A new protocol has been devised for determining elastic properties of natural biocomposites in the form of bivalve shells under wet and dry conditions. Four-point bending on shell slices of Mytilus edulis, Ensis siliqua, and Pecten maximus give generally lower and more reliable values of Young’s modulus, E, than those in the literature from three-point bending, due to the more even distribution of strain. Finite element analysis of the prismatic microstructure of Pinna nobilis, obtained by X-ray tomography, shows that values of E ≈ 20 GPa can be understood in terms of the real microstructure containing a small proportion of organic matrix phase with E ≈ 1 GPa and a dominant proportion of calcite with E ≈ 90 GPa. Higher values of E obtained by nanoindentation give results which are biased toward the properties of the carbonate phase rather than of the biocomposite as a whole.

Summary
The midtwentiethcentury folklore scholar Stith Thompson lists motif K2111 as “Potiphar's Wife” and describes it as follows: “A woman makes vain overtures to a man and then accuses him of attempting to force her.” This motif is very widely known, appearing not just in Genesis and the Koran (where it derives its name), but in ancient texts from across the world. It remains a mainstay of Western storytelling, appearing in narratives as disparate as Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers, Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, and Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl. Less entertainingly, it also appears whenever the subject of acquaintance rape is discussed in the American media. To some segment of the populace, it is both possible and likely that women who accuse men of rape are doing so out of vengeful motivations— and this perception has been apparently validated by such highprofile cases as the Tawana Brawley case in 1987, the Duke lacrosse case in 2006, and the story published by Rolling Stone in 2014 under the title “A Rape on Campus.”
The academic study of literature has largely moved beyond simply identifying motifs in narrative, yet the popularity of websites like TVtropes.org suggests that ordinary audiences still find this form of analysis useful and accessible. In this essay, I will suggest that the analysis of motifs should still be a tool for medievalists in the classroom. Reading and analyzing Marie de France's Lanval in the light of literary motifs can help our students examine elements of American rape culture. Central to the plot of Lanval is the queen's false accusation that the male protagonist has made sexual advances to her— a charge which is patently unbelievable not only to the audience of the poem, but also to the other characters in the story. In the context of literary study, the queen's accusations take on a more violent subtext, reflecting the Potiphar's Wife motif. My central suggestion in this essay is that the motif reflects one way of making sense of a real epistemological dilemma. Moreover, I will argue that this motif performs a certain sort of cultural work, allowing readers to enter into a fantasy inversion of normal gendered power dynamics that allows true allegations to be safely ignored or discredited.

The occurrence of pearls in the ‘true’ oysters, the Ostreioidea, is poorly documented despite being the most produced mollusc species in the world. Oysters of the Crassostrea genus were collected in two different sites in southern Portugal where both Crassostrea angulata and C. gigas are present, namely in: (1) the Ria Formosa lagoon where pearls were not observed (N = 446); and (2) the Guadiana estuary where pearls were found in 12 out of the 798 oysters analysed. The pearls were located mainly at the edge of the right mantle lobe in the inhalant chamber and their maximum length ranged from 0.9 to 5.5 mm. Almost all the pearls had a white-cream colouration with the exception of two pearls that had a black-brown colour. X-ray diffraction analysis of one pearl showed that it was entirely calcitic with no traces of either aragonite or vaterite. The pearls observed were therefore non-nacreous pearls. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a diversity of microstructures including prismatic, foliae-like sheets and blocky textures, i.e. highly reminiscent of the host oyster shell microstructures. Parasites (e.g. parasitic copepods, Haplosporidium-like plasmodia) and signs of diseases (e.g. foot disease) were observed in some of the oysters analysed, but they were not associated with the occurrence of pearls. The present work is one of the few studies on the occurrence of natural pearls in ‘true’ oysters and to our knowledge the first description of their microstructure by SEM.

Using the AMR code ENZO we are simulating the formation of massive star clusters within turbulent Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs). Here we discuss the simulations from the first stages of building realistic turbulent GMCs, to accurate star formation, and ultimately comprehensive feedback. These simulations aim to build a better understanding of how stars affect GMCs, helping to answer the questions of how long GMCs live and why only a small fraction of the GMC gas becomes stars.

The growth, development, chemical composition and nutritive value of sunflower (cv. Fransol), was examined from the flower-bud (12 July) to milky-ripe seed (late September) stages. Dry-matter yield increased from 2·1 to 14·1 t/ha over the period. Drymatter content was low (100–110 g/kg) up to flowering, early in August, and then increased to 193 g/kg. Crude protein content declined after flowering and ether extract values were low throughout the period. Organic-matter digestibility in vitro and derived metabolizable energy values declined rapidly with the onset of flowering. Gross energy values, calculated from the proximate constituents, increased to 17·6 MJ/kg D.M. at the end of the period. Calcium to phosphorus ratios varied from 5·6 to 7·4:1.
Sunflower was cut and fed to eight Friesian heifers over 3 weeks from the onset of flowering. Average daily D.M. intake was 63·5 g/kg W0·76 and the organic-matter digestibility was 0·684. Average live-weight gain was 0·79 kg/day.
Fresh sunflower was successfully ensiled without an additive 2 weeks after flowering and the silage (pH 4·0) was fed to three cross-bred wethers in a feeding trial. The organic-matter digestibility was 0·649, the metabolizable energy 8·0 MJ/kg D.M. and the average D.M. intake 6·73 g/kg W0·75. In a metabolism trial, with four fistulated sheep, the organic-matter digestibility was 0·718, the metabolizable energy 9·4 MJ/kg D.M. and the D.M. intake 43·1 g/kg W0·75. Rumen pH decreased and total volatile fatty acid concentration increased markedly within 2 h of feeding the silage. Molar proportions of acetic and propionic acid (0·539 and 0·381), 1 h after feeding, were typical of cereal-based diets. Ammonia-nitrogen concentration increased to a maximum of 216 mg/1 within 2 h of feeding.
The good yield and animal performance from fresh sunflower make it a possible annual crop for zero-grazing in late summer in northern Britain. Satisfactory results from feeding sunflower silage suggest that the crop has potential for ensilage if the problem of effluent can be overcome.

The marked increase in predation pressure at the close of the Palaeozoic must have had a profound effect on the evolution of the bivalves (Vermeij, 1983). In particular the epifaunal bivalves were extremely vulnerable to attack by the major molluscivore groups; fish, asteroids, crustaceans and boring and wedging gastropods.
The range of techniques employed by these molluscivores ranges from crushing and prising to boring and the range of effective defensive measures is correspondingly broad. Different methods of attack require different and, perhaps conflicting, defensive strategies. The bivalves undergo a massive radiation at the beginning of the Mesozoic, a time coincident with the increase in predation pressure (with the important exception of the boring gastropods which evolved much later in the Cretaceous). Given the range of methods of attack and the myriad of possible prey responses it is possible to interpret almost any change in life habit or morphology happening at that time as defensive. Temporal coincidence is not sufficient and such interpretations should be supported with experimental data from predation on Recent malacofauna.
Nevertheless, a number of bivalve life habits may be interpreted as having evolved in response to predation pressure. Inevitably certain taxa are prevented from evolving particular defence mechanisms by the constraints of their body plans. The aim of this paper is to explore the different evolutionary pathways followed by different clades in terms of their constructional potentialities and constraints.
