According to International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines, all species must be assessed against all criteria during the Red Listing process. For organismal groups that are diverse and understudied, assessors face considerable challenges in assembling evidence due to difficulty in applying definitions of key terms used in the guidelines. Challenges also arise because of uncertainty in population sizes (Criteria A, C, D) and distributions (Criteria A2/3/4c, B). Lichens, which are often small, difficult to identify, or overlooked during biodiversity inventories, are one such group for which specific difficulties arise in applying Red List criteria. Here, we offer approaches and examples that address challenges in completing Red List assessments for lichens in a rapidly changing arena of data availability and analysis strategies. While assessors still contend with far from perfect information about individual species, we propose practical solutions for completing robust assessments given the currently available knowledge of individual lichen life-histories.

We investigated foodways at Real Alto, an early Formative (4400–1800 BC) Valdivia site in coastal Ecuador, using starch and phytoliths recovered from 50 stone tools from three residential and two ceremonial structures, as well as 46 human dental calculus samples, to explore how food reflects the social relationships and economy of the community. Maize was important in daily meals and ceremonial foods by the Middle Valdivia (2800–2400 BC), but it was only one component of an agricultural system that included yuca, arrowroot, llerén, canna, yam, jackbean, squash, gourd, chili, and cotton. Ceremonial and everyday foods at Real Alto did not differ: actions surrounding food were both domestic and ceremonial, depending on context. Households had equal access to annual crops and to root-tubers with longer growing seasons. Gelatinized starch was commonly recovered on tools, indicating the processing of cooked foods. Dental calculus residues confirmed common consumption of cooked foods, fruits, and root-tubers. Cultivating crops with different water and growing season requirements necessitated diverse practices, potentially including selection of short-season varieties, hand watering, and growing crops over multiple rainy seasons. The latter two practices required increased labor inputs: access to labor was likely a key element supporting the nascent social hierarchy that emerged by the Middle Valdivia.

Experiments were conducted from 1989 to 1991 to determine the critical period of johnsongrass control in field corn. Maximum weed-infested and weed-free periods of 0 to 20 wk after corn emergence were maintained by either hand weeding or nicosulfuron application. Interference duration effects on corn grain yield were not affected by johnsongrass control methods. The critical period for johnsongrass control was determined to be between 3 and 6.5 wk after corn emergence to avoid losses above 5% of yield produced by full-season weed-free corn.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate placement techniques for preemergence applications of pendimethalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine] in grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.]. The first technique consisted of row shields mounted behind the planter units. Shields maintained an untreated strip over the crop drill and allowed successful crop establishment with pendimethalin at 1.1 kg ai/ha, despite a simulated, intense rainfall of 3.8 cm within 24 h after planting. A second technique, which consisted of a special nozzle arrangement, was evaluated in no-till grain sorghum. The nozzle arrangement allowed a broadcast herbicide application but maintained an untreated strip over the crop drill. No stand reductions occurred using this technique at pendimethalin rates of 1.1 and 2.2 kg/ha. In a growth chamber experiment, preemergence applications of pendimethalin severely injured grain sorghum when the soil was wet at the time of emergence, but injury was reduced under hot, dry conditions.

Common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. #3 CYNDA] and johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] ecotypes were collected from seven locations in Texas. Ecotype responses to glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine], SC-0224 (trimethylsulfonium carboxymethylaminomethylphosphonate), sethoxydim {2-[l-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one}, fluazifop {(+)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, and quizalofop {(+)-2-[4-[(6-chloro-2-quinoxalinyl)oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} were evaluated in 1982, 1983, and 1984. Johnsongrass ecotype-by-herbicide interactions and ecotype differences were detected in only one of three years. Differences were observed consistently among the herbicide treatments. Numerous bermudagrass ecotype-by-herbicide interactions were detected each year with greater diversity occurring with less-than-optimum herbicide rates. The interactions were herbicide-by-ecotype specific and were not predictable with respect to geographic site of collection.

Texas panicum (Panicum texanum Buckl.) seed were collected and treatments applied in an effort to increase germination. Also, plants were grown in the field and growth characteristics studied. Poor seed germination was obtained with all treatments, but wide variation in storage temperature produced the best germination. Seedlings emerged from seed planted as deep as 3 inches. An average of 118 heads per plant and 195 seed per head were produced, or 23,010 seeds per plant. Plant, seed head, and seed development followed sigmoid growth patterns. The species was resistant to most preplant and preemergence herbicides used in screening experiments.

Experiments with similar experimental design, soil, and planting date were conducted between 1975 and 1979 to evaluate the interference of jimsonweed on soybeans and cotton in Alabama (AL), Arkansas (AR), and Mississippi (MS). Jimsonweed densities were 0, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 plants 12 m−1 of row. Because of variation in rainfall patterns, geographic region influenced jimsonweed interference in cotton but not in soybeans. Even though jimsonweed interference was reduced by lack of rainfall, jimsonweed was more competitive in the less competitive cotton than in soybeans. Jimsonweed at 64 plants 12 m−1 of row was more competitive with cotton than soybeans, causing a 56 and 16% yield reduction, respectively. Position of jimsonweed to the soybean row did not influence competitiveness. Interspecific interference with soybeans caused one-third more reduction in jimsonweed fresh weight and capsules per plant than interspecific interference with cotton. The potential for jimsonweed to become a problem in southern soybeans is less than its potential in cotton because of the competitive ability of soybeans to reduce the growth and reproductive potential of jimsonweed.

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate weed control systems in a conservation tillage rotation of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] – cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) – wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Herbicide systems included fall and spring/summer inputs of high and low intensity. Tillage regimes were no-till (NT) and reduced-till (RT) systems; the latter included fall primary tillage followed by spring stale seedbed planting. Both tillage systems utilized controlled traffic lanes and wide, raised beds. Effective johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] control required intense herbicide inputs at one or both application periods, i.e., in the fall and/or spring/summer. Grain sorghum and cotton yields for the most intense weed control system, which included high inputs in both the fall and spring/summer, were not superior to systems that included high inputs in only one of the two application periods. Seedling johnsongrass emergence occurred before spring planting in RT (but not in NT) in 2 of 3 yr, and control measures were ineffective. After 3 yr, the predominant weeds were johnsongrass and browntop panicum (Panicum fasciculatum Sw. # PANFA).

Growth chamber and field studies were conducted to investigate the possibility of an interaction between the herbicides 4-(methylsulfonyl)-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropylaniline (nitralin), a,a,a-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine (trifluralin), 3- (m-tri-fluromethylphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (fluometuron), and 2,4-bis(isopropylamino)-6-methylmercapto-s-triazine (prometryne), and the seedling disease organism Rhizoctonia solani Kuehn in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). When high levels of trifluralin or prometryne were used in the growth chamber, an interaction with the pathogen that was injurious to the cotton occurred. Prometryne and fluometuron produced an antagonistic effect on R. solani.

Under field conditions, R. solani usually caused cotton injury. Interactions injurious to the cotton occurred between trifluralin and a low level of R. solani and between nitralin and a high level R. solani infestation. No interactions occurred with fluometuron or prometryne. In all instances, the effect occurred only when the herbicides were being used at high rates.

Greenhouse experiments in central Texas assessed the relative importance of above- and belowground interactions of semidwarf Mit wheat and Marshall ryegrass during vegetative growth. One experiment used partitions to compare the effect of no (controls), aboveground only, belowground only, and full interaction for 75 d after planting (DAP) one wheat and nine ryegrass plants in soil volumes of 90, 950, and 3,800 ml. The results with the different soil volumes were similar. Wheat growth in the aboveground interaction only did not differ from controls. However, the full or belowground only interaction of wheat with ryegrass reduced wheat height, leaf number, tillering, leaf area, percent total nonstructural carbohydrates in shoot, and dry weights of leaves, stems, and roots 45 and 75 DAP compared to controls. Wheat in full and belowground interaction only did not differ from one another in growth. A replacement series experiment of 56 d also showed that the competitive advantage of ryegrass was relatively greater in root than in shoot growth. No allelopathic response of wheat to ryegrass occurred. While the tallness of the semidwarf wheat minimized aboveground interference by ryegrass, the root growth of the thinner and more fibrous roots of ryegrass greatly enhanced its belowground competitiveness.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate sensitivity of red rice ecotypes from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas to soil- and foliar-applied herbicides. Ecotype response to herbicides was variable. Molinate at 4.48 kg ai/ha controlled red rice ecotypes 92 to 100% and cultivars ‘Lemont,’ ‘Mars,’ and ‘Maybelle’ 39 to 63%. Red rice control with thiobencarb at 4.48 kg ai/ha was at least 89%. The tank mixture of fenoxaprop at 0.08 kg ai/ha plus fluazifop-P at 0.10 kg ai/ha controlled red rice and rice cultivars more than for either herbicide applied alone. Red rice and rice cultivar control with paraquat at 0.70 kg ai/ha was 83 to 100%. Blackhulled red rice TX 4 was less sensitive to paraquat and glufosinate than other ecotypes and cultivars. Glufosinate at 1.12 kg ai/ha was required to provide at least 94% control of ecotype TX 4.

Studies were conducted to observe the effect of full and reduced rates of postemergence (POST) herbicides on seedling and rhizome johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense) at different growth stages. Herbicides and labeled rates included primisulfuron at 40 g/ha, nicosulfuron at 35 g/ha, fluazifop-P at 210 g/ha, and clethodim at 140 g/ha. Contour graphs to predict johnsongrass control at different growth stages and herbicide rates were developed. Excellent seedling and rhizome johnsongrass control was obtained with reduced rates of herbicides applied at the three- to five-leaf stages. Primisulfuron at 20 g/ha resulted in 90% or greater control of seedling johnsongrass in the three- to four-leaf stage. Rhizome johnsongrass at this growth stage required 30 g/ha of primisulfuron for the same level of control. Nicosulfuron at 17.5 and 26.3 g/ha provided 90% or greater control up to the four-leaf stage of seedling and rhizome johnsongrass, respectively. Fluazifop-P and clethodim were more effective than primisulfuron and nicosulfuron. Fluazifop-P at 105 g/ha resulted in 90% or greater control of seedling and rhizome johnsongrass up to the seven- and five-leaf stages, respectively. Clethodim at 35 g/ha controlled seedling johnsongrass at least 90% up to the eight-leaf stage. Clethodim at 70 g/ha provided 90% or greater control of rhizome johnsongrass if applied at the three- to four-leaf stages.

A population level, two-compartment, temperaturedependent model that predicts date of seedling johnsongrass flowering was formulated. The model consisted of a fourparameter poikilotherm rate equation to describe development rate as a function of temperature and a temperature-independent Weibull function to distribute flowering times for the population. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of temperature, nitrogen availability, and water availability on development of seedling johnsongrass. Development was most sensitive to temperature while the effect of nitrogen concentration and water availability was minimum and inconsistent. The model was tested against three independent field data sets and provided accurate prediction of flowering dates for each data set.

Research was conducted from 1982 through 1984 on a Shipps clay soil (Udic chromustert) in east-central Texas to determine the density-dependent effects and critical periods of johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] competition with cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Two experiments were conducted each year, one to assess cotton yield response to increasing johnsongrass density and the second to establish the johnsongrass-free requirement of cotton and the johnsongrass competition period. A critical minimum density of 2 plants/9.8 m of row was observed. Full-season johnsongrass competition densities exceeding 2 plants/9.8 m of row resulted in seed cotton yield reductions each year. Yield decline was most rapid as density increased from 2 to 8 plants/9.8 m of row. Yield loss averaged 1, 4, 14, 40, 65, and 70% for johnsongrass densities of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 plants/9.8 m of row, respectively. Percent yield loss was proportional to yield potential at johnsongrass densities of 4 and 8 plants/9.8 m of row. Three to four weeks of rhizome johnsongrass competition or 6 weeks of seedling johnsongrass competition resulted in significant yield reductions. Maintaining cotton johnsongrass free for 4 weeks did not prevent significant yield reductions.

Transpirations of cotton and velvetleaf plants competing for water and light were estimated with heat balance stem flow gauges in a controlled environment. Cotton and velvetleaf plants were grown together in pots and monitored during fluctuations in soil water, irradiance, air temperature, and humidity. Shading from other plants imposed light competition on velvetleaf or cotton. Velvetleaf used significantly more water than cotton given ample water and light. Transpiration by both species was reduced in dry soil, but velvetleaf transpiration was reduced primarily by leaf abscision, while cotton leaves did not abscise. Both cotton and velvetleaf plants transpired significantly less when shaded. Leaf water potentials indicated that shaded plants experienced reduced evaporative demand suggesting that shading reduced plant stress in dry soil. Competition for water was strongly influenced by competition for light.

Johnsongrass control systems that included commercially available corn herbicides applied to crop sequences of continuous corn or corn–cotton–corn rotation were evaluated over a 3-yr period at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in Burleson County. Herbicide treatments evaluated were EPTC + R-25788 applied preplant incorporated (PPI); metolachlor applied preemergence (PRE); nicosulfuron applied postemergence (POST); and the combination of metolachlor PRE and glyphosate POST applied after corn harvest. Weed control practices applied to plots planted to cotton in the second growing season provided excellent johnsongrass control (≈ 95%). Visual control ratings indicated that nicosulfuron provided the best johnsongrass control (> 80%) among the herbicides evaluated all three years. Metolachlor and glyphosate combinations provided acceptable johnsongrass control the third year of the experiment in both cropping sequences. Corn grain yield and johnsongrass control were best in cotton-rotated plots. The highest returns observed in continuous corn were from either nicosulfuron or the combination of metolachlor and glyphosate. Net returns for all control systems in corn–cotton–corn rotated plots were greater than the weedy check and were equivalent to the lead systems in continuous corn.

Research was conducted to formulate a temperature-dependent population level model for johnsongrass seed germination and rhizome bud break. A nonlinear poikilotherm rate equation was used to describe development rate as a function of temperature, and a temperature-independent Weibull function was used to distribute development times for the population. Seed germination and initiation of rhizome bud break of johnsongrass were collected under constant temperature conditions to parameterize the model. Seed germination rate increased with temperature up to 36 C, then declined at 40 C. Rate of rhizome bud break increased with temperature up to 32 C, then rapidly decreased with further temperature increases. Rate of rhizome bud break was higher than for seed germination at temperatures of 32 C or below, but lower at higher temperatures. Time to first germination or bud break event was longer for seed than for rhizomes, but subsequent progression of development was higher for seed. A population level temperature-dependent model was developed by coupling the poikilotherm equation with the Weibull function. The model was validated against two independent seed germination and three independent rhizome bud germination data sets.

Plant characteristics of red rice ecotypes obtained from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, including 11 strawhulled, five blackhulled, two goldhulled, and one brownhulled type, were evaluated under field conditions. Most ecotypes were uniform and stable but manifested considerable genetic variability. Red rice plants had pubescent leaves, were taller with lighter green color, and produced more tillers and panicles per plant than rice cultivars ‘Lemont,’ ‘Mars,’ and ‘Maybelle.’ Most ecotypes were highly susceptible to seed shattering starting about 14 d after anthesis when seed moisture was more than 25%. Seeds of most ecotypes were highly dormant at harvest. Rice cultivars had a larger flag leaf and more total leaf area per plant at anthesis and produced more seeds per panicle than red rice. Some red rice ecotypes had plant characteristics closely related to cultivated rice suggesting natural hybridization with rice.

Field experiments were conducted at two locations in 1989 and 1990 to investigate possible interactions between POST applications of primisulfuron and selected soil-applied carbamate and organophosphate corn insecticides. Insecticides were applied in-furrow at planting, at recommended use rates. Primisulfuron was applied POST to corn in the three- or five-leaf stage at 0, 20, 40, or 80 g ai ha-1. Combinations of primisulfuron with disulfoton, fonofos, isozophos, or terbufos resulted in foliar and root injury, plant height reductions, and yield losses. No foliar or root injury, plant height reductions, or yield losses were observed from combinations of primisulfuron and carbaryl, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, or diazinon. Differences among and within the experiments are attributed to edaphic and environmental conditions at the time of primisulfuron application.

Research was conducted to determine the utility of a single, temperature-independent Weibull function for describing cumulative seed germination under several temperature regimes with 14 sets of weed and crop seed germination data. A modified cumulative Weibull function was derived to distribute germination times for individuals within the population and distributed the occurrence of germination given ample sample size and appropriate sample interval. The descriptive and predictive attributes of the stochastic model component are well suited for incorporation into seed germination models and are likely applicable to models to predict distribution of times for other developmental processes of plants.
