B), mental flexibility (MF; Trails B/A Ratio), and processing speed (Symbol Digit Modalities). A sequential multiple regression was performed with meta d’ serving as the criterion, with education, age, and performance on neuropsychological measures entered as predictors.
Results:The model indicated that a moderate percentage of the variability (R2 = .201) in metacognitive accuracy could be attributed to the combination of predictors in the model (F (7,79) = 2.843, p = .011). Examination of the regression coefficients indicated that only measures of attention (ß = .638, p = .01), MF (ß = .473, p = .041), and WM ß = .244, p = .024) were significantly related to MA after controlling for all other variables in the model.
Conclusions:The model suggests that working memory, attention, and mental flexibility increased in a linear fashion as MA increased. Our hypotheses were partially supported, while working memory predicted MA, its contribution to the overall model was the smallest among the significant predictors. While executive function was not a significant contributor to the model, MF (a component of EF) was. The largest contributor to the model was attention, which supports prior findings in the literature. This outcome would suggest that while separate from EF, metacognitive processes in neurotypical students may rely on other, more basic cognitive processes. These results may prove beneficial in guiding the development of rehabilitative interventions for MA in clinical samples.
Three-dimensional magnetic reconnection in particle-in-cell simulations of anisotropic plasma turbulence

We use three-dimensional (3-D) fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations to study the occurrence of magnetic reconnection in a simulation of decaying turbulence created by anisotropic counter-propagating low-frequency Alfvén waves consistent with critical-balance theory. We observe the formation of small-scale current-density structures such as current filaments and current sheets as well as the formation of magnetic flux ropes as part of the turbulent cascade. The large magnetic structures present in the simulation domain retain the initial anisotropy while the small-scale structures produced by the turbulent cascade are less anisotropic. To quantify the occurrence of reconnection in our simulation domain, we develop a new set of indicators based on intensity thresholds to identify reconnection events in which both ions and electrons are heated and accelerated in 3-D particle-in-cell simulations. According to the application of these indicators, we identify the occurrence of reconnection events in the simulation domain and analyse one of these events in detail. The event is related to the reconnection of two flux ropes, and the associated ion and electron exhausts exhibit a complex 3-D structure. We study the profiles of plasma and magnetic-field fluctuations recorded along artificial-spacecraft trajectories passing near and through the reconnection region. Our results suggest the presence of particle heating and acceleration related to small-scale reconnection events within magnetic flux ropes produced by the anisotropic Alfvénic turbulent cascade in the solar wind. These events are related to current structures of the order of a few ion inertial lengths in size.
Real-time gait metric estimation for everyday gait training with wearable devices in people poststroke

Hemiparetic walking after stroke is typically slow, asymmetric, and inefficient, significantly impacting activities of daily living. Extensive research shows that functional, intensive, and task-specific gait training is instrumental for effective gait rehabilitation, characteristics that our group aims to encourage with soft robotic exosuits. However, standard clinical assessments may lack the precision and frequency to detect subtle changes in intervention efficacy during both conventional and exosuit-assisted gait training, potentially impeding targeted therapy regimes. In this paper, we use exosuit-integrated inertial sensors to reconstruct three clinically meaningful gait metrics related to circumduction, foot clearance, and stride length. Our method corrects sensor drift using instantaneous information from both sides of the body. This approach makes our method robust to irregular walking conditions poststroke as well as usable in real-time applications, such as real-time movement monitoring, exosuit assistance control, and biofeedback. We validate our algorithm in eight people poststroke in comparison to lab-based optical motion capture. Mean errors were below 0.2 cm (9.9%) for circumduction, −0.6 cm (−3.5%) for foot clearance, and 3.8 cm (3.6%) for stride length. A single-participant case study shows our technique’s promise in daily-living environments by detecting exosuit-induced changes in gait while walking in a busy outdoor plaza.
College student sleep quality and mental and physical health are associated with food insecurity in a multi-campus study

Objective:
To assess the relationship between food insecurity, sleep quality, and days with mental and physical health issues among college students.
Design:An online survey was administered. Food insecurity was assessed using the ten-item Adult Food Security Survey Module. Sleep was measured using the nineteen-item Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Mental health and physical health were measured using three items from the Healthy Days Core Module. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to assess the relationship between food insecurity, sleep quality, and days with poor mental and physical health.
Setting:Twenty-two higher education institutions.
Participants:College students (n 17 686) enrolled at one of twenty-two participating universities.
Results:Compared with food-secure students, those classified as food insecure (43·4 %) had higher PSQI scores indicating poorer sleep quality (P < 0·0001) and reported more days with poor mental (P < 0·0001) and physical (P < 0·0001) health as well as days when mental and physical health prevented them from completing daily activities (P < 0·0001). Food-insecure students had higher adjusted odds of having poor sleep quality (adjusted OR (AOR): 1·13; 95 % CI 1·12, 1·14), days with poor physical health (AOR: 1·01; 95 % CI 1·01, 1·02), days with poor mental health (AOR: 1·03; 95 % CI 1·02, 1·03) and days when poor mental or physical health prevented them from completing daily activities (AOR: 1·03; 95 % CI 1·02, 1·04).
Conclusions:College students report high food insecurity which is associated with poor mental and physical health, and sleep quality. Multi-level policy changes and campus wellness programmes are needed to prevent food insecurity and improve student health-related outcomes.
Initial assessment of a novel delivery system (NuDEL™ ®) for the covered Cheatham-Platinum stent

Aims
We sought to evaluate the first-in-man use of a new system for implantation of covered stents in patients with complex structural and CHD.
Methods and resultsRetrospective data were collected of the first 13 NuDEL™ delivery systems used in patients. The NuDEL™ comprises a covered Cheatham-Platinum stent mounted on a balloon-in-balloon and pre-loaded in a long delivery sheath. Data were collected from three centres in the United Kingdom and Ireland. A total of 13 covered stents were delivered via 12 NuDEL™ delivery systems in 12 patients. Among them, six patients had coarctation of the aorta, five patients had right ventricular outflow tract stenosis, and one patient had severe stenosis of a Mustard systemic venous baffle. There were no complications, and all the stents were deployed in the desired position with satisfactory haemodynamic results.
ConclusionsThe development of a bespoke system of a pre-mounted, pre-loaded covered stent may negate some of the technical challenges that complicate large-calibre stent deployment. Our preliminary results suggest that the NuDEL™ system is a safe and effective means of covered stent deployment in challenging anatomy.
Physiological effect of clopyralid on corn as determined by bioassay and light-scattering spectroscopy

The broadleaf auxinic herbicide clopyralid was applied to three varieties of corn (Pioneer 36B08, Pioneer 3730, and Pioneer 3559) to determine whether it was phytotoxic to this crop. The effects of clopyralid on the growth and development of corn were compared with those induced by the auxinic herbicides dicamba, 2,4-D, picloram, and fluroxypyr. When compared with the other auxinic herbicides, clopyralid, applied as a foliar spray at the three- and six-leaf stages of development, caused the least damage to all three varieties of corn. Among the auxinic herbicides tested, fluroxypyr and dicamba caused severe damage to the three varieties, whereas picloram and 2,4-D had significant detrimental effects on the growth and development of varieties 36B08 and 3730. Similar results were also obtained when corn seeds were germinated in petri dishes containing increasing concentrations of the auxinic herbicides. In addition to correlating these growth and development effects with auxinic herbicide–induced physiological changes in corn, we compared the effects of clopyralid and dicamba on proton efflux from isolated protoplasts of the three varieties. Results of these biophysical studies are consistent with those from our growth and developmental studies and confirm that clopyralid is least effective in eliciting a response in corn when compared with dicamba. We conclude that clopyralid does not cause the deleterious effects seen with other auxinic herbicides when sprayed under optimal environmental conditions, i.e., high humidity and temperature.

Background
Subtle abnormalities in frontal white matter have been reported in bipolar disorder.
AimsTo assess whether impaired integrity of white matter tracts is associated with bipolar disorder and genetic liability for the disorder.
MethodA total of 19 patients with psychotic bipolar I disorder from multiply affected families, 21 unaffected first-degree relatives and 18 comparison individuals (controls) underwent diffusion tensor imaging. Whole brain voxel-based analyses compared fractional anisotropy between patients and relatives with controls, and its relationship with a quantitative measure of genetic liability.
ResultsPatients had decreased fractional anisotropy compared with controls in the genu of the corpus callosum, right inferior longitudinal fasciculus and left superior longitudinal fasciculus. Increased genetic liability for bipolar disorder was associated with reduced fractional anisotropy across distributed regions of white matter in patients and their unaffected relatives.
ConclusionsDisturbed structural integrity within key intra- and interhemispheric tracts characterises both bipolar disorder and genetic liability for this illness.

Summary
Introduction
Through evolutionary history, aquatic organisms have been challenged by a vast array of natural foreign chemicals, or xenobiotics, of biogenic, pyrogenic and diagenic origin. More recently, aquatic systems have become the ultimate sinks of anthropogenic inputs of contaminants into the environment as well, increasing the threat to individual organisms and populations. Acute releases of toxic substances by either human activity (McEwen & Stephenson, 1979, pp. 312–15) or natural causes (Steidinger, Burklew & Ingle, 1972) have resulted in many incidences of high mortality in fish populations over short periods of time. More subtle chronic exposures to lower concentrations of xenobiotics, however, can prove to be equally devastating to fish populations. For example, an increased incidence of tumours in feral fish populations has been linked to contaminants such as the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (Malins et al., 1985), and reproductive impairment has been shown in fish which reside in waters receiving pulp and paper mill effluent (Munkittrick et al., 1991).
The susceptibility of fish to xenobiotic action can be modulated by a variety of abiotic factors including water pH, dissolved oxygen content and temperature. In toxicology, as in other areas of biology such as ecology, physiology and biochemistry, the influence of temperature at all levels of biological organization is pervasive and often of dominant importance (Hochachka & Somero, 1984).

We wish to report the synthesis of a new class of peripherally modified, polyphenylated phthalocyanines (Pcs) and metallophthalocyanines (MPcs). These compounds were synthesized by cyclic tetramerization of functionalized pentaphenylbenzophthalonitriles. The phthalonitriles were made in several steps via Diels-Alder cycloaddition between phenylethynylphthalonitrile and substituted tetracyclones. The polyphenylated design leads to enhanced solubility. Thin films can be cast from solutions of the butoxy and dodecaoxy substituted polyphenylated Pcs and MPcs. Cyclodehydrogenation of the Pcs was studied in an attempt to produce planar systems. Preliminary results indicate the pentaphenyl substituent is too bulky to planarize under the conditions employed.

A new type of dendritic molecules containing p-phenylene repeat units has been synthesized. Preliminary results on linear and nonlinear optical properties are discussed.
