We recently reported on the radio-frequency attenuation length of cold polar ice at Summit Station, Greenland, based on bi-static radar measurements of radio-frequency bedrock echo strengths taken during the summer of 2021. Those data also allow studies of (a) the relative contributions of coherent (such as discrete internal conducting layers with sub-centimeter transverse scale) vs incoherent (e.g. bulk volumetric) scattering, (b) the magnitude of internal layer reflection coefficients, (c) limits on signal propagation velocity asymmetries (‘birefringence’) and (d) limits on signal dispersion in-ice over a bandwidth of ~100 MHz. We find that (1) attenuation lengths approach 1 km in our band, (2) after averaging 10 000 echo triggers, reflected signals observable over the thermal floor (to depths of ~1500 m) are consistent with being entirely coherent, (3) internal layer reflectivities are ≈–60$\to$–70 dB, (4) birefringent effects for vertically propagating signals are smaller by an order of magnitude relative to South Pole and (5) within our experimental limits, glacial ice is non-dispersive over the frequency band relevant for neutrino detection experiments.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) has been a leader in weed science research covering topics ranging from the development and use of integrated weed management (IWM) tactics to basic mechanistic studies, including biotic resistance of desirable plant communities and herbicide resistance. ARS weed scientists have worked in agricultural and natural ecosystems, including agronomic and horticultural crops, pastures, forests, wild lands, aquatic habitats, wetlands, and riparian areas. Through strong partnerships with academia, state agencies, private industry, and numerous federal programs, ARS weed scientists have made contributions to discoveries in the newest fields of robotics and genetics, as well as the traditional and fundamental subjects of weed–crop competition and physiology and integration of weed control tactics and practices. Weed science at ARS is often overshadowed by other research topics; thus, few are aware of the long history of ARS weed science and its important contributions. This review is the result of a symposium held at the Weed Science Society of America’s 62nd Annual Meeting in 2022 that included 10 separate presentations in a virtual Weed Science Webinar Series. The overarching themes of management tactics (IWM, biological control, and automation), basic mechanisms (competition, invasive plant genetics, and herbicide resistance), and ecosystem impacts (invasive plant spread, climate change, conservation, and restoration) represent core ARS weed science research that is dynamic and efficacious and has been a significant component of the agency’s national and international efforts. This review highlights current studies and future directions that exemplify the science and collaborative relationships both within and outside ARS. Given the constraints of weeds and invasive plants on all aspects of food, feed, and fiber systems, there is an acknowledged need to face new challenges, including agriculture and natural resources sustainability, economic resilience and reliability, and societal health and well-being.

To manage jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica), growers need an action threshold decision aid to assist them in deciding when to rotate to a spring crop instead of growing winter wheat (Triticum aestivum). A study was conducted in Washington from 1992 to 1995 to predict winter wheat yield loss based on a jointed goatgrass population in the previous year's winter wheat crop. To describe the relationship between jointed goatgrass density in year 1 and the resulting winter wheat yield loss in year 2, data were fitted to a rectangular hyperbolic model. First year jointed goatgrass densities in winter wheat of 1 to 5 plants/m2 led to a second year winter wheat yield loss of 3 to 30%. Yield loss was greater in a dry year than in a normal to wet year. To initiate an action threshold for jointed goatgrass successfully, growers need to incorporate data from this study with their knowledge of yield potential, price dockage of the subsequent winter wheat crop, and profitability of alternative spring crop rotations.

Summary
Introduction
This chapter examines the possible ramifications of migration (Paleolithic versus Neolithic) on the mitochondrial gene pool of Europe. In the anthropological literature, there has been much debate on the relative contributions of Paleolithic and Neolithic populations to modern Europeans; a debate which continues to center around two competing models (Balaresque et al., 2010; Battaglia et al., 2009; Sjodin and Francois, 2011). The Neolithic demic diffusion model (DDM) holds that the majority of genetic variation found in modern Europeans is the result of bands of migrating farmers spreading their technology (and genes) into Europe with the advent of agriculture (Ammerman and Cavalli-Sforza, 1984). Alternatively, the cultural diffusion model (CDM) asserts that agricultural knowledge spread into Europe 10 000 years ago but people did not, so the transfer of technology occurred without migration and the gene pool of modern Europeans is primarly of non-Neolithic origin (Novelletto, 2007).
Genetic evidence has been used to support both models. A southeast to northwest cline in the distribution of classical markers across Europe has been interpreted as a genetic signature of the DDM model (Cavalli-Sforza et al., 1994). Similar clines have been noted for other molecular systems and interpreted as evidence of “directional population expansion” (Casalotti et al., 1999; Chikhi et al., 1998:9055). Advocates of the cultural diffusion model maintain that the Paleolithic expansion into Europe occurred from the same region as the Neolithic expansion, so that the cline in genetic variation might reflect a Paleolithic signal (Barbujani et al., 1998). Y-chromosome analyses reveal that haplotype R1*M173 appears to indicate an expansion event after the Last Glacial Maximum (Wells et al., 2001), and a “high degree of non-Neolithic ancestry” in populations of Iberia (Flores et al., 2004). Examination of Y-chromosome diversity in southeastern Europe suggests that the spread of agriculture overlaps with the expansion of indigenous European haplogroup I*M423 (Battaglia et al., 2009).

Steam-distilled floral oils (essences) from several species of Theobroma(Sterculiaceae) (T. cacao Linneaus, T. simiarum Donn. Smith, T. mammosum Cuatr. & Leon, and T. speciosum Willd.) were tested using McPhail traps, in an abandoned Costa Rican cocoa plantation to determine their levels of attraction for flying insects. In each of the three bioassays (two successive dry seasons and one intervening rainy season), the traps were inoculated with floral scents at 1, 10, and 100 ppm, while controls were inoculated with a 10% solution of chloroform solvent in distilled water. Of a total of 223 Diptera captured in all three bioassays, only 5% were found in the controls, indicating attraction to the floral oil. About 72% of all Diptera captured were Cecidomyiidae, of which three species, Mycodiplosis ligulata Gagne, Aphodiplosis triangularas (Felt.) and Ledomyia sp., comprised 59% of the total. Eighty-eight per cent of all midges captured were females. Only 7% of the total were known cocoa-pollinating midges of Ceratopogonidae, and all of these were females. Sixteen per cent were Phoridae, known pollinators of the allied genus Herrania in Costa Rica. Although the chemical composition of floral oils varies greatly among the species of Theobroma, no discernible differences were found in the attraction of midges to floral oils tested. While floral fragrances in Theobroma species may represent a generalized adaptation for dipteran pollination, small numbers of several species of Trigona bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponinae) were also attracted to the floral oils.

Floral fragrance oils related to pollination were studied in three species of Theobroma and one Herrania species (Sterculiaceae) in Costa Rica. This study was prompted by field observations that floral odours and floral visitors are markedly different between Theobroma and Herrania, as well as between species of Theobroma.
Floral fragrance in cultivated T. cacao consisted of 78 components, primarily saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, with 1-pentadecene the major constituent followed by n−pentadecane. The distribution of 1-pentadecene was similar at 0900 hr (43.6%), 1130 hr (52.5%) and 2000 hr (51.1%) sampling times but only 1.2% at 1600 hr. The ratio of 1-pentadecene to n−pentadecane in the 1600 hr sample, approximately 1:6, contrasted with a 3:1 ratio at 0900 and 1130 and a 6:1 ratio at 2000 hr. The greatest concentration of volatiles was found in the 1130 hr sample, with 0900 and 2000 hr concentrations being essentially equal and intermediate between the high (1130 hr) and the low (1600 hr).
Of the 58 compounds detected in T. mammosum steam distillate at 0815 hr, an array of linalool oxides accounted for 12.5% of the oil followed by isoeugenol (8.9%). Saturated hydrocarbons were also present but, unlike T. cacao, n-tricosane was the major hydrocarbon (12.2%). The major constituents of T. mammosum oil clearly distinguish this species from T. cacao.
A markedly different profile of major floral volatiles was found in T. simiarum: major constituents included the monoterpenoids citral, geraniol, nerol, and citronellol. Unlike the oily, hydrocarbon fragrance of T. cacao and T. mammosum, T. simiarum floral fragrance is citrus-like both in the field and laboratory. Our fragrance studies suggest considerable evolutionary divergence within Theobroma.
The floral fragrance of H. cuatrecasana contained volatiles characteristic of dipteran-pollinated plant species. Unusual volatiles found in Herrania fragrance included iridomyrmecin, guaiol, and other azulenic derivatives. No such monoterpenoids and bicyclic sesquiterpenoids (with the exception of longifolene, 0.1%, in T. simiarum) were found in Theobroma. The profiles of floral fragrance chemotaxonomically support the exclusion of Herrania spp. from the genus Theobroma.

Floral characteristics related to pollination were studied in four species of Theobroma and one species of Herrania (Sterculiaceae) in Costa Rica. Anthesis was complete in T. cacao, T. simiarum, T. speciosum, and T. mammosum at 0615 hr following an extended period of floral development throughout the night. Flowers of both T. cacao and Herrania cuatrecusana were fully open by dawn and pollen sacs dehisced throughout the morning hours. Stigma and style receptivity, assessed by hydrogen peroxide tests, were high throughout the morning and early afternoon in T. cacao. Bagged flowers resulted in no fruit-set. When petal ligules were experimentally removed there was no change in rates of flower abortion or total numbers of aborted flowers, tentatively suggesting that these structures play little or no role in attracting pollinators. Both Theobroma and Herrania flowers possess ultraviolet light reflectance'absorbance patterns which may play a role in pollinator attraction. Uptake of neutral red stain in T. cacao and T. simiarum showed scattered glandular activity on petals and sepals, perhaps indicating location of nectaries or other secretory organs. Conspicuous glandular trichomes on the ovary, on the lower third of the style, and in a conspicuous “basal ring” between petals and sepals (most pronounced and colorful in species other than T. cacao) may be sources of both floral attractant and reward.
Differences in floral biology among Theobroma and Herrania species suggest divergence in pollination strategies. The data presented are discussed in terms of plant-pollinator specializations in the New World tropics.
