The immature stages of Caraphractus cinctus Walker are described.
Four larval stages have been observed which may correspond to three or four instars. In no stage have mandibles been observed.
The first-instar larva is elongated and active. In the second-instar oral lobes are present. In the next stage the larva becomes shapeless and rather transparent. In the last stage the wall of the mid-gut shows conspicuous opaque spots which consist of single cells containing spherical concretions, probably the products of excretion.
These concretions later become free in the gut of the pupa and are discharged in the meconium when the imago emerges from the host egg.
The effects of parasitism on the host eggs of different ages is discussed. In newly laid host eggs all the contents are consumed by the parasitic larvae. In advanced eggs of Agabus the egg of Caraphractus is laid in the mid-gut of the host embryo where the parasitic larva develops, the hard parts of the host larva remaining intact. Parasitism in advanced eggs of Dytiscus is rarely successful.
The larvae of other Mymaridae are discussed and their main features compared. The first-instar larva of Caraphractus does not correspond to any of the previously described types of mymarid larvae.
The seasonal history is described, with the sequence of hosts parasitized throughout the year. From four to six generations of Caraphractus have been bred indoors during the year. The winter is passed as a diapausing prepupa. In some cases diapause may be prolonged. Fertility is high: 121 imagines have been bred from one female of Caraphractus.

Caraphractus cinctus Walker is a parasitoid of the eggs of Dytiscidae. The entire development of this Mymarid takes place in eggs immersed in water and attached to, or embedded in, plant tissue. The winter is passed in diapause as a full-grown resting larva (prepupa) in the host egg.
Diapause of Caraphractus has been studied in the eggs of Agabus bipustulatus. The eggs of this Agabus do not undergo diapause and since the shell is transparent, the larvae of Caraphractus (usually two to three in each egg) are clearly visible during their later stages, so the time of pupation is easily determined.
Experiments were made of chilling the maternal generation of Caraphractus at various stages of development, but this did not lead to diapause in the larvae of the chilled generation, or to any increase in the diapause in the offspring.
When the Mymarid was bred in a north room exposed to natural daylight and darkness, some diapausing larvae occurred in mid-September and by October all were in diapause.
When larvae were reared in long photoperiods (16½–24 hr. light) development was direct, but with short photoperiods (2–15 hr. light), diapause occurred. The critical period lies between 14 and 16 hr. of light.
The stage sensitive to photoperiod is the full-grown larva, and when larvae are reared to this stage under short photoperiod and then transferred to continuous light, direct development is determined within 3 days. Conversely, larvae reared under continuous light and removed to short photoperiod before reaching the sensitive stage, go into diapause.
The larvae are sensitive to light of very low intensity, developing direct with a ‘night’ of 0·03–0·05 f.c. Larvae becoming full grown in the end of August and beginning of September do not diapause and must respond to 2–3 hr. of twilight.
Diapause induced, under artificial photoperiods at any time of the year, usually lasts about as long as the normal winter diapause. If however the prepupae are subjected to temperatures below freezing for about a fortnight (provided they have already been about 15 weeks in diapause) pupation occurs as soon as the temperature is suitable. In cold weather the pupal stage may be greatly prolonged.

This pilot study of child protection case conferences in a region of Melbourne highlights the dynamics of inter-organisational and inter–professional interaction. Data from direct observation of a small number of case conferences and focussed interviews with participants before and after each case conference, in addition to an interviewer administered questionnaire with professionals from agencies regularly participating in case conferences was analysed using manual and computerised methods. The findings relate to: parental attendance; interagency and interprofessional dynamics: case assessment focus; and worker anxiety about conflict. The management of conflict, the tension between the different purposes of case conferences, and the importance of the quality of leadership in case conferences, are discussed.

Current infant feeding guidelines recommend exclusive breast-feeding until the infant is about 4 months old to reduce the risks of early termination of breast-feeding, undernutrition and infection. In many societies, however, supplementary foods are given well before 4 months of age. The present paper describes weaning practices, factors associated with early supplementation and the effects of supplementation on duration of breast-feeding in a random sample of sixty northern Thai breast-fed infants studied prospectively from birth to 2 years of age. Composition of supplementary foods, energy and protein intake from supplements and changes in the supplementary diet with increasing infant age are also described. Rice-based foods were given from soon after birth; 81% of the sample had received supplements by 6 weeks of age. Early supplementary feeding was significantly associated with rural residence, large household size, maternal employment in agriculture and maternal age. Girls and infants with lower birth weights tended to be supplemented earlier. Despite early feeding of supplements, breast-feeding was prolonged, with median duration of 12 months. Early introduction of supplements and quantity of supplements consumed in the first 3 months were not associated with duration of breast-feeding. However, mothers who gave infant formula as the first supplementary food stopped breast-feeding slightly earlier, as did younger mothers living in households with more children.

Circadian variation in fat concentration of breast-milk in a rural northern Thai population

1. Twenty-five northern Thai mothers, breast-feeding their infants on demand, were studied in their homes for 24 h. All breast-feeds were test-weighed and pre- and post-feed expressed breast-milk samples (0·5 ml) taken at each feed.
2. The fat concentration of milk taken during a feed showed significant circadian variation, with maximum values between 16.00 and 20.00 hours and minimum values between 04.00 and 08.00 hours. Fat concentration at the start and at the end of a feed also varied significantly over 24 h.
3. Multiple regression analysis showed that the most important predictor of fat concentration at a feed was the length of time elapsed since the previous feed – the longer this interval, the lower the subsequent fat concentration. Other significant predictors were the fat concentration at the end of the previous feed, and the milk intake at the previous and at the current feed.
4. Fat concentration declined between feeds in proportion to the length of time between feeds, but the decline was less between sleep feeds than between waking feeds. This would appear to be a reflection of the lower post-feed fat concentration and higher pre-feed fat concentration of sleep feeds compared with waking feeds, when other variables relating to feeding pattern are taken into account.
5. The larger the milk intake at a feed, the greater was the increase in fat concentration from the start to the end of the feed. The change in fat concentration was less in feeds taking place during the sleep period than in daytime feeds.

1. The present study assesses the accuracy with which mean 24 h breast-milk composition can be estimated if milk samples can only be collected during the daytime.
2. Twenty-five northern Thai mothers, feeding their infants on demand, were studied in their homes for 24 h. All feeds were test-weighed and 0·5 ml pre- and post-feed expressed milk samples taken at each feed.
3. If daytime sampling was restricted to two breast-feeds, it was found that the best estimate of 24 h fat concentration was given by two randomly chosen daytime feeds, predicting 24 h fat concentration with 95% confidence limits of ±7·0 g/l (equivalent to 21% of mean 24 h fat concentration).
4. Alternative sampling methods using the mean fat concentration of the feed after 08·00 hours and after 18·00 hours, or the first two feeds after 12·00 hours, predicted fat concentration with 95% confidence limits of ±9·7 g/l and ±8·9 g/l (28 and 26% of mean 24 h fat concentration) respectively.
5. If well-tolerated by mothers, it would be preferable to sample all daytime feeds, since this reduces the 95% confidence limits to ±3·3 g/l, equivalent to 10% of the mean 24 h fat concentration.

It is well known that in many orders of typically winged insects species occur which in the adult stage are apterous or have the wings so reduced in size that flight is impossible. Sometimes the reduction of wings affects one sex only, as in the case of the females of certain moths, but in the majority of cases it is exhibited by both sexes. In many instances wing dimorphism occurs irrespective of sex, one form of the species having fully developed wings and the other greatly reduced wings. In some species the wings are polymorphic. The problem of the origin of reduced wings and of other functionless organs is one of great interest from the evolutionary point of view. Various theories have been advanced in explanation, but in the majority of cases the various aspects of the subject are too little known to warrant discussion. More experimental work is required to show how far environmental conditions on the one hand, and hereditary factors on the other, are responsible for this phenomenon. Those species which exhibit alary dimorphism afford material for the study of the inheritance of the two types of wings, but only in a few cases has this method of research been utilized.
