Objective:
Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a dementia syndrome characterized by initial development of progressive language deficits in the absence of impairment in other cognitive domains. It has historically been difficult to assess the presence or nature of true memory deficits in this population due to interference from language disturbance on task performance. The Three Words Three Shapes test (3W3S) is a relatively easy memory task that evaluates both verbal and nonverbal memory within the same modality and assesses different aspects of memory, including incidental encoding, effortful encoding, delayed recall, and recognition. Persons with PPA show a material-specific dissociation in performance on 3W3S; specifically, deficits in incidental encoding and recall are limited to verbal, not nonverbal material, in PPA, with preserved recognition of both types of information. However, it is unknown whether this pattern persists over time as the disease progresses.
Participants and Methods:Participants were 73 participants enrolled in an observational PPA research study at the Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease (Mage = 66.75 years, SD = 6.77; Meducation = 16.11 years, SD = 2.38; 51% female). Participants were subtyped as semantic (n = 15), logopenic (n = 27), or agrammatic PPA (n = 31) based on Gorno-Tempini et al., 2011, using 3W3S and other neuropsychological measures as described previously. Participants were followed at 2-year intervals and tests were administered longitudinally. All participants in the current study had 3W3S scores from at least two research visits collected between September 2012 and September 2022.
Results:There were no significant baseline group differences on 3W3S performance, except for better incidental encoding in the logopenic than the semantic group for shapes (p = .040) and words (p = .043). We then conducted a mixed measures ANOVAs to determine baseline within-person comparisons between words vs shapes. Within individuals, performance on incidental encoding, effortful encoding, and recognition was worse for words than shapes (ps < .01). There was an interaction between material and group for delayed recall (p < .001) such that there was a significantly larger discrepancy between word and shape recall in the semantic (Mdiff = -9.14) compared to logopenic (Mdiff = -3.07) and agrammatic groups (Mdiff = -2.13). Repeated measures ANOVAs determined changes in scores over time collapsed across PPA subtypes. Incidental encoding (ps = <.01), effortful encoding (ps < .05), and delayed recall (ps < .01) declined for both words and shapes over time. Copy and recognition of words (ps < .05), but not shapes declined over time.
Conclusions:The current results are consistent with prior findings of relative preservation of memory for nonverbal compared to verbal material in PPA as measured by 3W3S, especially in the semantic subtype. Learning and recall of words and shapes declined over time in all groups, whereas there was selective decline in copy and recognition of words compared to shapes. These results provide evidence of differential patterns of decline in certain aspects of memory over time in PPA and highlight the relative preservation of memory in this language-focused dementia even over time.

Objective:
Reaction time variability (RTV) has been estimated using Gaussian, ex-Gaussian, and diffusion model (DM) indices. Rarely have studies examined interrelationships among these performance indices in childhood, and the use of reaction time (RT) computational models has been slow to take hold in the developmental psychopathology literature. Here, we extend prior work in adults by examining the interrelationships among different model parameters in the ABCD sample and demonstrate how computational models of RT can clarify mechanisms of time-on-task effects and sex differences in RTs.
Method:This study utilized trial-level data from the stop signal task from 8916 children (9–10 years old) to examine Gaussian, ex-Gaussian, and DM indicators of RTV. In addition to describing RTV patterns, we examined interrelations among these indicators, temporal patterns, and sex differences.
Results:There was no one-to-one correspondence between DM and ex-Gaussian parameters. Nonetheless, drift rate was most strongly associated with standard deviation of RT and tau, while nondecisional processes were most strongly associated with RT, mu, and sigma. Performance worsened across time with changes driven primarily by decreasing drift rate. Boys were faster and less variable than girls, likely attributable to girls’ wide boundary separation.
Conclusions:Intercorrelations among model parameters are similar in children as has been observed in adults. Computational approaches play a crucial role in understanding performance changes over time and can also clarify mechanisms of group differences. For example, standard RT models may incorrectly suggest slowed processing speed in girls that is actually attributable to other factors.

Objective:
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), underscoring the urgent need for simple, efficient, and inexpensive methods to decontaminate masks and respirators exposed to severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We hypothesized that methylene blue (MB) photochemical treatment, which has various clinical applications, could decontaminate PPE contaminated with coronavirus.
Design:The 2 arms of the study included (1) PPE inoculation with coronaviruses followed by MB with light (MBL) decontamination treatment and (2) PPE treatment with MBL for 5 cycles of decontamination to determine maintenance of PPE performance.
Methods:MBL treatment was used to inactivate coronaviruses on 3 N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) and 2 medical mask models. We inoculated FFR and medical mask materials with 3 coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, and we treated them with 10 µM MB and exposed them to 50,000 lux of white light or 12,500 lux of red light for 30 minutes. In parallel, integrity was assessed after 5 cycles of decontamination using multiple US and international test methods, and the process was compared with the FDA-authorized vaporized hydrogen peroxide plus ozone (VHP+O3) decontamination method.
Results:Overall, MBL robustly and consistently inactivated all 3 coronaviruses with 99.8% to >99.9% virus inactivation across all FFRs and medical masks tested. FFR and medical mask integrity was maintained after 5 cycles of MBL treatment, whereas 1 FFR model failed after 5 cycles of VHP+O3.
Conclusions:MBL treatment decontaminated respirators and masks by inactivating 3 tested coronaviruses without compromising integrity through 5 cycles of decontamination. MBL decontamination is effective, is low cost, and does not require specialized equipment, making it applicable in low- to high-resource settings.

Background
Positive symptoms are a useful predictor of aggression in schizophrenia. Although a similar pattern of abnormal brain structures related to both positive symptoms and aggression has been reported, this observation has not yet been confirmed in a single sample.
MethodTo study the association between positive symptoms and aggression in schizophrenia on a neurobiological level, a prospective meta-analytic approach was employed to analyze harmonized structural neuroimaging data from 10 research centers worldwide. We analyzed brain MRI scans from 902 individuals with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia and 952 healthy controls.
ResultsThe result identified a widespread cortical thickness reduction in schizophrenia compared to their controls. Two separate meta-regression analyses revealed that a common pattern of reduced cortical gray matter thickness within the left lateral temporal lobe and right midcingulate cortex was significantly associated with both positive symptoms and aggression.
ConclusionThese findings suggested that positive symptoms such as formal thought disorder and auditory misperception, combined with cognitive impairments reflecting difficulties in deploying an adaptive control toward perceived threats, could escalate the likelihood of aggression in schizophrenia.

Background
While up to 45% of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have a comorbid psychiatric disorder, and antipsychotics are commonly prescribed, gender differences in the safety of antipsychotics have rarely been studied in this population.
AimsTo compare men and women with IDD on medical outcomes after antipsychotic initiation.
MethodOur population-based study in Ontario, Canada, compared 1457 women and 1951 men with IDD newly initiating antipsychotic medication on risk for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, venous thromboembolism, myocardial infarction, stroke and death, with up to 4 years of follow-up.
ResultsWomen were older and more medically complex at baseline. Women had higher risks for venous thromboembolism (HR 1.72, 95% CI 1.15–2.59) and death (HR 1.46, 95% CI 1.02–2.10) in crude analyses; but only thromboembolism risk was greater for women after covariate adjustment (aHR 1.58, 95% CI 1.05–2.38).
ConclusionsGender should be considered in decision-making around antipsychotic medications for individuals with IDD.

Two broad aims drive weed science research: improved management and improved understanding of weed biology and ecology. In recent years, agricultural weed research addressing these two aims has effectively split into separate subdisciplines despite repeated calls for greater integration. Although some excellent work is being done, agricultural weed research has developed a very high level of repetitiveness, a preponderance of purely descriptive studies, and has failed to clearly articulate novel hypotheses linked to established bodies of ecological and evolutionary theory. In contrast, invasive plant research attracts a diverse cadre of nonweed scientists using invasions to explore broader and more integrated biological questions grounded in theory. We propose that although studies focused on weed management remain vitally important, agricultural weed research would benefit from deeper theoretical justification, a broader vision, and increased collaboration across diverse disciplines. To initiate change in this direction, we call for more emphasis on interdisciplinary training for weed scientists, and for focused workshops and working groups to develop specific areas of research and promote interactions among weed scientists and with the wider scientific community.

Objective.
To compare the effects of hospital cleaning agents and germicides on the survival of epidemic Clostridium difficile strains.
Methods. We compared the activity of and effects of exposure to 5 cleaning agents and/or germicides (3 containing chlorine, 1 containing only detergent, and 1 containing hydrogen peroxide) on vegetative and spore forms of epidemic and non-epidemic C. difficile strains (3 of each). We carried out in vitro exposure experiments using a human fecal emulsion to mimic conditions found in situ.
Results.Cleaning agent and germicide exposure experiments yielded very different results for C. difficile vegetative cells, compared with those for spores. Working-strength concentrations of all of the agents inhibited the growth of C. difficile in culture. However, when used at recommended working concentrations, only chlorine-based germicides were able to inactivate C. difficile spores. C. difficile epidemic strains had a greater sporulation rate than nonepidemic strains. The mean sporulation rate, expressed as the proportion of a cell population that is in spore form, was 13% for all strains not exposed to any cleaning agent or germicide, and it was significantly increased by exposure to cleaning agents or germicides containing detergent alone (34%), a combination of detergent and hypochlorite (24%), or hydrogen peroxide (33%). By contrast, the mean sporulation rate did not change substantially after exposure to germicides containing either a combination of detergent and dichloroisocyanurate (9%) or dichloroisocyanurate alone (15%).
Conclusions. These results highlight differences in the activity of cleaning agents and germicides against C. difficile spores and the potential for some of these products to promote sporulation.
