This article overviews the earliest weed management book published in the United States. The most problematic weeds of that era are named, along with suggestions for their control.

PRE and POST herbicide options were evaluated to control perilla mint, a potentially deadly plant for livestock. The germination requirements of seed from weedy populations were also investigated to better understand and predict emergence timing. POST applications of aminocyclopyrachlor blends, glyphosate, picloram+2,4-D, aminopyralid+2,4-D, and 2,4-D alone provided superior control of perilla mint when applied in the early reproductive growth stage. Picloram+2,4-D and aminocyclopyrachlor+chlorsulfuron also provided soil residual activity and the most effective PRE control followed by pendimethalin and aminopyralid+2,4-D. Seed from weedy populations tend to germinate in a range of night/day soil temperatures from 10–15 C to 25–30 C. Therefore, application and activation of the most effective PRE treatments should be made before these temperatures occur in areas where weedy perilla mint populations are found.

Control of noxious weeds such as cogongrass depend heavily on chemical treatment, but success is limited unless integrated with other practices. Utilization of cover crops in the system is ideal to avoid the use of excess herbicide and replace vegetation that will resist cogongrass reinvasion. Greenhouse studies were conducted from 2013 through 2015 at Mississippi State University with the objective to evaluate ‘AG4934’ RR/STS soybean, Korean lespedeza, crimson clover and ‘Durana’ white clover tolerance to soil-applied imazapyr at selected rates and various planting times after application. Plastic containers filled with a mixture of 2:1 sand:topsoil were treated with imazapyr at 0, 70, 140 and 280 g ae ha–1. Legume species were planted 0, 1, 3 and 6 months after treatment (MAT). The factorial experimental design included legume species, imazapyr rate and planting time. At 6 weeks after each planting, the number of seedlings, average plant height and shoot biomass were measured. Statistical analysis revealed the imazapyr rate x planting time interaction was significant with respect to number of emerged seedlings, average height and shoot biomass per plant for each species. It was observed that the legumes planted at 0 MAT of imazapyr at 70 g ae ha–1 or higher reduced emerged seedlings, average height and biomass production. In general, seeds planted 1 MAT or later in combination with these same herbicide rates, showed less growth reductions than treatments seeded 0 MAT. In conclusion, sites treated with imazapyr rates from 70 to 280 g ae ha–1 for weed control, should not be seeded with legume ground covers less than 1 month after treatment to reduce emergence failure, plant height and biomass production.

Field validation studies were conducted in seven Mississippi environments at three application timings to confirm postemergence (POST) recommendations generated by the computer herbicide decision aids HERB and SWC. HERB and SWC agreed on herbicide treatments in only 14% of the location–application timing combinations. Weed scientists involved in the study agreed on treatment recommendations approximately 33% of the time. The HERB model agreed with a faculty member on only one herbicide treatment, while the SWC model was slightly more agreeable in this regard. Subsequent weed flushes, varied production practices, and delayed weed emergence accounted for a majority of the underestimated predictions given by HERB. Only 55% of the predicted values presented for estimated weed control ratings were similar to actual weed control ratings. Over 75% of the predictions that differed from actual weed control values were underpredictions. Recommendations from both computer models were effective in reducing yield loss below that of the untreated check, and recommendations from the HERB model generally improved yield more than those from the SWC model in most instances. HERB and SWC predictions of yield losses with no weed control were not significantly different from the actual yield loss from the untreated check in nine of the 12 instances at Starkville, seven of the 12 instances at Brooksville, six of the 12 instances at Newton, and three of the six instances at Hollandale. The HERB model estimated yield loss similar to that of the actual yield loss 83% of the time, while predictions from the SWC model were accurate 76% of the time. HERB overestimated yield loss in six of 21 application timing–experiment combinations and underestimated yield loss only once. Yield loss was overpredicted as high as 78%. SWC overpredicted yield loss in five of 21 instances and also underestimated in five instances. SWC did not overpredict yield loss to the same magnitude as HERB in many instances.

One and two postemergence (POE) applications of the butyl ester of fluazifop {(±)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy]phenoxy] propanoic acid} or sethoxydim (2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} following preemergence (PRE) application of fluometuron {N,N-dimethyl-N′-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl] urea} were compared to a preplant-incorporated (PPI) application of trifluralin [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine] or pendimethalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine] plus fluometuron PRE or pendimethalin plus fluometuron PRE for annual grass control in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and net economic return to land, overhead, and management. One POE application of either fluazifop or sethoxydim following fluometuron PRE resulted in greater control of a high population of broadleaf signalgrass [Brachiaria platyphylla (Griseb.) Nash. # BRAPP] and greater yield and net return than a PPI application of trifluralin or pendimethalin plus fluometuron PRE. A second application of fluazifop or sethoxydim increased late-season control but did not increase yield or net return. In a high population of large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L. # DIGSA), fluometuron PRE plus two POE applications of fluazifop or sethoxydim resulted in grass control, lint yield, and net return similar to trifluralin or pendimethalin PPI plus fluometuron PRE. No differences in grass control, crop response, or net return were noted between PPI application of trifluralin or pendimethalin. Control of broadleaf signalgrass and large crabgrass with pendimethalin plus fluometuron PRE was less than with pendimethalin PPI plus fluometuron PRE. In fields with a low population of large crabgrass, fall panicum (Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. # PANDI), and goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. # ELEIN], fluometuron PRE provided excellent season-long control. No benefits were obtained from addition of a grass herbicide. No treatments affected cotton maturity or fiber quality.

Field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of tank-mix and sequential postemergence (POE) applications of the insecticides carbaryl and dimethoate with sethoxydim on large crabgrass control and cotton tolerance. Large crabgrass control was similar with sethoxydim and sethoxydim-dimethoate tank mixtures. Although tank mixing carbaryl with sethoxydim reduced control, it was not reduced when carbaryl was applied 2 days before or 2 days after applying sethoxydim. Neither the insecticides nor sethoxydim applied alone or as tank mixtures injured cotton or affected lint yield, percent lint, fiber length, fiber length uniformity, fiber strength, or micronaire.

In 1987 and 1988, effects of full-season interference of individual weeds on cotton yield were measured with area of influence procedures. In 1987, one spurred anoda, common cocklebur, large crabgrass, jimsonweed, common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, or prickly sida plant per 3 m of row reduced cotton yield between 1% and 7%. Sicklepod did not cause a detectable yield loss. Redroot pigweed, common cocklebur and common ragweed caused 7%, 6% and 5% yield loss, respectively, in 1987. In row weed influence varied from 17 cm (large crabgrass interference) to 86 cm (common cocklebur interference). In 1988, yield losses by individual weeds ranged from 3% to 27%. Common cocklebur, jimsonweed, and common ragweed reduced cotton yields 28%, 15% and 12%, respectively. Spurred anoda and common cocklebur influenced 160 cm and 136 cm of cotton row, respectively. Sicklepod influenced only 47 cm of cotton row.

Field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of tank-mixing fluometuron {N,N-dimethyl-N′-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl] urea} or MSMA (monosodium salt of methylarsonic acid) with sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} or the butyl ester of fluazifop {(±)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy] phenoxy] propanic acid} on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) tolerance and large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. # DIGSA] control. Postemergence (over-the-top) application of 1.7 kg ai/ha of fluometuron reduced cotton lint yield 17 to 23% in three of four tests. No yield reduction resulted from postemergence application of 1.1 kg ae/ha of MSMA. Tank-mixing 0.1 or 0.2 kg ai/ha of sethoxydim or 0.1 or 0.2 kg ae/ha of fluazifop with fluometuron or MSMA did not alter the effect of fluometuron or MSMA on cotton yield. Tank mixtures of 1.1 to 2.2 kg/ha of fluometuron plus sethoxydim or fluazifop were antagonistic. No antagonism was observed when fluometuron was applied 3 days before or 6 h following sethoxydim or fluazifop application. Tank-mixing 1.1 or 2.2 kg/ha of MSMA with sethoxydim or fluazifop initially reduced control of large crabgrass. Antagonism was not observed at 4 weeks after tank-mix application of MSMA plus sethoxydim, and was observed in only one of three experiments 4 weeks following tank-mix application of MSMA plus fluazifop. When antagonism was observed with tank mixtures of fluazifop plus MSMA, sequential application of MSMA 1 to 7 days before application of fluazifop did not overcome the antagonism. No antagonism occurred when MSMA was applied 6 or more hours after fluazifop application.

In 1994, herbicide efficacy and competitive index databases were adjusted in the soybean herbicide recommendation program HERB to best reflect data for Mississippi. Field experiments were conducted to compare efficacy and economics of postemergence herbicides recommended by HERB and MSU-HERB. The study was conducted utilizing four locations over 2 yr, which provided different soil types, weed spectra, and environmental conditions with which to evaluate weed control from herbicides recommended by these programs. HERB and MSU-HERB agreed on an herbicide recommendation in 62% of the modeling runs. Herbicides recommended by both software versions were generally effective for controlling the predominant weed species at each location. In instances where there was a significant difference in herbicide efficacy between herbicides recommended by HERB and MSU-HERB, improved weed control resulted from herbicides recommended by MSU-HERB. In 1994, excellent moisture conditions enabled soybean to gain a significant competitive advantage over weeds and, as a result, yield loss predictions after treatment were overestimated in most instances. Conversely, 1995 environmental conditions better represented average Mississippi growing conditions, and yield loss predictions after treatment were more accurate. Yield loss prediction accuracy of HERB versions was related to the length of interference between soybean and weeds. Thus, prediction accuracy of HERB and MSU-HERB was similar. Soybean yield increase and net economic gain following MSU-HERB recommendations was as high or higher than following HERB recommendations.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate PRE and POST cotton herbicides for control of MSMA-resistant (R) and -susceptible (S) common cocklebur biotypes, and to determine potential cross-resistance of the R biotype to other arsenical and membrane disruptor herbicides. Cyanazine and clomazone applied PRE were the most effective herbicides for control of R populations. Lactofen or cyanazine in combination with MSMA controlled R and S biotypes better than fluometuron or pyrithiobac combined with MSMA. MSMA-resistant common cocklebur was not cross-resistant to other arsenical herbicides. Significant differences in cellular electrolyte leakage and chlorophyll content of the treated leaf between biotypes were not evident for paraquat, acifluorfen, and MSMA.

An area of influence method with biweekly destructive harvests 5 through 19 wk after planting (WAP) was used to monitor the reciprocal interference of common cocklebur and cotton in 1987 and 1988. Plant heights, leaf area, and leaf, stem, boll, fiber, and total plant biomass dry weights were measured in 15-cm increments away from common cocklebur or from a randomly selected cotton plant out to 105 cm. Data indicated that cotton less than 60 cm from common cocklebur was shorter, had less leaf area and lower leaf, stem, boll, and biomass dry weights than cotton beyond 60 cm from common cocklebur or cotton grown without common cocklebur interference. Differences in leaf area and biomass between cotton grown with and without common cocklebur interference were greater at and beyond 13 WAP sample dates than before 13 WAP. By 15 WAP, cotton leaf area and biomass were reduced an estimated 11% and 15%, respectively, averaged over the entire 105 cm of row. Cotton yield, harvested 27 WAP, was reduced an estimated 31% on plants grown with one common cocklebur plant per 2.1 m. Cotton yield was reduced on plants out to 99 cm from common cocklebur. Common cocklebur and cotton plants grown alone were taller, had greater leaf area, and greater leaf, stem, and biomass dry weight than those respective plants grown adjacent to cotton. Common cocklebur grown alone produced 67% more biomass than did cotton grown alone. Cotton plants grown adjacent to other cotton plants produced 89% and 96% less boll and fiber weight, respectively, than plants grown alone.

Cogongrass, a rhizomatous perennial, is among the world's most troublesome weeds. Research was conducted at the Southern Weed Science Research Unit, Stoneville, MS, to determine cogongrass rhizome mortality with increasing temperature and duration of exposure to heat and to determine if 2,3,5 triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) could be used to evaluate cogongrass rhizome mortality following heat treatment. Cogongrass rhizome mortality was 100% at 65, 79, 93, 107, 121, 149, 177, and 187 C at time periods greater than or equal to 25, 5, 2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 2, 2 and 1 min, respectively. The duration of heat required for cogongrass mortality decreases as temperature increased. The standard greenhouse bioassay was more effective than tetrazolium chloride in predicting viability of cogongrass rhizomes following heat treatments.

Prickly nightshades are troublesome weeds of natural habitats, pastures, feedlots, right-of-ways, and croplands. Native and nonnative invasive weedy species of prickly nightshades were compared to determine growth, development, and morphological differences. Six (Solanum bahamense, Solanum capsicoides, Solanum carolinense, Solanum dimidiatum, Solanum donianum, and Solanum pumilum) of the 18 species of prickly nightshades studied are native to the US. Two species, Solanum citrullifolium and Solanum rostratum, are annuals; the others are perennials or are short lived perennials or annuals in northern extremes of their range in North America. Tables were developed from new and existing data to differentiate vegetative and reproductive characteristics among 18 species of prickly nightshade found in the southeastern US. In greenhouse experiments, average plant height ranged from 24 and 26 cm (9.45 and 10.24 inch) for S. carolinense and Solanum jamaicense, respectively, to 100 and 105 cm for Solanum tampicense and Solanum sisymbriifolium, respectively at 10 wk after emergence (WAE). By 10 WAE, the average number of leaves per plant ranged from < 10 for S. carolinense and Solanum torvum to > 40 leaves/plant for S. rostratum and S. dimidiatum. Average number of nodes/plant main stem ranged from 11, 12, and 14 nodes in S. jamaicense, S. torvum, and S. carolinense, respectively, to 54 nodes in S. rostratum. Average plant dry weights were collected at 10 WAE and were greatest for Solanum mammosum and (> 17 g/plant) (0.6001 oz/plant) and least for S. carolinense (1 g/plant). Based on these data, nightshade growth rate and dry weight were variable among some species and variability may be a result of phenology and life cycles, annual or perennial. Plants of S. rostratum, an annual, were relatively tall and produced high number of nodes and leaves and had the shortest period from emergence to flower among the prickly nightshades evaluated.

Cogongrass is a highly invasive, perennial grass that is found on all continents, except Antarctica. It continues to spread at an alarming rate in the southeastern United States. Cogongrass has been reported from a wide array of habitats; however, soils from areas where cogongrass grows have never been characterized. Live cogongrass plants, herbarium specimens, and soil samples were collected from 53 cogongrass populations from across the 10 physiographic regions and land use areas in Mississippi. Cogongrass leaf and inflorescence morphology varied among sites, and plants were found in soils varying widely in texture (ranging from 28 to 86% sand, 3 to 48% silt, and 6 to 43% clay), organic matter content (ranging from 0.9 to 5.0%), pH (ranging from 4.4 to 8.0), and nutrient status: 6 to 190 kg ha−1 (15 to 470 lb A−1) of phosphorus (P), 46 to 734 kg ha−1 of potassium (K), 150 to 7,620 kg ha−1 of calcium (Ca), 26 to 1,090 kg ha−1 of magnesium (Mg), 1 to 190 kg ha−1 of zinc (Zn), 145 to 800 kg ha−1 of estimated sulfur (S) based on organic matter, and 57 to 300 kg ha−1 of sodium (Na). These soil parameters were highly variable among cogongrass populations, even within physiographic regions or land use areas, and encompassed much of the soil physiochemical diversity within the state. Soil characteristics were significantly correlated with leaf length (Ca, K, Mg, P, Zn, and percentage of sand and silt), leaf width (Ca, P, Mg, and percentage of sand and silt), the leaf length-to-width ratio (K and P), inflorescence length (Na, P, and pH), inflorescence width (S, organic matter, and pH), and the inflorescence length-to-width ratio (S and organic matter). These data indicate that cogongrass is able to establish, emerge, grow, and reproduce on a wide array of soils in Mississippi. This ability provides cogongrass an advantage over other plant species that are more limited in the soil types that support their growth.

Research trials conducted at two locations in the spring of 2004 evaluated the effect of soil temperature as an indicator for application timings of certain sulfonylurea herbicides for perennial ryegrass control while maintaining acceptable turfgrass quality during bermudagrass spring transition. Herbicide application timings began when soil temperatures reached 17 C (April 14, 2004). Greater perennial ryegrass control 4 wk after initial treatment (WAIT) was achieved when sulfonylurea herbicides were applied at 26 C soil temperature compared to 17 or 21 C. Bermudagrass density 6 WAIT increased with treatments applied at 26 C soil temperature compared to cooler soil temperatures. There was a decrease in overall turfgrass quality 2 WAIT when treatments were applied at 17 C. However, by 4 WAIT all application timings provided overall turfgrass quality comparable to the untreated control. Acceptable turfgrass quality and maximum perennial ryegrass control was achieved by delaying transition-aid herbicide applications until soil temperatures reached 26 C and growing conditions were more conducive to bermudagrass growth.

Path rush can become problematic on golf course fairways, especially on roughs where continuous golf cart or maintenance equipment traffic occurs. Research trials conducted in 2003 and 2004 compared the efficacy of 2,4-D and mixtures containing 2,4-D in single or sequential applications to herbicides without 2,4-D for path rush control in bermudagrass roughs. Sequential applications of 1.1 kg ae/ha 2,4-D or 0.8 + 0.2 + 0.1 kg ae/ha 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba provided 95% path rush control with no injury to bermudagrass, 15 wk after initial treatment (WAIT). Single applications of 1.1 + 0.3 + 0.1 kg/ha 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba or 1.1 kg/ha 2,4-D provided at least 81% path rush control, 15 WAIT. Treatments without 2,4-D did not provide acceptable levels of control (34% or less, 15 WAIT). 2,4-D applied alone or in preformulated mixtures provided excellent path rush control compared to treatments without 2,4-D. Sequential applications of these treatments provided greater path rush control than single applications. However, only the sequential application of 0.8 + 0.2 + 0.1 kg/ha 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba provided greater path rush control than the single application. Results from these studies suggest that 2,4-D is a key herbicide for path rush control.

Greenhouse, growth chamber, and winter survival studies were conducted at Stoneville, MS from 1996 to 2002 to determine growth, time to first flower, and winter survival of wetland nightshade. At 12 wk after emergence, wetland nightshade plants had 58-, 45-, 48-, and 4-cm heights, respectively; 24, 21, 21, and 12 nodes/plant, respectively; 62, 31, 36, and 21 leaves/plant, respectively; and 7.1, 3.9, 5.1, and 0.3 g/plant dry weights, respectively, at temperatures of 26/36, 20/30, 14/24, and 8/18 (±0.5) C at the 14/10 day/night length. Flowering occurred at 79, 85, and 85 days after emergence at 26/36, 20/30, and 14/24 C night/day, respectively at the 14/10 day/night cycle. Wetland nightshade plants did not flower at 8/18 C. Wetland nightshade growth was adequate for flowering and fruit production in additional areas of the southeastern United States with night/day temperatures greater than or equal to 14/24 C. Winter survival was greater than or equal to 33% for established wetland nightshade plants in 5 of 6(1996 to 2002) above water levels and 82% from 20 cm below the water surface. Based on these results, wetland nightshade has the potential to continue to spread in the United States.

Hand-held hyperspectral reflectance data were collected in the summers of 2002, 2003, and 2004 to differentiate unique spectral characteristics of common turfgrass and weed species. Turfgrass species evaluated were: bermudagrass, ‘Tifway 419’; zoysiagrass, ‘Meyer’; St. Augustinegrass, ‘Raleigh’; common centipedegrass; and creeping bentgrass, ‘Crenshaw’. Weed species evaluated were: dallisgrass, southern crabgrass, eclipta, and Virginia buttonweed. Reflectance data were collected from greenhouse and field locations. An overall classification accuracy of 85% was achieved for all species in the field. A total of 21 spectral bands between 378 and 1,000 nm that were consistent over the three data collection periods were used for analysis. Only centipedegrass, zoysiagrass, and dallisgrass were correctly classified less than 80% of the time. An overall classification accuracy of 69% was achieved for the greenhouse species. Spectral bands used in this analysis ranged from 353 to 799 nm. Creeping bentgrass and Virginia buttonweed were classified correctly at 96 and 92%, respectively.

Field and greenhouse studies were conducted from 1996 to 2000 to determine tropical soda apple fruit size required for mature seed, overwintering survival potential of seeds, and growth and fruit production in a containment area near Stoneville, MS (latitude 33°25′N). Seedling emergence was ≥ 50% from tropical soda apple fruit > 1.8 cm in diameter. Tropical soda apple overwintering emergence was 14, 10, 48, 42, and 13% from seed alone and 86, 83, 48, 41, and 18% for seeds in tropical soda apple fruit overwintering at 100, 0, −5, −10, and −15 cm from the soil surface, respectively. Before frost (early November), average tropical soda apple plant heights were 0.8, 0.6, and 0.7 m; plant diameters were 2.6, 1.7, and 2 m; fruit produced per tropical soda apple plant were 415, 342, 128; and plant weights were 9.9, 9.5, and 4.9 kg at 27 wk after transplanting (WATP) for 1996, 1997, and 1998, respectively. Regeneration from overwintering tropical soda apple roots varied depending on the winter conditions. These results suggest that tropical soda apple plants can survive mild winters.

A survey was conducted in 2000 across 38 counties in Mississippi on 192 randomly selected soybean fields to assess the most common occurring weeds. Statewide, prickly sida, which was present in 40% of the fields sampled, was the most common. Pitted and entireleaf morningglory were present in 34 and 29% of the soybean fields, respectively. Broadleaf signalgrass and barnyardgrass were the most common annual grasses, and yellow nutsedge was the most common sedge observed. Trumpetcreeper and redvine were the most common perennial vines. In the Mississippi Delta region of Mississippi, prickly sida was present in 45% of the fields sampled. The trend of occurrence of other species in the Delta mirrored statewide results. In eastern Mississippi, prickly sida and broadleaf signalgrass were found in 43% of soybean fields. Sicklepod, common cocklebur, and balloonvine were more prevalent in eastern Mississippi, when compared with the Mississippi Delta. Since 1982, there has been a sevenfold decline in the occurrence of common cocklebur and a fourfold decline in the occurrence of johnsongrass in Mississippi soybean. Also, the occurrences of redroot pigweed, common ragweed, and fall panicum have declined. Conversely, the occurrences of yellow nutsedge and broadleaf signalgrass have increased. The occurrences of barnyardgrass, prickly sida, redvine and trumpetcreeper have been relatively static over the past two decades.
