Seven half-day regional listening sessions were held between December 2016 and April 2017 with groups of diverse stakeholders on the issues and potential solutions for herbicide-resistance management. The objective of the listening sessions was to connect with stakeholders and hear their challenges and recommendations for addressing herbicide resistance. The coordinating team hired Strategic Conservation Solutions, LLC, to facilitate all the sessions. They and the coordinating team used in-person meetings, teleconferences, and email to communicate and coordinate the activities leading up to each regional listening session. The agenda was the same across all sessions and included small-group discussions followed by reporting to the full group for discussion. The planning process was the same across all the sessions, although the selection of venue, time of day, and stakeholder participants differed to accommodate the differences among regions. The listening-session format required a great deal of work and flexibility on the part of the coordinating team and regional coordinators. Overall, the participant evaluations from the sessions were positive, with participants expressing appreciation that they were asked for their thoughts on the subject of herbicide resistance. This paper details the methods and processes used to conduct these regional listening sessions and provides an assessment of the strengths and limitations of those processes.

Herbicide resistance is ‘wicked’ in nature; therefore, results of the many educational efforts to encourage diversification of weed control practices in the United States have been mixed. It is clear that we do not sufficiently understand the totality of the grassroots obstacles, concerns, challenges, and specific solutions needed for varied crop production systems. Weed management issues and solutions vary with such variables as management styles, regions, cropping systems, and available or affordable technologies. Therefore, to help the weed science community better understand the needs and ideas of those directly dealing with herbicide resistance, seven half-day regional listening sessions were held across the United States between December 2016 and April 2017 with groups of diverse stakeholders on the issues and potential solutions for herbicide resistance management. The major goals of the sessions were to gain an understanding of stakeholders and their goals and concerns related to herbicide resistance management, to become familiar with regional differences, and to identify decision maker needs to address herbicide resistance. The messages shared by listening-session participants could be summarized by six themes: we need new herbicides; there is no need for more regulation; there is a need for more education, especially for others who were not present; diversity is hard; the agricultural economy makes it difficult to make changes; and we are aware of herbicide resistance but are managing it. The authors concluded that more work is needed to bring a community-wide, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complexity of managing weeds within the context of the whole farm operation and for communicating the need to address herbicide resistance.

In the summer of 1995, green foxtail seed samples were collected from 17 fields in southwestern Manitoba where trifluralin resistance was first identified in 1988. Since 1988, six of these fields had not been treated with dinitroaniline herbicides (DNAHs), four had been treated once, and seven had been treated two or more times. The proportions of resistant (R) and susceptible (S) seeds in each sample were determined using a petri-dish seed bioassay. Among the samples collected from fields that had not been treated between 1988 and 1995, two contained > 99% R seeds. The others ranged from 40 to 83%. Among the four samples collected from fields that were treated once, two contained > 99% R seeds and the other two contained 59 and 67% R seeds. Five of the seven samples collected from fields treated two or more times contained > 97% R seeds and the other two approximately 89 and 68% resistant seeds. There was no statistical correlation between the proportion of R seeds and the frequency of DNAH use since 1988. The proportion of R seeds present in 1988 and 1995 could not be compared because of the way in which fields were treated prior to sampling in the 2 yr; however, the results clearly indicate that trifluralin resistance can persist in green foxtail populations for at least 7 yr. By inference, the results indicate that trifluralin-resistant green foxtail plants are almost, if not equally, as fit as susceptible plants. Consequently, once resistance is present in a green foxtail population, DNAHs cannot be used for its control, even in the absence of additional selection pressure, for at least 7 yr and probably much longer.

The relative genetic similarity of 37 wild oat samples was determined using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis. These data were compared with the herbicide-resistance characteristics of each sample to determine the importance of mutation and gene flow in the spread of Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor resistance. There was a strong association between the genotypic clustering of samples, their herbicide-resistance characteristics, and their field of origin. Up to eight separate patches in a field were genetically similar, confirming that gene flow by seed movement is important in the distribution of resistant (R) wild oat seed. A greater emphasis on field scouting and treatment of wild oat patches could reduce the spread of resistance within fields. Samples collected from different fields were also found to be genetically similar, indicating that R wild oat was spread between fields. Improved sanitation of tillage and harvesting equipment and the use of certified seed could limit such seed movement.

Dose-response experiments showed that three samples of green foxtail collected from fields in southern Manitoba where trifluralin had not controlled the weed in 1987 were resistant to the herbicide. GR50 values indicated that the resistant populations were about 5 times more resistant to trifluralin than susceptible populations, about twice as resistant as wild oat, and about equally resistant as wheat. An additional 33 samples collected in 1988 from southwestern Manitoba where trifluralin has been used for nearly 20 yr in both cereal and oilseed crops were resistant to trifluralin.

Objective:
Emergency physicians are expected to rule out clinically important cervical spine injuries using clinical skills and imaging. Our objective was to determine whether emergency physicians could accurately rule out clinically important cervical spine injuries using computed tomographic (CT) imaging of the cervical spine.
Method:Fifteen emergency physicians were enrolled to interpret a sample of 50 cervical spine CT scans in a nonclinical setting. The sample contained a 30% incidence of cervical spine injury. After a 2-hour review session, the participants interpreted the CT scans and categorized them into either a suspected cervical spine injury or no cervical spine injury. Participants were asked to specify the location and type of injury. The gold standard interpretation was the combined opinion of two staff radiologists.
Results:Emergency physicians correctly identified 182 of the 210 abnormal cases with cervical spine injury. The sensitivity of emergency physicians was 87% (95% confidence interval [CI] 82–91), and the specificity was 76% (95% CI 74–77). The negative likelihood ratio was 0.18 (95% CI 0.12–0.25).
Conclusion:Experienced emergency physicians successfully identified a large proportion of cervical spine injuries on CT; however, they were not sufficiently sensitive to accurately exclude clinically important injuries. Emergency physicians should rely on a radiologist review of cervical spine CT scans prior to discontinuing cervical spine precautions.

A range of clinicians (n = 72) were asked to provide a definition of a schema. The participants were selected from different parts of the broad church of the CBT community, with all having received some training in CBT – although only 26.4% had a formal CBT qualification. Fourteen themes were identified, suggesting that the concept is perceived to be complex. However, the mean number of themes identified per clinician's definition was small: 2.86 (mode = 2). We consider this finding reflects a problem concerning a lack of clarity with respect to the use of one of the key concepts in CBT.

AbstractAlumina/SiC nanocomposites are more wear resistant and have better surface finish than pure alumina of a similar grain size. Grain pullouts caused by intergranular fracture are observed on worn surfaces of alumina whereas only a few pullouts resulting from transgranular fracture and scratches caused by plastic deformation are the main features of a worn surface of nanocomposites. Surface mechanical properties were investigated under idealised conditions using indentations. The stress around the indentations was investigated by Cr3+ fluorescence microscopy. The experiments were carried out using a variety of microstructures and varied indentation loads. In addition, the surface damage below indentations and worn surfaces was examined by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). TEM samples were prepared by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling directly from the surface.

Alumina/SiC “nanocomposites" consist of a dispersion of submicron SiC particles in an alumina matrix. The resistance to severe wear of the nanocomposites and the surface finish produced by a given grinding treatment are strikingly superior to those of pure alumina with the same grain size. We have explored the reasons for this by correlating a wide range of variations in the basic microstructure with the wear behaviour observed, including both the wear rate, and quantitative surface fractography of the worn surfaces. These improved properties of the nanocomposites are shown to be a consequence of a reduction in surface grain pullout by brittle fracture. In “dilute” nanocomposites (<10% SiC), this is due largely to a reduction in size of the individual pullouts. With 10% SiC nanoparticles, however, there is also evidence that the SiC directly suppresses the nucleation of cracking by plastic deformation of the surface. The origin of these effects will be discussed.

Aperture arrays were fabricated in 1.0µm thick gold films supported on 20nm thick silicon nitride membranes. Lithographic milling strategies in gold were evaluated through the use of in-situ sectioning and high resolution SEM imaging with the UWO CrossBeam FIB/SEM. A successful strategy for producing a 250nm diameter hole with sidewalls approaching vertical is summarized.

Through-holes of diameter 35nm and larger were milled in 100nm thick silicon nitride windows by focused ion beam milling. The holes were sized to optimize capture of gold nanoparticles from a liquid suspension. The colloidal suspensions of gold particles were deposited onto the membrane and drawn through the holes by capillary forces. Efficient, single particle filling is demonstrated for both 100nm and 250nm diameter particles indicating that once a hole is filled, flow can be effectively blocked. We show that lithographically defined arrays of colloidal gold can be achieved with >98% filling.

Conventional, broad-area, ion implantation has been combined with unconventional masking to create 2-D geometrical patterns of amorphization in single crystals, with selectable motifs. The patterns are fully developed by use of selective etching. Two examples are discussed. In the first example, a self-assembled array (with lattice spacing ∼1 μm) of silica spheres is used as an implant mask over InP. The variation of the mask thickness created by the sphere geometry modulates the implantation depth in a periodic fashion, which is subsequently revealed after selective etching of the associated amorphized volumes. In the second example, nanochannel arrays in an alumina film are used as an implant mask to produce a hexagonal closed packed array of amorphized cylinders in InP and SrTiO3 substrates. The ion beam-amorphized regions of the substrate are then removed by selective chemical etching to achieve the full 3-D patterning of 55 nm diameter holes on a 100 nm lattice spacing.
