Background
Studying phenotypic and genetic characteristics of age at onset (AAO) and polarity at onset (PAO) in bipolar disorder can provide new insights into disease pathology and facilitate the development of screening tools.
AimsTo examine the genetic architecture of AAO and PAO and their association with bipolar disorder disease characteristics.
MethodGenome-wide association studies (GWASs) and polygenic score (PGS) analyses of AAO (n = 12 977) and PAO (n = 6773) were conducted in patients with bipolar disorder from 34 cohorts and a replication sample (n = 2237). The association of onset with disease characteristics was investigated in two of these cohorts.
ResultsEarlier AAO was associated with a higher probability of psychotic symptoms, suicidality, lower educational attainment, not living together and fewer episodes. Depressive onset correlated with suicidality and manic onset correlated with delusions and manic episodes. Systematic differences in AAO between cohorts and continents of origin were observed. This was also reflected in single-nucleotide variant-based heritability estimates, with higher heritabilities for stricter onset definitions. Increased PGS for autism spectrum disorder (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), major depression (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), schizophrenia (β = −0.39 years, s.e. = 0.08), and educational attainment (β = −0.31 years, s.e. = 0.08) were associated with an earlier AAO. The AAO GWAS identified one significant locus, but this finding did not replicate. Neither GWAS nor PGS analyses yielded significant associations with PAO.
ConclusionsAAO and PAO are associated with indicators of bipolar disorder severity. Individuals with an earlier onset show an increased polygenic liability for a broad spectrum of psychiatric traits. Systematic differences in AAO across cohorts, continents and phenotype definitions introduce significant heterogeneity, affecting analyses.

Introduction
Psychotic disorders often cause a drastic change in the life situation of the affected individual. Personality is an aspect that can affect the symptoms and social function in psychotic disorders.
ObjectivesNo study has examined stability of personality traits exceeding five years in patients with schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to investigate the stability of personality traits over a 13-year period among patients with psychotic disorder and healthy individuals and to evaluate case-control differences.
MethodsAt three occasions during a 13-year period patients with psychotic disorders (n=28) and non-psychotic individuals (n=57) completed Swedish universities Scales of Personality (SSP). For all the individuals within- and between-subject analyses were performed at three occasions for all 13 subscales and the three overall factors of SSP. Correlations, means and SDs were calculated.
ResultsTests of within-subject correlations showed differences in two subscales: Lack of Assertiveness, which were influenced by age and Physical Trait Aggression, where patients ratings were stable, whereas controls rated themselves less aggressive at higher age. Between-subjects correlations showed differences regarding any of the parameters diagnosis, time, age, gender or age x gender in nine of the 13 subscales as well as in factor Neuroticism.
ConclusionsLong term follow-up showed a generally high stability of personality traits measured with SSP, especially among patients. Between-subject analyses over the 13 years showed that patients differed compared to controls for the SSP factor Neuroticism as well as the subscale Detachment, which is in accordance with previous studies.

Introduction
Although schizophrenia was previously associated with affected spatial neuronal synchronization, surprisingly little is known about the temporal dynamics of neuronal oscillations in schizophrenia. However, since coordination of neuronal process in time represents an essential aspect of practically all cognitive processes, it might be strongly affected in schizophrenia patients.
ObjectivesTo test the hypothesis of abnormal temporal neuronal dynamics in patients with schizophrenia.
AimsWe aimed at quantification and comparisons of long-range temporal correlations (LRTCs) in patients and normal subjects.
MethodsWe measured 21 patients with schizophrenia (n = 18) or schizoaffective disorder (n = 3) and 28 age and gender matched controls. Ongoing neuronal oscillations were recorded with multi-channel EEG at rest condition. EEG was analyzed with spectral analysis and with the detrended fluctuation analysis allowing quantification of LRTCs.
ResultsThe amplitude of neuronal oscillations in alpha and beta frequency ranges did not differ between the patients and controls. However, LRTCs were strongly attenuated in schizophrenia patients: in centro-parietal areas and fronto-central areas for alpha and beta oscillations, respectively. In addition we observed a negative correlation between the strength of the negative symptoms and LRTCs.
ConclusionsSmall values of LRTCs and their correlation with the negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients demonstrate that the temporal dynamics of neuronal oscillations are essential for normal brain functioning. Attenuated LRTCs might indicate a more intermittent neuronal dynamics possibly allowing for more random associations between neuronal activations, which in turn might relate to the occurrence of positive symptoms in schizophrenia.

Introduction
Early environmental risk factors have a role in the development of violent behaviour in adulthood.
AimsThe aim of the study was to assess the impact of childhood trauma, expressed violent behaviour as a child, co morbid personality disorder and substance abuse on self reported interpersonal violence as an adult in suicide attempters.
MethodsA total of 161 suicide attempters were diagnosed with SCID I and II and assessed with the Karolinska Interpersonal Violence Scale (KIVS) measuring exposure to violence and expressed violent behaviour in childhood (between 6-14 years of age) and during adult life (15 years or older). A standard linear regression analyses was conducted with the two predictive KIVS subscales exposure to violence as a child and expressed violent behaviour as a child, Axis 1 mood and anxiety disorder diagnosis, co morbid substance abuse diagnosis, co morbid personality disorder diagnosis, age and gender as predictors of expressed interpersonal violence as an adult.
ResultsThe regression model was significant with adjusted R square 0.22, F ratio 7.2, DF=7, p< 0.0001. Expressed violent behaviour as a child and personality disorder were significant predictors of expressed interpersonal violence as an adult. Broken down by gender expressed violent behaviour as a child was a significant predictor of violence as an adult in both men and women, whereas exposure to violence as a child and personality disorder predicted violence as an adult only in men.
ConclusionsIt is important to take into account expressed violent behaviour in childhood in violence risk assessments.

Aims
Dissociation is a common feature of PTSD and neurobiological evidence distinguish it from nondissociative PTSD. The aim of this study is to investigate brain functional and structural alterations associated with dissociative traits along a continuum in a group of traumatized subjects either developing or non-developing PTSD.
MethodsAmong 32 traumatized subjects with and without clinical diagnosis of PTSD we identified two subgroups based on the amount of dissociative traits as investigated by Dissociative Experience Scale (DES). Ten subjects had high dissociative traits (D) and 22 lower (ND). MRI and SPECT scans were performed to investigate structural and functional differences, respectively, between subgroups. Statistical Parametric Mapping was implemented for statistical analysis.
ResultsD vs ND comparison showed significant Gray Matter volume (GMV) increases in the right prefrontal cortex, inferior parietal lobule and temporal pole (comprising adjacent parahippocampal gyrus) and in bilateral medial prefrontal cortex. ND vs D comparison showed a significant GMV reduction in D subjects in the right striatum. By regressing GMV against DES scores, we found a significant positive correlation, largely superimposing to the regions identified by the D vs ND contrast, in bilateral prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortex and temporal poles and in the right inferior parietal lobule. No significant differences were found at SPECT.
ConclusionsSignificant structural differences were found between D and ND in prefrontal and anterior temporal cortex in which GM highly correlated with DES scores suggesting a strong neurobiological ground for dissociation and the involvement of such structures in its processing.
Postmortem observations on rumen wall histology and gene expression and ruminal and caecal content of beef cattle fattened on barley-based rations

Sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA) can reduce the production efficiency and impair the welfare of cattle, potentially in all production systems. The aim of this study was to characterise measurable postmortem observations from divergently managed intensive beef finishing farms with high rates of concentrate feeding. At the time of slaughter, we obtained samples from 19 to 20 animals on each of 6 beef finishing units (119 animals in total) with diverse feeding practices, which had been subjectively classified as being high risk (three farms) or low risk (three farms) for SARA on the basis of the proportions of barley, silage and straw in the ration. We measured the concentrations of histamine, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), lactate and other short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in ruminal fluid, LPS and SCFA in caecal fluid. We also took samples of the ventral blind sac of the rumen for histopathology, immunohistopathology and gene expression. Subjective assessments were made of the presence of lesions on the ruminal wall, the colour of the lining of the ruminal wall and the shape of the ruminal papillae. Almost all variables differed significantly and substantially among farms. Very few pathological changes were detected in any of the rumens examined. The animals on the high-risk diets had lower concentrations of SCFA and higher concentrations of lactate and LPS in the ruminal fluid. Higher LPS concentrations were found in the caecum than the rumen but were not related to the risk status of the farm. The diameters of the stratum granulosum, stratum corneum and of the vasculature of the papillae, and the expression of the gene TLR4 in the ruminal epithelium were all increased on the high-risk farms. The expression of IFN-γ and IL-1β and the counts of cluster of differentiation 3 positive and major histocompatibility complex class two positive cells were lower on the high-risk farms. High among-farm variation and the unbalanced design inherent in this type of study in the field prevented confident assignment of variation in the dependent variables to individual dietary components; however, the CP percentage of the total mixed ration DM was the factor that was most consistently associated with the variables of interest. Despite the strong effect of farm on the measured variables, there was wide inter-animal variation.
Prefrontal cortical thinning links to negative symptoms in schizophrenia via the ENIGMA consortium

Background
Our understanding of the complex relationship between schizophrenia symptomatology and etiological factors can be improved by studying brain-based correlates of schizophrenia. Research showed that impairments in value processing and executive functioning, which have been associated with prefrontal brain areas [particularly the medial orbitofrontal cortex (MOFC)], are linked to negative symptoms. Here we tested the hypothesis that MOFC thickness is associated with negative symptom severity.
MethodsThis study included 1985 individuals with schizophrenia from 17 research groups around the world contributing to the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group. Cortical thickness values were obtained from T1-weighted structural brain scans using FreeSurfer. A meta-analysis across sites was conducted over effect sizes from a model predicting cortical thickness by negative symptom score (harmonized Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms or Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale scores).
ResultsMeta-analytical results showed that left, but not right, MOFC thickness was significantly associated with negative symptom severity (βstd = −0.075; p = 0.019) after accounting for age, gender, and site. This effect remained significant (p = 0.036) in a model including overall illness severity. Covarying for duration of illness, age of onset, antipsychotic medication or handedness weakened the association of negative symptoms with left MOFC thickness. As part of a secondary analysis including 10 other prefrontal regions further associations in the left lateral orbitofrontal gyrus and pars opercularis emerged.
ConclusionsUsing an unusually large cohort and a meta-analytical approach, our findings point towards a link between prefrontal thinning and negative symptom severity in schizophrenia. This finding provides further insight into the relationship between structural brain abnormalities and negative symptoms in schizophrenia.
Cortical folding in Broca's area relates to obstetric complications in schizophrenia patients and healthy controls

Background
The increased occurrence of obstetric complications (OCs) in patients with schizophrenia suggests that alterations in neurodevelopment may be of importance to the aetiology of the illness. Abnormal cortical folding may reflect subtle deviation from normal neurodevelopment during the foetal or neonatal period. In the present study, we hypothesized that OCs would be related to cortical folding abnormalities in schizophrenia patients corresponding to areas where patients with schizophrenia display altered cortical folding when compared with healthy controls.
MethodIn total, 54 schizophrenia patients and 54 healthy control subjects underwent clinical examination and magnetic resonance image scanning on a 1.5 T scanner. Information on OCs was collected from original birth records. An automated algorithm was used to calculate a three-dimensional local gyrification index (lGI) at numerous points across the cortical mantle.
ResultsIn both schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, an increasing number of OCs was significantly related to lower lGI in the left pars triangularis (p<0.0005) in Broca's area. For five other anatomical cortical parcellations in the left hemisphere, a similar trend was demonstrated. No significant relationships between OCs and lGI were found in the right hemisphere and there were no significant case–control differences in lGI.
ConclusionsThe reduced cortical folding in the left pars triangularis, associated with OCs in both patients and control subjects suggests that the cortical effect of OCs is caused by factors shared by schizophrenia patients and healthy controls rather than factors related to schizophrenia alone.
Optical SED models of galaxy mergers

I discuss recent work in which we construct models of poststarburst galaxies by combining fully three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy mergers with radiative transfer calculations of dust attenuation. The poststarburst signatures can occur shortly after a bright starburst phase in gas-rich mergers, and thus offer a unique opportunity to study the formation of bulges and the effects of feedback. Several additional applications of spatially-resolved spectroscopic models of interacting galaxies include multi-wavelength studies of AGN/starburst diagnostics, mock integral field unit data to interpret the evolution of ULIRGs, and the ‘Green Valley’.

Introduction
Communication and information are cornerstones of management during major incidents and disasters. To support medical command and control, the Web-based support system called Paratus Major Incident can be used. The Paratus Major Incident system can provide management staff with online information from the incident area, and support management and patient handling at both single and mass-casualty incidents. The purpose of the Web-based information technology (IT) system is to ensure communication and information between the medical management at the scene, hospital management, and regional medical command and control (gold level).
ExperiencesIn the region of Östergötland, Sweden, Paratus Major Incident system is used in operating topics such as: (1) information dissemination from the incident area; (2) communication between prehospital, regional, and hospital management; (3) continuous updates between the dispatch centre and medical commanders at all levels; (4) digital log-files for medical management and patient records; (4) database used for follow-up studies and quality control.
ResultsDuring 2,161 incidents, 746 “first incident reports” from ambulance on scene were sent to regional medical command and control within 2 minutes. Four hundred and fifty-six “verification reports” were sent within 10 minutes. During 15 incidents, the designated duty officer on regional level confirmed “major incident” directly via the digital system, thereby notifying all arriving ambulance resources and involved medical managements.
ConclusionThis Web-based IT system successfully has been used daily within prehospital management since 2005. The system includes medical command and control at the regional level and all involved hospitals in a major incident.

In a joint Nordic effort, a high-quality climate data set for the Nordic Arctic is established. The data set consists of monthly values from 20 stations in Greenland, Iceland, the Faeroes, and the Norwegian Arctic. The data set is made available on the web. Ten climate elements are included, and most of the series covers the period 1890–2000. The data series illustrate the large climatic contrasts in the Nordic Arctic, and demonstrate that parts of the region have experienced substantial climate variations during the last century. Despite increasing temperatures during recent decades, the present temperature level is still lower than in the 1930s and 1950s in large parts of the region. The pattern of long-term precipitation variations is more complicated, but in parts of the region the annual precipitation has increased substantially. At Svalbard Airport and Bjørnøya the annual precipitation has increased by more than 2.5% per decade during the twentieth century.
Variations in atmospheric circulation can account for most of the long-term positive trend in precipitation in the Norwegian Arctic, and also for the positive temperature trend from the 1960s. The positive temperature trend before 1930 and the negative trend during the following decades, are, however, not accounted for by the circulation models.

We discuss our ongoing project analyzing N-body/smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations of isolated and merging galaxies, performed using GADGET-2 (Springel 2005), with the 3-D adaptive grid, polychromatic Monte Carlo radiative transfer code SUNRISE (Jonsson 2006). We apply commonly used UV, optical, and IR star formation rate (SFR) indicators to the integrated spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the simulated galaxies in order to determine how well the SFR indicators recover the instantaneous SFR in the simulations. The models underlying each SFR indicator must necessarily make assumptions about physical properties of the galaxies, e.g., the star formation history (SFH), whereas all such properties are known in the simulations. This enables us to test and compare SFR indicators in a way that is complementary to observational studies. We present one preliminary result of interest: even after correcting the Hα luminosity for dust using the Calzetti et al. (2000) attenuation law the SFR is significantly underestimated for simulated galaxies with SFR ≳ 10 M⊙ yr−1.
Enterotoxigenic enteric bacteria in foods and outbreaks of food-borne diseases in Sweden

All of 86 foods routinely examined for potentially pathogenic enteric bacteria were found to harbour one or more coliform species. None of the strains isolated produced heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) or showed invasive properties. The suckling mouse test indicated that one strain of Escherichia coli produced heat-stable enterotoxin (ST). Twelve incidents of suspected food poisoning were also investigated. In two of them the foods examined contained LT-producing strains of E. coli and in two there were LT-producing strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae. The counts of viable enterotoxigenic micro-organisms in these foods were 3000–30 000 E. coli/g and 50 000 to 1 million K. pneumoniae/g. The dominant symptom in all the incidents was watery diarrhoea. These seem to be the first reported cases of foodborne enterotoxigenic enteric bacteria in Europe. Though enterotoxigenic E. coli and related gram-negative enterotoxin-producing species are rare in correctly handled food in Sweden, these micro-organisms should be searched for when outbreaks of food poisoning are investigated.

Objective:
We report the first case in the English literature of a patulous eustachian tube occurring after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery for obesity.
Method:Case report of a 44-year-old woman who was referred to our ENT clinic complaining of autophonia and bilateral aural fullness. The patient had noticed these symptoms after she had undergone a laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery to aid weight loss.
Result:On the basis of the medical history, clinical examination and immittance measurement (revealing a change in acoustic immittance synchronous with normal breathing in the right ear), a diagnosis of patulous eustachian tube was made, more severe in the right ear than the left.
Conclusion:We report a case of patulous eustachian tube occurring after laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery for weight loss, which could be considered as one of the possible complications of this surgery. Our patient began to notice the symptoms of patulous eustachian tube after a 20 kg weight loss.

Summary
Growth and survival of photosynthetic carbon autotrophs, such as lichens, are primarily limited by their photosynthetic carbon assimilation minus carbon dioxide (CO2) losses related to growth and maintenance respiration. The absolute, as well as the relative, rates of these two processes will hence determine their capacity to grow. In lichens, both photosynthesis (P) and respiration (R) are strongly constrained by prevailing environmental conditions, particularly water and light. There is also a variation in inherent P and R capacities among species and individuals. Significant progress has been made during the last two decades in understanding how such variations in external conditions and internal capacities affect lichen growth (Boucher and Nash 1990a; Muir et al. 1997; Sundberg et al. 1997, 2001; Hyvärinen and Crittenden 1998b; Palmqvist and Sundberg 2000; Hilmo and Holien 2002; Dahlman and Palmqvist 2003; Hyvärinen et al. 2003; Gaio-Oliveira et al. 2004a, 2006; Gauslaa 2006; Gauslaa et al. 2006b; Palmqvist and Dahlman 2006), including re-establishment of vegetative propagules (Hilmo and Sastad 2001; Hilmo and Ott 2002). This progress has been driven by the development of transplantation techniques in combination with more mechanistically oriented studies, knowledge that has further been used to formulate both conceptual (Palmqvist 2000) and more mechanistically oriented models (Link et al. 1985; Palmqvist and Sundberg 2000; Dahlman and Palmqvist 2003). Such models are useful for the direction of future research towards more explicit hypothesis testing, and could also be adopted to predict how environmental changes may affect particular lichen species, or compare species' abilities to utilize and acclimate to varying environmental conditions.
Biopotency of vitamin E in barley

1. Investigations were carried out to establish the total biopotency of the natural vitamin E isomers in barley compared with that of DL-α-tocopheryl acetate.
2. The chick was used as an experimental animal. Prevention of nutritional encephalomalacia (NE) and chick liver-storage and plasma-storage assays of vitamin E were the methods used in the study. The individual tocopherols and tocotrienols, both in the tissue samples and in the grain and barley oil, were analysed using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection. The diagnosis of NE was based on careful clinical and histopathological observations.

It can be concluded from the results that full protection against NE in the chicks was obtained with a supplementation level of 7.5 mg DL-α-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet (i.e. a total vitamin E content of 11.20 mg/kg diet) or with a supplement of 8.7 g barley oil/kg diet (i.e. a total vitamin E content of 22.99 mg from barley oil/kg diet). This gave a biopotency factor of 0.49 for barley for prevention of NE of the chicks, as compared to that of DL-α-tocopheryl acetate.
4. Using regression analysis a statistically linear relationship could be observed between the total dietary vitamin E level and the response, as measured by the total vitamin E content in the liver and plasma, both in the groups supplemented with DL-a-tocopheryl acetate and in the groups supplemented with corresponding amounts of vitamin E in barley oil. The liver and plasma responses to the total vitamin E in the barley-oil diet compared with those of the DL-a-tocopheryl acetate reference diet gave identical values for the regression coefficients, i.e. in both liver-storage and plasma-storage assays the value for slopes of dose-response lines was 0.37. This means that the biopotency of the total vitamin E in barley was 37% of that of dietary DL-a-tocopheryl acetate. Thus, barley is not as rich a source of vitamin E as could be supposed on the basis of the chemical determination of its total vitamin E content.

It was possible to verify this experimentally established biopotency of 0.37 for the total vitamin E in barley by converting the chemically determined amounts of the vitamin E isomers in barley into DL-α-tocopheryl acetate equivalents by multiplying them with internationally accepted potency factors for the individual natural isomers (DL-α-tocopheryl acetate 1.00, D-α-tocopherol 1.49, D-β-tocopherol 0.60, D-gamma;-tocopherol 0.1 5, D-α-tocotrienol 0.37).
6. In spite of the high proportion of α- and β-tocotrienols in the barley-oil diets (about 60% of the total vitamin E content), only traces of these isomers could be detected in the plasma and none could be detected in the liver. On the other hand, calculation of the individual hiopotencies for the different isomers in the barley-oil diet by comparing the dose responses, diet: liver, separately for each isomer with those of DL-α-tocopheryl acetate, resulted in biopotency values for α- and β-tocopherol which were twice as high as the internationally accepted conversion factors. These results of the present study tempted the authors to draw the conclusion that there may have been a chemical reduction of the α- and β-tocotrienols to the corresponding tocopherols before entering the liver.
