Objective. The efficacy of individualized, community-based physical activity as an adjunctive smoking cessation treatment to enhance long-term smoking cessation rates was evaluated for the Lifestyle Enhancement Program (LEAP). Methods. The study was a two-arm, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial. All participants (n = 392) received cessation counseling and a nicotine patch and were randomized to physical activity (n = 199; YMCA membership and personalized exercise programming from a health coach) or an equal contact frequency wellness curriculum (n = 193). Physical activity treatment was individualized and flexible (with each participant selecting types of activities and intensity levels and being encouraged to exercise at the YMCA and at home, as well as to use “lifestyle” activity). The primary outcome (biochemically verified prolonged abstinence at 7-weeks (end of treatment) and 6- and 12-months postcessation) and secondary outcomes (7-day point prevalent tobacco abstinence (PPA), total minutes per week of leisure time physical activity and strength training) were assessed at baseline, 7 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months. Results. Prolonged abstinence in the physical activity and wellness groups was 19.6% and 25.4%, respectively, at 7-weeks, 15.1% and 16.6% at 6-months, and 14.1% and 17.1% at 12 months (all between-group P values >0.18). Similarly, PPA rates did not differ significantly between groups at any follow-up. Change from baseline leisure-time activity plus strength training increased significantly in the physical activity group at 7 weeks (P = 0.04). Across treatment groups, an increase in the number of minutes per week in strength training from baseline to 7 weeks predicted prolonged abstinence at 12 months (P ≤ 0.001). Further analyses revealed that social support, fewer years smoked, and less temptation to smoke were associated with prolonged abstinence over 12 months in both groups. Conclusions. Community-based physical activity programming, delivered as adjunctive treatment with behavioral/pharmacological cessation treatment, did not improve long-term quit rates compared to adjunctive wellness counseling plus behavioral/pharmacological cessation treatment. This trial is registered with https://beta.clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT00403312, registration no. NCT00403312.

Evidence of complex and widespread occupations during the Middle Preclassic (1000–350 b.c.) have been identified throughout the Northern Maya Lowlands and are associated with both Mamom and pre-Mamom ceramics. Beyond typological information based on the visual examination of paste, slip, and surface treatment, archaeologists know little about the technology or economics of pottery production and exchange of this period. In this study, we analyze Middle Preclassic ceramics from four sites in northwest Yucatan, using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to determine the chemical variation that exists between and within different ceramic production areas. The analysis indicates that production occurred locally by the late Middle Preclassic (700–350 b.c.), and that the earliest pottery produced in the Northern Maya Lowlands, at the sites of Komchen and Kiuic, was compositionally linked to later phases of production. This means that the first ceramic complexes of the Northern Lowlands were locally produced and not the result of migrants bringing pottery from elsewhere. The study reveals it is possible to identify the origin of Middle Preclassic ceramics by their chemical signature and that compositional variation existed at the site level over time.

Summary
The multi-year research effort in this volume has demonstrated that (1) similar challenges are faced by all SERIDAS rivers, (2) problem recognition varies widely across basins, and (3) response strategies are not sufficiently grounded in the long-term goal of river sustainability. We recommend that river managers and stakeholders follow these guidelines: Determine the river’s dependable yield – the water supply, averaged over the period of the most severe drought experienced in the historical record. Use the dependable yield to define and implement a river management strategy that carefully balances human and ecological needs in the basin. To meet human needs, do more with less – practice water conservation. This is the best obtainable strategy for redefining and maintaining river sustainability.

Summary
The Rio Grande marks the border between the United States and Mexico, which makes its management particularly complex. A century of engineering and binational governance has shaped the region; today there are multiple reservoirs, diversion channels, and irrigation canals. International and national river managers consider challenges from reservoir sedimentation, population growth, and land use change. Climate change, on the other hand, is barely addressed. Managers must plan for a Rio Grande that by mid-century will have lost 40–50 percent of current water levels. Urban population will have doubled. Irrigated agriculture and cities will continue to use the bulk of available water. The most promising response to meet human and ecological water needs with reduced dependable yield is conservation. To address water scarcity, IBWC/CILA should develop a sustainability plan that balances reduced dependable yield with human and ecological needs. Progress should be reviewed and necessary changes to water allocations be negotiated at 5-year intervals. Irrigation districts, municipal utilities, and environmental stakeholders should work with IBWC/CILA to develop drought management for their sub-basins.

Summary
A reservoir is a replacement of a segment of the river with a watercourse that is quite different, a larger, more quiescent water body with different water quality and capable of stratification. This chapter describes design and functions of river reservoirs. The main challenges faced by SERIDAS reservoirs are highlighted. Special attention is given to a reservoir’s dependable yield, which can be maintained constantly without failure throughout the time history of reservoir storage. All reservoirs act as sediment traps and will eventually silt up unless special actions are taken to manage sediment. Reservoirs significantly alter the hydrology of the river downstream from the dam and can affect its water quality and its ecosystem. With increases in population and agriculture, water demands will increase, exacerbated by climate changes. Skillful management will be needed to temper conflicts that arise over how reservoirs will be operated under situations of incompatible objectives.

Introduction:
Elevated rates of metabolic disturbances and shorter life expectancy due to cardiovascular complications are well known in individuals on antipsychotic medication. Recent literature highlights the use of prompts and educational interventions to improve physical health monitoring.
Aims and objectives:This audit aimed to review whether young people in the EIP Service receiving antipsychotic medication had regular physical monitoring in accordance with the Trust's recommendations and suggested ways to improve it.
Methods:The Physical Health Monitoring Record developed by the Medicines Management Committee recommends that patients on antipsychotic medication should have a full Physical Examination at Baseline and every 6 months thereafter. Blood tests, drug screens and ECGs should also be done at baseline and repeated on an annual basis. Electronic Patient Records of young people known to the Newcastle EIP Service over a 12-month period were reviewed to complete the audit tool captured data on type and duration of treatment, baseline and follow-up monitoring.
Results:Only 55% (N = 11) received baseline monitoring. During the treatment continuation phase, 82% adhered to the recommended annual blood tests, but physical examinations, drug screens and ECGs were not done. At the annual psychiatric reviews, only 64% of young people had physical monitoring requests sent to primary care.
Conclusions:Young people receiving antipsychotic medication were not being monitored in accordance with Trust's recommendations. Wider circulation of the recommendations and improved communication with primary care physicians could improve monitoring. Incorporating a prompt within the Electronic Records with annual reminders would be a useful way forward.

Background
There is strong evidence that people born in winter and in spring have a small increased risk of schizophrenia. As this ‘season of birth’ effect underpins some of the most influential hypotheses concerning potentially modifiable risk exposures, it is important to exclude other possible explanations for the phenomenon.
MethodsHere we sought to determine whether the season of birth effect reflects gene-environment confounding rather than a pathogenic process indexing environmental exposure. We directly measured, in 136 538 participants from the UK Biobank (UKBB), the burdens of common schizophrenia risk alleles and of copy number variants known to increase the risk for the disorder, and tested whether these were correlated with a season of birth.
ResultsNeither genetic measure was associated with season or month of birth within the UKBB sample.
ConclusionsAs our study was highly powered to detect small effects, we conclude that the season of birth effect in schizophrenia reflects a true pathogenic effect of environmental exposure.

Introduction
The Institute of Medicine recommended the advance of innovation and entrepreneurship training programs within the Clinical & Translational Science Award (CTSA) program; however, there remains a gap in adoption by CTSA institutes. The University of Michigan’s Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research and Fast Forward Medical Innovation (FFMI) partnered to develop a pilot program designed to teach CTSA hubs how to implement innovation and entrepreneurship programs at their home institutions.
Materials and methodsThe program provided a 2-day onsite training experience combined with observation of an ongoing course focused on providing biomedical innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurial training to a medical academician audience (FFMI fastPACE).
ResultsAll 9 participating CTSA institutes reported a greater connection to biomedical research commercialization resources. Six launched their own version of the FFMI fastPACE course or modified existing programs. Two reported greater collaboration with their technology transfer offices.
ConclusionThe FFMI fastPACE course and training program may be suitable for CTSA hubs looking to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship within their institutions and across their innovation ecosystems.

There is a broad set of human beliefs, attitudes and behaviours around the issue of magical animals, referring to both mythical animals not recognized by science and extant animals that are recognized by science but have magical properties. This is a broad issue ranging from spiritual beliefs around mythical animals living in Malagasy forests, to cultural heritage associated with the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland. Beliefs and behaviours around magical animals can have positive and negative impacts on biodiversity conservation goals. Yet, so far, the discipline of conservation biology has not adequately considered magical animals, neglecting to account for the broader knowledge from outside the natural sciences on this issue, and taking a narrow, utilitarian approach to how magical animals should be managed, without necessarily considering the broader impacts on conservation goals or ethics. Here we explore how magical animals can influence conservation goals, how conservation biology and practice has thought about magical animals, and some of the limitations of current approaches, particularly the failure to consider magical animals as part of wider systems of belief and culture. We argue that magical animals and their implications for conservation merit wider consideration.

In a recent essay, Harker and coauthors stated that considering herbicide resistance as a wicked problem “without clear causes or solutions” ignores what weed scientists know about the biology and management of herbicide-resistant weeds. In this response, we argue that this misrepresents what is meant by “wicked” and that the wicked problem concept is valuable in understanding the multifaceted nature of herbicide resistance as a human-caused phenomenon.

Intraspecific genetic variation may contribute significantly to invasiveness and control problems, but has been characterized to date in relatively few invasive weed species. We examined 56 intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) loci in 220 individuals from 11 invading populations of yellow toadflax sampled across five western states. All populations showed high levels of genetic diversity. Estimated values for Shannon's diversity measure ranged from 0.217 to 0.388, and for expected heterozygosity from 0.178 to 0.260. Nei's total gene diversity index (HT), on the basis of all individuals across all populations, was 0.267. Partitioning of genetic variance using analysis of molecular variance revealed 1.7% of genetic variation among regional population groups, 29.1% among populations within groups, and 69.2% within populations, consistent with expectations for an outcrossing species but suggesting little geographic differentiation. Pairs of adjacent individuals identical at all ISSR loci that appeared to be ramets of a single clone were detected in only one population. This indicates that patch expansion in yellow toadflax is driven more by sexual reproduction via seed than by rhizomatous clonal spread, at least at the spatial scale of sampling for this study. Eight populations had significant values for Mantel's R at P = 0.05, suggesting some fine-scale positive genetic structuring, possibly from restricted gene flow. Population clustering on the basis of Nei's genetic distance between populations and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean did not reflect geographic location. It is likely that multiple introductions of this species have occurred across the Intermountain West, followed by extensive genetic recombination. High levels of genetic diversity within yellow toadflax populations pose management challenges, as already seen in reports of variable response to herbicide application and limited impacts of biocontrol agent releases.

Herbicides are the foundation of weed control in commercial crop-production systems. However, herbicide-resistant (HR) weed populations are evolving rapidly as a natural response to selection pressure imposed by modern agricultural management activities. Mitigating the evolution of herbicide resistance depends on reducing selection through diversification of weed control techniques, minimizing the spread of resistance genes and genotypes via pollen or propagule dispersal, and eliminating additions of weed seed to the soil seedbank. Effective deployment of such a multifaceted approach will require shifting from the current concept of basing weed management on single-year economic thresholds.
