When descriptive ecology meets physiology: a study in a South Atlantic rhodolith bed

This study presents two years of characterization of a warm temperate rhodolith bed in order to analyse how certain environmental changes influence the community ecology. The biomass of rhodoliths and associated species were analysed during this period and in situ experiments were conducted to evaluate the primary production, calcification and respiration of the dominant species of rhodoliths and epiphytes. The highest total biomass of rhodoliths occurred during austral winter. Lithothamnion crispatum was the most abundant rhodolith species in austral summer. Epiphytic macroalgae occurred only in January 2015, with Padina gymnospora being the most abundant. Considering associated fauna, the biomass of Mollusca increased from February 2015 to February 2016. Population densities of key reef fish species inside and around the rhodolith beds showed significant variations in time. The densities of grouper (carnivores/piscivores) increased in time, especially from 2015 to 2016. On the other hand, grunts (macroinvertebrate feeders) had a modest decrease over time (from 2014 to 2016). Other parameters such as primary production and calcification of L. crispatum were higher under enhanced irradiance, yet decreased in the presence of P. gymnospora. Community structure and physiological responses can be explained by the interaction of abiotic and biotic factors, which are driven by environmental changes over time. Biomass changes can indicate that herbivores play a role in limiting the growth of epiphytes, and this is beneficial to the rhodoliths because it decreases competition for environmental resources with fleshy algae.

A method for typing Haemophilus species is described, based on the analysis of genomic DNA from Haemophilus parainfluenzae. The DNA was extracted by a rapid method and digested with the restriction enzyme BamHI to provide a characteristic ‘fingerprint’. The pattern of fragments in the ranges 1–1·6 kb, 1·6–2 kb and 2–3 kb were used to produce a numerical profile of each isolate. In total 97 isolates were examined; 88 from throat swab material isolated from the 15 members of a British Antarctic Survey base and 9 type strains. Seventy-two of the 88 antarctic isolates were H. parainfluenzae and were found to be very diverse, comprising 41 identifiable strains with up to 5 strains being isolated from a single throat swab sample. There was evidence for both carriage and transmission within the isolated community. The technique provided a highly discriminatory method for characterizing Haemophilus strains which is suitable for epidemiological studies.
Paleoclimatic and paleogeographic implications of a lower Tertiary laterite (latosol) on the Iceland—Faeroe Ridge, North Atlantic region

A lower Tertiary lateritic paleosol resting on a plateau basalt was penetrated by drilling at DSDP Site 336 on the NE flank of the Iceland—Faeroe Ridge. The sea floor at the site is about 800 m below sea level and about 400 m below the generally smooth, flat and largely sediment-free top of the ridge. The paleosol is approximately 30 m thick and can be divided into four subunits, in ascending order, basaltic rubble, red clay with altered basaltic clasts, interlayered red and pale-orange clay, and red clay. The paleosol is overlain by about 300 m of marine mudstone of medial Eocene to medial late Oligocene age that was deposited in progressively deeper water through time. About 170 m of Pliocene and Pleistocene glacio-marine sediments unconformably overlie the Paleogene deposits.
In the lowest subunit of the paleosol, feldspar, pyroxene, magnetite and chlorite decrease in abundance abruptly upward and are replaced by montmorillonite and small amounts of hematite and goethite. At the contact between the second and third subunits of the paleosol, kaolinite becomes an important constituent and increases greatly in abundance upward. In the uppermost red clay subunit, kaolinite has completely replaced montmorillonite and the amount of hematite and goethite increases markedly. Within the paleosol subunits, the relative amounts of silicon, ferrous iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium decrease upward, whereas the amounts of aluminum, ferric iron, and titanium increase upward. The red and pale-orange clay subunit contains layers characterized by veinlet-like structures alternating with more massive layers. The veinlet network is thought to have developed by segregation of ferric iron and alumina as a result of chemical weathering of basalt and possibly thin overlying airfall tuffs.
The paleosol indicates a humid, warm climate and demonstrates that the Iceland-Faeroe Ridge was above sea level during the early Tertiary. The ridge formed the main part of the Thulean land bridge that permitted free migration of land mammals between North America-Greenland and Europe prior to late Eocene time. It developed during the early Tertiary break-up and rifting apart of North America-Greenland and Europe. Formerly situated over an active mantle plume or hot spot, the ridge subsequently subsided in late Eocene and Oligocene time, eventually permittingfree interchange of marine waters between the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. Basalts of the Iceland-Faeroe Ridge are simijar in age and character to other basalts of the North Atlantic early Tertiary igneous province on the Rockall and Voring Plateaus, northern Ireland, Scotland, the Faeroe Islands, East and West Greenland, and Baffin Island. Bauxite, lignite, and laterite associated with some of these basalt sequences, as well as vertebrate, plant, and microfossil remains, suggest a relatively uniform, warm, humid climate in the early Tertiary throughout the North Atlantic area and into the region of the Arctic Ocean.

During the postcumulus stage of solidification in layered intrusions, fluid dynamic phenomena play an important role in developing the textural and chemical characteristics of the cumulate rocks. One mechanism of adcumulus growth involves crystallization at the top of the cumulate pile where crystals are in direct contact with the magma reservoir. Convection in the chamber can enable adcumulus growth to occur to form a completely solid contact between cumulate and magma. Another important process may involve compositional convection in which light differentiated melt released by intercumulus crystallization is continually replaced by denser melt from the overlying magma reservoir. This process favours adcumulus growth and can allow adcumulus growth within the pore space of the cumulate pile. Calculations indicate that this process could reduce residual porosities to a few percent in large layered intrusions, but could not form pure monomineralic rocks. Intercumulus melt may also be replaced by more primitive melt during episodes of magma chamber replenishment. Dense magma, emplaced over a cumulate pile containing lower density differentiated melt may sink several metres into the underlying pile in the form of fingers. Reactions between melt and matrix may lead to changes in mineral compositions, mineral textures and whole rock isotope compositions. Another important mechanism for forming adcumulate rocks is compaction, in which the imbalance of the hydrostatic and lithostatic pressures in the cumulate pile causes the crystalline matrix to deform and intercumulus melt to be expelled. For cumulate layers from 10 to 1000 metres in thickness, compaction can reduce porosities to very low values (< 1%) and form monomineralic rocks. The characteristic time-scale for such compaction is theoretically short compared to the time required to solidify a large layered intrusion. During compaction changes of mineral compositions and texture may occur as moving melts interact with the surrounding matrix. Both compaction and compositional convection can be interrupted by solidification in the pore spaces. Compositional convection will only occur if the Rayleigh number is larger than 40, if the residual melt becomes lower in density, and the convective velocity exceeds the solidification velocity (measured by the rate of crystal accumulation in the chamber). Orthocumulates are thus more likely to form in rapidly cooled intrusions where residual melt is frozen into the pore spaces before it can be expelled by compaction or replaced by convection.

Larvae of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus will attach to thin (0·3–0·5 mm) slices of cattle skin and engorge on a partially denned medium at 35 °C. Forty-seven to 83% of the larvae had engorged by 8 days, and 51–71% of these moulted to nymphs. Tissue culture medium alone allowed little growth unless supplemented with dialysed, freeze dried bovine serum (7%, w/v). This medium could be further defined by substituting purified bovine serum albumin (Cohn fraction V) for the dialysed bovine serum. In one experiment, nymphs of Haemaphysalis longicornis engorged and later moulted to adults. Skin slices were used fresh or after freeze-drying and storing at − 25 °C. The possible uses of the culture method are discussed.

Larvae of Boophilus microplus were labelled with [32P] and used to study the rejection of larvae from British breed cattle with different levels of resistance. On animals of high resistance the loss of larvae due to grooming ranged from 9–54% during the first 24 h of infestation, and more time was spent grooming by these animals. Most of the grooming activity could be attributed to the presence of tick larvae and the presence of older tick stages did not increase the percentage of larvae lost. Grooming was directed to attached larvae and these could be removed. Animals of low resistance did not lose a significant number of larvae as a result of grooming, but all previously infested hosts lost a proportion of the larvae (18–39%) which could not be accounted for by grooming. This loss was greater than the total loss of larvae (11%) on animals not previously exposed to B. microplus.

After 24 h desiccation at 28–29 °C and approximately 50 % relative humidity about 70 % of B. microplus larvae drank sufficient solution containing 1·5 mCi of 32P per ml for their movements on the host to be followed with a portable G-M counter. Reduced viability of the labelled ticks could not be detected when they were kept for 24 h on the host and either allowed to feed or prevented from doing so. When feeding was continued for 72 h or when larvae were incubated for 3–4 weeks, adverse effects were found, the severity of which could not be directly related to the amount of 32P label. Desiccation, handling of larvae and exposure to radiation in the drinking solution may have contributed to their reduced viability.
Since resistance to the tick is manifest within the first 24 h after infestation labelled larvae could be used to compare development on different hosts during this time. Even after feeding for 72 h, larvae were more adversely affected by host resistance than by labelling damage.

Growth and behaviour of Boophilus microplus larvae on British breed cattle, with different resistance levels to the tick, were studied to elucidate the nature of resistance. On highly resistant animals, larval growth rate was slower for the first 3 days, but by day 4 they had attained the normal weight and the majority were subsequently able to moult.
Using phosphorus-32 labelled larvae, it was found that attachment times were shorter and more time was spent wandering on highly resistant animals during the first 16 h. On the second day, attachments had stabilized, but more detachments were still made from highly resistant animals. This was considered to impose an additional stress as the cattle skin environment can rapidly desiccate larvae. However, the larvae were able to compensate by uptake of fluid from the host.
Loss by repulsion of live larvae from the host or drowning in serous exudate were also not considered of major importance. The nature of rejection is discussed in a further paper.
The distribution of larvae after 24 h suggests that their early behaviour largely determines the areas favoured by adults. Movement to, and accumulation in, favoured areas is discussed.
Segmented Amorphous Silicon n-i-p Photodiodes on Stainless-Steel Foils for Flexible Imaging Arrays

This paper reports the first successful attempt to fabricate amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) n-i-p photodiodes on a thin stainless-steel foil substrate for medical X-ray imaging applications. Two architectures of the n-i-p-photosensor, where the top electrode is based on amorphous or polycrystalline ITO, have been developed and characterized. The impact of critical fabrication steps including the deposition of semiconductor layers, dry etch of the NIP stack, diode passivation and encapsulation, as well as a contact formation on the device performance is presented and discussed. The test structures comprising segmented photodiodes with an active area ranged from 0.126 × 0.126 to 1 × 1 mm2 have been fabricated on stainless-steel foils and on glass substrates for the purposes of process characterization. The fabricated samples are evaluated in terms of current-voltage, capacitance-voltage, and spectral response characteristics.
Lysine requirements of pigs from 2 to 7 kg live weight

Thirty-two male pigs were used to investigate the effects of nine levels of dietary lysine ranging from 0·41 to 1·30 g lysine per MJ gross energy (GE) on the performance of pigs weaned at 1 to 2 days of age and growing between 2 and 7 kg live weight. The nine dietary lysine treatments, which contained similar levels of GE and balance of essential amino acids, were offered to the pigs at a common feeding level of 2·0 MJ GE per kg metabolic live weight (M075) per day. Growth performance and protein deposition rates increased linearly with increasing dietary lysine content up to about 0·97 g lysine per MJ GE and remained relatively constant thereafter. The response of protein deposition (PD, g/day) in the whole body of pigs to dietary lysine (L, g lysine per MJ GE) was described by three models. The respective regression equation for the quadratic function was PD = -14·23 + 87·66 L – 36·00 L2 and maximum protein deposition occurred at 1·22 g lysine per MJ GE. The rectilinear model, which had an ascending linear phase (PD = 1·49 + 40·10 L, R2 = 0·98, P < 0·001) and a horizontal component representing a mean protein deposition rate of 39·7g/day revealed that maximum protein deposition occurred at 0·95g lysine per MJ GE. Finally, application of the asymptotic model also revealed a highly significant equation: PD = 43·40 — 79·99 × 0·07111, R2 = 0·94, P < 0·001; which indicates a dietary requirement of 1·07 g lysine per MJ GE assuming that the dietary requirement was estimated at 0·90 of the asymptote maximal value. The results indicate that the dietary lysine requirement for pigs during the first 3 weeks of life appears to have changed little over the past 20 years despite substantial changes in genotype.
Measurement of Gap and Grain-Boundary Inventories of 129I Used in Candu Fuels

Combined gap and grain-boundary inventories of 129I in 14 used CANDU fuel elements were measured by crushing and simultaneously leaching fuel segments for 4 h in a solution containing KI carrier. From analogy with previous work a near one-to-one correlation vas anticipated between the amount of stable Xe and the amount of 129I in the combined gap and grain-boundary regions of the fuel. However, the results showed that such a correlation was only apparent for low linear power rating (LLPR) fuels with an average linear power rating of 642 kV/m. For high linear power rating (HLPR) fuels (>44 kw/m), the 129I values were considerably smaller than expected. The combined gap and grain-boundary inventories of 129I in the 14 fuels tested varied from 1.8 to 11.01, with an average value of 3.6 ± 2.4% which suggests that the average value of 8.1 ± 1% used in safety assessment calculations overestimates the instant release fraction for 129I. Segments of used CANDU fuels were leached for 92 d (samples taken at 5, 28 and 92 d) to determine the kinetics of 129I release. Results could be fitted tentatively to half-order reaction kinetics, implying that 129I release is a diffusion-controlled process for LLPR fuels, and also for HLPR fuels, once the gap inventory has been leached. However, more data are needed over longer leaching periods to gain more understanding of the processes that control grain-boundary release of 129I from used CANDU fuel.

Pick's disease was diagnosed in a 28-year-old woman without a family history of dementia (or other psychiatric disorder), after an initial diagnosis of functional psychosis and management with ECT and neuroleptics. The case illustrates the need for detailed neurological and cognitive testing and consideration of neurodegenerative disorders even in young patients.

Summary
Introduction
All laser interferometers rely on measuring the strain in space caused by a gravitational wave, sensitivities of the order of 10–22 over millisecond timescales being required to allow a good probability of detection.
In principle the strain as monitored by the change in separation of two test masses hung as pendulums can be measured against the wavelength of light from a stable source, but the degree of wavelength or frequency stability required of the source is unreasonably high. It is much more conceivable to measure the distance between test masses along an arm with respect to the distance between similar masses along a perpendicular arm. This is particularly appropriate since the interaction of a gravitational wave is quadrupole in nature and so can cause an opposite sign of length change in the two arms. The measurement of a differential length change of this type when performed by interferometry puts much less demand in principle on the frequency stability of the illuminating laser light – since a Michelson interferometer is insensitive to changes in the wavelength of the light used if the path lengths are equal. However, in practice a fairly high degree of frequency stability is required. In the case of optical delay lines in the arms of a Michelson interferometer this is a result of the difficulty in achieving equal path lengths and of some light being scattered back early without completing the full number of reflections (Billing et al, 1983).
Facial Dyskinesia: A 16–Year Follow-up Study

The 109 female survivors of a mental hospital population surveyed in 1965 for facial dyskinesia were followed up 16 years later. The 99 survivors with non-organic brain syndromes were analysed. Prevalence of dyskinesia had risen from 18.4% to 46.5% during follow-up and its development was significantly associated with neuroleptic dosage. Enlarged ventricles on brain scans were significantly associated with dyskinesia, cognitive impairment and neuroleptic prescribing.

In 1965 a psychiatric in-patient population was surveyed for the prevalence of facial dyskinesia. The present investigation reports on their survival time. Among male and female patients with functional disorders (mostly schizophrenia) there was a strong association between moderate or severe facial dyskinesia and shortened survival, but no clinical factors were found to explain this. Mild facial dyskinesia in functional disorders was not associated with reduced life expectancy and may be attributable to the general effects of ageing rather than to a specific pathological process. Among patients with primary organic brain syndromes, dyskinesia was not associated with reduced life expectancy.
