Background
The prevalence of medical illnesses is high among patients with psychiatric disorders. The current study aimed to investigate multi-comorbidity in patients with psychiatric disorders in comparison to the general population. Secondary aims were to investigate factors associated with metabolic syndrome and treatment appropriateness of mental disorders.
MethodsThe sample included 54,826 subjects (64.73% females; 34.15% males; 1.11% nonbinary gender) from 40 countries (COMET-G study). The analysis was based on the registration of previous history that could serve as a fair approximation for the lifetime prevalence of various medical conditions.
ResultsAbout 24.5% reported a history of somatic and 26.14% of mental disorders. Mental disorders were by far the most prevalent group of medical conditions. Comorbidity of any somatic with any mental disorder was reported by 8.21%. One-third to almost two-thirds of somatic patients were also suffering from a mental disorder depending on the severity and multicomorbidity. Bipolar and psychotic patients and to a lesser extent depressives, manifested an earlier (15–20 years) manifestation of somatic multicomorbidity, severe disability, and probably earlier death. The overwhelming majority of patients with mental disorders were not receiving treatment or were being treated in a way that was not recommended. Antipsychotics and antidepressants were not related to the development of metabolic syndrome.
ConclusionsThe finding that one-third to almost two-thirds of somatic patients also suffered from a mental disorder strongly suggests that psychiatry is the field with the most trans-specialty and interdisciplinary value and application points to the importance of teaching psychiatry and mental health in medical schools and also to the need for more technocratically oriented training of psychiatric residents.

There are two major forms of long-term depression (LTD) of synaptic transmission in the central nervous system, which require activation of either N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) or metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs). In synapses in the perirhinal cortex we have directly compared the Ca2+ signalling mechanisms involved in NMDAR-LTD and mGluR-LTD. Whilst both forms of LTD involve Ca2+ release from intracellular stores the Ca2+ sensors involved are different; NMDAR-LTD involves calmodulin, whilst mGluR-LTD involves the neuronal Ca2+ sensor (NCS) protein NCS-1. In addition, there is a specific requirement for IP3 and PKC as well as protein interacting with C-kinase (PICK-1) in mGluR-LTD. NCS-1 binds directly to PICK1, via its BAR domain, in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Furthermore, the NCS-1-PICK1 association is stimulated by activation of mGluRs, but not NMDARs, and introduction of a PICK1 BAR domain fusion protein specifically blocks mGluR-LTD. Thus, NCS-1 is a component of a novel mechanism involved in mGluR-LTD.

Introduction
Adolescents’ Internet gaming disorders might influence on their social and psychological developmental tasks and physical health negatively. Depression is the commonly co-existed conditions with addictive Internet gaming, but not much research has been reported whether depressive symptoms would precede the addictive Internet gaming in this population.
ObjectivesThis prospective observation study was performed to make clear whether adolescents’ depressive symptoms precede their addictive Internet gaming.
AimsAdolescents’ 1-year incidence of the addictive Internet gaming was calculated, and test their depressive symptoms increase the incidence.
MethodsIn Korea, whole students of the 1st grade in three middle schools were participated in this study. Baseline assessment of 508 students was performed via standardized self-reported questionnaire on May–June, 2015. Internet game use-elicited symptom screen (IGUESS) was used to addictive Internet gaming conditions. IGUESS is the 9-itemed DSM-5 diagnostic criteria-based instrument to screen high risk of Internet gaming disorders. Depressive symptoms was measured by Child Depression Inventory (CDI) group. One year after the baseline assessment, follow-up assessment was performed. Four hundred and forty-eight students have been participated in the 1-year check up without addictive Internet gaming at baseline.
ResultsIn total, 4.7% of subjects had depressive symptoms at baseline, and incidence of addictive Internet gaming was 9.2%. After adjusted by sex, Internet game use per week, and self-control status, depressive symptoms of baseline increased the 1-year incidence of addictive Internet gaming significantly (OR = 3.5, P = 0.034).
ConclusionsDepressive adolescents have higher possibility they could experience the addictive Internet gaming.

We describe an algorithm that can fit the properties of the dwarf galaxy progenitor of a tidal stream, given the properties of that stream. We show that under ideal conditions (the Milky Way potential, the orbit of the dwarf galaxy progenitor, and the functional form of the dwarf galaxy progenitor are known exactly), the density and angular width of stars along the stream can be used to constrain the mass and radial profile of both the stellar and dark matter components of the progenitor dwarf galaxy that was ripped apart to create the stream. Our provisional fit for the parameters of the dwarf galaxy progenitor of the Orphan Stream indicates that it is less massive and has fewer stars than previous works have indicated.

A community-based program is increasingly recognized as promoting health and active social participation in one’s life, yet information is lacking about the use and impact of such programs among immigrant visible minority seniors. This mixed-method research evaluated the impact of a cultural community program for Korean immigrant seniors by examining participants’ health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) benefits and overall well-being. In this study, 79 participants completed the SF-36v2 questionnaire twice to assess the impact of Canada Enoch Senior’s College (CESC) program on their HR-QOL and well-being. Statistically significant improvement in physical and mental health domains was observed: bodily pain and role limitations due to emotional problems. Qualitative data from participants’ interviews supported the survey findings with positive contributions in health and social arenas of seniors’ lives. These results suggest that the CESC program contributes to quality of life and well-being of Korean senior participants and supports similar community-based cultural programs.

Objective
The present study aimed to compare the anti-biofilm activities of four commonly available antiseptic eardrops against biofilms from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and quinolone-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro.
MethodsThe anti-biofilm activities of 50 per cent Burow's solution, vinegar with water (1:1), 2 per cent acetic acid solution, and 4 per cent boric acid solution were evaluated using biofilm assays. Additionally, the anti-biofilm activities of the four antiseptic solutions against tympanostomy tube biofilms were compared using a scanning electron microscope.
ResultsThe inhibition of biofilm formation from methicillin-resistant S aureus and quinolone-resistant P aeruginosa occurred after treatment with 4 per cent boric acid solution, 2 per cent acetic acid solution, and vinegar with water (1:1). However, 50 per cent Burow's solution did not exhibit effective anti-biofilm activity.
ConclusionThe results indicate that 4 per cent boric acid solution and vinegar with water (1:1) are potent inhibitors of biofilms from methicillin-resistant S aureus and quinolone-resistant P aeruginosa, and provide safe pH levels for avoiding ototoxicity.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often complicated by depression and exemplifies the challenge in managing chronic illnesses that require active patient participation in care. In a clinical trial (NCT00151372), we compared a novel personalised intervention for depression and COPD (PID-C) targeting treatment adherence with treatment as usual (TAU). In 138 patients with major depression and severe COPD, PID-C led to a higher remission rate and a greater reduction in depressive symptoms and in dyspnoea-related disability than TAU over 28 weeks and 6 months after the last session. If replicated, PID-C may serve as a care model for patients with both depression and medical illnesses with a deteriorating course.

We demonstrate a very stable silver-coated mirror exploiting novel MgO/SiO2 double layers. It was found that the MgO/SiO2 protective layer provides a good adhesion and protection to the silver surface. Using epoxy-Ti(40 nm)-Ag(60 nm)-MgO(5~10 nm)-SiO2(25 nm) mirror structures, we achieved over 95% reflectivity and observed a minimal degradation in reflectance even after severe environmental tests.

Polymer-inorganic hybrid materials composed of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and zinc compounds were prepared by sol-gel in-situ transition polymerization of zinc complex in PMMA matrix. Zinc acetate dihydrate dissolved in ethanol was used as the inorganic precursor. Monoethanolamine (MEA) acted as a complexing agent to control the hydrolysis of zinc acetate to produce a zinc compound network, and then PMMA, formed in-situ through a radical polymerization, were chemically bonded to the forming zinc compound network to realize a hybrid material. Transparent homogenous hybrid materials with slight colours from pink to yellow were fabricated by varying the composition. TEM, FT-IR were employed to investigate structural and physical properties. The UV-shielding effect was evaluated by UV-VIS. The low content of zinc (around 0.02 wt%) and the fine particle size rendered it visibly transparent and capable of greatly attenuating UV radiation in the full UV range.

The DC and RF characteristics of In0.5Ga0.5P/In0.22Ga0.78As/GaAs MOS p-HEMTs with different gate oxide thickness were investigated and compared with those of Schottky-gate p-HEMT without the gate oxide layer. The oxide layer was implemented by using a liquid phase oxidation technique. It was found that transconductance (gm), threshold voltage and breakdown voltage characteristics of MOS p-HEMTs depended strongly on the gate oxide thickness. The MOS p-HEMTs showed superior DC and RF performances compared with those of GaAs-based MOSFET having oxide/n-GaAs or oxide/InGaAs interface.

Although significant advances have been made in the development of biocompatible materials, currently available biomaterials still present a number of problems for in vivo applications. One of the attempts to improve the biocompatibility, especially blood-compatibility, of biomaterials has been surface modification. Typically, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), albumin, heparin, and phospholipid molecules are grafted to the surface to prevent protein adsorption and cell adhesion. We have been modifying biomaterial surfaces by covalent grafting of PEG and albumin. The control and modified surfaces were examined using an atomic force microscope (AFM). In this study, we examined the surface topography changes by surface modification using PEO grafting to glass as a model system.
Glass surfaces were modified with PEO using (N-triethoxysilylpropyl)-Omonomethoxy PEG urethane (PEG-Si), a PEG derivative containing a hydrophobic carbon chain and triethoxysilyl group at one end of the PEG chain. The presence of the hydrophobic carbon chain allowed self-assembly on the surface and triethoxysilyl resulted in covalent bonding to glass surfaces

We present a novel technique to metallize high-aspect-ratio, small-dimension contact holes and via plugs for application to integrated circuits and packaging. The technique uses a laser-assisted process to deposit a thin film of aluminum from DMA1H, which forms a seed layer for subsequent selective CVD. The resistivity of the deposited aluminum is nearly that of the bulk metal, the contact resistivity is good (∼0.03 μΩ-cm2), and the morphology of the deposited film is comparable to that obtained with physical vapor deposition. This process has been used to fill via holes in a SiO2 substrate, and small-diameter (0.7 μm), high-aspect-ratio (3:1), aluminum plugs have been repeatedly formed without the incorporation of voids. A custom-made via chain structure was used to determine the via resistance (plug and contact), which was found to be 0.1 -0.3 Ω. Our technique opens a new process window for void-free high-aspect-ratio via and contact hole filling, and is particularly interesting in that it offers the potential to use aluminum or aluminum-copper in plug metallization.
