Following a wave of terrorist bombings in the mid-1990s, France established Medical-Psychological Emergency Units (MPEUs - “Cellule d’Urgence Médico-Psychologique - CUMP”). These units aim to provide immediate mental health and psychosocial support to victims and emergency responders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bordeaux MPEU pioneered the use of cloud computing to coordinate real-time activity across thirteen regional mental health units that serve 6 million people.
Objectives:
Based on 30 years of disaster psychiatry expertise and national guidelines, this innovative approach was recognized by the governmental Regional Health Agency, leading to the development of an information system application (ISA) specifically tailored for managing mental health and psychosocial support during crisis events.
Method/Description:
The alpha version of the ISA for MPEU is being tested locally during the Paris 2024 Olympics. It is a multi-media app that offers various functionalities according to user profile. Volunteers are mobilized via the app on their smartphone, have real-time event tracking, and can record their clinical activity. For unit managers, it facilitates triggering the network, deploying resources, and coordinating real-time responses to the evolving crisis. For institutions, it enables monitoring of the ongoing crisis and adjusting responses. The app, designed for major multi-site events, will be beta tested in a full-scale disaster simulation in Bordeaux.

The ISA-MPEU improves the network’s capacity to provide rapid and effective support in emergencies, while at the same time providing a research tool through its database of mental health responses.
Les élections municipales de 2021 à la Ville de Québec ont été marquées par une forte compétition entre cinq candidats et une saillance des enjeux concernant la construction d'un tramway et d'un troisième lien autoroutier entre Québec et sa Rive-Sud. Ainsi, cette élection représente un contexte idéal pour étudier le comportement électoral au niveau local et plus spécifiquement le vote sur enjeu qui a été très peu étudié dans le contexte municipal. Nous soutenons que ces deux enjeux ont acquis une valeur symbolique et ont été exploités comme enjeu de brèche par le candidat à la mairie Jean-François Gosselin. À l'aide d'une analyse multivariée, nous testons la relation entre l'appui aux deux projets de transport et l'intention de vote. Nos résultats montrent que les attitudes des électeurs envers ces deux enjeux sont fortement corrélées avec leur choix de vote et suggèrent une continuité entre le comportement électoral municipal, provincial et fédéral, du moins lorsqu'il est question de vote sur les enjeux.
In situ elemental imaging of planetary surface regolith at a spatial resolution of 100s to 1000s of microns can provide evidence of the provenance of rocks or sediments and their habitability, and can identify post-depositional diagenetic alteration affecting preservation. We use high-resolution elemental maps and XRF spectra from MapX, a flight prototype in situ X-ray imaging instrument, to demonstrate this technology in rock types relevant to astrobiology. Examples are given for various petrologies and depositional/diagenetic environments, including ultramafic/mafic rocks, serpentinites, hydrothermal carbonates, evaporites, stromatolitic cherts and diagenetic concretions.
The present study examines whether neuroticism is predicted by genetic vulnerability, summarized as polygenic risk score for neuroticism (PRSN), in interaction with bullying, parental bonding, and childhood adversity. Data were derived from a general population adolescent and young adult twin cohort. The final sample consisted of 202 monozygotic and 436 dizygotic twins and 319 twin pairs. The Short Eysenck Personality questionnaire was used to measure neuroticism. PRSN was trained on the results from the Genetics of Personality Consortium (GPC) and United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) cohorts, yielding two different PRSN. Multilevel mixed-effects models were used to analyze the main and interacting associations of PRSN, childhood adversity, bullying, and parental bonding style with neuroticism. We found no evidence of gene–environment correlation. PRSN thresholds of .005 and .2 were chosen, based on GPC and UKB datasets, respectively. After correction for confounders, all the individual variables were associated with the expression of neuroticism: both PRSN from GPC and UKB, childhood adversity, maternal bonding, paternal bonding, and bullying in primary school and secondary school. However, the results indicated no evidence for gene–environment interaction in this cohort. These results suggest that genetic vulnerability on the one hand and negative life events (childhood adversity and bullying) and positive life events (optimal parental bonding) on the other represent noninteracting pathways to neuroticism.
An experiment was performed using stereo particle image velocimetry (SPIV) in the Laboratoire de Mécanique des Fluides de Lille boundary layer facility to determine all the derivative moments needed to estimate the average dissipation rate of the turbulence kinetic energy $\epsilon = 2 \nu \langle {\mathsf{s}}_{ij}{\mathsf{s}}_{ij} \rangle$, where ${\mathsf{s}}_{ij}$ is the fluctuating strain rate and $\langle ~\rangle$ denotes ensemble averages. Also measured were all the moments of the full average deformation rate tensor, as well as all of the first, second and third fluctuating velocity moments except those involving pressure. The Reynolds number was $Re_\theta = 7634$ or $Re_\tau = 2598$. The present paper gives the measured average dissipation, $\epsilon$ and the derivative moments comprising it. The results are compared with the earlier measurements of Balint, Wallace & Vukolavcevic (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 228, 1991, pp. 53–86) and Honkan & Andreopoulos (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 350, 1997, pp. 29–96) at lower Reynolds numbers and to new results from a plane channel flow DNS at comparable Reynolds number. Of special interest is the prediction by George & Castillo (Appl. Mech. Rev., vol. 50, 1997, pp. 689–729) and Wosnik, Castillo & George (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 421, 2000, pp. 115–145) that $\epsilon ^+ \propto {x_2^+}^{-1}$ for streamwise homogeneous flows and a nearly indistinguishable power law, $\epsilon \propto {x_2^+}^{\gamma -1}$, for boundary layers. In spite of the modest Reynolds number, the predictions seem to be correct. Then the statistical character of the velocity derivatives is examined in detail, and a particular problem is identified with the breakdown of local homogeneity inside $x_2^+ = 100$. A more general alternative for partially homogeneous turbulence flows is offered which is consistent with the observations. With the help of DNS, the spatial characteristics of the dissipation very near the wall are also examined in detail.
The survivability of mass casualties exposed to a chemical attack is dependent on clinical knowledge, evidence-based practice, as well as protection and decontamination capabilities. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the knowledge gaps that relate to an efficient extraction and care of mass casualties caused by exposure to chemicals.
Methods:
This systematic review was conducted from November 2018 through September 2020 in compliance with Cochrane guidelines. Five databases were used (MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, Embase, Cochrane, and CINAHL) to retrieve studies describing interventions performed to treat victims of chemical attacks (protection, decontamination, and treatment). The outcomes were patient’s health condition leading to his/her stabilization (primary) and death (secondary) due to interventions applied (medical, protection, and decontamination).
Results:
Of the 2,301 papers found through the search strategy, only four publications met the eligibility criteria. According to these studies, the confirmed chemical poisoning cases in acute settings resulting from the attacks in Matsumoto (1994), Tokyo (1995), and Damascus (2014) accounted for 1,333 casualties including 11 deaths. No study reported comprehensive prehospital clinical data in acute settings. No mention was made of the integration of specialized capabilities in medical interventions such as personal protective equipment (PPE) and decontamination to prevent a secondary exposure. Unfortunately, it was not possible to perform the planned meta-analysis.
Conclusions:
This study demonstrated gaps in clinical knowledge application regarding the medical extraction of casualties exposed during a chemical attack. Further research is required to optimize clinical practice integrating mixed capabilities (protection and decontamination) for the patient and medical staff.
Medical-psychological emergency units (Cellules d'Urgence Médico-Psychologiques, CUMP) are deployed following major events where there is a risk of psychological trauma, in order to provide acute and proper psychological care for the victims.
Aims
To describe and evaluate the risk of a psychological impact on CUMP professionals after their participation in the aftermath of the hurricane Irma natural disaster. CUMP teams consist of medical and paramedical staff, who can have permanent or volunteer status. We reasoned that there might be a psychological and emotional impact on CUMP professionals, despite their own expertise in the field, after their intervention following hurricane Irma.
Method
A cross-sectional survey was conducted during a feedback meeting. Participating professionals completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) scale (5th French version), which is composed of three subscales: compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS).
Results
A total of 53 participants were included with 24 (45.3%) psychiatrists, 15 (28.3%) paramedical staff and 14 (26.4%) psychologists. The median age was 46 years (range 39–55.5) and 29 (54.7%) were women. We found that psychiatrists compared with other professions had higher secondary traumatic stress scores (P = 0.007) and that volunteer psychiatrists had higher burnout scores than permanent psychiatrists (P = 0.03).
Conclusions
These preliminary results suggest a psychological impact attributable to leadership status, which was reserved for psychiatrists. The results also underline the need for a supportive accompaniment for such teams by promoting formation improvement, psychological support and team cohesion.
We report the first Hettangian theropod tracksite (~200 Ma) yielding a rich accumulation of plant remains from the Bleymard Strait (southern France). It constitutes an excellent opportunity to reconstruct lowermost Jurassic ecosystems hosting dinosaurs and which are still poorly documented in this area. Two morphotypes of tridactyl tracks are distinguished. They share similarities with Grallator and Kayentapus. Plant-bearing beds yield abundant leafy axes (Pagiophyllum peregrinum), male cones (Classostrobus sp.), wood (Brachyoxylon sp.) and pollen of conifers (Classopollis classoides). Sedimentological, petrological and mineralogical analyses demonstrated that, in the Dolomitic Formation from Bleymard, the palaeoenvironment progressively evolved from (1) a shoreface to a foreshore domain; to (2) a shallow environment that is restricted or occasionally open to the sea; then to (3) an intertidal to supratidal zone. The Hettangian theropod ecosystem of the Bleymard Strait was composed of tidal flats that were periodically emerged and bordered paralic environments inhabited by a littoral conifer-dominated forest in which Cheirolepidiaceae were the main component. The paucity of the palaeobotanical assemblage, as well as the xerophytic characteristics of Pagiophyllum, show that flora from Bleymard was adapted to withstand intense sunlight and coastal environments exposed to desiccant conditions coupled with salty sea spray, and dry conditions. These features are those of a conifer-dominated flora under a tropical to subtropical climate. The flora as well as the clay mineral analyses suggest contrasting seasons (cyclically dry then humid). This study supports that theropods were abundant and particularly adapted to this type of littoral environment bordering Cheirolepidiaceae-dominated forests.
