Summary
ABSTRACT. This chapter is concerned with the aggregation of probability distributions in decision and risk analysis. Experts often provide valuable information regarding important uncertainties in decision and risk analyses because of the limited availability of hard data to use in those analyses. Multiple experts are often consulted in order to obtain as much information as possible, leading to the problem of how to combine or aggregate their information. Information may also be obtained from other sources such as forecasting techniques or scientific models. Because uncertainties are typically represented in terms of probability distributions, we consider expert and other information in terms of probability distributions. We discuss a variety of models that lead to specific combination methods. The output of these methods is a combined probability distribution, which can be viewed as representing a summary of the current state of information regarding the uncertainty of interest. After presenting the models and methods, we discuss empirical evidence on the performance of the methods. In the conclusion, we highlight important conceptual and practical issues to be considered when designing a combination process for use in practice.
Introduction
Expert judgments can provide useful information for forecasting, making decisions, and assessing risks. Such judgments have been used informally for many years. In recent years, the use of formal methods to combine expert judgments has become increasingly commonplace. Cooke (1991) reviews many of the developments over the years as attempts have been made to use expert judgments in various settings.

Nutrigenomics is the study of how constituents of the diet interact with genes, and their products, to alter phenotype and, conversely, how genes and their products metabolise these constituents into nutrients, antinutrients, and bioactive compounds. Results from molecular and genetic epidemiological studies indicate that dietary unbalance can alter gene–nutrient interactions in ways that increase the risk of developing chronic disease. The interplay of human genetic variation and environmental factors will make identifying causative genes and nutrients a formidable, but not intractable, challenge. We provide specific recommendations for how to best meet this challenge and discuss the need for new methodologies and the use of comprehensive analyses of nutrient–genotype interactions involving large and diverse populations. The objective of the present paper is to stimulate discourse and collaboration among nutrigenomic researchers and stakeholders, a process that will lead to an increase in global health and wellness by reducing health disparities in developed and developing countries.

Summary
There are three editions of the collected works of Stefan George. The eighteen-volume Gesamt-Ausgabe der Werke, endgültige Fassung was arranged by George himself, published by the Georg Bondi Verlag in Berlin between 1927 and 1934, and reprinted in a reduced format by the Küpper Verlag between 1964 and 1969. In 1958 the Küpper Verlag in Munich and Düsseldorf published the Werke. Ausgabe in zwei Bänden, edited by Robert Boehringer. This two-volume edition contains all the texts of the eighteen-volume edition, but not the illustrations and appendices of the original edition. The two-volume edition was reprinted with additional texts from George's literary estate (Nachlaß) in 1968, 1976, and, edited by Georg Peter Landmann, in 1984 by the Klett-Cotta Verlag in Stuttgart. Since the Werke: Ausgabe in zwei Bänden is the most accessible edition, references (by volume and page number) in this Companion, unless otherwise noted, are to this edition. Since 1982 the Klett-Cotta Verlag has been publishing a new edition with appendices, Sämtliche Werke in 18 Bänden, edited by Georg Peter Landmann and Ute Oelmann. To date, thirteen volumes have been published.
Unless otherwise noted, translations of the titles of George's volumes of poetry and of individual poems are taken from Olga Marx and Ernst Morwitz, trans., The Works of Stefan George: Rendered into English. 2nd, revised and enlarged edition (Chapel Hill, NC: U of North Carolina P, 1974).
George's journal Blätter für die Kunst, whose nominal editor was
C. A. Klein, was published between 1892 and 1919 in twelve volumes. Küpper Verlag published a complete reprint in six volumes with an introduction by Robert Boehringer in 1968. Unless otherwise noted, references in this Companion are to this edition and will be abbreviated BfdK, followed by volume number (and, where appropriate, issue number) and page number.

Stefan George (1868-1933) is along with Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Rainer Maria Rilke one of the pre-eminent German poets of the twentieth century. He also had an important, albeit controversial and provocative role in German cultural history. It is generally agreed that he played a significant part in the transition of German literature to Modernism, particularly in poetry. At the same time he was an outspoken critic of modernity. He believed that only an all-encompassing cultural renewal could save modern man. Although George is often linked with the l'art pour l'art movement, and although his artistic consciousness was formed by European aestheticism, his poetry and the writings that emerged from the poets and intellectuals he gathered around him in the George Circle are above all a scathing commentary on the political, social, and cultural situation in Germany at the turn of the century.
George, who was imbued with the idea of the poet as a prophet and priest, saw himself as the Messiah of a New Hellenism and a New Reich led by an intellectual and aesthetic elite consisting of men who were bonded together through their allegiance to a charismatic leader. Some of the values that George proclaimed, among them a glorification of power, of heroism and self-sacrifice, were seized upon by the National Socialists, and subsequently his writings and those of his circle were considered by some to be proto-fascist. It did not help his reputation that after the Second World War much of the criticism of his works was practiced by uncritical, hagiographic George worshippers. In recent years, however, there has been a renewed and unbiased interest among scholars and critics in George and his circle. The wide-ranging and original essays in this volume explore anew George's poetry and his contribution to Modernism, the relation between his vision of a New Reich and fascist ideology, and his importance as a cultural critic.

The objective of this paper is to discuss why Bayesian statistics are not used more in healthcare decision making and what might be done to increase the use of Bayesian methods. First, a case is made for why Bayesian analysis should be used more widely. Serious weaknesses of commonly used frequentist methods are discussed and contrasted with advantages of Bayesian methods. Next, the question of why Bayesian methods are not used more widely is addressed, considering both philosophical differences and practical issues. Contrary to what some might think, the practical issues are more important in this regard. Finally, some steps to encourage increased use of Bayesian methods in healthcare decision making are presented and discussed. These ideas are straightforward but are by no means trivial to implement, largely because it is difficult to fight tradition and make major paradigm shifts quickly. The primary needs are improved Bayesian training at the basic level (which means textbooks and other materials as well as training of those who teach at the basic level), procedures to make Bayesian analysis easier to understand and use (better software and standard methods for displaying and communicating Bayesian outputs will help here), and the education of decision makers about the advantages of Bayesian methods in important healthcare decision-making problems.

Summary
ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the separation of probability elicitation from utilities. We show that elicited probabilities can be related to utilities not just through the explicit or implicit payoffs related to the elicitation process, but also through other stakes the expert may have in the events of interest. We study three elicitation procedures – lotteries, scoring rules, and promissory notes – and show how the expert's utility function and stakes in the events can influence the resulting probabilities. Particularly extreme results are obtained in an example involving a market at equilibrium. The applicability of a no-stakes condition and some implications for probability elicitation are discussed. Let π represent an expert's probability for an event A, and let p denote the elicited probability from some elicitation procedure. We determine the value of p that maximizes the expert's expected utility. When utility is linear in money, p = π for all of the procedures studied here. Under nonlinear utility, the lottery procedure still yields p = π as long as the expert has no other stakes involving the occurrence or nonoccurrence of A (the no-stakes condition). With the scoring-rule and promissorynote procedures, the no-stakes condition is no longer sufficient for p = π in the presence of nonlinear utility. If the no-stakes condition holds and the elicitationrelated payoffs approach 0, then p = π in the limit. For all three procedures, the combination of nonlinear utility and other stakes can lead to values of p other than π.

An individual is repeatedly offered the opportunity to invest in a risky asset whose return distribution is unknown. Because the return distribution is constant over time, however, he is able to learn about that distribution by observing investment outcomes. Results are presented regarding the asymptotically optimal investment behavior of a risk-averse individual under these circumstances when his aim is to maximize the expected utility of his end-of-horizon wealth. For the class of isoelastic utility functions with constant relative risk averson less than one, the optimal investment approaches a constant proportion of wealth. The limiting proportion is the same as the proportion put up by the most optimistic individual when the investment opportunity is offered only once. These results are then extended by generalizing the class of utility functions under consideration and, at the same time, restricting the class of possible investment schemes. This paper is distinguished from the previous literature by the assumption of conditional independence of returns across periods.

Markets for exchange typically evolve over time, and the organized security exchanges in the United States have evolved in such a manner as to give specialists a major role as market makers. Specialists are responsible for maintaining a fair and orderly market in the securities listed on an exchange. They specify prices to reflect supply and demand and adjust these prices in response to shifts in supply and demand.
