The Late Ordovician (late Katian) Tcherskidium fauna consisted of large- and thick-shelled virgianid pentamerid brachiopods characterized by large and ribbed shells of Tcherskidium and Proconchidium and usually associated with Holorhynchus, Deloprosopus, and Eoconchidium. This unique fauna was widely distributed across several tectonic plates, largely confined to the paleoequatorial and especially the northern paleotropical zones, such as northern Laurentia, accretionary terranes of Alaska, Kolyma, Baltica, Siberia, Kazakh and adjacent terranes, and South China. In Laurentia, the eponymous genus Tcherskidium was predominant in regions north of the paleoequator and, in sharp contrast, was absent south of the paleoequator. In this study, Tcherskidium lonei n. sp. and Proconchidium schleyi n. sp. are described from Alaska and North Greenland, respectively, adding new data on the Tcherskidium fauna of the Late Ordovician Northern Hemisphere. Shell gigantism, together with the sharp paleobiogeographic division, suggests that the Late Ordovician (late Katian) Northern Hemisphere had a prevailing warm-water mass, probably due to the lack of large landmass beyond the northern tropics. This was in sharp contrast to the Southern Hemisphere, which was frequently influenced by cold-water invasions from the ice-bearing Gondwana supercontinent centered on the South Pole.

Agitation is a common complication of Alzheimer’s dementia (Agit-AD) associated with substantial morbidity, high healthcare service utilization, and adverse emotional and physical impact on care partners. There are currently no FDA-approved pharmacological treatments for Agit-AD. We present the study design and baseline data for an ongoing multisite, three-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial of dronabinol (synthetic tetrahydrocannabinol [THC]), titrated to a dose of 10 mg daily, in 80 participants to examine the safety and efficacy of dronabinol as an adjunctive treatment for Agit-AD. Preliminary findings for 44 participants enrolled thus far show a predominately female, white sample with advanced cognitive impairment (Mini Mental Status Examination mean 7.8) and agitation (Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Clinician Agitation subscale mean 14.1). Adjustments to study design in light of the COVID-19 pandemic are described. Findings from this study will provide guidance for the clinical utility of dronabinol for Agit-AD. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02792257.

Background
In the UK, acute mental healthcare is provided by in-patient wards and crisis resolution teams. Readmission to acute care following discharge is common. Acute day units (ADUs) are also provided in some areas.
AimsTo assess predictors of readmission to acute mental healthcare following discharge in England, including availability of ADUs.
MethodWe enrolled a national cohort of adults discharged from acute mental healthcare in the English National Health Service (NHS) between 2013 and 2015, determined the risk of readmission to either in-patient or crisis teams, and used multivariable, multilevel logistic models to evaluate predictors of readmission.
ResultsOf a total of 231 998 eligible individuals discharged from acute mental healthcare, 49 547 (21.4%) were readmitted within 6 months, with a median time to readmission of 34 days (interquartile range 10–88 days). Most variation in readmission (98%) was attributable to individual patient-level rather than provider (trust)-level effects (2.0%). Risk of readmission was not associated with local availability of ADUs (adjusted odds ratio 0.96, 95% CI 0.80–1.15). Statistically significant elevated risks were identified for participants who were female, older, single, from Black or mixed ethnic groups, or from more deprived areas. Clinical predictors included shorter index admission, psychosis and being an in-patient at baseline.
ConclusionsRelapse and readmission to acute mental healthcare are common following discharge and occur early. Readmission was not influenced significantly by trust-level variables including availability of ADUs. More support for relapse prevention and symptom management may be required following discharge from acute mental healthcare.

A small assemblage of shelly fossils, dominated by the brachiopod Treptotreta jucunda and the bradoriid arthropod Mongolitubulus aspermachaera new species is described from a Furongian limestone of Västergötland, south-central Sweden. Mongolitubulus aspermachaera is represented in the assemblage by individual valves and numerous, ornamented spines. Valves and spines share identical ornament and microstructure leaving no doubt that the isolated spines were once attached to the bradoriid valves. Mongolitubulus aspermachaera adds to the increasing list of spinose Cambrian bradoriid arthropods, and Mongolitubulidae new family is erected here to incorporate the genera Mongolitubulus, Tubuterium and Spinospitella. Mongolitubulus aspermachaera represents the youngest member of the new family and supplements the biodiversity of bradoriids in the Furongian, an interval when bradoriid diversity is considered to be very much on the decline. The brachiopod Treptotreta jucunda described predominantly from the ‘middle' to ‘late' Cambrian of Australia is here documented for the first time from outside Gondwana, dramatically extending the biogeographical range of the species. Other elements of the faunal assemblage include typical Baltic Furongian representatives, such as the trilobite Parabolina, the agnostoid Agnostus and the phosphatocopids Hesslandona and Vestrogothia.

CH3Cl emissions by freshly harvested tubers of 61 potato cultivars ranged from less than 4 to 650 ng g−1 f. wt d−1. In experiments with Anna, the cultivar displaying the highest release rate, maximum emission of CH3Cl occurred at 20°C but the rate diminished after 48 h, a decrease due in part to inhibition of CH3Cl release by the accumulation of CH3Cl in the headspace. In 1995 and 1996, CH3Cl emission by tubers was first detectable 6 wk before the normal harvest date. If tubers were stored at 20°C immediately following harvest, release attained a maximum of 350 ng g−1 f. wt d−1 about 4 d after harvest, falling to less than 4 ng g−1 f. wt d−1 within 3 wk of harvest. On storage at 6°C post-harvest, maximum release of CH3Cl (c. 600 ng g−1) was delayed until 5 wk after harvest and release fell below 4 ng g−1 f. wt d−1 after 200 d. Release of CH3Cl was not significantly affected by cutting or bruising tuber tissue, and CH3Cl biosynthesis occurred in both core and superficial tissues of the tuber. The S-methyl group of either L- or D-methionine acted as a precursor of CH3Cl in sliced tubers, but the methylating system was specific for Cl−. An isotope dilution technique using C2H3Cl demonstrated that the amount of CH3Cl metabolized by the intact tuber was approximately 36% of the net release. However, investigations with 14CH3Cl showed that only a small proportion (7%) of the CH3Cl metabolized was fixed in involatile form in the tuber. In both skin and core tissues, fixed 14C was located primarily (80%) in the fraction soluble in phosphate buffer, but the specific activity of skin tissue was about twice that of core tissue. Autoradiography demonstrated that 14C fixation in the tuber was greatest within the lenticels, possibly indicating a microflora adapted to use the locally high concentrations of CH3Cl. Significant 14C fixation was also associated with the periderm but was not attributable to labelling of the O-methyl groups of the phenolic components of suberin. Within the core of the tuber, 14C fixation was located primarily in the phloem, pith and medullary rays.

The production of chloromethane (CH3Cl) by wood rotting fungi of the Hymenochaetaceae is discussed with particular emphasis on emissions by species of Phellinus and Inonotus. Recent work on the metabolic role of CH3Cl as a methyl donor in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites both in the Hymenochaetaceae and other families of white-rot fungi is reviewed. The parameters affecting the fungal emissions of CH3Cl in forest ecosystems are considered and where possible quantified. The annual global input to the atmosphere from this source is provisionally estimated at 160000 t of which 75% is released from tropical and subtropical forests and 86% is attributable to Phellinus. The possible impact of the contribution from fungi and other biological sources on the atmospheric CH3Cl burden and stratospheric ozone depletion is assessed.
