Objective:
Few concussion studies have investigated the psychological domain of concussions. Of the 22 postconcussion symptoms assessed on the Graded Symptom Checklist of the SCAT-5, five do not overlap with core symptoms of anxiety and depression. 43% of patients report at least one psychiatric symptom, the median is four after injury. Previous studies focus on total scores and not individual items; furthermore, few consider resilience as part of psychological factors that impact recovery. This research aims to describe general and specific characteristics of psychological functioning in males/females ages 12-18 after concussion to help guide treatment. We compared total scores for each measure between males/females and looked at the differences between the genders for individual items in each measure.
Participants and Methods:Participants were evaluated at an outpatient concussion clinic participating in the North Texas Concussion Registry (ConTex; N=1238, 53% female, mean age=15.4 years, SD=1.16 years). The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale (GAD-7, the Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8), the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to determine levels of anxiety, depression, resilience, and sleep quality.
Results:Utilizing Mann-Whitney U tests (median, interquartile range) to examine group distributions for the GAD-7, PHQ-8, and BRS, females had significantly higher scores than males for the GAD (p<0.001; Female: 4, 1-9 v. Male: 2, 0-5) and PHQ (p<0.001; Female: 5, 210 v. Male: 3, 1-7). For the BRS, total scores for females were significantly lower than males (p<0.001; Female: 3.67, 3-4 v. Male: 3.83, 3.214.33). The PSQI media score was significantly different between males and females: item 2, p=.016 and item 4 p=.007 using an exact sampling distribution for U. Pearson Chi square tests were used to examine sex differences for each item of the psychological measures. Items 1-7 within the GAD-7 were significant between sexes (i.e. male or female). The seven items assess (1) Feelings of nervousness, (2) Inability to stop/control worry, (3) Worrying too much about different things, (4) Trouble relaxing, (5) Inability to sit still due to restlessness, (6) Irritability, and (7) Feeling afraid. Items 2-8 within the PHQ were significant between sexes. The items assess (2) Feeling down/depressed/hopeless, (3) Trouble falling/staying asleep, (4) Feeling tired/no energy, (5) Appetite changes, (6) Lowered/poor self-esteem, (7) Concentration issues, and (8) Feeling slowed down or unable to be still. There was a statistically significant difference between genders and Items 2 and 4 within the BRS were significant between sexes. The items assess (2) Difficulty surviving hard times and (4) Difficulty snapping back from something bad.
Conclusions:Like other studies, this study found females have higher levels of negative affect (i.e., depressive and anxious symptoms). Females displayed lower resilience and reported poorer sleep. By analyzing psychiatric measures, treatment protocols can be tailored to address specific problems, and mental health difficulties can be mitigated by teaching specific coping techniques. These results suggest clinicians should consistently be providing education on depression, anxiety, sleep, and resilience, particularly to female patients, who appear at greater risk for psychological distress.

Several herbicides were sprayed on emerged London rocket (Sisymbrium irio L.), common sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), ragweed parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus L.), annual sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus L.), and onion (Allium cepa L. ‘yellow granex PRR’), to determine selectivity. Onion yields were reduced with common sunflower and London rocket interference within 7 weeks after emergence. Oxadiazon [2-tert-butyl-4-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-δ2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one] at 2.2 kg/ha controlled all but common sunflower under most field conditions and reduced the yield of onion in one experiment out of six. Methazole [2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolidine-3,5-dione] and bromoxynil (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile) reduced the yields of onion in two of four experiments and three of six experiments, respectively. Both herbicides controlled most weed species, but only bromoxynil controlled annual sunflower adequately. Onion was injured when low temperature, low light intensity, and high relative humidity occurred within 3 days of the application of herbicides. Bioassays showed that oxadiazon persisted 5 months in soil in three of five experiments. Seeded London rocket populations reduced the growth of onion 20% within the first 4 weeks and 65% within 12 weeks after planting.

Bensulide [0,0-diisopropyl phosphorodithioate S-ester with N-(2-mercaptoethyl)benzenesulfonamide] and trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluroro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) were incorporated to a depth of 2.5 and 7.5 cm in sandy loam soil on the same plots in three annual applications to study the effect of incorporation depth on movement and persistence of the herbicides in furrow-irrigated soil. Bioassays and gas-liquid chromatographic assays indicated that, regardless of rainfall, both herbicides remained within the original soil zones of incorporation. Trifluralin persisted longer in soil as depth of incorporation was increased. Neither bensulide at 4.5 or 9.0 kg/ha nor trifluralin at 1.1 kg/ha persisted in appreciable amounts 12 months after treatment. At these rates, significant residues of bensulide and trifluralin were detected after 6 months only when tillage was restricted. Herbicide concentrations that persisted 6 months as determined in laboratory assays caused severe reduction in growth of field-grown sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench].

Absorption coefficient (k), infinite reflectance (Ri), and scattering coefficient (s) were tabulated for five wavelengths and analyzed for statistical differences for seven weed species. The wavelengths were: 0.55 μm, 0.65 μm, 0.85 μm, 1.65 μm, and 2.20 μm. The Ri of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.], and annual sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus L.) leaves at the 0.85-μm wavelength were significantly (p = 0.05) higher than for sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), ragweed parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus L.), or London rocket (Sisymbrium irio L.). Annual sowthistle had the largest k value, and Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats.) had the smallest k value at the 0.65-μm chlorophyll absorption wavelength. In general, johnsongrass, ragweed parthenium, or London rocket had the largest s values among the five wavelengths, whereas annual sowthistle and Palmer amaranth were usually lowest.

The goal of this work is to report a novel assay that preserves antigenicity of extracts with high protease content without using enzymatic inhibitors. A great reduction of proteolytic activity in the insoluble chloroform/methanol and heated amoebic fraction (IC[ratio ]MC) was obtained by this method, even in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate and 2-mercaptoethanol. The substrates azo-casein and the hide powder azure were used to determine the reduction of proteolytic activity of IC[ratio ]MC compared with the activity of crude extract and crude extract with iodoacetamide. The IC[ratio ]MC SDS-PAGE pattern shows a higher quantity of bands than extract with the inhibitor iodoacetamide or than crude extract. In addition, anti-Entamoeba histolytica antibodies from amoebic liver abscess patients recognized a richer antigenic Western blot pattern in the IC[ratio ]MC fraction than in crude extract alone or with inhibitor. The described method has proved to be suitable to preserve amoebic antigens for its use in diagnostic tests and it can be used for immunological response studies against E. histolytica antigens. Furthermore we propose that this method to obtain the IC[ratio ]MC fraction can be applied for the study of other microorganisms or cells with high enzymatic content.
