OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Community-based participatory research is a “gold standard” methodology, yet many researchers lack the experience or resources to implement this approach. To make engagement more accessible, we developed and implemented a 3-part training series highlighting engagement as a spectrum with many options to meaningfully engage partners. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Staff at UNC-Chapel Hill’s CTSA and Cancer Center collaborated with patient and community partners to co-develop training content, structure, and delivery. Sessions were free and open to the public and covered key components of research engagement and its benefits, debunked common myths and misconceptions about engagement, outlined specific methods along the spectrum of engagement (from low to high touch), and described nuances of building and maintaining partnerships. Partners determined how to best incorporate their perspectives, developed content (including videos, audio clips, and quotes), and co-presented with UNC staff. Evaluations were collected after each session and feedback was incorporated into future iterations. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: 194 individuals from over 20 institutions have participated in the training. Of all survey respondents to date (n=74), 93% were very or extremely satisfied, 77% felt the training was very or extremely relevant to their work, and 76% were very or extremely likely to use information learned in the next year. Most helpful parts of the training were differentiating research engagement from participation; explaining engagement as a spectrum with varied methodologies; providing tools and resources to implement different approaches; and hearing directly from community co-presenters about their experiences engaging in research. Based on feedback, we created a workshop for researchers to develop engagement plans and an additional training for partners to build capacity and knowledge about engaging in research. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Engaging partners who are impacted by research can be instrumental to the success of a study. This training can help researchers identify engagement approaches that align with their goals, experience, and resources, as well as the interests and capacity of potential partners, and can serve as a model for those interested in training co-development.

In the Basilicata region, located in southern Italy and known for hosting among the first occurrences of the Acheulean culture in southwestern Europe, the Lower Paleolithic site of Loreto at Venosa is located less than a kilometer from the emblematic site of Notarchirico and less than 25 km from Cimitero di Atella. The Loreto site has not been studied as thoroughly as the two other sites and, although geological investigations have been carried out in the Venosa basin, no direct numerical dating has ever been published for the three archaeological levels brought to light during the excavation campaigns. We present a multi-method geochronological approach combining ESR/U-series, ESR, and 40Ar/39Ar permitting to refine the age of the most ancient archaeological level (A) of the Loreto site. These data allow us to propose an MIS 13 age for this level, in accordance with previous hypotheses based on geological and paleontological data. We also propose a technical review of the lithic tools preserved in the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Venosa to integrate Loreto in the evolution scheme of the European Acheulean techno-complex emergence and diffusion.

Objective:
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), underscoring the urgent need for simple, efficient, and inexpensive methods to decontaminate masks and respirators exposed to severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We hypothesized that methylene blue (MB) photochemical treatment, which has various clinical applications, could decontaminate PPE contaminated with coronavirus.
Design:The 2 arms of the study included (1) PPE inoculation with coronaviruses followed by MB with light (MBL) decontamination treatment and (2) PPE treatment with MBL for 5 cycles of decontamination to determine maintenance of PPE performance.
Methods:MBL treatment was used to inactivate coronaviruses on 3 N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) and 2 medical mask models. We inoculated FFR and medical mask materials with 3 coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, and we treated them with 10 µM MB and exposed them to 50,000 lux of white light or 12,500 lux of red light for 30 minutes. In parallel, integrity was assessed after 5 cycles of decontamination using multiple US and international test methods, and the process was compared with the FDA-authorized vaporized hydrogen peroxide plus ozone (VHP+O3) decontamination method.
Results:Overall, MBL robustly and consistently inactivated all 3 coronaviruses with 99.8% to >99.9% virus inactivation across all FFRs and medical masks tested. FFR and medical mask integrity was maintained after 5 cycles of MBL treatment, whereas 1 FFR model failed after 5 cycles of VHP+O3.
Conclusions:MBL treatment decontaminated respirators and masks by inactivating 3 tested coronaviruses without compromising integrity through 5 cycles of decontamination. MBL decontamination is effective, is low cost, and does not require specialized equipment, making it applicable in low- to high-resource settings.

In 2019, BYK Additives (Widnes, UK; www.byk.com) marked the 55th anniversary of the discovery by Dr Barbara Zsusanna (Susanna) Neumann of the extraordinary product known as Laponite®. The range of Laponite® products developed in the UK during the early 1960s is one of the first examples of truly nanodimensional materials manufactured on an industrial scale, at a time when the field of nanotechnology was only being hinted at (Feynman, 1959). These hectorite-like synthetic nanoclays with very unusual properties have been an enduring commercial success for the UK company that first patented and introduced them to the market, Laporte Industries, which is now a part of the BYK company. The Laponite® brand has proved tremendously popular with academic and industrial scientists worldwide, being cited in >3000 patents and >2500 published academic articles.

Recent observations of globular clusters encourage to revise some aspects of the traditional paradigm, in which they were considered to be isotropic in velocity space and non-rotating. However, the theory of collisionless spheroids with some kinematic richness has seldom been studied. We present here a further step in this direction, owing to new results regarding the linear stability of rotating Plummer spheres, with varying anisotropy in velocity space and total amount of angular momentum. We extend the well-known radial orbit instability to rotating systems, and discover a new regime of instability in fast rotating, tangentially anisotropic systems.

To determine the effects of length of gestation and sex on infant body composition, air displacement plethysmography was performed in forty-six full-term neonates at 3 d of life and during the week prior to hospital discharge in 180 preterm neonates. Fat mass, as a percentage of body weight, was higher in preterm than in term infants (13·4 (sd 4·2) v. 10·1 (sd 3·7) %, respectively; P= 0·001). The absolute amount of fat mass did not differ between preterm and full-term newborns (323 (sd 126) v. 335 (sd 138) g; P= 0·58), whereas lean body mass was lower in preterm than in term infants (2055 (sd 280) v. 2937 (sd 259) g, respectively; P< 0·001). Among full-term infants, fat mass was higher in females than in males (11·1 (sd 3·7) v. 9·0 (sd 3·3) %, respectively; P= 0·047), whereas we did not observe any sex difference in preterm infants (13·5 (sd 4·1) v. 13·4 (sd 4·3) %; P= 0·89). Our data suggest that by the time they are discharged from hospital: (1) preterm infants have a higher percentage of body fat than term neonates and (2) this is presumably due to a lesser accretion in lean body mass in the first few weeks of extra-uterine life, particularly in boys.

Here we report the second and third known specimens of Cephalopholis fulva with partial melanic coloration, photographed at Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and Camamu Bay, south-western Atlantic. While the species exhibits a wide range of colorations, the melanic pattern is an aberration only recently reported. Since C. fulva is common within its area of distribution and is of importance to fisheries, increasing records of melanism can either result from higher frequency than previously thought or, alternatively, that this condition is becoming more common.

In this work, hydrophobic mesostructured organosilica thin films, exhibiting isolated mesopores (~ 7 nm), have been successfully deposited by spin-coating using different polystyrene-block-polyethylene oxide copolymers (PS-b-PEO) as structure-directing agents and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) as organosilica precursor. Different ordered mesostructures (Face Centered Cubic, 2D or 3D Hexagonal and Body Centered Cubic) can be achieved by controlling different synthesis parameters. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (GISAXS) techniques were used to investigate the mesostructure evolution through thermal and UV treatments. Swelling and shrinkage were evidenced by in-situ XRD and X-Ray Reflectivity measurements during the thermal removal of the meso-templates. Infrared spectroscopy and 29Si NMR were additionally used to investigate the microstructure evolution. The film porosity was estimated thanks to Ellipsometry Porosimetry (EP). Correlation between mechanical properties through nanoindentation measurements and the mesostructure ordering is discussed as well as assessments of the dielectric constant k by mercury contact probe.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
This chapter will consider the relationship between the development process and the diversification of activities induced by foreign direct investment (or FDI) over the past five decades of industrialization. Our analysis will emphasize the interaction between growth, the international opening up of the economy, and public promotion policies. It will consider the regional context for FDI attractiveness in the ASEAN area, the impact of FDI on industrial development, and sector diversification through empirical data and policy analysis. Three phases will be defined, based on industrialization dynamics and growth patterns: First the founding decades (1959–85), then the period of FDI take-off-cum-export-led growth (1986–96), and finally, the crisis years and the post-crisis period since 1997. The conclusion, considering the situation in the present decade, addresses the issue of the “uncertainty of FDI”: Inflows remain strong amid a challenging regional and domestic environment but China's position in the regional arena both as a large market for inputs produced by neighbours, and as a recipient of FDI more than a significant investor — is ambivalent. Meanwhile competition from neighbouring ASEAN member countries is on the increase, and public policies look both erratic and lacking in consistency. Thailand's competitive advantage is indeed at stake and the reconstruction of this is a major challenge.
GROWTH AND INDUSTRIALIZATION
Thailand's growth pattern over the past decades is well analysed in economic literature, with major contributions from political economists (Hewison, Pongpaichit), mainstream economists (Warr, Krongkaew), and others (Simon, Suehiro). Thailand's case was also considered relevant in the controversial World Bank report on Asian Miracle economies (World Bank 1993). Thailand's industrialization is indeed a very good example of long-term growth-cum-development, a stage-based process sustained through time, with a strong transition of economic structures. Figure 1.1 offers an overview of this industrialization process — with three phases identified through three decades of development: 1970–85 when industry equals, then overtakes, agriculture in GDP; 1986–96, the golden decade in terms of growth and FDI inflows; and 1998–2005 with the aftermath of the Asian crisis.

The typical life cycle of aphids involves several parthenogenetic generations followed by a single sexual one in autumn, i.e. cyclical parthenogenesis. Sexual females are genetically identical to their parthenogenetic mothers and carry two sex chromosomes (XX). Male production involves the elimination of one sex chromosome (to produce X0) that could give rise to genetic conflicts between X-chromosomes. In addition, deleterious recessive mutations could accumulate on sex chromosomes during the parthenogenetic phase and affect males differentially depending on the X-chromosome they inherit. Genetic conflicts and deleterious mutations thus may induce transmission bias that could be exaggerated in males. Here, the transmission of X-chromosomes has been studied in the laboratory in two cyclically parthenogenetic lineages of the bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. X-chromosome transmission was followed, using X-linked microsatellite loci, at male production in the two lineages and in their hybrids deriving from reciprocal crosses. Genetic analyses revealed non-Mendelian inheritance of X-chromosomes in both parental and hybrid lineages at different steps of male function. Putative mechanisms and evolutionary consequences of non-Mendelian transmission of X-chromosomes to males are discussed.

We used polymorphic microsatellite markers to look for recombination during parthenogenetic oogenesis between the X chromosomes of aphids of the tribe Macrosiphini. We examined the X chromosome because it comprises ∼25% of the genome and previous cytological observations of chromosome pairing and nucleolar organizer (NOR) heteromorphism suggest recombination, although the same is not true for autosomes. A total of 564 parthenogenetic females of Myzus clones with three distinct reproductive modes (cyclical parthenogenesis, obligate parthenogenesis and obligate parthenogenesis with male production) were genotyped at three informative X-linked loci. Also, parthenogenetically produced males from clones encompassing the full range of male-producing reproductive strategies were genotyped. These included 391 Myzus persicae males that were genotyped at three X-linked loci and 538 males from Sitobion clones that were genotyped at five informative X-linked loci. Our results show no departure from clonality in parthenogenetic generations of aphids of the tribe Macrosiphini: no recombinant genotypes were observed in parthenogenetically produced males or females.
