Introduction:
Now-a-days, obesity and other cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) became a matter of concern in Schizophrenia, due to their potential relation with atipical antypsychotics. The high prevalence of CVRF in schizophrenic patients is a consensual issue, but there are only a few studies in Portugal.
Objectives:This is an observational transversal study thats aims to evaluate the presence of CVRF, and to establish the relationship between these ones and anthropometric measurements evaluating global and regional adiposity, in a population of schizophrenic patients.
Material and Methods:The authors studied a population of 25 schizophrenic patients followed at our Department of Psychiatry. These instruments were used: PANSS (Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale), and a semi-structured interview, with sociodemografic data, and information about life style, medication and schizophrenia. These informations were completed according to the clinical process. The following measurements were recorded: weight, height, abdominal circunference, lipidic and glicemic values, and blood pressure.
Conclusions:The high frequency of CVRF in the population of this study confirms the importance of regular medical evaluations, in every patients with Schizophrenia, to allow early diagnosis/monitorization of CVRF. However, our results dont confirm the benefit of anthropometric measurements as screening methods, possibly due to our small sample. Curiously, we found a week correlation bettween CVRF and environment factors (as medication or life style), what can reforce the hold ideia of Schizophrenic susceptibility to CVRF.

Objectives:
There are many studies reporting poor insight in schizophrenic patients. Other studies demonstrated deficits in executive functions in these same patients.
The results of empirical studies that try to establish the relationship between levels of insight and various clinical and neuropsychological variables are not consistent.
The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between the executive functions, as defined by the Behavioral Assessment of Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS- N. Alderman, 1996) and the level of insight, evaluated by Assessment of Insight in Psychosis scale (I. Marková, 2002). We also tried to correlate some clinical variables (age, gender, age of onset, schoolarity, type of pharmacotherapy, severity of psychopathology) with the level of insight and executive dysfunction.
Population and Methodswe studied 50 schizophrenic outpatients of the Psychiatry Department of our Hospital, whose age ranged between 16 and 60 years, and who had stabilized disease. Informed Consent was obtained from all participants.
We evaluated patients trough the following sequence: clinical interview in order to obtain clinical and social variables; Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE – M. Folstein,1975); Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS - Kay SR, 1987),Assessment of Insight in Psychosis Scale (I. Marková, 2002) and Behavioral Assessment of Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS- N. Alderman, 1996).
Results and ConclusionsThe study is now under statistically evaluation.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common demyelinating disease of the central nervous system and one that presents more neuropsychiatric manifestations.
The authors of this paper proposes to characterize psychological and psychopathologically a group of patients sent from Neurology to Psychiatry at St. João Hospital - Porto.
The initial group consisted of 48 patients (35 women and 13 men). Data collection was done through a semi-formant interview to obtain socio-demographic and clinical data. The psychological and psychopathological evaluation was made with the following tools: MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination), Raven, MOS SF-36 (Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey), SCL-90 (Hopkins Symptoms Distress Checklist 90), HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), scale and EDSS (Expanded Disability Status Scale).
On this sample the median duration of disease was 11 years and the value of EDSS has an average of 2.49. The sample does not show significant levels of psychopathology. However the results suggest that the worse is the overall severity of MS (EDSS) and the greater the duration of illness, the worst seems to be general physical and emotional functioning. In this study, no associations were found between variables of MS and psychopathological findings. However cognitive dysfunction appears to worsen with the greatest severity of MS, as in other works.

Background:
An essential condition to validate a diagnosis is its stability over time. Since there are no biological markers for psychiatric disorders, the diagnosis relies on clinical expertise, with several consequences in treatment planning, disease burden and disability, affecting outcome and public health.
Objectives:The aims of this study were:
1. the assessment of long term stability of the diagnosis of psychotic disorders,
2. its implications in patient treatment, and
3. the evaluation of eventual predictors of diagnosis stability.
Methods:This was a retrospective study carried out in the Department of Psychiatry of a large University Hospital (Hospital S. João, Porto, Portugal). Patients enrolled were admitted in the inpatient unit from 2000 to 2003 (n=190, 12.41% of 1531 patients admitted), experienced a first psychotic episode, and fulfilled criteria for one of the following diagnosis: schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, drug induced psychosis, acute and transient psychotic disorders, schizophreniform disorder and psychosis NOS (ICD-10 classification). the diagnoses were extracted from clinical records, and reassessed five years after the initial diagnosis. the analysis focuses on diagnostic agreement over time; clinical and demographic variables were also collected and putative associations with diagnostic shift considered.
Results:The study is now under statistic evaluation.

Background: Down Syndrome (DS) has a mosaicism of presentations, but a number of common features. Cerebral evoked potentials (somatosensory, visual and auditory) can be higher in amplitude in DS. The aim of this study is to explore the value of the neurophysiological amplitude of three different modalities in DS individuals undergoing spinal surgery, or epilepsy evaluation. Methods: Standard procedure of EEG evaluation was conducted. We routinely monitor somatosensory (SSEP) and motor evoked potentials (MEP), using peripheral nerves stimulation and transcranial electrical stimulation during surgery. We report findings from 14 DS individuals age-matched to 14 individuals with idiopathic scoliosis Results: The amplitude of the SSEP is significantly higher in DS individuals than in age-matched controls using the same parameters. SSEP;10.2±2.5µV vs 2.4±2.3µV (p<0.05, paired t-test). The threshold for eliciting MEPs was also significantly lower in DS in comparison to controls, 175±20V vs 629±100V, (p<0.05, paired t-test). Interictal EEG showed high amplitude spike and waves, and greater intracortical coherence in DS with epilepsy than non-DS patients Conclusions: Robust neurophysiological findings showed high amplitude sensory evoked potentials, low threshold motor evoked potentials, and high amplitude spikes and wave, all reflect a common process of increased neuronal synchronicity and oscillatory behaviour in Down Syndrome.

Berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) is an important forage legume and is the primary winter forage crop in Pakistan. There are significant gaps in yield potential among varieties of berseem clover, as well as yields obtained at research stations and on-farm. To address this problem a survey of farmers was undertaken in the districts of Kasur and Okara, Punjab, Pakistan to determine the level of knowledge and understanding of berseem forage cultivation and seed production. The study comprised 44% smallholder (<3 ha), 26% medium (3–5 ha) and 30% large farmers (>5 ha) with average age of 42 years. Most farmers had little or no knowledge of the role of seed quality, inoculation with rhizobium, pollination, fertiliser use, irrigation management and the importance of forage nutritional value in improving livestock productivity. Most farmers (56%) had received no input from the government or private sector to improve forage production, relying instead on traditional knowledge. Knowledge of the importance of land preparation (95%), sowing rate (98%) and insect and pest management (75%) was higher than seed selection and fertilisation. Adoption of improved varieties (3%) and production technologies (14%) was low due to various constraints including ignorance, high cost of inputs, lack of availability of inputs in the market and a perceived high level of financial risk. Almost 100% of the respondents agreed that seed of improved varieties was a pre-requisite for higher forage and seed production as well as essential to start village-based forage seed enterprises.

Background
Pain-related conditions have been reported to play a key role among risk factors for suicide. Headache in particular has been repeatedly associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The aims of this study were: 1) to assess the association between lifetime headache (both non-migrainous headache and migraine) and lifetime suicide attempts (SA); 2) to differentiate, within subjects with lifetime SA, patients with and without lifetime headache in terms of socio-demographic and clinical features.
MethodsWe studied 1965 subjects from a cohort of community-dwelling persons aged 65 years and over without dementia (the ESPRIT study), divided in two groups: those with (n = 75), and those without a lifetime SA (n = 1890). Logistic regression analyses were used to compare these groups according to lifetime headache status.
ResultsAfter adjusting for gender, living alone, tobacco and alcohol consumption, and depressive, manic/hypomanic and anxiety disorders, lifetime headache frequency was significantly higher in subjects with a lifetime SA compared with controls (OR = 1.92 [1.17–3.15]). Additionally, different factors were identified as being associated with lifetime SA in participants with lifetime headache (female gender, a lower level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, insomnia, lifetime major depression) versus participants without headache (glycemia and lifetime major depression).
ConclusionsLifetime headache was associated with lifetime SA. Subjects who are women and report the co-occurrence of headache and insomnia as well as lifetime major depression require higher attention and a careful screening for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

The effect of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission from semi-arid cropping systems is poorly understood. Closed static chambers were used to measure the fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), CO2 and methane (CH4) from a spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Yitpi) crop-soil system at the Australian grains free-air carbon dioxide enrichment (AGFACE) facility at Horsham in southern Australia in 2009. The targeted atmospheric CO2 concentrations (hereafter CO2 concentration is abbreviated as [CO2]) were 390 (ambient) and 550 (elevated) μmol/mol for both rainfed and supplementary irrigated treatments. Gas measurements were conducted at five key growth stages of wheat. Elevated [CO2] increased the emission of N2O and CO2 by 108 and 29%, respectively, with changes being greater during the wheat vegetative stage. Supplementary irrigation reduced N2O emission by 36%, suggesting that N2O was reduced to N2 in the denitrification process. Irrigation increased CO2 flux by 26% at ambient [CO2] but not at elevated [CO2], and had no impact on CH4 flux. The present results suggest that under future atmospheric [CO2], agricultural GHG emissions at the vegetative stage may be higher and irrigation is likely to reduce the emissions from semi-arid cropping systems.

The ultrastructure of the macrogamete and developing oocyst of Eimeria maxima (Weybridge strain) was examined in the intestinal cells of chicks fed 3 different anticoccidial drugs. Amprolium at 125 p.p.m., arprinocid at 35 p.p.m. and dinitolmide at 250 p.p.m. caused considerable morphological abnormality and incomplete development of the wall-forming bodies of Type 2 (WFB II), which did not appear able to participate in oocyst wall formation. The wall-forming bodies of Type 1 (WFB I) were able in each case to participate in oocyst wall formation although amprolium and dinitolmide produced morphological abnormalities in them. In birds medicated with dinitolmide, the outer layer of the oocyst wall was formed initially at opposite poles of the macrogame tes rather than as a uniform layer. Other abnormalities resulting from drug treatment are reported and some evidence that intravacuolar tubules may be formed by the parasite pellicle is presented.

The dominant, contemporary paradigm for developing and refining diagnoses relies heavily on assessing reliability with kappa coefficients and virtually ignores a core component of psychometric practice: the theory of latent structures. This article describes a psychometric approach to psychiatric nosology that emphasizes the diagnostic accuracy and confusability of diagnostic categories. We apply these methods to the Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies (DIGS), a structured psychiatric interview designed by the NIMH Genetics Initiative for genetic studies of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Our results show that sensitivity and specificity were excellent for both DSM-III-R and RDC diagnoses of major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. In contrast, diagnostic accuracy was substantially lower for subtypes of schizoaffective disorder – especially for the DSM-III-R definitions. Both the bipolar and depressed subtypes of DSM-III-R schizoaffective disorder had excellent specificity but poor sensitivity. The RDC definitions also had excellent specificity but were more sensitive than the DSM-III-R schizoaffective diagnoses. The source of low sensitivity for schizoaffective subtypes differed for the two diagnostic systems. For RDC criteria, the schizoaffective subtypes were frequently confused with one another; they were less frequently confused with other diagnoses. In contrast, the DSM-III-R subtypes were often confused with schizophrenia, but not with each other.

The structure and development of microgametocytes of Eimeria maxima from chicks killed during the 6th day of infection were examined using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Initially, nucleoli disappear and the surface of the microgametocyte invaginates. This is followed by a condensation of the chromatin which then lies at the periphery of the nuclei. Concurrent with this, the flagella are formed and they project into the parasitophorous vacuole and internal invaginations. Eventually, the nuclei become more dense and are seen to protrude from the periphery of the gametocyte. The surface view of mature microgametocytes consists of a large number of closely packed flagella.

Medication of chicks with 70p.p.m. arprinoeid in the food, starting 2 days prior to inoculation with Eimeria tenella, resulted in decreased oocyst production and oocyst sporulation. The main morphological alteration seen during the development of the second-generation schizont was a reduction in the number of second-generation merozoites due to incomplete merogony, resulting in large masses of vacuolated residual cytoplasm. In places around the developing macrogamete the integrity of the parasitophorous vacuole was lost by either the host cell limiting membrane making contact with the parasite pellicle, or the disruption of one or both of these surfaces apparently brought about by the intervention of the host cell mitochondria. Thirty p.p.m. arprinocid reduced sporulation of the oocysts of E. brunetti and caused enlargement of the perinuclear space in the late merozoites and swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum around wall-forming bodies II.

The development of new etching and contact metallurgies for the ZnO/ZnMgO/ZnCdO materials system and various approaches for realizing ZnO LEDs are reviewed. ZnO nanorod MOSFETs and pH sensors have been demonstrated. In addition, selective detection of hydrogen with Pt-coated single ZnO nanorods is discussed discussed. The Pt-coated single nanorods show a current response approximately a factor of three larger at room temperature upon exposure to 500ppm H2 in N2 than thin films of ZnO. The power consumption of these sensors can be very small (in the nW range) when using discontinuous coatings of Pt. Once the Pt coating becomes continuous, the current required to operate the sensors increases to the μW range. The ZnO nanorods are insensitive to oxygen in the measurement ambient.

Single ZnO nanowire metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) were fabricated using nanowires grown by site selective Molecular Beam Epitaxy. When measured in the dark at 25°C, the depletion-mode transistors exhibit good saturation behavior, a threshold voltage of ∼-3V and a maximum transconductance of order 0.3 mS/mm. Under ultra-violet (366nm) illumination, the drain-source current increase by approximately a factor of 5 and the maximum transconductance is ∼ 5 mS/mm. The channel mobility is estimated to be ∼3 cm2 /V.s, which is comparable to that reported for thin film ZnO enhancement mode MOSFETs and the on/off ratio was ∼25 in the dark and ∼125 under UV illumination.

Background
Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) is associated with interstitial deletions of chromosome 22q11. About 30% of patients with VCFS have psychosis, and the rate of these deletions in schizophrenia has been reported to be about 1%. Even higher rates of VCFS deletions have been reported for childhood-onset schizophrenia.
AimsTo test the hypothesis that there is an increased rate of VCFS among patients with early-onset psychosis (age at onset < 18 years). We screened 192 early-onset patients and 329 patients with adult-onset schizophrenia.
MethodWe genotyped the patients and 444 healthy controls for hemizygosity of five microsatellite markers and one single nucleotide polymorphism that map to the 22q11-deleted region.
ResultsOne patient had a VCFS deletion, confirmed with semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. None of the controls showed a pattern of genotypes consistent with hemizygosity.
ConclusionsVCFS may be less frequent among patients with psychosis than previously suggested; this rate is not increased among early-onset patients.

Existing semiconductor electronic and photonic devices utilize the charge on electrons and holes in order to perform their specific functionality such as signal processing or light emission. The relatively new field of semiconductor spintronics seeks, in addition, to exploit the spin of charge carriers in new generations of transistors, lasers and integrated magnetic sensors. The ability to control of spin injection, transport and detection leads to the potential for new classes of ultra-low power, high speed memory, logic and photonic devices. The utility of such devices depends on the availability of materials with practical (>300K) magnetic ordering temperatures. In this paper, we summarize recent progress in dilute magnetic semiconductors such as (Ga,Mn)N, (Ga,Mn)P and (Zn,Mn)O exhibiting room temperature ferromagnetism, the origins of the magnetism and its potential applications in novel devices such as spin-polarized light emitters and spin field effect transistors.

Silicon carbide (SiC) thin films are attractive for a wide range of applications ranging from microelectronic and opto-electronic devices to protective and tribological coatings. In this paper, we will demonstrate that silicon carbide films can be successfully deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique over large areas, with good uniformity in thickness, composition, and film-specific properties.
Amorphous SiC films were grown on silicon wafers of 75-mm diameter over a temperature range of 25 – 650°C using a KrF excimer laser at a wavelength 248 nm and a repetition rate of 100 Hz. The large-area uniform coverage was obtained by rastering the laser beam over the radius of a rotating SiC target of 90-mm diameter, while the substrate was rotated simultaneously. The uniformity of film composition over the 75-mm wafers was characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), while the crystallinity of films was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology of the films was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thickness of the coatings, and the index of refraction, n, along the wafer radii were measured optically using a spectrophotometer.
