Objective:
The prevalence of ADHD diagnoses more than doubled in VA settings between 2009 and 2016 (Hale et al., 2020). However, attentional difficulties are not exclusive to ADHD and can also be seen in non-neurodevelopmental disorders, including depression, anxiety, substance use, and PTSD (Marshall et al., 2018, Suhr et al., 2008). Further, patients can easily feign symptoms of ADHD with few available instruments for accurate detection (Robinson & Rogers, 2018). Given the significant symptom overlap and rising rates of reported ADHD among Veterans, accurate detection of feigned ADHD is essential.
This study examined the utility of the experimental Dissimulation ADHD scale (Ds-ADHD; Robinson & Rogers, 2018) on the MMPI-2, in detecting feigned ADHD presentation within a mixed sample of Veterans.
Participants and Methods:In this retrospective study, 173 Veterans (Mage = 36.18, SDage = 11.10, Medu = 14.01, SDedu = 2.11, 88% male, 81% White, and 17% Black) were referred for neuropsychological evaluation of ADHD that included the MMPI-2 and up to 10 PVTs. Participants were assigned to a credible group (n=146) if they passed all PVTs or a non-credible group (n=27) if they failed two or more PVTs. Group assignment was also clinically confirmed. The Ds-ADHD was used to differentiate groups who either had credible or non-credible performance on cognitive measures. Consistent with Robinson and Rogers’ study, “true” answers (i.e., erroneous stereotypes) were coded as 1 and “false” answers were coded as 2, creating a 10- to 20-point scale. Lower scores were associated with a higher likelihood of a feigned ADHD presentation.
Results:Preliminary analyses revealed no significant group differences in age, education, race, or gender (ps > .05). An ANOVA indicated a significant difference between groups (F[1, 171] = 10.44, p = .001; Cohen’s d = .68) for Ds-ADHD raw scores; Veterans in the non-credible group reported more “erroneous stereotypes” of ADHD (M raw score = 13.33, SD = 2.20) than those in the credible group (M = 14.82, SD = 2.20). A ROC analysis indicated AUC of .691 (95% CI = .58 to .80). In addition, a cut score of <12 resulted in specificity of 91.8% and sensitivity of 18.5%, whereas a cut score of <13 resulted in specificity of 83.6% and sensitivity of 44.4%.
Conclusions:The Ds-ADHD scale demonstrated significant differences between credible and non-credible respondents in a real-world setting. Previously, this scale has primarily been studied within laboratory settings. Further, results indicate a cut score of <12 could be used in order to achieve adequate specificity (i.e., >90%), which were similar findings to a study examining SVT-based groups (Winiarski et al., 2023). These results differ slightly from prior research by Robinson and Rogers (2018), who indicated a cut score of <13 based on the initial simulation-based study. In similar clinical settings, where there are high rates of psychiatric comorbidity, a cut score of <12 may prove clinically useful. However, this cut-score was associated with low sensitivity within this mixed Veteran sample. Further research should focus on replicating findings within other clinical settings, including ones with larger non-credible samples.

Objective:
Accurate identification of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is complicated by possible secondary gain, overlap of symptoms with psychiatric disorders, and face validity of measures (Suhr et al., 2011; Shura et al., 2017). To assist with diagnostic clarification, an experimental Dissimulation ADHD scale (Ds-ADHD; Robinson & Rogers, 2018) on the MMPI-2 was found to distinguish credible from non-credible respondents defined by Performance Validity Test (PVT)-based group assignment in Veterans (Burley et al., 2023). However, symptom and performance validity have been understood as unique constructs (Van Dyke et al., 2013), with Symptom Validity Tests (SVTs) more accurately identifying over-reporting of symptoms in ADHD (White et al., 2022). The current study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the Ds-ADHD scale using an SVT, namely the Infrequency Index of CAARS (CII; Suhr et al., 2011), for group assignment within a mixed sample of Veterans.
Participants and Methods:In this retrospective study, 187 Veterans (Mage = 36.76, SDage = 11.25, Medu = 14.02, SDedu = 2.10, 83% male, 19% black, 78% white) were referred for neuropsychological evaluation of ADHD and administered a battery that included internally consistent MMPI-2 and CAARS profiles. Veterans were assigned to a credible group (n=134) if CII was <21 or a non-credible group (n=53) if CII was >21. The Ds-ADHD scale was calculated for the MMPI-2. Consistent with Robinson and Rogers (2018), “true” answers (i.e., erroneous stereotypes) were coded as 1 and “false” answers were coded as 2, creating a 10- to 20-point scale. Lower scores were associated with a higher likelihood of a feigned ADHD presentation.
Results:Analyses revealed no significant differences in age, education, race, or gender (ps > .05) between credible and non-credible groups. An ANOVA indicated a significant difference between groups (F[1,185] = 24.78, p <.001; Cohen’s d = 0.80) for Ds-ADHD raw scores. Veterans in the non-credible group reported more “erroneous stereotypes” of ADHD (M raw score = 13.23, SD = 2.10) than those in the credible group (M = 14.94, SD = 2.13). A ROC analysis indicated AUC of .72 (95% CI = .64 to .80). In addition, a Ds-ADHD cut score of <12 resulted in specificity of 94.5% and sensitivity of 22.6%, whereas a cut score of <13 resulted in specificity of 85.8% and sensitivity of 50.9%. When analyzing other CII cut scores recommended in the literature, results were essentially similar. Specifically, analyses were repeated when group assignment was defined by cut score of CII<18 and by removing an intermediate group (CII = 18 to 21; n=24).
Conclusions:The Ds-ADHD scale demonstrated significant differences between credible and non-credible respondents in a Veteran population. Results suggest a cut score of <12 had adequate specificity (.95) with low sensitivity (.23). This is consistent with findings using PVTs for group assignment that indicated a cut score of <12 had adequate specificity (.92) with low sensitivity (.19; Burley et al., 2023). Taken together, findings suggest that the Ds-ADHD scale demonstrates utility in the dissociation of credible from non-credible responding. Further research should evaluate the utility of the scale in other clinical populations.

Objective:
The MMPI-2-RF contains scales that assess different types of invalid response styles, especially potential symptom over-reporting (e.g., F-r, Fs, Fp-r, FBS-r, RBS). However, these scales are not designed to specifically capture noncredible symptoms reports associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Robinson & Rogers (2018) proposed the experimental Dissimulation ADHD validity scale (Ds-ADHD) on the MMPI-2-RF that was effective in distinguishing credible and non-credible ADHD diagnoses via a simulator-based study. Within the current study, the Ds-ADHD scale was compared to the established MMPI-2-RF validity scales within a mixed sample of U.S. Military Veterans.
Participants and Methods:173 Veterans (Mage = 36.18, SDage = 11.10, Medu = 14.01, SDedu = 2.11, 88% male, 81% White, 17% Black) completed a neuropsychological evaluation which included an internally consistent MMPI-2-RF profile and up to 10 performance validity tests (PVTs) as well as a question about a possible ADHD diagnosis. The credible group was determined if participants passed all PVTs (n=146) and completed at least 2 PVTs. The non-credible group was determined by failing two or more PVTs (n=27). Group assignment was clinically confirmed. The Ds-ADHD scale was calculated according to Robinson & Rogers’ (2018); responses of “true” (i.e., erroneous stereotypes) were coded as 1 and “false” answers were coded 2, creating a 10- to 20-point scale. Thus, lower scores would be associated with a higher likelihood of a feigned ADHD presentation. Other MMPI-2-RF validity scales of interest included F-r, Fs, Fp-r, FBS-r, and RBS.
Results:The established MMPI-2-RF validity scales were significantly correlated with PVT group membership, but correlations were weak to moderately strong (rS ranged from -.43 to -.18; ps < .05). A series of stepwise regression models were completed with the Ds-ADHD scale and one of the MMPI-2-RF validity scales as independent variables, with group membership as the dependent variable. Ds-ADHD) contributed uniquely to each model (CÜ ranged from .03 to .04, ps < .05). The established MMPI-2-RF validity scales effectively classified group membership (AUC values ranged from .57 to .68), and the Ds-ADHD scale had a marginally higher AUC (.69); however, it was not statistically significantly stronger than any of the established scales (ps > .05).
Conclusions:Clinicians interested in identifying potentially simulated ADHD presentations with the MMPI-2-RF may desire to calculate the Ds-ADHD scale, which previously only had support from a simulator-based study. The Ds-ADHD scale significantly contributed to each model, suggesting that it helped explain groups over and above each of the traditional MMPI-2-RF validity scales. However, it only had a marginally stronger ability to classify participants, indicating that there may be diminishing returns for clinicians. Among the traditional validity scales, RBS and F-r best classified groups, and FBS-r was the least effective. This study employed a cross-sectional design in a mixed sample of Veterans undergoing a neuropsychological evaluation. Future research should focus on replicating the findings using a credible sample that was limited to an independently verified diagnosis of ADHD.
Localized plasmonic fields of nanoantennas enhance second harmonic generation from two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide

Frequency-dependence and magnitude of second harmonic generation (SHG) from ~4 × 105 nm2 molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayers was examined in presence of single 150 nm plasmonic gold@silica shell@core nanoantenna monomer and dimers. Quantitative agreement between discrete dipole approximation-calculated fields and measured SHG enhancements was found. SHG from MoS2 was enhanced up to 1.88 × upon deposition of a plasmonic nanoantenna-dimer with 170 nm gap, reaching maximal normalized SHG conversion efficiency of 0.0250%/W. Pump losses attributable to plasmonic damping, e.g., scattering and/or hot-electron injection into MoS2, were apparent. Linear and nonlinear optical activity of MoS2 and nanoantenna controls were compared with literature values.
Monolayer-enriched production of Au-decorated WS2 Nanosheets via Defect Engineering

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) represent a diverse, emerging source of two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures with broad application in optoelectronics and energy. Chemical functionalization has evolved into a powerful tool to tailor properties of these 2D TMDs; however, functionalization strategies have been largely limited to the metallic 1T-polytype. The work herein illustrates that 2H-semiconducting liquid-exfoliated tungsten disulfide (WS2) undergoes a spontaneous redox reaction with gold (III) chloride (AuCl3). Au nanoparticles (NPs) predominantly nucleate at nanosheet edges with tuneable NP size and density. AuCl3 is preferentially reduced on multi-layer WS2 and resulting large Au aggregates are easily separated from the colloidal dispersion by simple centrifugation. This process may be exploited to enrich the dispersions in laterally large, monolayer nanosheets. It is proposed that thiol groups at edges and defects sides reduce the AuCl3 to Au0 and are in turn oxidized to disulfides. Optical emission, i.e. photoluminescence, of the monolayers remained pristine, while the electrocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction is significantly improved. Taken together, these improvements in functionalization, fabrication, and catalytic activity represent an important advance in the study of these emerging 2D nanostructures.
Attitudes towards seclusion and restraint in mental health settings: findings from a large, community-based survey of consumers, carers and mental health professionals

Aims.
There are growing calls to reduce, and where possible eliminate, the use of seclusion and restraint in mental health settings, but the attitudes and beliefs of consumers, carers and mental health professionals towards these practices are not well understood. The aim of this study was to compare the attitudes of mental health service consumers, carers and mental health professionals towards seclusion and restraint in mental health settings. In particular, it aimed to explore beliefs regarding whether elimination of seclusion and restraint was desirable and possible.
Methods.In 2014, an online survey was developed and widely advertised in Australia via the National Mental Health Commission and through mental health networks. The survey adopted a mixed-methods design, including both quantitative and qualitative questions concerning participants’ demographic details, the use of seclusion and restraint in practice and their views on strategies for reducing and eliminating these practices.
Results.In total 1150 survey responses were analysed. A large majority of participants believed that seclusion and restraint practices were likely to cause harm, breach human rights, compromise trust and potentially cause or trigger past trauma. Consumers were more likely than professionals to view these practices as harmful. The vast majority of participants believed that it was both desirable and feasible to eliminate mechanical restraint. Many participants, particularly professionals, believed that seclusion and some forms of restraint were likely to produce some benefits, including increasing consumer safety, increasing the safety of staff and others and setting behavioural boundaries.
Conclusions.There was strong agreement across participant groups that the use of seclusion and restraint is harmful, breaches human rights and compromises the therapeutic relationship and trust between mental health service providers and those who experience these restrictive practices. However, some benefits were also identified, particularly by professionals. Participants had mixed views regarding the feasibility and desirability of eliminating these practices.
Plasmon optics and thermal dissipation in nanocomposite thin films

Optical properties and thermal relaxation dynamics of resonantly excited plasmons are important in applications for optoelectronics, biomedicine, energy, and catalysis. Geometric optics of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin films containing uniformly or asymmetrically distributed polydisperse reduced AuNPs or uniformly distributed monodisperse solution-synthesized AuNPs were recently evaluated using a compact linear algebraic sum. Algebraic calculation of geometric transmission, reflection, and attenuation for AuNP-PDMS films provides a simple, workable alternative to effective medium approximations, computationally expensive methods, and fitting of experimental data. This approach allows for the summative optical responses of a sequence of 2D elements comprising a 3D assembly to be analyzed. Thin PDMS films containing 3-7 micron layers of reduced AuNPs were fabricated with a novel diffusive-reduction synthesis technique. Rapid diffusive reduction of AuNPs into asymmetric PDMS thin films provided superior photothermal response relative to thicker films with AuNPs reduced throughout, with a photon-to-heat conversion of up to 3000°C/watt which represents 3-230-fold increase over previous AuNP-functionalized systems. Later work showed that introduction of AuNPs into PDMS enhanced thermoplasmonic dissipation coincident with internal reflection of incident resonant irradiation. Measured thermal emission and dynamics of AuNP-PDMS thin films exceeded emission and dynamics attributable by finite element analysis to Mie absorption, Fourier heat conduction, Rayleigh convection, and Stefan-Boltzmann radiation. Refractive-index matching experiments and measured temperature profiles indicated AuNP-containing thin films internally reflected light and dissipated power transverse to the film surface. Enhanced thermoplasmonic dissipation from metal-polymer nanocomposite thin films could affect opto- and bio-electronic implementation of these systems.

The UK’s Farm Animal Genetic Resources (FAnGR) – its farm animal breeds, strains and varieties, and the variability within them-are of great economic, social and cultural importance. For these reasons alone it is important that we care for them, but we also have national and international obligations to do so.

Temperature and respiratory gas (CO2 and O2) concentrations were measured in the foraging tunnels of burrows naturally inhabited by two species of southern African mole-rats, the Cape mole-rat Georhychus capensis and the Damaraland mole-rat Cryptomys damarensis. Both species are completely fossorial and inhabit closed burrow systems. Tunnels of G. capensis burrows had a mean diameter of 8.7 cm and a depth, measured to the roof of the tunnel, of 6.2 cm; those of C. damarensis had a mean diameter of 6.5 cm and depth of 40 cm. In both species, the mean concentration of CO2 was higher, and mean concentration of O2 lower, in burrows than in the surrounding soil or in ambient air. Mean and minimum values of O2 were 20.4% and 19.8%, respectively, in G. capensis and 20.4% and 19.9% in C. damarensis; mean and maximum values of CO2 were 0.4% and 1.2% in G. capensis and 0.4% and 6.0% in C. damarensis. Temperature varied between 18.5 and 24.2 °C in burrows of G. capensis by comparison with an ambient range of 16.9 to 26.8 °C; and from 19.6 to 29.3 °C in burrows of C. damarensis by comparison with an ambient range of 8.6 to 30.8 °C. Thus a burrowing habit seems to offer both species protection from extremes of temperature without entailing the cost of a grossly abnormal respiratory environment. From a review of the relevant literature, we conclude that average concentrations of CO2 and O2 in mammalian burrows often do not differ greatly from ambient values. However, more work is needed to determine the respiratory gas concentrations in the immediate vicinity of active, burrowing animals.
Overlapping antigenic repertoires of variant antigens expressed on the surface of erythrocytes infected by Plasmodium falciparum

Antibodies against variable antigens expressed on the surface of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes are believed to be important for protection against malaria. A target for these antibodies is the P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1, PfEMP1, which is encoded by around 50 var genes and undergoes clonal variation. Using agglutination and mixed agglutination tests and flow cytometry to analyse the recognition of variant antigens on parasitized erythrocytes by plasma antibodies from individuals living in Daraweesh in eastern Sudan, an area of seasonal and unstable malaria transmission, we show that these antibodies recognize different variant antigens expressed by parasites of different genotype. Comparing the levels and acquisition of antibody to variant antigens in pairs of parasite isolates expressing different variant types, there is a correlation between the acquisition of antibodies to some combinations of variant antigens but not to others. These results indicate that (1) a single infection will induce the production of antibodies recognizing several variants of surface-expressed antigens, (2) the repertoire of variable antigens expressed by different parasites is overlapping and the degree of overlap differs between isolates, and (3) the expression of at least some variant antigens is genetically linked.
The Schiff base complex of yeast 5-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase with laevulinic acid

The X-ray structure of the complex formed between yeast 5-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) and the inhibitor laevulinic acid has been determined at 2.15 Å resolution. The inhibitor binds by forming a Schiff base link with one of the two invariant lysines at the catalytic center: Lys263. It is known that this lysine forms a Schiff base link with substrate bound at the enzyme's so-called P-site. The carboxyl group of laevulinic acid makes hydrogen bonds with the side-chain–OH groups of Tyr329 and Ser290, as well as with the main-chain >NH group of Ser290. The aliphatic moiety of the inhibitor makes hydrophobic interactions with surrounding aromatic residues in the protein including Phe219, which resides in the flap covering the active site. Our analysis strongly suggests that the same interactions will be made by P-side substrate and also indicates that the substrate that binds at the enzyme's A-site will interact with the enzyme's zinc ion bound by three cysteines (133, 135, and 143). Inhibitor binding caused a substantial ordering of the active site flap (residues 217–235), which was largely invisible in the native electron density map and indicates that this highly conserved yet flexible region has a specific role in substrate binding during catalysis.
Seasonal changes in the Plasmodium falciparum population in individuals and their relationship to clinical malaria: a longitudinal study in a Sudanese village

Residents of Daraweesh village in Sudan were monitored for Plasmodium falciparum infection and malaria morbidity in 3 malaria seasons from 1993 to 1996. Malaria parasites were detected microscopically and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in a series of cross-sectional surveys. PCR revealed submicroscopical infections during the dry season, particularly among individuals who had recovered from a malaria episode following successful drug treatment. Clinical and subclinical infections were contrasted by assaying for allelic polymorphism at 2 gene loci, MSP-1 and GLURP and 2 hypotheses examined with reference to these data: that clinical malaria is associated with infection with novel parasite genotypes not previously detected in that host, or alternatively, that clinical malaria episodes are associated with an increased number of clones in an infection. We detected more mixed infections among clinical isolates, but people carrying parasites during the dry season were not found to have an increased risk of disease in the following malaria season. There was a clear association of disease with the appearance of novel parasite genotypes.

The Early Iron Age enclosures and associated sites on Sutton Common on the western edge of the Humberhead Levels contain an exceptional variety of archaeological data of importance not only to the region but for the study of later prehistory in the British Isles. Few other later prehistoric British sites outside the East Anglian fens and the Somerset Levels have thus far produced the quantity and quality of organically preserved archaeological materials that have been found, despite the small scale of the investigations to date. The excavations have provided an opportunity to integrate a variety of environmental analyses, of wood, pollen, beetles, waterlogged and carbonised plant remains, and of soil micromorphology, to address archaeological questions about the character, use, and environment of this Early Iron Age marsh fort. The site is comprised of a timber palisaded enclosure and a succeeding multivallate enclosure linked to a smaller enclosure by a timber alignment across a palaeochannel, with associated finds ranging in date from the Middle Bronze Age to the Roman and medieval periods. Among the four adjacent archaeological sites is an Early Mesolithic occupation site, also with organic preservation, and there is a Late Neolithic site beneath the large enclosure. Desiccation throughout the common is leading to the damage and loss of wooden and organic remains. It is hoped that the publication of these results, of investigations between 1987 and 1993, will lead to a fuller investigation taking place.
