In the USA, as many as 20 % of recruits sustain stress fractures during basic training. In addition, approximately one-third of female recruits develop Fe deficiency upon completion of training. Fe is a cofactor in bone collagen formation and vitamin D activation, thus we hypothesised Fe deficiency may be contributing to altered bone microarchitecture and mechanics during 12-weeks of increased mechanical loading. Three-week old female Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to one of four groups: Fe-adequate sedentary, Fe-deficient sedentary, Fe-adequate exercise and Fe-deficient exercise. Exercise consisted of high-intensity treadmill running (54 min 3×/week). After 12-weeks, serum bone turnover markers, femoral geometry and microarchitecture, mechanical properties and fracture toughness and tibiae mineral composition and morphometry were measured. Fe deficiency increased the bone resorption markers C-terminal telopeptide type I collagen and tartate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRAcP 5b). In exercised rats, Fe deficiency further increased bone TRAcP 5b, while in Fe-adequate rats, exercise increased the bone formation marker procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide. In the femur, exercise increased cortical thickness and maximum load. In the tibia, Fe deficiency increased the rate of bone formation, mineral apposition and Zn content. These data show that the femur and tibia structure and mechanical properties are not negatively impacted by Fe deficiency despite a decrease in tibiae Fe content and increase in serum bone resorption markers during 12-weeks of high-intensity running in young growing female rats.

Twin 5-month seasonal forecast experiments are performed to predict the September 2018 mean and minimum ice extent using the fully coupled Navy Earth System Prediction Capability (ESPC). In the control run, ensemble forecasts are initialized from the operational US Navy Global Ocean Forecasting System (GOFS) 3.1 but do not assimilate ice thickness data. Another set of forecasts are initialized from the same GOFS 3.1 fields but with sea ice thickness derived from CryoSat-2 (CS2). The Navy ESPC ensemble mean September 2018 minimum sea ice extent initialized with GOFS 3.1 ice thickness was over-predicted by 0.68 M km2 (5.27 M km2) vs the ensemble forecasts initialized with CS2 ice thickness that had an error of 0.40 M km2 (4.99 M km2), a 43% reduction in error. The September mean integrated ice edge error shows a 18% improvement for the Pan-Arctic with the CS2 data vs the control forecasts. Comparison against upward looking sonar ice thickness in the Beaufort Sea reveals a lower bias and RMSE with the CS2 forecasts at all three moorings. Ice concentration at these locations is also improved, but neither set of forecasts show ice free conditions as observed at moorings A and D.

Summary
Sea ice APS evaluation builds on techniques developed for other applications, but presents some additional challenges due to the nature of sea ice itself and observational limitations. While APS predict ice conditions as continuous, sometimes bounded quantities, verifying observations may only be available as categorical quantities, which necessitates the use of contingency tables. Evaluation of continuous scalars, such as ice concentration and thickness, uses common statistical measures such as bias and variance. Sea ice velocity and ice edge require specialized evaluation approaches which account for their spatial characteristics. Several aspects of sea ice evaluation practice remain as challenges for future developments in sea ice and evaluation research.

Summary
A number of sea ice automated prediction systems are currently providing operational output to national ice service organizations. The Los Alamos CICE sea ice model is widely used in these systems but there is more variety in other areas, such as ocean forcing and model initialization. RIPS is a regional implementation of CICE that supports the CIS and includes a sophisticated 3DVar data assimilation system and a number of other innovations. GIOPS is a global ice-ocean prediction system that has been developed in close collaboration with Mercator-Ocean and satisfies a growing need in Canada for a multi-purpose global marine core service. TOPAZ is the Arctic regional component of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service and uses the HYCOM ocean model and LIM sea ice model with an Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) data assimilation system. The ACNFS/GOFS system supports the NIC and its global mandate using the CICE sea ice model and the HyCom ocean model. CanSIPS targets Canadian marine clients by providing extended range forecasts using of an global ensemble fully coupled atmosphere-ice-ocean model.

Over the past 10 years, heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) have progressed to where integrated circuit (IC) products are being sold and foundry services are being commercially offered utilizing gallium arsenide (GaAs) based technology. We will discuss, here, an alternative HBT technology based on indium phosphide (InP). While this technology is less mature than its GaAs counterpart, it offers several attractive benefits in comparison with GaAs. These benefits are provided through several key material properties of InP and ternary compound semiconductors, eg. gallium indium arsenide (GaInAs), grown on the InP. We review the status of this npn HBT technology and present performance results which illustrate the benefits of the technology with respect to electronic applications. Finally, we present measured reliability data for this technology which shows outstanding projected lifetimes.
