Hyperemesis gravidarum severity, enteral tube feeding and cardiometabolic markers in offspring cord blood

This study aimed to investigate the association between hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) severity and early enteral tube feeding on cardiometabolic markers in offspring cord blood. We included women admitted for HG, who participated in the MOTHER randomised controlled trial (RCT) and observational cohort. The MOTHER RCT showed that early enteral tube feeding in addition to standard care did not affect symptoms/birth outcomes. Among RCT and cohort participants, we assessed how HG severity affected lipid, c-peptide, glucose and free thyroxine cord blood levels. HG severity measures were severity of vomiting at inclusion and 3 weeks after inclusion, pregnancy weight gain and 24-h energy intake at inclusion, readmissions and duration of hospital admissions. Cord blood measures were also compared between RCT participants allocated to enteral tube feeding and those receiving standard care. Between 2013-2016, 215 women were included: 115 RCT and 100 cohort participants. Eighty-one cord blood samples were available. Univariable not multivariable regression analysis showed that lower maternal weight gain was associated with higher cord blood glucose levels (β: –0·08, 95% CI –0·16, –0·00). Lower maternal weight gain was associated with higher Apo-B cord blood levels in multivariable regression analysis (β: –0·01, 95% CI –0·02, –0·01). No associations were found between other HG severity measures or allocation to enteral tube feeding and cord blood cardiometabolic markers. In conclusion, while lower maternal weight gain was associated with higher Apo-B cord blood levels, no other HG severity measures were linked with cord blood cardiometabolic markers, nor were these markers affected by enteral tube feeding.

In China, one percent of the richest population holds more than one-third of the wealth, while the poorest 25% shares no more than two percent of the total. The country’s rapid economic development has resulted in increasing socio-economic disparities, and a rapidly deteriorating environment. This puts the Chinese citizens, especially the most vulnerable and deprived socio-economic status (SES) groups, at high risks of environmental inequality (EI). In most SES-based EI studies conducted in China, household wealth has often been overlooked, though it potentially serves a good economic indicator to capture the socio-economic effect of environmental change in China. Nevertheless, existing SES databases in China are of low spatial resolution and are insufficient to support fine-grained EI studies at the intra-city level in China. The core research challenge is to develop a representative household wealth proxy in high-spatial resolution for China. This study highlights the research gaps and proposes a new household wealth proxy, which integrates both fine-grained data/features such as daytime satellite imagery and easily accessible wealth indicators such as house prices. We also capitalize on everyday economic activity data retrieved from personal mobile phones and online transaction/social platforms in the composition of our wealth proxy to achieve a higher accuracy in estimating household wealth at fine-grained resolution via machine learning. Finally, we summarize the challenges in improving both the quality and the availability of Chinese socio-economic datasets, while protecting personal privacy and information security during the data collection process for household wealth proxy development in China.

A method of workspace modelling for spherical parallel manipulators (SPMs) of symmetrical architecture is developed by virtue of Euler parameters in the paper. The adoption of Euler parameters in the expression of spatial rotations of SPMs helps not only to eliminate the possible singularity in the rotation matrix, but also to formulate all equations in polynomials, which are more easily manipulated. Moreover, a homogeneous workspace can be obtained with Euler parameters for the SPMs, which facilitates the evaluation of dexterity. In this work, the problem of workspace modelling and analysis is formulated in terms of Euler parameters. An equation dealing with boundary surfaces is derived and branches of boundary surface are identified. Evaluation of dexterity is explored to quantitatively describe the capability of a manipulator to attain orientations. The singularity identification is also addressed. Examples are included to demonstrate the application of the proposed method.

This paper briefly describes the principle of operation and science goals of the AMANDA high energy neutrino telescope located at the South Pole, Antarctica. Results from an earlier phase of the telescope, called AMANDA-BIO, demonstrate both reliable operation and the broad astrophysical reach of this device, which includes searches for a variety of sources of ultrahigh energy neutrinos: generic point sources, Gamma-Ray Bursts and diffuse sources. The predicted sensitivity and angular resolution of the telescope were confirmed by studies of atmospheric muon and neutrino backgrounds. We also report on the status of the analysis from AMANDA-II, a larger version with far greater capabilities. At this stage of analysis, details of the ice properties and other systematic uncertainties of the AMANDA-II telescope are under study, but we have made progress toward critical science objectives. In particular, we present the first preliminary flux limits from AMANDA-II on the search for continuous emission from astrophysical point sources, and report on the search for correlated neutrino emission from Gamma Ray Bursts detected by BATSE before decommissioning in May 2000. During the next two years, we expect to exploit the full potential of AMANDA-II with the installation of a new data acquisition system that records full waveforms from the in-ice optical sensors.

A description is given of the profiling of CVD grown 3C SiC on undulant (001) Si using low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL). Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and X-ray Raman scattering (XRS) are compared for acoustical modes of 4H SiC. Schottky barrier heights are obtained for 4H and 6H SiC on different crystal faces using three different measuring techniques. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is used to display a variety of porous SiC morphologies achieved in n-type and p-type SiC.
This paper is intended to be the introduction to the “CHARACTERIZATION” section of this volume. To serve this purpose we illustrate the subject matter with new results using four distinct experimental techniques.
Ferroelectric and Piezoelectric Properties of MOCVD Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 Epitaxial Thin Films

We have grown epitaxial Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) and (1-x)(Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3)- x(PbTiO3) (PMN-PT) thin films by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition at 700 - 780°C on (100) SrTiO3 and SrRuO3/SrTiO3 substrates. The zero-bias permittivity and loss measured at room temperature and 10 kHz for 220 nm thick pure PMN films were 900 and 1.5%, respectively. For PMN-PT films, the small-signal permittivity ranged from 1000 to 1500 depending on deposition conditions and Ti content; correspondingly low values for the zero-bias dielectric loss between 1 and 5% were determined for all specimens. For PMN-PT with x of approximately 0.30–0.35, polarization hysteresis with Pr,≈18μC/cm2 was obtained. Initial piezoresponse data are discussed.
Properties and Orientation of Antiferroelectric Lead Zirconate Thin Films Grown by MOCVD

Single-phase polycrystalline PbZrO3 (PZ) thin films, 3000-6000 A thick, have been grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on (111)Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates at ≍525°C. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the PZ films grown on (111)Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (Pt/Tgi/Si) showed preferred pseudocubic (110) orientation. In contrast, PZ films grown on 150 A thick PbTiO3 (PT) template layers exhibited a pseudocubic (100) preferred orientation, and PZ films deposited on TiO2 template layers consisted of randomly oriented grains. The PZ films grown on Pt/Ti/Si with or without templates exhibited dielectric constants of 120-200 and loss tangents of 0.01-0.0. The PZ films with (110) orientation exhibited an electric-field-inducedtransformation from the antiferroelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase with a polarization of ≍34 µC/cm2, and the energy that was stored during switching was 7.1 J/cm3. The field needed to excite the ferroelectric state and that needed to revert to the antiferroelectric state were 50 and 250 kV/cm, respectively. Relationships between the MOCVD processing and the film microstructure and properties are discussed.
