Dose-response studies are an important tool in weed science. The use of such studies has become especially prevalent following the widespread development of herbicide resistant weeds. In the past, analyses of dose-response studies have utilized various types of transformations and equations which can be validated with several statistical techniques. Most dose-response analysis methods 1) do not accurately describe data at the extremes of doses and 2) do not provide a proper statistical test for the difference(s) between two or more dose-response curves. Consequently, results of dose-response studies are analyzed and reported in a great variety of ways, and comparison of results among various researchers is not possible. The objective of this paper is to review the principles involved in dose-response research and explain the log-logistic analysis of herbicide dose-response relationships. In this paper the log-logistic model is illustrated using a nonlinear computer analysis of experimental data. The log-logistic model is an appropriate method for analyzing most dose-response studies. This model has been used widely and successfully in weed science for many years in Europe. The log-logistic model possesses several clear advantages over other analysis methods and the authors suggest that it should be widely adopted as a standard herbicide dose-response analysis method.

Herbicide-resistant crops (HRCs), particularly glyphosate-resistant soybean, are increasingly important in Latin America. Prior to commercial release of these crops, their short- and long-term risks should be thoroughly assessed. A risk assessment should include the identification and characterization of potential hazards and an estimation of the likelihood of these hazards occurring. For HRCs the agro-ecological hazards are mostly related to the occurrence of herbicide-resistant (HR) weeds and crop volunteers and the adverse effects from the use of pesticides within the agricultural area. Herbicide-resistant rice is used as a case study to visualize the key components of such a risk assessment. For this purpose, a model that simulates a typical rain-fed rice production system in Central America was developed. The model was used to investigate the selection of HR weedy rice populations under various scenarios. Scenarios included contrasting weed management practices, hybridization levels between the commercial HR cultivated and weedy rice, and seed predation rates. Because risks may become apparent only after long-term cultivation of HR rice, simulations were run for a 10-yr period. In a cropping system relying on glufosinate-resistant rice for weed control, the model predicted that resistance to glufosinate would occur after 3 to 8 yr of monoculture. Increasing the hybridization level from 1 to 5% decreased the time for resistance to occur by 1 to 3 yr. Increasing annual rate of weedy rice seed predation at the soil surface delayed the development of resistance. Tillage as a weed control tactic also delayed the occurrence of resistance when compared with a no-till situation.

In addition to a yet-to-be published study showing arabinose to have an inhibiting effect on maltase, in vitro studies have shown l-arabinose to exert an inhibiting effect on small-intestinal sucrase and maltase and the consumption of a sucrose-rich drink containing l-arabinose to exert positive effects on postprandial blood glucose, insulin and C-peptide responses in humans. However, the effects of adding l-arabinose to mixed meals on the indices of glucose control are unknown. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether the positive effects of l-arabinose added to a sugar drink could be reproduced in subjects consuming a mixed meal containing sucrose and/or starch from wheat flour. A total of seventeen healthy men participated in study 1, a randomised, double-blind, cross-over trial. In this study, the subjects consumed two different breakfast meals containing sucrose and starch from wheat flour (meal A) or starch from wheat flour (meal B) supplemented with 0, 5 and 10 % l-arabinose by weight after a 12 h fast. A total of six healthy men participated in study 2, a randomised, double-blind, cross-over trial. In this study, the subjects also consumed meal B served in two different textures and a liquid meal with maltose supplemented with 0 and 20 % l-arabinose. In addition, 1·5 g of paracetamol was chosen as an indirect marker to assess gastric emptying. Postprandial plasma glucose, insulin and C-peptide concentrations were measured regularly for 3 h. The results of the present study showed that the peak plasma concentration, time to reach peak plasma concentration or AUC values of glucose, insulin and C-peptide were not altered after consumption of the test meals. Overall, it was not possible to reproduce the beneficial effects of l-arabinose added to sucrose drinks when l-arabinose was mixed in a solid or semi-solid mixed meal.

Summary
Introduction
The possibility of sensitizing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals to molecular diffusion was recognized in the early, pioneering days of NMR by Hahn, Carr and Purcell. In the 1960s, the Stejskal–Tanner pulse sequence for measuring diffusion properties was introduced and has been a mainstay of diffusion NMR every since. The Stejskal–Tanner sequence is also the prototypical pulse sequence for diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), although for human imaging there are a number of variants and alternative sequences that help manage the practical challenges of clinical scanning.
Until recently, DWI in humans has been dominated by brain applications, to a large degree because the relatively long transverse relaxation times (T2) in the brain help maintain a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the good field homogeneity helps minimize imaging artifacts. However, recent improvements in scanning hardware and pulse sequence design have now made feasible good quality DWI for the body, and body applications are becoming increasingly common.
In this chapter, we review the basic physical principals of DWI, emphasizing issues particularly pertinent to body applications. We begin with diffusion NMR physics, covering both the relevant concepts of molecular diffusion and the essential theory for the Stejskal–Tanner pulse sequence. We will consider practical aspects of image acquisition, such as sequence selection and artifact reduction. The analysis of DWI data and an overview of selected important body applications will be discussed.

Certain types of Markov jump processes x(t) with continuous state space and one or more absorbing states are studied. Cases where the transition rate in state x is of the form λ(x) = |x|δ in a neighbourhood of the origin in ℝd are considered, in particular. This type of problem arises from quantum physics in the study of laser cooling of atoms, and the present paper connects to recent work in the physics literature. The main question addressed is that of the asymptotic behaviour of x(t) near the origin for large t. The study involves solution of a renewal equation problem in continuous state space.
