The past decade witnessed a wide range of industrial relations reforms in Australia. Employee participation and industrial democracy was espoused by the Labor government (1983–96) as a key element in its workplace reform program. It was also embraced by the trade union movement and, to a lesser extent, by leading employers and their associations. A case study of employee participation in the Ford Motor Company is used to illustrate the process of workplace reform in Australia during this period While Ford Australia provides a positive example of workplace change, it is argued that the promise of employee participation has not generally been fulfilled in Australian industry. Contributing factors identified in the paper include economic recession, the decline of trade union membership and a lack of ‘people’ skills in managerial ranks.

Palaeoecology has been prominent in studies of environmental change during the Holocene epoch in Scotland. These studies have been dominated by palynology (pollen, spore and related bio-and litho-stratigraphic analyses) as a key approach to multi- and inter-disciplinary investigations of topics such as vegetation, climate and landscape change. This paper highlights some key dimensions of the pollen- and vegetation-based archive, with a focus upon woodland dynamics, blanket peat, human impacts, biodiversity and conservation. Following a brief discussion of chronological, climatic, faunal and landscape contexts, the migration, survival and nature of the woodland cover through time is assessed, emphasising its time-transgressiveness and altitudinal variation. While agriculture led to the demise of woodland in lowland areas of the south and east, the spread of blanket peat was especially a phenomenon of the north and west, including the Western and Northern Isles. Almost a quarter of Scotland is covered by blanket peat and the cause(s) of its spread continue(s) to evoke recourse to climatic, topographic, pedogenic, hydrological, biotic or anthropogenic influences, while we remain insufficiently knowledgeable about the timing of the formation processes. Humans have been implicated in vegetational change throughout the Holocene, with prehistoric woodland removal, woodland management, agricultural impacts arising from arable and pastoral activities, potential heathland development and afforestation. The viability of many current vegetation communities remains a concern, in that Scottish data show reductions in plant diversity over the last 400 years, which recent conservation efforts have yet to reverse. Palaeoecological evidence can be used to test whether conservation baselines and restoration targets are appropriate to longer-term ecosystem variability and can help identify when modern conditions have no past analogues.

The Taipan galaxy survey (hereafter simply ‘Taipan’) is a multi-object spectroscopic survey starting in 2017 that will cover 2π steradians over the southern sky (δ ≲ 10°, |b| ≳ 10°), and obtain optical spectra for about two million galaxies out to z < 0.4. Taipan will use the newly refurbished 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory with the new TAIPAN instrument, which includes an innovative ‘Starbugs’ positioning system capable of rapidly and simultaneously deploying up to 150 spectroscopic fibres (and up to 300 with a proposed upgrade) over the 6° diameter focal plane, and a purpose-built spectrograph operating in the range from 370 to 870 nm with resolving power R ≳ 2000. The main scientific goals of Taipan are (i) to measure the distance scale of the Universe (primarily governed by the local expansion rate, H0) to 1% precision, and the growth rate of structure to 5%; (ii) to make the most extensive map yet constructed of the total mass distribution and motions in the local Universe, using peculiar velocities based on improved Fundamental Plane distances, which will enable sensitive tests of gravitational physics; and (iii) to deliver a legacy sample of low-redshift galaxies as a unique laboratory for studying galaxy evolution as a function of dark matter halo and stellar mass and environment. The final survey, which will be completed within 5 yrs, will consist of a complete magnitude-limited sample (i ⩽ 17) of about 1.2 × 106 galaxies supplemented by an extension to higher redshifts and fainter magnitudes (i ⩽ 18.1) of a luminous red galaxy sample of about 0.8 × 106 galaxies. Observations and data processing will be carried out remotely and in a fully automated way, using a purpose-built automated ‘virtual observer’ software and an automated data reduction pipeline. The Taipan survey is deliberately designed to maximise its legacy value by complementing and enhancing current and planned surveys of the southern sky at wavelengths from the optical to the radio; it will become the primary redshift and optical spectroscopic reference catalogue for the local extragalactic Universe in the southern sky for the coming decade.

Yellow mignonette (Reseda lutea (L.) # RESLU) is a broadleaf perennial weed that is native to the Mediterranean Basin and Asia Minor. It has been spread around the world and is widely recognized in Australia as a troublesome noxious weed in croplands. It is a problem in cropland and pastures because of its high seed output, extensive reproductive root system, ability to thrive under disturbed conditions, and high nitrate levels. While nitrate levels of 2.5 to 3.1% have been detected in plants during the rosette to early flower growth stages, when yellow mignonette is most palatable, no livestock injury or deaths have been reported. Yellow mignonette was first reported in Montana in 1958 but was not recognized as a weed problem until 1990. Since 1988 it has invaded several hundred hectares of small grains and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)-grass pastures in Central Montana and is spreading rapidly along gravel road shoulders.

In 1977, a large group of musicians performed David Dunn’s Sky Drift while moving slowly across a Southern California desert, documenting the concert with four stationary microphones. A year later, Dunn presented the work in New York as a ‘performance/documentation’, playing back the audio recording for a seated audience. This article explores issues of ‘liveness’ in recorded sound, ‘transparency’, ‘aura’ and ‘the work itself’ in order to examine the consequences of this act: what does it mean for a recording of an outdoor performance to be shared at an indoor concert event? Can such a complex and interactive experience – with widely dispersed musicians and mobile audience members – be successfully converted into a fixed document? What does a recording capture and what must it exclude? Because Sky Drift constantly shifts the physical relationships between musicians and audience across a vast outdoor landscape, each listener’s experience represents an equally valid sonic perspective on the piece. As a result, it is unclear how a satisfying recording might be made or what it might even mean to ‘hear the music’ at all. When relocated – away from its original outdoor context – Sky Drift is deprived of much of its potential to communicate meaning.

This paper describes the system architecture of a newly constructed radio telescope – the Boolardy engineering test array, which is a prototype of the Australian square kilometre array pathfinder telescope. Phased array feed technology is used to form multiple simultaneous beams per antenna, providing astronomers with unprecedented survey speed. The test array described here is a six-antenna interferometer, fitted with prototype signal processing hardware capable of forming at least nine dual-polarisation beams simultaneously, allowing several square degrees to be imaged in a single pointed observation. The main purpose of the test array is to develop beamforming and wide-field calibration methods for use with the full telescope, but it will also be capable of limited early science demonstrations.

Reducing the environmental footprint, allied with enhancing food quality and safety are key elements of the new agenda to improve the sustainability of livestock farming. Improving nutrient use efficiency is a key challenge in ruminant production systems with improvements in dietary forage utilisation, enabling reductions in use of cereal and/or protein rich supplements, being one of the primary means to achieve this goal (Kingston-Smith & Thomas, 2003). Consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of the relationships between diet and health, in particular food quality and safety. Research into functional food components has focused on increasing the quantities of those nutrients present naturally in ruminant products which are considered to play important roles in health promotion and disease prevention. Food safety on the other hand has focused on the ability to eliminate or decrease food-chain pathogens that can be harboured in the gut of ruminants in order to improve both human and animal health. Microbial transformations in the digestive tract (in particular the rumen) have a major impact on our ability to improve nutrient use efficiency, food quality and safety. The rumen microflora is very diverse making it a challenging ecosystem to manipulate. Application of cultivation independent methodologies has also revealed that only as little as 11% of the bacterial diversity has been cultivated to date (Edwards et al. , 2004). This paper reviews how increasing our understanding of microbially mediated processes in the rumen is central to achieving improvements in nutrient use efficiency, food quality and safety.

Thin films of AlxGa1−xN (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.96) having smooth surfaces were deposited directly on both vicinal and on-axis 6H-SiC(0001) substrates. Cross-sectional TEM of Al0.13Ga0.87N revealed stacking faults near the SiC/Nitride alloy interface and numerous threading dislocations. EDX, AES and RBS were used to determine the compositions, which were paired with their respective CL near band-edge emission energies. A negative bowing parameter was determined. The CL emission energies were similar to the bandgap energies obtained by SE. FE-AES of the initial growth of Al0.2Ga0.8N revealed an aluminum rich layer near the interface. N-type (silicon) doping was achieved for AlxGa1−xN for 0.12 ≤ x ≤ 0.42. Al0.2Ga0.8N/GaN superlattices were fabricated with coherent interfaces. Additionally, HEMT structures using an AlN/GaN/AlN buffer structure were fabricated.

We provide the widest estimate thus far of the range of tensile and compressive stress (−3.8 to 3.5 kbar) that GaN epitaxial material can withstand before relaxation occurs, and an unambiguous determination of the spin-orbit splitting Δso = 17.0 ± 1 meV for the material. These are achieved by analyzing 10K reflectance data for the energy separation of transitions between the uppermost valence bands and the lowest conduction band of wurtzitic GaN as a function of biaxial stress for a series of GaN films grown on both Al2O3 and 6H-SiC substrates. Our data explicitly show the nonlinear behavior of the excitonic energy splittings B-A and C-A vs. the energy position of the A exciton, which stands in contrast to the linear approximations used by previous workers analyzing material grown only on Al2O3 substrates. Further, the lineshape ambiguities present in GaN reflectance spectra that hindered the accurate determination of such excitonic energies have also been resolved by analyzing these data in reciprocal space, where critical point energies are determined by phase effects to an accuracy of ±0.5 meV.
