The electron spin resonance spectrum of a sample of natural, orange-coloured fluorite from Broken Hill, Australia, has been observed and shown to arise from the presence of manganese ions. From an analysis of the structure of this spectrum it has been possible to estimate the various contributions to the ionic energy level splitting and to show that these are in good agreement with comparable results for synthetic material. It is evident that the manganese ions have entered the lattice substitutionally at Ca2+ sites and the nature of this site is discussed.

During 1990 we surveyed the southern sky using a multi-beam receiver at frequencies of 4850 and 843 MHz. The half-power beamwidths were 4 and 25 arcmin respectively. The finished surveys cover the declination range between +10 and −90 degrees declination, essentially complete in right ascension, an area of 7.30 steradians. Preliminary analysis of the 4850 MHz data indicates that we will achieve a five sigma flux density limit of about 30 mJy. We estimate that we will find between 80 000 and 90 000 new sources above this limit. This is a revised version of the paper presented at the Regional Meeting by the first four authors; the surveys now have been completed.

Gamma-ray burst host galaxies are deficient in molecular gas, and show anomalous metal-poor regions close to GRB positions. Using recent Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) Hi observations we show that they have substantial atomic gas reservoirs. This suggests that star formation in these galaxies may be fuelled by recent inflow of metal-poor atomic gas. While this process is debated, it can happen in low-metallicity gas near the onset of star formation because gas cooling (necessary for star formation) is faster than the Hi-to-H2 conversion.

Background:
ENT surgeons may be the first specialists to encounter and diagnose patients with salivary gland disease. A new entity involving the salivary glands has recently been described of which ENT surgeons need to be aware: immunoglobulin G4 related chronic sclerosing sialadenitis.
Method:A literature search of Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library databases was performed, using the search terms ‘IgG4’, ‘hyperIgG4 syndrome’ and ‘IgG4 related chronic sclerosing sialadenitis’.
Results:Knowledge concerning immunoglobulin G4 related chronic sclerosing sialadenitis is rapidly increasing. This new entity is part of a fibro-inflammatory corticosteroid-responsive systemic disease (immunoglobulin G4 related disease) and has been described in almost every organ. Biopsy of the submandibular gland can be diagnostic. However, the diagnosis can easily be overlooked if: clinical suspicion is not high, one is unaware of the classical morphology and/or immunoglobulin G4 staining is not performed. This paper presents a summary of the current understanding of the disease and its management.
Conclusion:ENT surgeons should be aware of this new disease entity. Patients with systemic disease should be managed under a multidisciplinary team, with input from clinicians who have an interest in such diseases (such as gastroenterologists and rheumatologists), and input from histopathologists and radiologists.

The origin of the far-infrared emission from the nearby radio galaxy M87 remains a matter of debate. Some studies find evidence of a far-infrared excess due to thermal dust emission, whereas others propose that the far-infrared emission can be explained by synchrotron emission without the need for an additional dust emission component. We observed M87 with PACS and SPIRE as part of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS). We compare the new Herschel data with a synchrotron model based on infrared, submm and radio data to investigate the origin of the far-infrared emission. We find that both the integrated SED and the Herschel surface brightness maps are adequately explained by synchrotron emission. At odds with previous claims, we find no evidence of a diffuse dust component in M87.
An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Gloucester

Fourteen people living in or near the city of Gloucester fell ill with Legionnaires' disease caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup (SG) 1 between 27 August and 27 October 1986. Another patient had fallen ill on 30 May. Nine of the 15 were diagnosed retrospectively during a case finding exercise. There were three deaths. Three cases of Pontiac fever were also diagnosed.
The source was probably one or more wet cooling towers. Nineteen premises in the city with such towers were identified, and three just outside Gloucester. Samples from 11 of the 22 premises grew Legionella spp.; from nine of these L. pneumophila SG 1 (Pontiac) was isolated. The efficacy of regular addition of biocide in addition to hypochlorite added at the time of disinfection in inhibiting the growth of Legionella spp. was demonstrated.
A survey of patients' movements during their likely incubation period showed that there was no single building that all patients had visited, but there were two areas of the city which nearly all had visited or passed through by car. A case-control study demonstrated an association with one of these areas.
Cooling towers near both areas may have been sources but the evidence is insufficient to incriminate any single one. The unexpected finding of L. pneumophila SG 1 (Pontiac) in nine towers supports the hypothesis that there may have been multiple sources. Cooling towers may have been contaminated by mains water or by drift from other towers.

Investigation of a section near Morston on the central north Norfolk coast has revealed evidence of a complex sequence of beach deposits laid down under interglacial conditions in association with relative sea levels similar to those of the present. This material rests upon a highly calcareous till and is itself overlain by a deposit comparable with the Hunstanton Till of northwest Norfolk. This site therefore represents the first location at which Hunstanton Till has been found overlying older till, and the only location so far discovered in East Anglia at which interglacial deposits separate glacigenic sediments. The site also contains the only indubitable Quaternary warm stage deposits to have been recognized in central north Norfolk.

Tràng An is a Vietnamese government supported cultural and ecological park development covering 2,500 hectares that is centred on an isolated massif on the southern edge of the Song Hong delta in Ninh Bình Province, north Vietnam (Fig. 1). The archaeological investigation of Tràng An is being led jointly by the Xuan Truong Construction Corporation and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge, under the direction of the lead author. The Corporation is creating an ecologically sensitive development – the ‘Tràng An Tourism Resort’ – within this karstic landscape, which is also the subject of a planned application to UNESCO for World Heritage Site status. International involvement in this work has been at the behest of Nguyêń Van Truong, the General Director of Xuan Truong and at the invitation of the Ninh Bình People's Committee. The research itself is carried out under the guidance of Nguyêń Van Son, the Tràng An Tourism Resort Project Manager. The main focus of the May 2007 season was to undertake excavations at the site of Hang Boi (the ‘Fortune-Teller's Cave’).

The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) is an ongoing multi-centre prospective cohort study designed to investigate the relationship between nutrition and cancer, with the potential for studying other diseases as well. The study currently includes 519 978 participants (366 521 women and 153 457 men, mostly aged 35–70 years) in 23 centres located in 10 European countries, to be followed for cancer incidence and cause-specific mortality for several decades. At enrolment, which took place between 1992 and 2000 at each of the different centres, information was collected through a non-dietary questionnaire on lifestyle variables and through a dietary questionnaire addressing usual diet. Anthropometric measurements were performed and blood samples taken, from which plasma, serum, red cells and buffy coat fractions were separated and aliquoted for long-term storage, mostly in liquid nitrogen. To calibrate dietary measurements, a standardised, computer-assisted 24-hour dietary recall was implemented at each centre on stratified random samples of the participants, for a total of 36 900 subjects. EPIC represents the largest single resource available today world-wide for prospective investigations on the aetiology of cancers (and other diseases) that can integrate questionnaire data on lifestyle and diet, biomarkers of diet and of endogenous metabolism (e.g. hormones and growth factors) and genetic polymorphisms. First results of case–control studies nested within the cohort are expected early in 2003. The present paper provides a description of the EPIC study, with the aim of simplifying reference to it in future papers reporting substantive or methodological studies carried out in the EPIC cohort.
Weak mean flows induced by anisotropic turbulence impinging onto planar and undulating surfaces

Prandtl's secondary mean motions of the second kind are driven by the variation of Reynolds stresses near resistive boundaries. In the flows considered here the turbulence is generated away from the boundary in the absence of a mean flow and then impacts onto a rigid surface placed into the flow at $t\,{=}\,0$. The initial development of the distorted flow is obtained using the linear approximation and the statistical analysis of rapid distortion theory, following Hunt & Graham (1978) assuming homogeneous stationary high-Reynolds-number turbulence with an integral length scale $L_\infty$ and r.m.s. velocity $v_\infty\prime$. First, the effects of axisymmetric anisotropy and of different forms of the spectra are analysed for turbulence impinging onto a plane surface lying at an angle $\alpha$ to the unit vector $\bf e$ of the axis of symmetry of the energy spectrum tensor $\Phi_{ij}(\mbox{{\boldmath k}})$. $R$ is defined as the ratio of the largest to smallest variances of the velocity components. The surface blocking leads to gradients of Reynolds shear stresses normal to the surface in the source layer $B^{(s)}$ with thickness of order $L_\infty$ and thence to a mean velocity $U(t) \,{\sim}\,{-}tv_\infty\prime^2 \sin 2\alpha (1\,{-}\,1/R) /L_\infty$ along the slope in the opposite direction of the projection of ${\boldmath e}$ onto the plane (i.e. in the direction ($\mbox{{\boldmath e}}\wedge\mbox{{\boldmath n}}$)$\wedge\mbox{{\boldmath n}}$ where ${\boldmath n}$ is the normal into the flow). $U$ is greatest near the surface where $y \,{\ll}\, L_\infty$. As a result of shear stresses being induced by the mean velocity gradient, a steady flow results over a time scale $T_L\,{=}\,L_\infty/v_\infty\prime$ – an order of magnitude estimate for the steady-state mean velocity is thence $U(t/T_L \,{\to}\, \infty) \,{\sim}\, v_\infty\prime(\sin 2\alpha (1\,{-}\,1/R))^{1/2}$. Secondly, the effect of a curved surface is studied by analysing isotropic turbulence near an undulating surface of wavelength $\Lambda$ and amplitude $H$, with a low slope so that $H \,{\ll}\, \Lambda$. The boundary condition of zero normal velocity at the curved surface generates larger irrotational fluctuations in the troughs, smaller fluctuations over the crest, and shear stresses over the slopes. The curl of the gradients of Reynolds normal and shear stresses within $B^{(s)}$ cause the growth of a mean vorticity which induces a mean velocity of order $-tv_\infty\prime^2/L_\infty$ within $B^{(s)}$ and a weaker recirculating velocity of order $-tv_\infty\prime^2/\Lambda$ in a deeper wave layer, $B^{(w)}$, with thickness of order $\Lambda$ outside $B^{(s)}$. The wavelength of the mean motion is $\Lambda$, with downward motions over the troughs and upward motion over the crest. As in the first case, a steady flow is predicted when $t/T_L \,{\gg}\, 1$. Anisotropic free-stream turbulence also induces mean motions on undulating surfaces with the same wavelength $\Lambda$ as that of the undulating surface, but the directions of these mean motions can be towards or away from the troughs/crests depending on the orientation of the anisotropy of the free stream. Flow visualization experiments conducted in a mixing box with oscillating anisotropic and isotropic grids demonstrated the existence of these mean flows and that they reach a steady state with an intensity and length scale comparable to those predicted. These results are also consistent with numerical simulation of Krettenauer & Schumann (1992) of convective turbulence over an undulating surface.

The NUGA project is a high-resolution (0.5″−1″) CO survey of low luminosity AGN including the full sequence of activity types (Seyferts, LINERs and transition objects). NUGA aims to systematically study the different mechanisms for gas fueling of AGNs in the Local Universe. In this paper we discuss the latest results of this recently completed survey, which now includes newly acquired subarcsec resolution observations for all targets of the sample. The large variety of circumnuclear disk morphologies found in NUGA galaxies (m = 1, m = 2 and stochastic instabilities) is a challenging result that urges the refinement of current dynamical models. In this paper we report on new results obtained in 4 study cases for NUGA: NGC 4826, NGC 7217, NGC 4579 and NGC 6951.

Mastitis is one of most frequent and costly diseases encountered on dairy farms. In 1998 mastitis costs UK dairy farmers approximately £80 million a year and this figure increases to over £100 million when further associated losses such as somatic cell count (SCC) penalties, antibiotic residue penalties and reduced cell count and bacteria count payments are accounted for. In the 1980’s and 1990’s there has been a continuing increase in the incidence of environmental mastitis and especially due to E coli (Brand, 1999),. Increasing SCC levels are set against a background of emphasis on higher milk price for low SSC milk by purchasers has led to the need to increase milk price by reducing losses from high SCC levels. The aim of the study was to monitor bulk milk SCC levels in milk supplied to a milk producer co-operative over a 12 month period and select a sub-sample of milk producers with high SCC, analyse the clinical incidence of mastitis, establish the pathogens involved and their response to antibiotics.
Turbulent channel flow near maximum drag reduction: simulations, experiments and mechanisms

It is well known that the drag in a turbulent flow of a polymer solution is significantly reduced compared to Newtonian flow. Here we consider this phenomenon by means of a direct numerical simulation of a turbulent channel flow. The polymers are modelled as elastic dumbbells using the FENE-P model. In the computations the polymer model is solved simultaneously with the flow equations, i.e. the polymers are deformed by the flow and in their turn influence the flow structures by exerting a polymer stress. We have studied the results of varying the polymer parameters, such as the maximum extension, the elasticity and the concentration. For the case of highly extensible polymers the results of our simulations are very close to the maximum drag reduction or Virk (1975) asymptote. Our simulation results show that at approximately maximum drag reduction the slope of the mean velocity profile is increased compared to the standard logarithmic profile in turbulent wall flows. For the r.m.s. of the streamwise velocity fluctuations we find initially an increase in magnitude which near maximum drag reduction changes to a decrease. For the velocity fluctuations in the spanwise and wall-normal directions we find a continuous decrease as a function of drag reduction. The Reynolds shear stress is strongly reduced, especially near the wall, and this is compensated by a polymer stress, which at maximum drag reduction amounts to about 40% of the total stress. These results have been compared with LDV experiments of Ptasinski et al. (2001) and the agreement, both qualitatively and quantitatively, is in most cases very good. In addition we have performed an analysis of the turbulent kinetic energy budgets. The main result is a reduction of energy transfer from the streamwise direction, where the production of turbulent kinetic energy takes place, to the other directions. A substantial part of the energy production by the mean flow is transferred directly into elastic energy of the polymers. The turbulent velocity fluctuations also contribute energy to the polymers. The elastic energy of the polymers is subsequently dissipated by polymer relaxation. We have also computed the various contributions to the pressure fluctuations and identified how these change as a function of drag reduction. Finally, we discuss some cross-correlations and various length scales. These simulation results are explained here by two mechanisms. First, as suggested by Lumley (1969) the polymers damp the cross-stream or wall-normal velocity fluctuations and suppress the bursting in the buffer layer. Secondly, the ‘shear sheltering’ mechanism acts to amplify the streamwise fluctuations in the thickened buffer layer, while reducing and decoupling the motions within and above this layer. The expression for the substantial reduction in the wall drag derived by considering the long time scales of the nonlinear fluctuations of this damped shear layer, is shown to be consistent with the experimental data of Virk et al. (1967) and Virk (1975).
Studies on the epidemiology of bluetongue virus in China

Sentinel herds of large ruminants were established at five centres in Yunnan Province, Peoples Republic of China, between 1995 and 1997. The application of a sensitive antigen capture ELISA to facilitate virus isolation procedures led to the isolation of 108 strains of bluetongue (BLU) virus. Serotypes isolated included types 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 21 and 23. Virus transmission occurred over a period of 1–3 months at each of the four positive sites, giving an overall BLU virus transmission period for the province of 5 months, from early June to early November. The greatest level of transmission took place in July and August. The duration of viraemia in individual animals varied from 1 to 7 weeks, with a mean calculated for each serotype between 6 and 20 days. The study represents the first detailed investigation of the epidemiology of BLU in China utilizing sentinel herds.

The results of a therapeutic trial of the use of melatonin in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex who also have severe sleep problems are reported. We used a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover design. Seven patients with confirmed diagnoses of tuberous sclerosis and significant sleep disorder were recruited. We employed three outcome measures: total sleep time, time to sleep onset, and number of awakenings. Patients treated with melatonin had a small but clinically significant improvement in total sleep time (mean improvement 0.55 hours, P<0.05). They also tended to have an improvement in sleep-onset time but this did not reach statistical significance. Melatonin, in this trial, had no discernible effect on sleep fragmentation. We conclude that melatonin does have a beneficial effect in prolonging the total sleep time of patients with tuberous sclerosis and sleep disorder and that further trials are necessary to investigate the issues of optimal dosage, tolerance, and possible interactions with other medications.

The cotton textile industry remains central to all accounts of the first industrial revolution. Innovations in this period precipitated an extraordinary acceleration in the growth of output and a steep decline in the cost of producing all varieties of cloth. In this paper we outline an explanation through an analysis of the community of inventors responsable for the technological transformation, which enables us to offer some new generalizations of the pace and pattern of the inventive activity in this period.
