When descriptive ecology meets physiology: a study in a South Atlantic rhodolith bed

This study presents two years of characterization of a warm temperate rhodolith bed in order to analyse how certain environmental changes influence the community ecology. The biomass of rhodoliths and associated species were analysed during this period and in situ experiments were conducted to evaluate the primary production, calcification and respiration of the dominant species of rhodoliths and epiphytes. The highest total biomass of rhodoliths occurred during austral winter. Lithothamnion crispatum was the most abundant rhodolith species in austral summer. Epiphytic macroalgae occurred only in January 2015, with Padina gymnospora being the most abundant. Considering associated fauna, the biomass of Mollusca increased from February 2015 to February 2016. Population densities of key reef fish species inside and around the rhodolith beds showed significant variations in time. The densities of grouper (carnivores/piscivores) increased in time, especially from 2015 to 2016. On the other hand, grunts (macroinvertebrate feeders) had a modest decrease over time (from 2014 to 2016). Other parameters such as primary production and calcification of L. crispatum were higher under enhanced irradiance, yet decreased in the presence of P. gymnospora. Community structure and physiological responses can be explained by the interaction of abiotic and biotic factors, which are driven by environmental changes over time. Biomass changes can indicate that herbivores play a role in limiting the growth of epiphytes, and this is beneficial to the rhodoliths because it decreases competition for environmental resources with fleshy algae.
New mobile methods for dietary assessment: review of image-assisted and image-based dietary assessment methods

For nutrition practitioners and researchers, assessing dietary intake of children and adults with a high level of accuracy continues to be a challenge. Developments in mobile technologies have created a role for images in the assessment of dietary intake. The objective of this review was to examine peer-reviewed published papers covering development, evaluation and/or validation of image-assisted or image-based dietary assessment methods from December 2013 to January 2016. Images taken with handheld devices or wearable cameras have been used to assist traditional dietary assessment methods for portion size estimations made by dietitians (image-assisted methods). Image-assisted approaches can supplement either dietary records or 24-h dietary recalls. In recent years, image-based approaches integrating application technology for mobile devices have been developed (image-based methods). Image-based approaches aim at capturing all eating occasions by images as the primary record of dietary intake, and therefore follow the methodology of food records. The present paper reviews several image-assisted and image-based methods, their benefits and challenges; followed by details on an image-based mobile food record. Mobile technology offers a wide range of feasible options for dietary assessment, which are easier to incorporate into daily routines. The presented studies illustrate that image-assisted methods can improve the accuracy of conventional dietary assessment methods by adding eating occasion detail via pictures captured by an individual (dynamic images). All of the studies reduced underreporting with the help of images compared with results with traditional assessment methods. Studies with larger sample sizes are needed to better delineate attributes with regards to age of user, degree of error and cost.

Good antibody responses usually follow infection with Campylobacter jejuni. A comparison of agglutination, complement fixation and immunofluorescence tests was done on 55 sera from 40 sporadic patients with diarrhoeal disease and positive cultures for C. jejuni. Results showed 82 % positive with immunofluorescence, 62 % by complement fixation but only 38 % by agglutination, using two reference strains COP and MEL as antigens. Overall 90 % of the 40 patients were positive by one or more serological tests. Paired sera from 15 patients showed a fourfold or greater rise in only five, confirming previous observations that antibody formation occurs early in the course of infection. Results also suggest that different test systems may be detecting antibodies of different specificities. Results confirm the value of serological tests, but further information on serotypes is required for selection of suitable reference strains.

During the postcumulus stage of solidification in layered intrusions, fluid dynamic phenomena play an important role in developing the textural and chemical characteristics of the cumulate rocks. One mechanism of adcumulus growth involves crystallization at the top of the cumulate pile where crystals are in direct contact with the magma reservoir. Convection in the chamber can enable adcumulus growth to occur to form a completely solid contact between cumulate and magma. Another important process may involve compositional convection in which light differentiated melt released by intercumulus crystallization is continually replaced by denser melt from the overlying magma reservoir. This process favours adcumulus growth and can allow adcumulus growth within the pore space of the cumulate pile. Calculations indicate that this process could reduce residual porosities to a few percent in large layered intrusions, but could not form pure monomineralic rocks. Intercumulus melt may also be replaced by more primitive melt during episodes of magma chamber replenishment. Dense magma, emplaced over a cumulate pile containing lower density differentiated melt may sink several metres into the underlying pile in the form of fingers. Reactions between melt and matrix may lead to changes in mineral compositions, mineral textures and whole rock isotope compositions. Another important mechanism for forming adcumulate rocks is compaction, in which the imbalance of the hydrostatic and lithostatic pressures in the cumulate pile causes the crystalline matrix to deform and intercumulus melt to be expelled. For cumulate layers from 10 to 1000 metres in thickness, compaction can reduce porosities to very low values (< 1%) and form monomineralic rocks. The characteristic time-scale for such compaction is theoretically short compared to the time required to solidify a large layered intrusion. During compaction changes of mineral compositions and texture may occur as moving melts interact with the surrounding matrix. Both compaction and compositional convection can be interrupted by solidification in the pore spaces. Compositional convection will only occur if the Rayleigh number is larger than 40, if the residual melt becomes lower in density, and the convective velocity exceeds the solidification velocity (measured by the rate of crystal accumulation in the chamber). Orthocumulates are thus more likely to form in rapidly cooled intrusions where residual melt is frozen into the pore spaces before it can be expelled by compaction or replaced by convection.

When a suspension of small particles is overlain by a clear fluid whose density is greater than that of the interstitial fluid, but less than that of the bulk suspension, the settling of the dense suspended particles can lead to vigorous convection in the overlying fluid. This novel situation is investigated experimentally and theoretically. A sharp interface is observed between the convecting upper region and a stagnant lower region in which there is unimpeded sedimentation at low Reynolds number. There is no transport of fluid from the upper region into the lower, though there is mixing of both buoyant fluid and entrained particles from the lower region into the upper. The interface between the two regions is found to descend at a constant velocity. Systematic laboratory measurements have determined how this velocity depends on the densities of the layers and the distributions of settling velocities of the particles. A theoretical description is developed which calculates the evolution of the density of the lower region due to differential sedimentation of polydisperse particles. Buoyancy arguments based on the calculated density profile are used to place upper and lower bounds on the amount of particle entrainment into the upper layer and on the rate of fall of the interface between the convecting and sedimenting regions. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental observations. The analysis of the interaction between convection and sedimentation in the system considered here may be particularly relevant to the description of evolving crystal-rich layers in magma chambers and of silt-laden outflow from rivers, and has a wide range of other industrial, environmental and geological applications.

Semi-insulating (SI) 6H-SiC boules up to 110mm in diameter have been grown by Physical Vapor Transport (PVT). SI properties have been achieved by vanadiumc compensation, which resulted in the room temperature electrical resistivity exceeding 2×1011ωcm. Low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL) data shows the presence of the deep intrinsic defect level UD-1 in addition to V4+. The nitrogen-bound exciton (NBE) luminescence is weak in heavily vanadium compensated 6H-SiC.

II-VI, Inc. is a commercial supplier of high-quality SiC substrates (including 2-inch and 3-inch diameter) for RF and power applications to the US market. Semi-insulating 6H-SiC single crystals, doped with vanadium and undoped (vanadium-free), as well as ntype 4H crystals have been grown using the PVT and Advanced PVT (APVT) growth techniques. The APVT process incorporates insitu synthesis and growth of of SiC crystal from Si and C precursors.
Grown 6H-SiC and 4H-SiC crystals have been extensively characterized with respect to their purity, crystal quality and electrical properties. COREMA resistivity maps demonstrate that V-compensated boules exhibited axially and radially uniform resistivity around 1011 ω.cm at room temperature. Undoped (V-free) wafers contained residual boron and nitrogen at levels below 1016 atoms/cm3, and demonstrated semi-insulating properties (resistivity between 106 and 1011 ω.cm) as a result of compensation by native point defects with deep levels in the bandgap. The undoped semi-insulating crystals grown by APVT contained boron and nitrogen at 1.9ω1015 cm−3 and 3.8.1015 cm−3, respectively.
High-quality 2-inch SiC wafers exhibited micropipe densities on the order of 10 cm−2 and dislocation density on the order of 104 cm−2.

The present report is drastically shorter and, therefore, different in form from previous reports. While galactic research has increased considerably in recent years, the financial situation in the IAU made it necessary to reduce the size of the reports to half their previous size. This obliged us to adopt an almost telegraphic style in our report. However, an extended version of the report, including also the necessary references, will be published by the University of Thessaloniki and distributed to members of Commission 33. Any other interested astronomer may write to ask for a copy.
The report has been prepared by G. Contopoulos (Sections I, V, VI) and S. McCuskey (Sections II, III, IV). In our work we have been helped by Drs Kerr (radio astronomy) and Haradze (Russian contributions). Dr Elvius has written the Report of the Committee “Selected Areas”.
