Increasing instances of herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass have limited turf managers’ options for chemical control. Endothall inhibits serine threonine protein phosphatase, a novel site of action for warm-season turf, and endothall use in hybrid bermudagrass is not extensively reported. Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass response to endothall. Five herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass biotypes were treated with increasing endothall rates and compared to two susceptible populations. One glyphosate-resistant annual bluegrass biotype was 2.3- to 3.3-fold more resistant to endothall depending on trial and susceptible biotype, and all other biotypes were endothall susceptible. Four field studies were established from 2022 to 2023 to evaluate the influence of endothall rate and application timing on bermudagrass and manilagrass turf injury and annual bluegrass control. These studies were arranged as a 3 × 4 factorial with three levels of application timing (fully dormant, 50% green, and 100% green) and four levels of herbicide (endothall applied at 1.12, 1.68, and 2.24 kg ai ha−1 and trifloxysulfuron applied at 27.8 g ai ha−1). Maximum observed turf injury was dependent on endothall rate and timing and was commercially acceptable (<30%) at the low and middle rates when applied to 100% green bermudagrass and at all rates when applied to dormant turf. When applied to 50% green turf (mid-transition), endothall unacceptably injured warm-season turf regardless of application rate. Endothall controlled annual bluegrass more effectively when applied during mid-transition and 100% green turf than it did when applied during fully dormant turf. When applied at rates of 1.68 and 2.24 kg ai ha−1 during mid-transition or at 100% green turf, endothall controlled annual bluegrass 83% to 95%. Results from these studies indicate that endothall selectively controls herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass in warm-season turf but that selectivity and performance depend on application timing.

Pollinators risk exposure to insecticide residue when visiting weedy flowers in urban landscapes. Previous research shows that pollinators are routinely exposed to a variety of pesticides, but herbicides have exhibited minimal toxicity and did not contribute to the modeled risk quotients. Herbicides from different modes of action may deter pollinators from visiting turfgrass weeds, but their temporal influence on floral quality and pollinator foraging is unaddressed. Research experiments were conducted at Blacksburg, VA, in 2023 to assess the effect of four herbicides on floral morphology and ultraviolet (UV) reflectance of three different UV floral classes of weeds and associated pollinator foraging visits. Among 1,080 assessments per weed species, honeybees (Apis mellifera), bumble bees (Bombus spp.), solitary bees (Chelostoma florisomne), and flies (Diptera spp.) accounted for 94%, 2%, 3%, and 1%, respectively, of the total pollinator visitations on white clover (Trifolium repens L.) inflorescences; 71%, 2%, 0%, and 27%, respectively, on dandelion (Taraxacum officinale F.H. Wigg.) flowers; and 0%, 0%, 78%, and 22%, respectively, on bulbous buttercup (Ranunculus bulbosus L.) flowers. Pollinator visitation and floral quality were temporarily affected by herbicide application, with some herbicides eliminating food resources, while others transiently impacted floral quality and density. The combination of 2,4-D + dicamba + MCPP and topramezone eliminated pollinator foraging visits, but on differing temporal scales of 3 d for auxins and 14 d for topramezone. Halosulfuron and sulfentrazone transiently suppressed floral quality and density, with varying degrees of deterrence on pollinators depending on the weed species. All evaluated herbicides reduced radiometric UV reflectance of T. officinale petal apices, but only synthetic auxin and topramezone reduced digitally assessed floral UV-reflecting area. Petal UV reflectance appears to contribute but not solely influence pollinator foraging behavior. UV-absorbing and UV-reflecting flowers differed in UV-reflectance response to herbicides, but pollinators were similarly deterred. Results suggest that herbicides may offer a variety of management solutions to pollinator deterrence in areas slated for insecticide treatment, including long-term or transient deterrence with potential food-resource preservation.

Agricultural spray drone (ASD) use in managed turfgrass has been given limited attention in the scientific literature. Further, deposition patterns of ASD spray have been obscured in previous research by ambient wind, crop canopy interference, and limited sampling resolution. Using a continuous sampling method involving blue colorant and water sprayed over white Kraft paper that was assessed via digital image analysis of stain objects and referenced spectrophotometric analysis of extractant, deposition metrics were estimated across a 29.3-m transect perpendicular to an ASD or ground-sprayer spray swath. The ASD applies very fine droplets that are highly concentrated with herbicide, similar to ultra–low volume treatments, that improved smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Schreb. ex Muhl.] control compared with a ground sprayer when the ASD was operated 2 m above the turf. Unfortunately, these very fine droplets also drift, leading to four times greater droplet density at distance of almost 12 m away from the targeted spray swath following an operational height of 10 m compared with 2 m. As ASD operational height increases, drift and effective swath width at 30% coefficient of variation uniformity increases, while effective application rate, total deposition, and D. ischaemum control by quinclorac herbicide decreased. Total deposition decreased 6% for each meter increase in ASD operational height, likely due to evaporation. The potential losses due to evaporation are a serious consideration for ASD use that has received little attention in the scientific literature. Our data suggest that ASD operational height should be as low as possible, but modification of spray systems may be needed to improve homogeneity of spray pattern.

Effective pesticide application is dependent on precise and sufficient delivery of active ingredients to targeted pests. Water-sensitive papers (WSPs) have been used to estimate the stain coverage, droplet density, droplet size, total spray volume, and other spray-quality metrics by analyzing deposit stains using image analysis software. However, because WSPs are expensive, they are typically distributed along unidimensional transects at intervals of 0.5 m or more, which comprises 0.5% or less of the total treated area. This might limit the ability to accurately represent the deposition of agricultural sprayers with irregular patterns, such as agricultural drone sprayers in the early developmental stage. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing white Kraft paper and a blue colorant proxy for assessing spray deposition. A custom Python-based image analysis tool, SprayDAT (Spray Droplet Analysis Tool), was developed and compared with traditional image analysis software, DepositScan. Both models showed increased accuracy in detecting larger objects, with SprayDAT generally performing better for smaller droplets. DepositScan underestimated the total deposited spray volume by up to 2.7 times less compared with the colorant extraction assessed via spectrophotometry and the predicted output based on flow rate, coverage, and speed. Accuracy of software-estimated spray volume declined with increasing total stain coverage, likely due to overlapping stain objects. Droplet density exhibited a Gaussian trend, with peak density at approximately 22% stain cover, offering evidence for overlapped stains for both DepositScan and SprayDAT as stain cover increased. Both models showed exponential growth in volumetric median diameter (VMD) with increasing stain cover. SprayDAT is freely accessible through an online repository. It features a user-friendly interface for batch processing large sets of scanned images and offers versatility for customization to meet individual needs, such as adjusting spread factor, updating the standard curve for spray volume estimation, or modifying the stain detection threshold.

Deertongue is a perennial, warm-season grass, and is problematic in naturalized areas of golf courses due to limited control options. Research was conducted to evaluate several herbicides for deertongue control in naturalized areas consisting primarily of fine fescue. Greenhouse studies assessed 24 herbicide admixtures and indicated that fluazifop, glyphosate, imazapic, and thiencarbazone + iodosulfuron + dicamba (TID) reduced deertongue biomass by >80% at 10 wk after initial treatment (WAIT). Subsequent field trials were conducted on golf course naturalized areas. The first site was on a woodland edge and was partially shaded for 6 h each day, and the second trial site was 50 m away from the woodland edge and not subjected to more than 1 h of daily shade. At 9 WAIT, fluazifop at 420 g ai ha−1 applied once or three times at 3-wk intervals and topramezone at 37 g ai ha−1 applied thrice at 3-wk intervals injured fine fescue by ≤10% at both sites. Glyphosate applied at 1,120 g ae ha−1, imazapic at 105 g ai ha−1, and imazapic at 53 g ai ha−1 tank-mixed with glyphosate at 560 g ae ha−1 injured fine fescue by ≥50% under shaded conditions, whereas glyphosate alone did not injure fine fescue under sunny conditions. Fine fescue was completely recovered by 52 WAIT from injury following herbicide treatments, except for glyphosate-containing treatments at the shaded site and glyphosate + imazapic at both sites. At 52 WAIT, glyphosate-containing treatments and sequential applications of fluazifop controlled deertongue by ≥93% and reduced shoot density to ≤5 shoots m−2 averaged over both sites. Fluazifop at 420 g ha−1 applied thrice at 3-wk intervals selectively controls deertongue with excellent safety to fine fescue. Glyphosate also controls deertongue, but unacceptably injures fine fescue when managed under shaded conditions. Future research will assess how different light intensities influence fine fescue epicuticular wax deposits and associated response to glyphosate.

Postemergence (POST) herbicides that control troublesome weeds during hybrid bermudagrass establishment via sprigs are limited due to potential turfgrass phytotoxicity and herbicide-resistant weeds. Research experiments were conducted in Blacksburg, VA, and Hope, AR, in 2016 and 2023 to evaluate herbicide programs to control goosegrass and smooth crabgrass and the response of hybrid bermudagrass sprigs to POST herbicides applied 3 to 5 wk after establishment (WAE). Another study was conducted to assess the tolerance of ‘Latitude 36’, ‘Tahoma 31’, and ‘TifTuf’ hybrid bermudagrass sprigs to POST herbicides applied 4 to 5 WAE. Thiencarbazone + foramsulfuron + halosulfuron did not injure hybrid bermudagrass > 6% across four cultivars and a total of 10 site-yr but reduced goosegrass and smooth crabgrass cover equivalent to the best-performing treatments. Topramezone + metribuzin injured turfgrass > 25% at 14 d after treatment (DAT), but tank mixing with thiencarbazone + foramsulfuron + halosulfuron reduced injury by 5% to 22%. Quinclorac injured hybrid bermudagrass 17% to 58%, depending on site, which was more than most other treatments. Mesotrione-, quinclorac-, or topramezone-based programs injured hybrid bermudagrass and also reduced turfgrass cover, the dark green color index, and the normalized difference vegetation index, but turfgrass recovered by 28 DAT. Results suggest that turfgrass managers have a variety of herbicides that can control smooth crabgrass and goosegrass during hybrid bermudagrass sprig establishment, but the margin of selectivity is relatively low for mesotrione, quinclorac, and topramezone and may be dependent on herbicide rate or hybrid bermudagrass cultivar.

Goosegrass and smooth crabgrass in creeping bentgrass turf are difficult to control due to a lack of selective herbicides. Based on preliminary field observations, we hypothesized that paclobutrazol and flurprimidol would reduce the overall competitiveness of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass in creeping bentgrass. Greenhouse and field studies were designed to evaluate the effect of several plant growth regulators (PGRs) on goosegrass and smooth crabgrass competitive indices. In greenhouse studies, flurprimidol, paclobutrazol, trinexapac-ethyl, and prohexadione-calcium were applied either preemergence only or preemergence plus two biweekly postemergence applications to goosegrass and smooth crabgrass plants to simulate the first 1.5 mo of typical PGR programs used on golf courses. Two weeks after the final postemergence treatment, aboveground biomass and root biomass were recorded. Programmatic flurprimidol and paclobutrazol applications reduced smooth crabgrass aboveground biomass by 67% and 69%, respectively, and more than trinexapac ethyl or prohexadione-calcium. When averaged across application programs, flurprimidol and paclobutrazol reduced smooth crabgrass root biomass by 74% and goosegrass biomass by 73% to 80%. Field studies were established to further evaluate the influence of PGRs on smooth crabgrass coverage in creeping bentgrass turf. Treatments consisting of flurprimidol, trinexapac-ethyl, flurprimidol plus trinexapac-ethyl, paclobutrazol, and fenoxaprop-p were applied every 3 wk from April to August. Weed coverage data were collected throughout the growing season, and final smooth crabgrass control data were collected at the end of the season. In general, flurprimidol-containing treatments more effectively reduced smooth crabgrass coverage throughout the growing season than trinexapac ethyl. After the studies, regimens that contained flurprimidol controlled smooth crabgrass by 68% to 73%, greater than any other PGR program evaluated. Results from these studies indicate that flurprimidol may be used to effectively control smooth crabgrass or goosegrass in creeping bentgrass turf. These are the first reported data regarding the use of flurprimidol for smooth crabgrass or goosegrass control in turf.

Methiozolin is applied five or more times per year to control annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) in cool, temperate areas, but high market demand in the southern United States and recent registration in Australia has expanded the product’s use in variable climates. To better design weed control programs for variable turf types, more information is needed to characterize methiozolin dissipation in different turf systems. Methiozolin was applied biweekly three times to a Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) lawn and adjacent bare soil in New Jersey and on 12 hybrid bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt Davy] putting greens in Virginia. Soil samples were collected immediately following each application and biweekly for 12 additional weeks. Methiozolin was extracted from each soil sample and analyzed using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Methiozolin was detected only within the top 2 cm of the soil (including verdure), but not below 2 cm, demonstrating its limited vertical mobility. Dissipation was significantly faster in turf-covered soil compared with bare soil. The time required for 50% methiozolin dissipation was 13 and 3.5 d in bare soil and turf-covered soil, respectively. In Virginia, methiozolin dissipation in the 1-m span of three sequential applications differed between years. Methiozolin concentration immediately following the third biweekly application to C. dactylon ×transvaalensis greens was approximately 105% and 180% of the concentration immediately following the initial application, in 2021 and 2022, respectively. This difference in methiozolin accumulation following three applications was attributed to differential C. dactylon ×transvaalensis green up during methiozolin treatments each year. Despite differences in posttreatment methiozolin concentration between years, the temporal dissipation rate later into the summer was consistent. Following the final application on C. dactylon ×transvaalensis greens, methiozolin dissipated 50% and 90% in 14 and 46 d, respectively. These data suggest that methiozolin dissipates more rapidly in turfgrass systems than in bare soil.

Methiozolin is labeled for goosegrass and smooth crabgrass control in golf course putting greens, but no peer-reviewed literature exists regarding this use. Greenhouse experiments were conducted evaluating goosegrass and smooth crabgrass response to increasing rates of methiozolin as affected by weed growth stage. In general, as weed growth stage increased, the methiozolin rate required to reduce weed biomass 90% (WR90) increased. Goosegrass was more sensitive to preemergence-applied methiozolin than smooth crabgrass, and the WR90 was 30.4 and 118 g ai ha–1 for goosegrass and smooth crabgrass, respectively. However, smooth crabgrass was generally more sensitive to postemergence-applied methiozolin than goosegrass. Subsequent field studies were conducted to evaluate goosegrass and smooth crabgrass control with methiozolin applied singularly or sequentially at standard preemergence timings. Results indicated methiozolin applied singularly or sequentially at the label-recommended rate (500 g ha–1) is not persistent enough to provide season-long control of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass. Ten field studies were conducted in Alabama, California, Florida, and Virginia to evaluate frequent methiozolin application programs with the objective of providing selective, season-long goosegrass and smooth crabgrass control. Results from these studies indicate methiozolin can be safely applied to hybrid bermudagrass and creeping bentgrass putting greens despite exceeding the yearly maximum use rate for putting greens (2,500 g ha–1) with some treatments. Methiozolin effectively controlled smooth crabgrass throughout the growing season in California and Virginia when 10 biweekly applications were applied at 250 g ha–1 or higher. In Florida, methiozolin did not acceptably (80%) control goosegrass regardless of application rate. In Virginia, methiozolin acceptably controlled goosegrass only when applied at rates and frequencies that exceeded the maximum yearly methiozolin usage rate. These data indicate that methiozolin has the potential to control smooth crabgrass preemergence when applied frequently, but does not provide acceptable goosegrass control at labeled rates.

Turfgrass managers are concerned about zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) injury from nonselective herbicide treatment during winter dormancy. Research was conducted to assess factors affecting spray penetration into semidormant ‘Meyer’ zoysiagrass canopies and to evaluate absorption and translocation of [14C]glyphosate and [14C]glufosinate into green leaves and subtending stolons. Absorption of [14C]glyphosate and [14C]glufosinate was up to four times greater in stolons than in leaves. Zoysiagrass leaves treated with [14C]glufosinate had more rapid 14C absorption than those treated with [14C]glyphosate. More 14C translocated out of the treated area following [14C]glyphosate treatment compared with [14C]glufosinate and moved more readily from stolon to leaves than from leaves to stolon. When extended-range, flat-fan spray tips (XR) were positioned 61 cm above zoysiagrass, 73% and 11% of recovered colorant was extracted from dormant vegetation in the upper and lower canopy levels. Turbo TeeJet® spray tips (TTI) deposited fewer droplets into the upper canopy and more droplets into the middle and lower canopy regardless of position above the turf surface. Increasing pressure from 103 to 414 kPa increased droplet velocities from XR and TTI nozzles and decreased droplet diameters of XR nozzles. Droplet diameters were also substantially increased when using TTI nozzles compared with XR nozzles. Droplet diameter and associated mass were more determinant of turfgrass canopy penetration than droplet velocity. At 60 L ha−1 of carrier volume, 23% of colorant reached the lower canopy level, and this quantity increased by 2.3% per additional 100 L ha−1. When carrier volume was reduced from 584 to 60 L ha−1, 48% less colorant was delivered to the lower canopy level. Given that subcanopy stolons are always present and absorb more glyphosate and glufosinate than leaves, practices such as avoiding induction-type nozzles, raising spray height, and reducing spray volume can reduce herbicide delivery and potential injury to semidormant zoysiagrass.

Herbicide resistance coupled with a dearth of selective herbicide options has increased the complexity of annual bluegrass control in hybrid bermudagrass putting greens. Cumyluron, endothall, and methiozolin are herbicides that control annual bluegrass by inhibiting novel sites of action compared with the herbicides currently used for turfgrass management in the United States. However, peer-reviewed literature contains no information on hybrid bermudagrass putting green tolerance to these herbicides. Sixteen field studies were established on eight golf greens in Midlothian, VA, in 2021 and 2022 to evaluate effects of cumyluron, endothall, methiozolin, pronamide, and trifloxysulfuron on bermudagrass spring transition. The 16 studies were split equally between initiation during full dormancy versus mid-spring transition. Methiozolin applied at 500 and 1,000 g ai ha−1 typically increased the heat units (growing degree days with a base temperature of 15 C) required for hybrid bermudagrass to visibly achieve 90% green coverage (T90) when applied to fully dormant hybrid bermudagrass. This delay in green coverage was more pronounced at sites where hybrid bermudagrass vigor was seemingly reduced via abiotic stressors. Endothall was generally more injurious than all other treatments when applied to hybrid bermudagrass during mid-transition. Endothall applied at 840 g ai ha−1 injured hybrid bermudagrass for 0 to 9 d over a threshold of 30% (DOT30), depending on location. In two site-years characterized by increased abiotic stress, methiozolin applied at 1,000 g ai ha−1 caused 44 DOT30. Cumyluron never injured hybrid bermudagrass by more than 30% or delayed T90 regardless of application timing. These results indicate that methiozolin should be applied only within labeled rates to actively growing hybrid bermudagrass putting greens, cumyluron can be safely applied at 6,450 g ai ha−1 to dormant or actively growing bermudagrass greens, and endothall applications should be limited to dormant bermudagrass greens unless transient phytotoxicity is acceptable.

Few herbicides are registered for goosegrass control in creeping bentgrass turfgrass. Topramezone controls goosegrass and is labeled for use on creeping bentgrass, but potential injury risks lead many turf managers to frequently apply it at a low-dose. This application practice increases the likelihood that topramezone treatments will be mixed with fungicide treatments. Previous research found that fungicides can reduce the activity of some herbicides, but their effects on topramezone efficacy are unknown. Four studies were established between Blacksburg, VA, and North Brunswick, NJ, in 2021 to determine whether chlorothalonil reduces goosegrass control from topramezone. In controlled environment dose-response studies the amount of topramezone needed to reduce goosegrass biomass by 50% increased from 3.04 g ha−1 to 5.27 g ha−1 when chlorothalonil (7,400 g ha−1) was added to the mixture. In field experiments, topramezone at 3.7 and 6.1 g ha−1 controlled goosegrass by 50% and 63%, respectively, at 42 d after treatment when averaged across herbicide admixtures. The addition of chlorothalonil alone and chlorothalonil plus acibenzolar-S-methyl to topramezone reduced goosegrass control from 73% to 52% and 45%, respectively, when averaged across topramezone rate. From these studies we can conclude that chlorothalonil has the potential to reduce goosegrass control when topramezone is applied at the maximum allowable rate (6 g ae ha−1) or less. This is the first report of fungicides acting to reduce herbicidal weed control efficacy in turfgrass systems.

Data from a national survey of 348 U.S. sports field managers were used to examine the effects of participation in Cooperative Extension events on the adoption of turfgrass weed management practices. Of the respondents, 94% had attended at least one event in the previous 3 yr. Of this 94%, 97% reported adopting at least one practice as a result of knowledge gained at an Extension turfgrass event. Half of the respondents had adopted four or more practices; a third adopted five or more practices. Nonchemical, cultural practices were the most-adopted practices (65% of respondents). Multiple regression analysis was used to examine factors explaining practice adoption and Extension event attendance. Compared to attending one event, attending three events increased total adoption by an average of one practice. Attending four or more events increased total adoption by two practices. Attending four or more events (compared to one event) increased the odds of adopting six individual practices by 3- to 6-fold, depending on the practice. This suggests that practice adoption could be enhanced by encouraging repeat attendance among past Extension event attendees. Manager experience was a statistically significant predictor of the number of Extension events attended but a poor direct predictor of practice adoption. Experience does not appear to increase adoption directly, but indirectly, via its impact on Extension event attendance. In addition to questions about weed management generally, the survey asked questions specifically about annual bluegrass management. Respondents were asked to rank seven sources of information for their helpfulness in managing annual bluegrass. There was no single dominant information source, but Extension was ranked more than any other source as the most helpful (by 22% of the respondents) and was ranked among the top three by 53%, closely behind field representative/local distributor sources at 54%.

Turfgrass managers apply nonselective herbicides to control winter annual weeds during dormancy of warm-season turfgrass. Zoysiagrass subcanopies, however, retain green leaves and stems during winter dormancy, especially in warmer climates. The partially green zoysiagrass often deters the use of nonselective herbicides due to variable injury concerns in transition and southern climatic zones. This study evaluated zoysiagrass response to glyphosate and glufosinate applied at four different growing degree day (GDD)-based application timings during postdormancy transition in different locations, including Blacksburg, VA; Starkville, MS; and Virginia Beach, VA, in 2018 and 2019. GDD was calculated using a 5 C base temperature with accumulation beginning January 1 each year, and targeted application timings were 125, 200, 275, and 350 GDD5C. Zoysiagrass injury response to glyphosate and glufosinate was consistent across a broad growing region from northern Mississippi to coastal Virginia, but it varied by application timing. Glyphosate application at 125 and 200 GDD5C can be used safely for weed control during the postdormancy period of zoysiagrass, while glufosinate caused unacceptable turf injury regardless of application timing. Glyphosate and glufosinate exhibited a stepwise increase to maximum injury with increasing targeted GDD5C application timings. Glyphosate applied at 125 or 200 GDD5C did not injure zoysiagrass above a threshold of 30%, whereas glufosinate caused greater than 30% injury for 28 and 29 d when applied at 125 and 200 GDD5C, respectively. Likewise, glyphosate application at 125 or 200 GDD5C did not affect the zoysiagrass green cover area under the progress curve per day, whereas later applications reduced it. Glyphosate and glufosinate caused greater injury to zoysiagrass when applied at greater cumulative heat units and this was attributed to increasing turfgrass green leaf density, because heat unit accumulation is positively correlated with green leaf density. Accumulated heat unit-based application timing will allow practitioners to apply nonselective herbicides with reduced injury concerns.

Winter annual weeds begin to germinate as zoysiagrass enters winter dormancy in autumn. These weeds can suppress zoysiagrass shoot development the following spring through competition for sunlight, moisture, and nutrients. Previous research involving winter annual weed control in dormant turfgrass has been conducted primarily on bermudagrass, but less is known about how various herbicides used for this purpose will influence zoysiagrass after dormancy transition. Two field studies were conducted over 7 site-years between 2016 and 2020 to evaluate 17 herbicide treatments that are typically marketed for broadleaf weed control in spring and 18 herbicide treatments that are typically marketed for annual bluegrass control during winter for their effects on a variety of weeds and semidormant ‘Meyer’ and dormant ‘Zeon’ zoysiagrass, respectively. Glufosinate, glyphosate + simazine, and indaziflam + simazine controlled Persian speedwell by more than 90% and control was significantly greater with auxin-type and other herbicide combinations. Dandelion and Persian speedwell were better controlled with a combination of simazine and glyphosate than when glyphosate was applied alone. Glufosinate controlled dandelion, hairy bittercress, and Persian speedwell more effectively than glyphosate. In Meyer zoysiagrass, glyphosate and glufosinate controlled annual bluegrass equivalently, whereas in Zeon zoysiagrass, glyphosate controlled annual bluegrass better than glufosinate did. Foramsulfuron or treatments that contained simazine resulted in >90% control of annual bluegrass. A flumioxazin admixture with diquat, glufosinate, or glyphosate improved annual bluegrass control. Herbicide treatments that contain diquat, glufosinate, glyphosate, and metsulfuron alone or in a tank-mix should not be applied to Meyer zoysiagrass with 5% visual green turf cover due to high injury potential. In both studies, glufosinate was more injurious to Meyer and Zeon zoysiagrass than glyphosate. Overall, several herbicides that control annual bluegrass or broadleaf weeds can be safely applied to Zeon zoysiagrass during dormancy or Meyer zoysiagrass during post-dormancy transition.

The recent decline in pollinator abundance is a cause of concern for sustaining global food production. Several common weeds of managed turfgrass systems attract honeybees and other wild pollinators. As turfgrass often requires treatment with insecticides that harm bees, best practices are needed to prevent bees from visiting weed-infested turf areas that will be treated for insect pests. Weed control tactics can protect pollinator exposure to insecticides by reducing the floral resources afforded to bees from turfgrass weeds. Three field studies were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to evaluate the effect of various herbicides and herbicide formulation constituents on pollinator foraging and white clover floral morphology in managed tall fescue turfgrass. Treatments included a nontreated control; MCPP; 2,4-D; dicamba; Trimec Classic™ (2,4-D, MCPP, dicamba); Speedzone™ (carfentrazone, 2,4-D, MCPP, dicamba); and an herbicide-formulation constituent (inert ingredients of Speedzone™). All response variables were evaluated for 8 d, starting from one day before treatment and ending 6 d after treatment (DAT). The herbicide formulation constituent did not alter white clover flower density, floral discoloration, floral quality, or insect visitation compared to nontreated plots. Herbicides reduced flower density and floral quality to the same extent, but MCPP discolored white clover floral tissue 16% per day and less than all other herbicides except dicamba. Floral quality completely declined in approximately 5 d following any herbicide treatment. Bee visitation to white clover–infested turf increased by 3 bees min–1 for every 100 white clover blooms m–2. Honeybees and other insects vacated herbicide-treated areas in less than 2 d, despite minimal effects on floral quality and density at that time. The data suggest that practitioners could apply insecticides 2 d after auxin herbicide treatment and avoid harm to pollinators, but additional work is needed to directly measure pollinator exposure following such treatments.

In the transition zone, turfgrass managers generally utilize the dormancy period of warm-season turfgrass to apply herbicides for managing winter annual weeds. Although this weed control strategy is common in bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.], it has been less adopted in zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) due to variable turfgrass injury during post-dormancy transition. Previous research reported that air temperature could affect weed control and crop safety from herbicides. Growth-chamber studies were conducted to evaluate zoysiagrass response to glyphosate and glufosinate as influenced by three different temperature regimes during and after treatment. A field research study was conducted at four site-years to assess the influence of variable heat-unit accumulation on zoysiagrass response to seven herbicides. In the growth-chamber study, glufosinate injured zoysiagrass more than glyphosate and reduced time to reach 50% green cover reduction, regardless of the rate, when incubated for 7 d under different temperature levels. When green zoysiagrass sprigs were incubated for 7 d at 10 C, the rate of green cover reduction was slowed for both herbicides; however, green cover was rapidly reduced under 27 C. After treated zoysiagrass plugs having 5% green cover were incubated at 10 C for 14 d, glyphosate-treated plugs reached 50% green cover in 22 d, similar to nontreated plugs but less than the 70 d required for glufosinate-treated plugs. Zoysiagrass response to glyphosate was temperature dependent, but glufosinate injured zoysiagrass unacceptably regardless of temperature regime. Diquat, flumioxazin, glufosinate, and metsulfuron + rimsulfuron injured zoysiagrass at 200 or 300 growing-degree days at base 5 C (GDD5C) application timings, but foramsulfuron and oxadiazon did not injure zoysiagrass regardless of GDD5C. The relationship of leaf density to green turf cover is dependent on zoysiagrass mowing height, and both metrics are reduced by injurious herbicides. Research indicates that glufosinate injures zoysiagrass more than glyphosate, and the speed and magnitude of herbicide injury generally increase with temperature.

Methiozolin is commonly used for the safe and selective removal of annual bluegrass from creeping bentgrass golf greens. Studies were conducted in 2013 and 2014 with the objective of assessing fertility programs consisting of synthetic fertilizers and biostimulants, with and without the plant growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl, to aid putting green canopy recovery following annual bluegrass removal via methiozolin. Additional studies were conducted to compare recovery of creeping bentgrass following an aggressive core aerification event with fertility programs with and without methiozolin. In all cases, the addition of 7 kg ha−1 of N-P-K from fertilizer or biostimulant biweekly to greens increased turfgrass recovery time by 1 to 3 wk compared to a standard green’s fertility program alone. Creeping bentgrass treated with biostimulants recovered equivalent to or quicker than creeping bentgrass treated with synthetic fertilizer (SF) in all cases. In the presence of methiozolin treatments, trinexapac-ethyl reduced time to 90% recovery (T90) by 0.25 to 0.5 wk at two locations, and increased T90 recovery time by 0.1 wk at one location. Otherwise, plots treated with SF plus trinexapac-ethyl were equivalent to plots treated with SF only. Methiozolin slowed turfgrass recovery time at one location where severe drought stress occurred but not at the other location that did not experience drought stress. These results suggest that turf managers should increase fertilizer treatments but will not need to discontinue trinexapac-ethyl use to maximize creeping bentgrass recovery following annual bluegrass control with methiozolin. These data also suggest that methiozolin has the potential to negatively affect creeping bentgrass recovery when drought stress is experienced.

Immediate posttreatment irrigation has been proposed as a method to reduce hybrid bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt Davy] phytotoxicity from topramezone. Immediate irrigation is impractical, because it would take a turfgrass sprayer 10 to 15 min to cover an average golf course fairway or athletic field. There is also insufficient evidence regarding how posttreatment irrigation, immediate or otherwise, influences mature goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.] control from topramezone or low-dose topramezone plus metribuzin programs. We sought to investigate bermudagrass and E. indica response to immediate, 15-min, and 30-min posttreatment irrigation compared with no irrigation following topramezone at 12.3 g ae ha−1, the lowest labeled rate, or topramezone at 6.1 g ha−1 plus metribuzin at 210 g ai ha−1. We also evaluated placement of each herbicide and their combination on soil, foliage, and soil plus foliage to help elucidate the mechanisms involved in differential responses between species and herbicide mixtures. Responses were largely dependent on trial due to bermudagrass injury from high-dose topramezone being nearly eliminated by immediate irrigation in one trial and only slightly affected in another. When posttreatment irrigation was postponed for 15 or 30 min, topramezone alone injured bermudagrass unacceptably in both trials. Bermudagrass was injured less by low-dose topramezone plus metribuzin than by high-dose topramezone. All posttreatment irrigation timings reduced E. indica control compared with no posttreatment irrigation. The herbicide placement study suggested that topramezone control of E. indica is highly dependent on foliar uptake and that phytotoxicity of both bermudagrass and E. indica is greater from topramezone than metribuzin. Thus, posttreatment irrigation likely reduces topramezone rate load with a concomitant effect on plant phytotoxicity of both species. Metribuzin reduced 21-d cumulative clipping weight and tiller production of plants, and this may be a mechanism by which it reduces foliar white discoloration from topramezone.

Goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.] remains problematic for bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] turf managers due to the ineffective, selective control of mature plants with available postemergence herbicides and lack of sufficient residual activity from those herbicides to control seedling plants. Topramezone controls mature E. indica, but past efforts to suppress potential injury to bermudagrass turf have been inconsistent. We hypothesized that metribuzin at 210 g ai ha−1 in admixture with topramezone would improve bermudagrass tolerance while conserving mature E. indica control. In preliminary field studies, metribuzin mixed with topramezone at 1.2 or 2.5 g ae ha−1 applied twice at a 3-wk interval reduced bermudagrass injury and white discoloration compared with topramezone applied alone, but metribuzin did not safen bermudagrass to mesotrione. Topramezone at 3.7 g ha−1 plus 210 g ha−1 metribuzin applied twice at a 3-wk interval offered improved bermudagrass tolerance while it still controlled mature E. indica during 15 field and 2 greenhouse studies in Virginia. This program offered a 10-fold decrease in suprathreshold duration of white discoloration compared with topramezone alone at 6.1 g ha−1. Bermudagrass absorbed three times less radioactivity than E. indica at timings up to 48 h after treatment with [14C]topramezone. Bermudagrass also metabolized twice as much topramezone compared with E. indica at 48 h after treatment. Metribuzin reduced 14C absorption by approximately 25% in both species. These studies confirm the performance of a novel, low-dose topramezone plus metribuzin program for mature E. indica control in bermudagrass turf and suggest that selectivity between bermudagrass and E. indica to topramezone is due to differential absorption and metabolism. The fact that metribuzin reduces topramezone absorption in both species suggests that it may help reduce bermudagrass phytotoxic response to topramezone, but its role in altering selectivity between bermudagrass and E. indica may be due to other factors.
